“I feel stronger at 175, and it feels like my natural weight. You have seen me in three fights already and see how I have performed. I know Gonzalez will be prepared, he is ready to give it his all, so I am I. I want to put on a good show for fight fans on December 18.

“This is an excellent fight for Texas. What better way to end the year in a great battle? Gonzalez is a fighter that comes forward, and so am I. I know there are a lot of Mexican boxing fans in San Antonio; I have fought there before and am thankful to come back to Texas. I know December 18 will be spectacular for all fight fans.

“Gonzalez was a plan for us after Bivol did not want to sign the fight contract. He is scared to fight me that he went to Russia to fight. “I was signed with a promotional company and the reasons for why they stopped me from fighting I never understood. I was always in shape. I was always ready for the next fighting opportunity but it never came and they never gave me a response. So I had to look for new opportunities, but I never lost faith that I could come back. Fortunately, I found a new team and have all the motivation to continue with my boxing career and I want to give it my all.

“It’s not a secret that Zurdo is a great fighter, he is in a good position. I am here with hunger and the desire to win. We are closer than ever to get to a new level of my career and I know that the hunger and desire I feel to win are what is going to be the determining factor in this fight.

“Maybe yes, I have been out of the ring for a long time, but I feel good. I have always maintained myself, mostly because of the possibility of landing a fight, but also because it keeps me in good health. When I got this opportunity getting back into fight shape wasn’t so hard. I feel like there is a lot of muscle memory, so getting back into it was easier than I thought I would be, and I am ready to get back into the ring.

Israil Madrimov can take a step closer to achieving his World Title dream when he faces Michel Soro in a Final Eliminator for the WBA Super-Welterweight crown on another huge night for Uzbekistan boxing at the Renaissance Hall in Tashkent on Friday December 17, with all of the action shown live worldwide on DAZN.

Madrimov (7-0, 5 KOs), the No.2 ranked Super-Welterweight with the WBA, outpointed the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Emmany Kalombo, who had won all fourteen of his professional contests inside the distance before facing ‘The Dream’, last time out at the Humo Arena in Tashkent on the undercard of Murodjon Akhmadaliev’s win over Ryosuke Iwasa.

France’s Soro (35-2-1, 24 KOs) is ranked No.1 in the world at 154lbs with the WBA and secured mandatory status in 2018 with a two-round wipe-out of the USA’s Greg Vendetti. The reigning WBA Gold World Super-Welterweight Champion scored a pair of knockouts over his compatriots Anderson Prestot and Cedric Vitu in 2019 but hasn’t fought since.

Uzbekistan’s undefeated Super-Lightweight star Shakhram Giyasov (11-0, 9 KOs) returns to action against Argentina’s Cristian Rafael Coria (29-8-2, 13 KOs) after successfully defending his WBA International Title with a third-round stoppage win over Patricio Lopez Moreno in April.

2016 Olympic Champion Hasanboy Dusmatov (3-0, 3 KOs) fights for the second time in 2021 against Mexico’s Jose Rivas (18-12-4, 10 KOs) following his impressive two-round demolition job on Muhsin Kizota to capture the WBA International Light-Flyweight Title in just his third outing in the professional ranks.

Tashkent’s own Dilshodbek Ruzmetov makes his professional debut at Light-Heavyweight, undefeated Lightweight Elnur Abduraimov (7-0, 6 KOs) continues his journey in the pros and Super-Welterweight prospect Ikboljon Kholdarov (1-0) looks to build on his pro debut win back in April and Super-Middleweight Bektemir Melikuziev (7-1, 6 KOs) looks to bounce back from his first career loss to Gabriel Rosado in June.

Monserrat Alarcon will make the third defense of her World Boxing Association (WBA) minimum lightweight championship against Silvia Torres on Saturday at the Polyforum in Leon, Guanajuato.

The WBA 102 lbs. champion will have a nice duel against Torres in which the Mexican pride will come out for the black and gold crown of the pioneer organization.

Alarcón arrives with a great winning streak that has made her the best in the category. She has not lost a fight since 2018 and has won six straight fights in that span to make clear her good sporting momentum.

Torres, on the other hand, wants to complicate the champion’s night and has enough experience to put her in trouble. She has already been interim champion in the past and has faced several good level opponents, making her a strong challenger for Alarcón.

The WBC held a press conference in Bangkok to promote next week’s World Boxing Council Night of Champions dinner and award event to celebrate all former and current WBC Boxing champions from Thailand.

The country has crowned 28 WBC champions throughout the decades and continues to be a strong flag bearer for the WBC and WBC affiliated titles in Asia.

