Marion Palatin Appointed Vice President of WBO Europe | Boxen247.com

The World Boxing Organization appointed Marion Palatin as Vice President of WBO Europe yesterday. She will succeed former champion Istvan ‘Koko’ Kovacs, who held the position since 2004. Palatin will complete Kovacs’ term, which will be up for re-election in the next WBO Executive Committee general elections, slated for this year’s convention.

Member of the Austrian Boxing Commission and an experienced boxing commissioner and supervisor, Palatin currently is WBO Europe Female Boxing Coordinator.

“Marion is a first-rate boxing professional with the Austrian Boxing Commission. She speaks German and English fluently, has great relations with boxing figures across Europe and around the globe, and is ideally suited for her new position”, said WBO President Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcárcel, Esq. about Palatin.

A two-time Olympian (bronze in Barcelona 92, gold in Atlanta 96) and WBO 126 lbs. World Champion in 2001, Kovacs was an important part of the WBO for the last 20 years and a great ambassador for the sport. Earlier this month he was elected as the Secretary General of the AIBA (Association Internationale de Boxe Amateure / International Amateur Boxing Association) and will be working hard with the amateur ranks for the foreseeable future.

Kovacs’’ last official assignment as a WBO Executive Committee member will be supervising WBO 130 lbs. World Champion Jamel Herring’s defense against former world titlist Carl Frampton this Saturday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

“Koko is my close, personal friend and was instrumental in the growth of the WBO in Europe. I am sure that he will have much success in his new venture with the AIBA,” added Valcárcel.

The Australian is the number one contender for the WBO Jr. Middleweight belt.

Tim Tszyu (18-0, 14 KOs) beat Dennis Hogan (28-4-1, 7 KOs) with a fifth-round stoppage on Wednesday in Australia.

The Australian dropped Hogan, and continued to land heavy blows until Hogan’s camp threw in the towel with seconds remaining of the round.

The 26-year-old retained his WBO Global title and moved onto a record of 18 wins and zero losses, and could soon find himself in contention for major title fights.

Tszyu defeated his Irish-born rival with constant shots to the body, and finally sent him to the canvas in the fifth before Hogan’s corner gave in.

Already ranked as the number one contender by the WBO, he may now attempt to gain a fight against title holder Brian Castano.

“I could see it from round two,” said the winner after the fight. “We knew we had another seven, eight rounds so we paced ourselves. It’s sink or swim and we swam.

“The caliber of my opponent, a two-time title challenger who I got out of there quicker than [Jermall] Charlo—not a bad achievement,” said Tszyu, who now wants to bring a belt back to Australia.

“We want the real straps,” claimed Tszyu. “And we want them here in Australia.”

Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney will defend his WBC World Lightweight title against Jorge Linares at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas Saturday, May 29. The event will air live worldwide on DAZN in association with Devin Haney Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.

Ticket information, including on-sale details and pricing, as well as the undercard will be released soon.

The spotlight will be on Haney (25-0, 18 KOs) over Memorial Day Weekend as he puts his belt on the line for the third time, this time taking on Linares who will provide the sternest test of the champion’s rich talents. The 22-year-old star will box in his Las Vegas backyard for just the third time in his career and first time since his sixth pro outing in May 2016.

‘The Dream’ was elevated to World champion after a destructive KO win over Zaur Abdullaev in New York in September 2019. He went on to defend his belt twice with comfortable distance wins over Alfredo Santiago in November 2019 and Yuriorkis Gamboa the following November.

“I’m very excited to be making my third World title defense against a great fighter like Jorge Linares, who will be the best fighter I will have ever faced in my career,” said Haney. “He’s a three-division World champion who has fought at the championship level for the past thirteen years.

“I grew up watching Linares and the fact that this fight is happening in Las Vegas is incredible. Boxing fans around the world are eager to see me step up in competition which is great, and I know Linares is coming to fight. I’m ready to give the fans a spectacular performance. The better competition brings the best out of me. Against Linares, I’m going to show the world why I’m the king of the Lightweight division.”

Linares (47-5, 29 KOs) is looking to become a two-time holder of the WBC strap that he won in December 2014 against Javier Prieto. The fight was a catalyst to a four-year run where the Venezuelan ace beat Kevin Mitchell, Ivan Cano, Anthony Crolla twice, Luke Campbell and Mercito Gesta as Lightweight king before he faced defeat in a to-and-fro clash with Vasiliy Lomachenko in New York in May 2018.

The 35-year-old takes on Haney in his 15th World title battle and 53rd bout in over 18 years as a pro. Linares believes there are plenty more chapters to be written in his storied career.

Linares said, “This is my moment to show the world that I still have a lot more to give at 135 pounds. Devin Haney is a talented and quick-handed young man, but when I was his age, I had already become a world champion by snatching the title away from a real World champion like Oscar Larios. And now you can imagine how much more experience I have now at an age where I feel stronger and better than ever.”

Taylor defeated Jonas in the quarterfinals of the 2012 London Olympics. The two warriors will now face off almost ten years later.

Natasha, for her part, came very close to winning her first world title last summer when she drew WBC super featherweight champion Terri Harper in a very good fight.

Abraham Kahlil B Mitra, who`s Chairman of the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) in the Philippines, is a major force in the development of boxing in general and strong supporter of Women`s Boxing.

Abraham who`s nicknamed “Baham” is a valued and hard working member of the World Boxing Council Board of Governors. During his time as Chairman of the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation, better known as the OPBF, he promoted and expanded its membership, helping to reactivate the participation of Tonga, Taiwan and Guam.

Abraham, who served as Congressman from 2001 until 2010, used the diverse and comprehensive experience gained as Governor of the Palawan Province, to help in the administration of boxing, with efficiency, attention to detail and significantly caring and kindness, which distinguishes him as a person.

Abraham has also helped facilitate grants from the Jose Sulaiman Boxers Fund, reinforced by GAB Boxing to some boxers who have fallen in hard times.

One of Abraham`s greatest and most fundamental achievements, was helping internationalize the WBC`s Women`s Convention. The first one was held in Playa Del Carmen and the second was in Tijuana, which is also in Mexico.

So, it was time for this important and significant event to be placed on to a global footing. In 2018, the WBC`s Asia Summit was being held in Manila in the Philippines, and Abraham took on the responsibility of combining it with the third WBC Women`s Convention, November 16-19^th Abraham and his Team achieved an astounding success, organizing this large and successful twin event, adding on one element to another, and it was achieved with panache and superb organizational ability leading to triumph.

Delegates from all around the World stayed in the magnificent Sofitel Philippine Plaza. They included Mia St John, Melisa St Vil, Alicia Ashley, Martha Salazar, Jelena Mrdjenovich, Fabiana Bytyqi, Franchon Crews-Duzurn, Kenia Enriquez, Raja Amasheh and Sulem Urbina and many other fighters from around the world . They were accompanied by the management structure team which defines and develops women`s boxing, namely:

Chair of the WBC`s Women`s Championship Committee Malte Muller Michaelis, Jill Diamond who`s WBC International Secretary and International Chairperson of WBC Cares and Christiane Manzur who`s WBC Cares Chairperson. The daily work sessions which were intense, urbane, tremendously good humoured and productive, were held in the Philippine International Convention Center.

The third WBC Women`s Convention in Manila proved to be an historic milestone. Decisions there have helped develop boxing, including the ongoing battle to improve pay for women boxers, who are dedicated, hard working and highly competitive, yet always showing exemplary sportswomanship. At the end of bouts and championship contests women boxers invariably embrace and congratulate each other on a fight well fought in genuine heartfelt fashion. A fabulous example to us all in the Sport of Boxing.