The Night of Champions event will be staged at Bangkok’s world-famous Lumpinee Boxing Stadium on December 6.

Jermell Charlo and Brian Carlos Castaño fought one of the most exciting fights of the year on July 17 at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, concluding in a draw. Judge Tim Cheatham had it 114-114, Nelson Vázquez saw Jermell win 117-111 and Steve Weinsfield scored 114-113 for Brian. Immediately after the official result was given, there was talk of the rematch, as both warriors are still determined to show who is the best fighter at 154 pounds. ESPN confirmed that the rematch is being arranged for Saturday, February 26, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Jermell Charlo won the WBC belt in May 2016 by defeating John Jackson by knockout in the eighth round. Although he lost that title in December 2018 to Tony Harrison, he regained it a year later.

He defeated Jeison Rosario, in September 2020, wining the IBF and WBA championships by knocking him out in eight rounds. Brian Castaño became world champion in February 2021, when he defeated Brazilian Patrick Teixeira by an unanimous decision.

It was during the 2020 Virtual Convention, when the World Boxing Council decreed 2021 as: “The Year of Boxing,” as we found ourselves in the middle of a claustrophobic lockdown due to the pandemic.

So, a plan was created and established, to celebrate life through our sport, to commemorate the great anniversaries that would occur in 2021, and it was determined to work hard to make boxing resurface globally.

What an extraordinary year we are living through! There have been great contests, dramatic fights, spectacular knockouts, and wonderful celebrations of historical events, that we remember with great pride as well as fondness.

We also celebrated the annual Convention in Mexico City, with an impressive number of legendary champions and stars of the present and the future in attendance.

Included in “The Year of Boxing” are the some of the following celebrations of boxing’s iconic anniversaries, among many more :

– 100 years after the first million dollar gate in 1921, when Jack Dempsey beat Georges Carpentier, which generated $ 1,879,000.

– The 50th anniversary of the “Fight of the Century”, between Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier, at Madison Square Garden, NY.

– Promoters Don King and Bob Arum celebrate their 90th birthdays, respectively.

– The 40 years of the great fight between Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns.

– The 15th anniversary of the first WBC Women champion, Jackie Nava.

– 15 years after the creation of the WBC Cares program.

Regarding the activity in the ring, it all started on January 2 with Ryan Garcia rising from the canvas to knock out Briton Luke Campbell; Óscar Valdez conquered the WBC super featherweight world championship, dramatically knocking out his compatriot Miguel Berchelt.

Mexican Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada defeated Nicaraguan Román Chocolatito González in a war that shattered the record for punches thrown during a fight; Nonito Donaire of the Philippines became the oldest, at age 38, to win the bantamweight title, defeating Nordine Oubaali. Devin Haney was confirmed as a great champion by beating Jorge Linares at lightweight. Scotland hero, Josh Taylor, became super lightweight UNDISPUTED CHAMPION, by defeating José Carlos Ramírez, and obtaining all four belts; Jermell Charlo and Brian Castaño drew in an unforgettable war in which the four super welterweight belts were also on the line. Oscar Rivas became the first champion in the history of the Bridgerweight division.

The most outstanding actions in the ring, in 2021, have been the following:

– Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder met for the third time in what will certainly be awarded “The Fight of the Year”. After a solid start by the Wilder, he was knocked down in the third.

Meanwhile, Wilder knocked Tyson down twice in the fourth. Fury came back and sent him to the canvas in the ninth, following by a miraculous come back full of drama as Wilder almost had Fury out at the end of the tenth. Finally, Tyson Fury knocked him out in the eleventh. This was one of the very best fights in boxing’s elite division, the heavyweights.

– Australian George Kambosos surprised the world by dominating and defeating, seemingly invincible Teófimo López, thus becoming lightweight Undisputed champion.

– The great champ of today, the best pound for pound in the world, Mexican Saúl Canelo Álvarez fought four times in 11 months. And he conquered the WBC world super middleweight championship, and set his sights on becoming the first Undisputed champion in the history of that division.

He packed the Dallas Cowboys stadium with a record 73,116 fans defeating Billy Joe Saunders, subsequently dramatically knocked out Caleb Plant to become El Rey. It is the first time in history that there is no need to have ballots to vote on the fighter of the year category, Canelo Alvarez has been awarded the “Fighter of the Year award 2021 “.

The Year of Boxing is the spearhead of even more to come. However, there is great concern. Respect and order are being lost in various areas. Press conferences and weigh-ins have become a circus, with insults, pushing and shoving, and even punches thrown; this actions may generate interest in the fight, but put physical integrity of the fighters and everyone in attendance at risk and even endanger the realization of the fight. It is time to put a stop to this practice that has become all too common.