Abraham`s first love is his family. At work, his responsibilities span all major sports in the Philippines, but one of his great passions is developing boxing. This country is the pearl of boxing in Asia. It has produced great champions including:

Pancho Villa, Flash Elorde, Little Dado, Gerry Penaloso, Luisito Espinosa, Ben Villaflor, Malcolm Tunacao, Rolando Navarette and Manny Pacquiao are just some of its constellation of stars.

Abraham Mitra relentless work and passion for boxing and humanity was fundamental during the difficult times during the pandemic as he lead with example by implementing protocols with the support of The WBC to reopen gymnasiums and to allow boxer to keep activity during the most difficult times .

GAB has also instituted severe penalties to those trying to exploit boxers abroad and has implemented exemplary administrative protocols to protect the less fortunate.

GAB under the leadership of Abraham Mitra was recognized by The WBC as Boxing Commission of the year for the unprecedented implementation of free medical examinations to all boxers before licensing them, this honor was presented during The WBC annual convention in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2017.

Former world super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (41-0, 27 KOs) is on the hunt and his targets are undefeated Russians, Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, respectively, the reigning WBC/IBF and WBA Super light heavyweight World champions.

The 29-year-old Ramirez, who recently signed an exclusive promotional contract with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, is currently ranked No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, by the WBA and WBO.

Ramirez was unimpressed by Beterbiev’s recent fight and he wonders where Bivol has been the past 1 ½ years, because he hasn’t been in the ring.

In his first fight in 519 days (Oct. 12, 2019), Beterbiev showed signs of rust and possibly age (36) during his 10^th round technical knockout of his relatively unknown German opponent, Adam Deines (19-2-1, 10 KOs). Now, Beterbiev is talking about next fighting the winner of the April 10^th Joe Smith, Jr. (26-3, 21 KOs) versus Maxim Vlasov (45-3, 26 KOs) on April 10^th for the vacant WBO 175-pound division title. Vlasov, incidentally, was defeated by Ramirez via a 10-round unanimous decision in 2015.

“I expected a lot more from him (Beterbiev),” Ramirez talked about Beterbiev’s fight with Deines. “I thought he looked flat and dull for the majority of the fight. It’s nice of him to temporarily hold my belts, but he should know that I’m coming for all the hardware and will bring the titles back to my people in Mexico.”

Bivol hasn’t thrown a punch during a fight in 17 months, since winning a 12-round unanimous decision against Lenin Castillo. Instead of returning against a “name” fighter in defense of his WBA Super title, Bivol will be returning May 1^st in London against somebody named Craig “Spider” Richards 16-1-1, 9 KOs), the WBA No. 8-rated light heavyweight who has never fought outside the United Kingdom.

“I’ve always said Dmitry Bivol was the toughest challenge out there,” Ramirez added, “which is why I want to make this fight happen. I know he’s got a fight coming up and hopefully he stays undefeated so we can make the mega-fight this summer.”

Jamel Herring wants to continue the legacy of representing marines in the sport of boxing when he defends his WBO super-featherweight title against Carl Frampton in this weekend’s massive showdown. Watch the fight live on ESPN+

The D4G Promotions event takes place at Caesars Palace Dubai on Saturday, as Herring (22-2, 10 KOs) puts his belt on the line against Frampton (28-2, 16 KOs), in what is the biggest fight to ever take place in the region.

Herring enlisted in the Marines in 2003 and served two tours of duty in Iraq, and he has reflected on how that has helped set him up for this historic battle.

Herring said: “I want to be known as one of the best marines to represent in the sport of boxing, and to continue that tradition of marines in boxing.

“Being in this sport is a blessing, especially as this level, as I’ve been through a lot worse. I’ve dealt with two deployments, and I’ve lost family and friends.

“I always wanted to be part of something special, and I feel I have a lot more to prove. A win in this fight opens a lot of doors for me for future fights.

“I’ve always been a fan of Carl’s. He was named Fighter of the Year at one point, and he knows what it takes to win title fights. He wants to make history, and his legacy is already cemented.

“He didn’t need this fight, as win lose or draw he’ll go down as one of the best, but a win here for me solidifies me as a legitimate super-featherweight world champion.”

CARL FRAMPTON: I CAN’T WAIT TO MAKE HISTORY!

Carl Frampton has vowed that he will go down in the history books by defeating Jamel Herring to win the WBO super-featherweight title on this weekend’s #Legacy spectacular in Dubai.

The D4G Promotions event takes place at Caesars Palace Dubai on Saturday, as Frampton (28-2, 16 KOs) finally gets the chance to step into the ring with Herring (22-2, 10 KOs), in what is the biggest fight to ever take place in the region.

A victory for The Jackal would see him become a three-weight world champion, and the Belfast hero is determined to grab his chance.

Frampton said: “The fight is finally here. I am absolutely delighted that it is as it’s been a fight that has been talked about for well over a year.

“It’s a huge fight and gives me the chance to become the island of Ireland’s only ever three-weight world champion, and one of the only ever Brits to do it. I’ve done it the hard way too, as I have beaten champions to win all my world titles.

“I have a lot of respect for Jamel Herring, as a man and as a fighter, but I have full confidence in myself that I will beat this guy. You’re always confident in every fight, but I feel this is meant to be and meant to happen. I will not let him take it off me.

“I will do whatever it takes to get my hand raised at the end of the fight. Jamel will be well up for this, but I am too, and I cannot wait to make history.”

Popular Canadian boxer Marie-Eve Dicaire learned an invaluable albeit disappointing lesson in her decision-loss to now-undisputed world super welterweight champion Claressa Shields (11-0, 2 KOs) on the March 3^rd “SUPERWOMEN” pay-per-view event.

Dicaire (17-1) suffered her first loss as a professional and in boxing that often leads in one direction or the opposite: learning from the overall experience and improving as a boxer or continue fighting as just a former world champion chasing opportunity.

Two weeks after the Shields fight, Marie-Eve was right back in training, rather than wallowing in her first loss and feeling sorry for herself.

“Clearly,” Dicaire said, “I learned a lot. I went right back to the gym with a precise plan to take my boxing to another level. I’ve realized many things, some good and some bad, but it will definitely help become a more complete fighter.

“After two weeks off, I had more than enough. Also, during the last year we experimented with a new way to work. I go to the gym for intense training for a few weeks, then take a few days off to rest. This method has brought me to another level, so we decided to work this way for my upcoming camp, because I felt great in the ring. I’m an overachiever. I can’t rest when I know I lost. I needed to get the work done to enjoy true vacations. I know I will be in the ring again soon.”

Losses ultimately lead to changes but Dicaire’s goal of becoming undisputed world champion remains the same. What’s changing, though, is her style, at least to some degree, especially considering she has zero knockouts during her pro career.

“I was born ready, so the sooner, the better,” Dicaire spoke about winning another world title. “I want to become a unified, undisputed world champion and this is why I am already back to work. We’re working on improving some of my weaknesses that weren’t a priority before. I’ll be working on improving my power and inside fighting during this training camp.”

Dicaire also learned that her support system has grown, remarkably, even after the initial setback on her otherwise undefeated record.

“I thought I was going to deal with the loss alone with my family and close friends,” Dicaire concluded, “but it’s been the exact opposite. I have never experienced so much support from fans during my entire career. It is like everybody is aware I have everything it takes to become champion of the world again and they’re with me during this new journey.”

Hanna Gabriels will face Martha Lara Gaytán for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) Light Heavyweight world title. The bout will take place on April 17th at the Fiesta Casino in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Gabriels is one of the great champions of the pioneer organization and holds the super welterweight belt, in addition to having been welterweight champion in the past and having fought for the middleweight title against Claressa Shields.