The sportsmanship, nobility and respect of the fighters and their corners, are undergoing unacceptable changes. Much has to do with the effect that social networks have. The extreme abuse and bullying by some so called media channels and from coward people hidden behind a phone or computer make fighters loose their mind and engage in unethical practices and actions.

This past Saturday we saw how two champions, who lost their titles, disrupted during the TV interviews, showing poor class and sportsmanship, taking away the moment of glory from their opponents who had just acomplished their dreams.

Boxing is not like that. It is a sport where opponents always hug each other, recognize their virtues, celebrate victories, but also accept defeats with grace and become friends for life.

TODAY’S ANECDOTE

My dad started a movement to ban boxer parents from the corners. I remember very well how he explained it: “Having your father in the corner is dangerous. The son feels too much pressure and when things don’t go well, they push themselves too hard so as not to disappoint him. On the other hand, parents are too demanding, our children are the best, they are invincible, we stretch the expectation too far.”

The fact is that many parents initiate their children into boxing, and it is practically inevitable that some will be the corner of their offspring.

Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz will meet on Sunday, December 5 for the World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight title at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

“Tank” will return to the ring to defend his 135 lbs. crown against the Mexican in a bout that promises a lot of action and excitement due to both fighters’ styles and the records.

Davis is one of the most impressive fighters in the world and at 26 years of age has won titles in three weight classes, which speaks of his quality and projection. He captured the lightweight belt in December 2019 when he defeated Cuba’s Yuriorkis Gamboa by unanimous decision in Atlanta.

He defended that crown against Leo Santa Cruz in October 2020 with one of the most impressive knockouts of that year and now he will make the second defense. It is worth mentioning that Davis fought last June against Mario Barrios at super lightweight and will now return to the lightweight division.

Isaac Cruz, on the other hand, appeared as the best replacement option once Rolando Romero (mandatory challenger) could not take the fight due to different problems. Cruz is one of the best opponents available for Davis as he is ranked No. 8 and is on an impressive streak.

The 23-year-old “Pitbull” has made a name for himself in the United States with his recent performances. In October 2020 he knocked out Diego Magdaleno and in 2021 he beat Argentina’s Jose Matias Romero and compatriot Francisco Vargas.

The bout will be broadcast on Showtime and all pre-fight promotional activities will take place this week. Davis is undefeated in 25 fights, 24 won by knockout, and Cruz has 22 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw and 15 knockouts.

The northern powerhouses of Tyne, Tees and Wear and Yorkshire enjoyed an
England Boxing National Youth Championships 2021 to remember in Banbury at the
weekend, as boxers from those regions claimed a string of titles.

No less than eight boxers from the North-East prevailed in Sunday’s finals, with wins
for Shaun Huddart (Birtley) and Lee Rogers (both Birtley), Alex Hubery (Shildon),

Zoe MacDonald (Houghton), Jude Percival (Wearmouth), Harley Carberry
(Billingham), Sophie Ray (Kenton) and Reece Readshaw (Phil Thomas) in their
respective categories.

The White Rose county were not far behind at the Spiceball Leisure Centre thanks to
successes for Sabba Hussain (Sharkey’s), Jack Lambert (Laisterdyke), Teagn Stott
(Sheffield Boxing Centre), Codie Smith (Hull Boxing Centre), Florence Mangeni
(Gladiators), Maddie Gittens (St Paul’s) and Darren Littlewood (Parson Cross).

Together with three more titles for the North-West region, it meant the three most
northerly England Boxing regions accounted for 18 of the 41 titles on offer.
That said, there was a wide spread of wins covering the length and breadth of the
nation, with every one of the 11 regions providing at least one champion.

As ever, there was a strong showing for London, who had seven victories, while the
Midlands also did well, with five boxers coming out on top.

In all, 38 clubs could boast a national title by the end of the weekend, and only three
of them (West Ham, Priory Park and Birtley) had more than one victor.

“Across the female and male categories, we saw some very accomplished
performances from young boxers who have clearly been working hard during the
break enforced by Covid-19,” said England Development Coach, Amanda Coulson.

“While there was no Championships for lots of the age groups last year, the Youths
did manage to get theirs in before the first lockdown, but, even so, there were still lots of boxers at the weekend who really came to our attention for the first time, as well as others who we already know about.

“Although there is no talent pathway this year, it is expected to be back up and
running next year, and we are inviting those who won Open class titles to attend a
Youth Champions Day with the England Talent coaches on Sunday 12th December
(at West Ham Boxing Club).

“Those who have performed well here, and, age-wise, are still eligible, have also put
themselves in a strong position for the England Boxing National Youth
Championships 2022, which are coming up in February.”

Open Class champions were rewarded with a championship belt, while Cadets and
Development boxers won a gold medal.

Finalists in all classes picked up silver medals and losing semi-finalists bronze
medals, while all boxers from the quarter-finals stages onwards received an England
Boxing certificate in recognition of their efforts.

Female boxers of the tournament, as selected by the team of watching England
Talent coaches, were Florence Mangeni (Development, Gladiators, Under 54kg),
Alex Bryant (Cadet, Trowbridge, Under 55kg) and Sacha Hickey (Open Class,
Peacock, Under 64kg).

Male boxers of the tournament were Louie Ward (Development, Rainham, Under
60kg), Tom Welland (Cadet, West Ham, Under 56kg) and Codie Smith (Open Class,
Hull Boxing Centre, Under 60kg).

The female bout of tournament was Alex Bryant (Trowbridge) v Acacia Barron
(Titleshot) in the Cadet category, while the male bout of the tournament was Lee
Rogers (Birtley) v Lewis Noakes (Hall Green) in the Open Class.

Swedish fighter Patricia Berghult (15-0) won the vacant World Boxing Council super-welterweight title by defeating Switzerland’s Olivia Belkacem (10-3) this Saturday in Sweden.

It was a tough fight for both of them, but Berghult showed the highest quality to win the biggest victory of her career.

The Judges’ scorecards were 97-93 twice and 96-94, all in favour of new champion Berghult.

The rematch of the unofficial 2021 New England Fight of the Year will headline the December 18th “New England Future VIII” event, presented by Rivera Promotions Entertainment (RPE), highlighting Webster’s (MA) first professional boxing event in 27 years, Webster Town Hall.

Puerto Rico-native Wilfredo “El Sucaro” Pagan (6-1-1, 3 KOs), fighting out of Southbridge (MA), and Bridgeport’s (CT) Carlos Marrero III (2-6-2), fought to an entertaining 6-round split draw this past August 14th in Worcester (MA).

“I am very excited we were able to get the rematch between Pagan and Marrero so quick,” RPE promoter Jose Antonio Rivera commented. “These two warriors put their heart and soul in their last fight and the fans were not disappointed. As a promoter these are the type of fights we love to put together. We are 3 weeks away from another great boxing event to see some talented up and coming future champions. Webster Town Hall is going to be electric!”

Pagan and Marrero will be fighting once again for the vacant New England Super Lightweight Championship in the Dec.18th 6-round main event.

The original Pagan-Marrero was non-stop, action-packed throw-down which the judges’ scored 58-56 in favor or Pagan, 55-59 for Marrero, and 57-57. The scoring was originally announced as a split-decision win for Marrero but, in retrospect, both fighters have taken the emotional outcome changes in stride. Some fuel, though, has been poured on the fire, largely through social media.

“When the fight was done,” Pagan commented, “as a fighter, you know if your fight was won, lost or very close. It was a little close, but that I won the fight. When the decision was announced that he had won, I closed my eyes, because it reminded me of my amateur career. I definitely won a few fights, I dominated, but I didn’t get the decision. Anything can happen when it goes into the judges’ hands. The judges didn’t see me winning, okay, but then they reversed the decision. I thought that they had gotten it right and I had won, but it was announced as a draw. It is what it is, okay, because the judges’ job isn’t as easy as people think, They saw ups and downs and had it a draw.

“II was thinking, here we go again, when it was announced a draw,” Marrero said. “For some reason, every time I fight in Massachusetts it’s always controversial. I had dropped to my knees in happiness and when the second announcement was made, I thought they were giving him the win. A draw? I’m not upset but I was surprised because I felt I had won. I went home thinking it was a draw, not a loss, and hopefully we’d have a rematch. And we do December 18th.”

Pagan vs. Marrero is an example of not needing two great fighters to have a great fight. They’re evenly matched and both fighters have tremendous heart.

“People had asked if I wanted a rematch and I said, yes, I’m thinking about it because it was a draw,” Pagan offered. “I wasn’t going to say no if it was offered, but the No. 1 reason for me to fight him is for the New England Championship. As long as I fought him for the title, I was for it because I want to fight for the belt and that’s what is my target. That was my feeling at the beginning, but things changed a little, because he changed. I don’t know what people told him, I’m not some kid and I had a lot of respect for him. But then he started texting me. I don’t know if it was to spice up this fight, but he crossed the line. He said a lot he shouldn’t have said. I’ always humble and respect all fighters because they’re risking their lives. I don’t know why he said what he did, but he’s given me even more motivation. I want that belt! I’m training double to beat him and shut his month. I still have some respect for him, but it’s not the same.