For the Costa Rican it will be her first fight since 2019. Her inactivity was caused due to an arm injury and later to the pandemic, but she is now ready to return and prove that she is still one of the best fighters in the world today.

She will face Lara Gaytan, an experienced Mexican who has already fought for regional titles and is hungry for this golden opportunity for her. The Aguascalientes native is nicknamed “La Aguerrida Demoledor”, is 33 years old and has 20 professional fights under her belt.

Gabriels has a record of 20 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw, and 11 KOs, while Lara Gaytan has 11 wins, 9 losses, and 6 KOs in her career.

‘The Blonde Bomber’ fired up ahead of World Title clash

Ebanie Bridges says she will go down as a ‘folk hero’ in the UK if she beats Watford’s Shannon Courtenay when they clash for the vacant WBA Bantamweight World Title on Saturday April 10, live on Sky Sports in the UK and on DAZN in the U.S. and more than 200 countries and territories.

Bridges celebrated her return to the ring after more than a year out with a convincing points win over Carol Earl in Sydney earlier this month. The maths teacher from New South Wales won the judges’ favour and secured a unanimous decision victory to extend her unbeaten run to five fights, including two knockouts.

‘The Blonde Bomber’ meets ‘The Baby Face Assassin’ on the undercard of Conor Benn vs. Samuel Vargas, and in doing so becomes the first Australian female fighter to feature on a Matchroom show, and the 34-year-old is promising to mark the occasion by landing her first World Title.

“I’m definitely being underestimated but that’s great,” said Bridges. “I’m all about shock value. Everything that I do makes headlines, that’s just me. I’m naturally like that, it just happens. When I get in there and throw the first punch of the fight, people are going to sit there and they’re going to be shocked because they have no idea what I’m capable of. I’m not just a Barbie Boxercise fighter.

“I feel like if I beat Shannon Courtenay I’ll go down as a f***ing folk hero in the UK because everyone is DM’ing me asking me to knock her out. They’re all like, ‘hey I’m British and I just want you to shut her up and knock her out because she’s so arrogant’. It’s crazy how many messages I get. I feel like there’s so much pressure on me to f**k her up. Nobody seems to like her over there. If I win, I’m going to be a hero.

“I’m not getting ahead of myself though because I know Shannon is a great boxer. She’s not going to be easy. I’m not going in there thinking this is going to be a walkover. I don’t think that about anyone. Losing is not an option, I’ll find a way. Is she going to be handle what I’m brining? We’re both skilled, both of us have styles that are pleasing to the eye.

“If she doesn’t end up getting knocked out, then by the end of the fight her face is going to end up looking like a smashed crab on a rock. It’s going to be messed up. She won’t be looking the same when this is finished. She’s in for a shock if she thinks I’m only worried about looking good on the scales. When I win that belt, the world is my oyster. It will open up opportunities everywhere.”

Courtenay vs. Bridges is part of a big night of action on April 10, rising Welterweight star Conor Benn (17-0, 11 KOs) defends his WBA Continental Title against Samuel Vargas (31-6-2, 14 KOs) in the main event, Hartlepool’s Savannah Marshall (9-0, 7 KOs) makes the first defence of her WBO Middleweight World Title against European Champion Femke Hermans (11-3, 4 KOs), Glasgow Bantamweight Kash Farooq (14-1, 6 KOs) returns after his masterclass win over Angel Aviles and Takeley Super-Middleweight John ‘The Gentleman’ Hedges (1-0) looks to build on his pro debut win last October, with more fights to be added soon.

MTK Global and Miura are delighted to announce a huge event taking place in Monterrey, Mexico on Friday 16 April.

The co-promoted MTK Fight Night card will be broadcast live in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank, on ESPN Knockout for Mexico and Latin America, and worldwide on IFL TV, and sees some of the best stars from Mexico and beyond on display.

Miura is a highly-respected promotion based in Mexico, with several fighters from their stable, along with a number of MTK Global boxers, set to compete on the card.