“I made a lot of mistakes in our first fight and made the fight much harder than it was supposed to be. I’ve been working on adjustment and, hopefully, on December 18th it will pay-off.”

“I always have a little room for improvement after a fight, and we saw some things I needed to improve for the rematch,” Marrero explained. “I’m more mentally prepared to do things and will be much smarter in the ring. Physically, I’m a lot stronger and sharper. The key for me is being mentally prepared and sharper. His (Pagan’s) opponent for his last fight fell out and my manager, Nate Torres, contacted me saying I had been offered an opportunity to fight Pagan. Without hesitation, I said yes. I’m always in the gym and ready to fight. I came in 2-pounds under and I’m on weight right now for this fight. The only thing I had to prepare for is he’s a southpaw.

“We had a great fight. He probably thinks he won a few rounds, I felt I won the fight. He missed more and I connected with the cleaner punches the judges could see. In the third or fourth round, I hurt him with a body shot. He folded and I hit him with another good shot.”

In the co-featured event, Danbury (CT) super lightweight Omar “The Beast” Bordoy (11-1, 3 KOs) faces an opponent to be determined in the 6-round match.

Promising Boca Raton (FL) super welterweight prospect Josniel “TG” Castro (7-0, 5 KOs) is steps up in terms of quality opposition in a 6-rounder versus Lenwood “Mr. Composure” Dozier (10-28-3, 5 KOs).

Worcester super middleweight Bobby “BH3” Harris III (3-0-1), a two-time national amateur champion and World Games Silver medalist, will meet David Rohn (0-10-1) in a 4-round super middleweight bout.

Undefeated Worcester cruiserweight prospect Derek “Hightower” Edmonds (3-0, 2 KOs), a 3-time N.E. Golden Gloves champion, has been added to the card in a 4-round bout against TBA.

Worcester middleweight Eslih Owusu (6-0, 4 KOs), a native of Ghana, faces Anthony Everett (1-0), of Lawrence, in a 4-rounder.

Also fighting on the under undercard in 4-round matches are New Haven (CT) super lightweight Anuel Rosa (2-0, 2 KOs) vs. Stacy Anderson (0-8), and Bridgeport super lightweight Oscar Bonilla (6-3-2, 1 KO) vs. Seth Basler (0-17).

In a much anticipated battle between undefeated Philadelphia based welterweights, Paul Kroll won an eight-round unanimous decision over Mark Dawson Jr. in front of an enthusiastic, near-capacity crowd at 2300 Arena in Philadelphia.

The bout headlined a six-bout card, promoted by RDR Promotions.

In round one, Kroll dropped Dawson with a hard right hand. With Dawson hurt, Kroll looked to close the show in the opening frame, but Dawson did well by holding on, and Dawson even landed a big left himself at the end of the round.

For the balance of the fight, Kroll boxed his way behind his jab. Dawson was looking to use his length and box from distance. Neither was able to have his opponent in trouble for the rest of the fight, but it was Kroll who was more consistent with his work and won by scores of 80-71 twice and 79-72 twice.

Kroll is 9-0. Dawson is 9-1-1.

Rashan Adams needed just 35 seconds to take care of Deo Kizito in a lightweight bout.

In the opening frame, Adams landed a big right hand that sent Kizito plummeting to the canvas, and the fight was stopped. Kizito needed oxygen, but was able to walk out of the ring.

Adams of Philadelphia is 2-0 with one knockout. Kizito of Baltimore..MD is 3-6.

Darryl Clark scored a dubious 2nd round stoppage over previously undefeated Derek Starling in a scheduled four-round heavyweight bout.

Starling was dominating the fight, and even landed a big flurry on the ropes in the 2nd round that seemed liked the fight was close to being stopped. Starling was looking to throw a left hand when he felt something in his and fell to the ground in pain. He could not continue and the fight was stopped at 2:59.

Clark of Houston, Texas is 1-1 with one knockout. Starling of Philadelphia is 4-1.

Isaiah Johnson stopped Anthony Young in round two of a scheduled four round junior welterweight bout.

Johnson nailed Young with a series of power shots to the head and body, and the fight was stopped at 2:01 of round two.

Johnson of Philadelphia is 3-0 with three knockouts. Young of Philadelphia is 0-4.

LaQuan Evans took a four round split decision over Eliezer Olmeda in a junior middleweight fight.

Evans of Philadelphia took two cards by 39-37 scores, and a third card saw Olmeda ahead at 39-37. Evans is now 5-2. Olmeda of New Jersey is 1-1.

Temirlan Raimkulov won a four-round unanimous decision over Kareem Gladney in a middleweight bout.

In round three, Raimkulov was cut around the left eye. In round four, Raimkulov landed an overhand right that sent Gladney into the corner and referee Eric Dali ruled a knockdown.

Raimkulov of Philadelphia won by scores of 40-35 on all cards and is now 4-1-2. Gladney of Philadelphia is 0-5.

And to be in Manchester Arena where I have had some great experiences is great as well.

Raymond Ford defended his WBA Continental Americas featherweight title with a great technical knockout victory over Felix Caraballo last Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, New York.

The young American had one of the best performances on the undercard of the event featuring George Kambosos and Teofimo Lopez in the main event. Ford displayed all his skills and got the technical knockout in the eighth round after dominating on all cards for the previous seven rounds.

The 22-year-old New Jersey native has been growing in his career over the past few months. It was the first defence of the WBA regional belt, which he won last August, and he did it on the undercard of a great evening to leave a great feeling.

The undefeated fighter has 10 wins, 1 draw and 6 knockouts. In the case of the Puerto Rican Caraballo, his record dropped to 13 wins, 4 losses, 2 draws and 9 knockouts.

Maikol Beaumont dominated Edixon Perez by split decision on Saturday and retained the World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedebol super bantamweight belt at the Centro Recreacional Yesterday, in Turmero, Venezuela.

The judges’ scorecards were 87-84, 83-88 and 86-85, evidenced a disputed bout that leaned in favor of Beaumont and that allowed him to retain the regional crown of the pioneer organization for the first time after the nine rounds.

it was the featured fight of the event and gave the 31-year-old fighter the opportunity to stay on the winning track and aim for better opportunities at the world level.

A native of the town of Cagua, Beaumont is a stylist who won the belt last August 7 by defeating the previously undefeated Yerny Betancourt. An important victory for the Venezuelan, who had previously lost to Colombian Jose Sanmartin in December 2019 and needed the victory. Now, with his first defense, he makes it clear that he had gotten the course and closes his year in a good way.

It was Beaumont’s 17th victory, with 4 losses, 1 draw and 7 knockouts, while Perez dropped his record to 24 wins, 7 losses and 18 defeats by stoppage.

Johan Gonzalez gave a great show of strength on Saturday night and won the World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedelatin super welterweight title by a fifth round technical knockout over his countryman Adrian Perez.

The event organized by Morón Boxing in association with the Probellum company had several interesting fights, including the victory of Gonzalez, who forced the referee to stop the fight with 1:37 minutes left in the fifth round.

The 30-year-old fighter worked with power punches to the face of Perez who was quite frontal in the fight and was able to hurt him as the rounds went by. The nicknamed “Manotas” started aggressively from the first bell to show that he was stronger and it was evident from the start that it was a matter of time before he would win.

Gonzalez won the regional belt and improved his record to 28 wins, 1 loss and 28 knockouts. Perez now has a record of 16 wins, 7 losses, 1 draw and 14 knockouts.

Ahead of the AIBA Extraordinary Congress on 12 December 2021, the Board of Directors met and unanimously approved Recommendations and Constitutional amendments established in a report of an independent Governance Reform Group (GRG), led by Professor Ulrich Haas. As AIBA delivers continued reforms in all areas, the independent GRG was appointed to review AIBA’s current governance structures, assess these structures against international best practice and issue concrete recommendations for further improvement.

AIBA President Umar Kremlev said, “Throughout the last year, AIBA has made continued progress in terms of sporting and financial integrity as well as good governance. Professor Haas and his team of independent legal experts have pointed us in the right direction, so that we can achieve a level of governance that is best practice for international federations. I congratulate my colleagues on the Board of Directors on the unanimous bold statement they have made today. I also urge all AIBA Member Federations to study the recommended changes and make a decision with the best interests of the future for our sport and our athletes in mind. Boxing should always come first.”

Amongst the proposed reforms, the independent GRG has recommended reducing the number of AIBA Board of Directors members, and today it has been agreed to limit the size of the Board to 18 members, including the introduction of 10 Special Members. Comprehensive eligibility checks will build on those introduced for the 2022 AIBA elections. They will be joined by skills assessments to ensure the best possible leadership team. The developments are in addition to the establishment of an independent Boxing Integrity Unit which will be empowered to address competition manipulation, abuse, harassment, eligibility checks of election candidates and other issues.

Changes to the functioning of the Audit Committee and Finance Committee will allow for better financial controls. A clearer differentiation of roles between advice in finance and audit has been proposed. The GRG also proposed establishing a new interdisciplinary Strategy Committee to review AIBA’s long-term strategy, develop mid-term and short-term goals.