In the main event, undefeated Neslan Machado (17-0, 8 KOs) returns, taking on Brandon Romero (11-1-1, 6 KOs) in a 10-round super-featherweight clash.

Former world champion Miguel Vazquez (42-10, 16 KOs) is back, facing Alberto Morales over eight rounds at super-lightweight, plus teenage sensation Jonathan Lopez (2-0, 2 KOs) goes up against Omar Santillan (5-1) in a six-round featherweight clash.

Promising youngsters Christopher Florez (4-0, 4 KOs) and Rafael Armenta (2-0-1, 1 KO) are in action too, rounding up the talented crop of MTK Global stars set to compete on the event.

Miura’s fighters on the card include Christian Uruzquieta (19-4-2, 7 KOs), who defends his WBC International Silver lightweight title against Miguel Beltran (34-8, 23 KOs).

Argentina’s Ronan Sanchez (5-0, 3 KOs) takes on Martin Eligio (7-2, 5 KOs) in an eight-round lightweight bout, Ricardo Salas (15-1, 11 KOs) squares off with Carlos Gorham (16-7-1, 10 KOs) over six rounds at welterweight, while Jimerr Espinosa (9-0, 8 KOs) and Roberto Acosta (15-1, 8 KOs) both return to the ring too.

Unbeaten super-welterweights will collide as Troy Williamson goes up against Kieran Smith in a final eliminator for the British title on April 30.

The fight takes place on a Queensberry Promotions event at the Copper Box Arena in London, on the undercard of the Moruti Mthalane vs. Sunny Edwards world title fight live on BT Sport, which also features the highly-anticipated return of Michael Conlan as he faces Ionut Baluta.

Williamson (15-0-1, 11 KOs) is back after a win over Harry Scarff back in August, while Smith (16-0, 7 KOs) returns after his victory over Vincenzo Bevilacqua in November 2019.

Williamson said: “It is a good fight and he is a good fighter. It is one I am taking very seriously and I can’t wait to get the ball rolling.

“It is a big fight, with a lot at stake being a final eliminator for the British, and there is a bit of beef behind it because I beat him as an amateur back in 2015. It was in the Tri-Nations semi-final and it was a close-ish fight so there is a bit of history there.

“I’ve not seen much of his pro career but I know he is ranked above me in the Boxrec ratings and I respect him as a fighter. I agree with him that he has been avoided but I also think I am myself. This will be just the start and where I will announce myself on the big stage.”

Smith said: “I am very excited to be back out in a big fight, and on a big show on BT Sport. The last 18 months has been frustrating for me as it has been for many, but I’m here now and ready to kick on.

“It’s a shame we can’t get fans in for this one but I’m used to fighting in empty halls as it’s what we all did as amateurs on national teams all over the world.

“With this being a final eliminator for the British title, the plan is to win this and then push on for that belt. The super-welterweight division is thriving at the moment and there are so many big domestic fights. It’s just one step at a time though, my full focus is on beating Troy.”

There were impressive stoppage victories for Mateo Tapia and Paul Fleming on Wednesday, as the pair each won their respective fights in style in Australia.

The two undefeated Australian stars were part of a huge event at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre in New South Wales, on the undercard of the WBO Global super-welterweight title fight between Tim Tszyu and Dennis Hogan.

Tapia (13-0, 8 KOs) was going up against Renold Quinlan (12-8, 8 KOs), and it was a dominant performance from the 22-year-old, as he stopped Quinlan in the fourth round to win the vacant WBA Oceania super-middleweight title.

It was equally as impressive a performance from Fleming (27-0-1, 18 KOs), earning a victory over Tyson Lantry (8-4, 3 KOs) after Lantry’s corner threw in the towel in the seventh round.

World Boxing Council supermiddleweight champion Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, takes on WBO champion, Billy Joe Saunders, on May 8 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Coach Eddy Reynoso, who has a long and successful career working with Canelo, commented: “The fight with Saunders will be really tough. He works his legs very well. He throws good combinations and has good defense. It will be an excellent fight.”