“The proposed Constitutional amendments aim to significantly improve AIBA’s governance with focus on integrity, democracy, checks and balances. The list of top priorities and the final report are based on widely-accepted benchmarks for the highest levels of integrity and good governance, including those of ASOIF and IPACS. While they are yet to be approved by the Congress, this decision by the AIBA Board of Directors to adopt the measures proposed by our group can certainly serve as a basis for real and positive change,” – said Professor Haas.

Finally, the Board of Directors is recommending to the Congress that elections shall be conducted no later than 30 June 2022. As an option, these elections may take place during the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul, that were rescheduled to May 2022, however, the exact date to be determined by the Board on 31 December 2021 at the latest. Considerable changes are expected, including a provision selecting candidates to the governing bodies and the committees based on new eligibility criteria.

In a non-stop action fight between undefeated super bantamweight world champions, Stephen Fulton Jr. unified WBO and WBC titles with a majority decision victory over Brandon Figueroa live on SHOWTIME Saturday night in a Premier Boxing Champions event from Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas.

This showdown was set up earlier this year with each fighter capturing a world title by defeating an undefeated opponent, as Fulton (20-0, 8 KOs) bested Angelo Leo in January to capture the WBO belt, while Figueroa (22-1-1, 17 KOs) stopped Luis Nery in May to earn his WBC title. The two champions put on a memorable display, combining to throw over 1,700 punches across 12 rounds according to CompuBox.

“I was catching him in between every shot he was throwing,” said Fulton. “He was making it sloppy and rough.”

“I hurt him like five or six times,” said Figueroa. “I put the pressure on for the whole 12 rounds, landed the cleaner shots and hurt him. I thought I only lost four rounds at the most.”

In a surefire “Fight of the Year” contender, it was Figueroa’s activity (1,060 punches thrown) against Fulton’s accuracy (37% connect rate) squaring off throughout a narrow fight in which neither man was able to sustain momentum for long. In rounds four through seven, the fighters were separated by just two punches landed (103 to 101 for Figueroa).

“I was landing a lot of clean shots,” said Fulton. “He was throwing wild shots that the fans were enjoying, but he was hitting my arms a lot.”

In a memorable sixth frame, each fighter landed nothing but power shots with Figueroa connecting on 36 to Fulton’s 34. In a frantic 10th round, Figueroa looked to have Fulton hurt after numerous flurries of power punches. However, Fulton was able to recover in the final two rounds to win both the 11th and 12th on two judges’ cards.

That final push helped Fulton hold on with the score of 116-112 from two judges overruling a 114-114 card. After the fight, both fighters believed they had done enough to win and were open to battling again in a rematch.

“It was an amazing experience,” said Fulton. “The judges made their decision and we can run it back.”

“It was the robbery of the year,” said Figueroa. “The fans who watched this live know who won. I always come to fight and I did that all night.”

Top super bantamweight contender Ra’eese Aleem (19-0, 12 KOs) remained unbeaten with a majority decision over Mexico’s Eduardo Baez (20-2-2, 7 KOs) after 10 rounds of action.

“I’m coming off a long lay-off so I was a little bit rusty,” said Aleem. “I wanted to stop him, but he kept bringing it. I did what I had to do.”

Aleem showed off his versatile attack from the outset, flashing combinations combined with consistent activity that would carry him throughout the 10 rounds. Baez proved to be a sturdy challenge, and despite loading up for big right hands throughout the fight, he was able to land and keep Aleem from overwhelming him.

Aleem switched between southpaw and orthodox stances during the action to varying success, and overall held a 232 to 111 advantage in punches landed. Of those 232, Aleem connected on 90 body shots that helped him keep Baez at bay.

“I’m a dog,” said Aleem. “I grinded it out. I turned southpaw and got caught with some shots, but I hung in there. I can hang with anyone. It doesn’t matter who steps in there against me, I’m going to win.”

Baez fought valiantly through a cut on his forehead that opened up in the middle rounds due to an accidental headbutt. Aleem appeared to have Baez hurt in the ninth round with a counter right hand from the southpaw stance, but ended up holding on through round 10 to win the decision with scores of 98-92, 96-94 and 95-95.

“He was a tough Mexican fighter, but I got the job done,” said Aleem. “I want the winner of the main event. They can run but they can’t hide.”

Unbeaten bantamweight contender Gary Antonio Russell (19-0, 12 KOs) earned a close majority decision win by edging Mexico’s Alexandro Santiago (24-3-5, 13 KOs) in an action-packed fight that kicked off the telecast.