Canelo (55-1-2, 37 KOs) is making up for lost time, fighting for the third time in five months after dethroning Callum Smith in December and brushing aside Avni Yildirim in February.

Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs) in his most recent bout defeated compatriot Martin Murray last December.

Canelo commented: “He is a good boxer. He is a tough and left-handed fighter, but we will be ready for him. I am very motivated to get a great victory.”

Intrepid Mexican José Zepeda (33-2, 26 KOs, 2 NC) will defend his hard earned World Boxing Council Silver super lightweight title, against his compatriot Pedro Campa (32-1-1, 21 KOs), on May 22 in Las Vegas , on the same card that will lead José Ramírez and Josh Taylor.

Zepeda won a dramatic seesaw thriller, by knocking out Ivan Baranchyk in the fifth round on October 9 at the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.

That fight included eight knockdowns in total. Zepeda somehow survived two knockdowns in the first round and one knockdown each in the second and fifth rounds to resolutely defeat the brave Baranchyk towards the end of the fifth round.

Campa, 29, agreed late last year to fight Adrien Broner in a “Showtime Championship Boxing” main event on February 20 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. However, one of Campa’s team members contracted COVID-19 and he was forced to withdraw from that fight in early January.

Campa is 5-0-1 since he suffered his only professional loss, a seventh round TKO against compatriot Carlos Jiménez in October 2017 in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

ESPN will broadcast the card presented by Top Rank.

After months of being focused upon the gym, slimmed, conditioned and meticulously guided by coach Eddy Reynoso, Andy is ready to get back to winning ways, after his loss to Anthony Joshua in December 2019.

“I can’t wait to get back in the ring. Training with Eddy in his gym has been incredible. I am surrounded by great fighters, especially Canelo Álvarez and we are putting in the work, to be better than ever. I’ve known Chris Arreola since I turned pro. I will be smart and ready to put myself back in position to be world champion,” pledged Andy.

For his part, Arreola, who has not fought since 2019, commented: “We are doing everything possible so that when Ruiz and I meet, the fans enjoy an all-out war between the two best Mexican-American heavyweights. I plan to win,” stressed Nightmare Arreola.

Ryan Roach’s Fighter Locker has signed 2016 Olympic silver medalist Yuberjen Martinez to an exclusive managerial contract.

The 29-year-old Colombian light flyweight has a 7-0 (2 KOs) record in the World Series of Boxing.

“After having a beautiful amateur career,” Martinez announced, “we have decided to go pro and signed a managerial contract with Fighter Locker. I still plan to represent my country again at the Olympics this year in Tokyo. It is a pleasure for me to sign with Fighter Locker and Ryan Roach, who comes from a boxing family of tradition. I am sure that this new career change will be successful.

“I want to thank all those who have supported me as an amateur boxer and member of Team Colombia. I have learned a lot and put the name of country, Colombia, at the top through discipline. I will continue to count on their continued support throughout my professional career.”

Martinez lost in the championship final of the 2016 Olympics on points to Hassanboy Dusmatov, of Uzbekistan, in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

In addition to winning a silver medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, Martinez was a bronze medalist at the 2017 World Amateur Championships in Hamburg Germany. His other amateur boxing highlights include a gold medal at the 2018 South American Games, silver at the 2019 Pan American Games in Brazil, and gold and silver, respectively, at the 2018 and 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games.

“I have signed a good number of top amateurs in their respective divisions, but none as decorated as Yuberjen,” Martinez’ new manager Ryan Roach said. “This is a unique opportunity as he heads back to the Olympics and is favored to medal once again. He truly is a special fighter: fast, strong, and relentless. Once he finishes the Olympics, we will get right to work and focus on the professional ranks. I think it speaks volumes of my company and my reputation to sign such an outstanding fighter who could have previously signed with other managers.