“I thought I won the fight and I thought I clearly out boxed him,” said Russell. “He was tough and tried to be rugged and aggressive. I had the headbutts from my last fight in the back of my mind, so I tried to keep it clean and get my rounds in.”

In a back-and-forth fight, Russell seemed to take the early lead with an effective jab and speed advantage that allowed him to land combinations from the southpaw stance. Russell out landed Santiago in each round across the first half of the fight, before Santiago began to turn the tide.

“It was a very close fight today,” said Santiago. “I have to press more to get the judges to see the fight in my favor. I saw in the beginning rounds that he was very repetitive. If I was more aggressive in the early rounds, I could have pulled off the win.”

“He was rough and he didn’t want to keep it clean, so I had to fight on the inside,” said Russell. “He’s a shorter fighter so I knew he was going to try his best to get on the inside against me.”

Throughout the middle rounds Santiago was able to close the distance and had success to the body, out landing Russell 51-23 in that department overall. With the contest in the balance, the final two rounds saw both men engage in toe-to-toe action looking for a blow to swing the bout in their favor.

After 10 rounds, Russell earned a narrow decision and remained unbeaten, with scores of 95-95 and 96-94 twice.

“I feel like I’m ready for the champions,” said Russell. “I’d love to fight John Riel Casimero for his belt. But I’ll fight any of the champions. People can look at this and say I’m not ready for the next step. But I know what I’m capable of.”

Two World Boxing Federation (WBF) championship fights are set to take place at the Complexe Sportif Bellegrave in Pessac, France on Friday, December 3.

On a card promoted by Spuc Boxe, Cruiserweight Brandon Deslaurier, 12-4-1 (1), will face Vladimir Reznicek, 10-4-2 (4), from the Czech Republic for the vacant WBF International title.

Reznicek has on more than one occasion pulled off an upset on his opponents turf, and will be looking to do just that against Deslaurier.

In the co-main event, Cameroon-born Francis Tchoffo, 19-19-1 (6), receives his second shot at the WBF International Middleweight title, taking on game youngster Nikola Vlajkov, 10-8-1 (6), from Serbia.

In 2019 Tchoffo just came up short in his first attempt to win the title, when he drew with Georgian Jemal Shalamberidze.

Vlajkov has won his last two bouts by stoppage, one of them in France last June when he handed prospect Medi Boufoudi his first defeat.

Riding that momentum, he will undoubtedly fancy his chances against Tchoffo in Pessac.

Homecoming At Last! The fight for the forgotten people (the homeless, poor, and downtrodden people) will benefit from this championship doubleheader.

The world’s greatest boxing promoter, Don King, will return to his home state of Ohio on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022, as he presents another blockbuster for the forgotten people, who won’t be forgotten any more, world championship fight pitting WBC Cruiserweight Champion Ilunga Junior Makabu and the number one challenger, WBC Silver Champion Thabiso Mchunu.

The WBC world championship fight for the love of the people, will be held at the W.D. Packard Music Hall in Warren, OH. In addition to Makabus-Mchunu, a special 10-round heavyweight sensational attraction will pit undefeated Jonathan Guidry (18-0-2, 10 KOs) of Dulac, Louisiana risking his perfect record against Alonzo Butler (34-3-2, 25 KOs) of Chattanooga, TN.

King, who represents Makabu, came to an agreement with Mchunu’s representatives on the 12-round world championship fight, and the winner will advance to fight Mexico’s great champion Canelo Alvarez in the month of May.

Alvarez will be ringside in Warren, OH to see who his next opponent will be.

“This is going to be one action packed WBC world championship fight with a very big fight on the horizon for the winner,” said King. “They are both warriors and this war for the recognition of the homeless will start the new year in grand style, recognizing the homeless, and helping others.”

Makabu (28-2 with 25 KOs) is from the Democratic Republic of The Congo, defended his championship in his hometown of Kinshasa as he stopped Nigeria’s Olanrewaju Durodola with two solid left hooks in the seventh round last December.

Makabu, who has won his last nine decisions, won the vacant title on Jan. 31, 2020 in winning a unanimous decision against Michael Cieslak.

Thabiso (23-5, 13 KOs), who hails from South Africa and is nicknamed “The Rock”, became the WBC Silver Titlist with a unanimous decision over Denis Lebedev on Dec. 21, 2019. He last defended his title and scored another unanimous victory over Evgeny Tishchenko on March 27, 2021. Thabiso has won his last four fights.

Mike Guy ended a two-year drought Saturday and brought home a new piece of hardware for his efforts.

The 40-year-old Los Angeles native won the vacant WBC USNBC super middleweight title at the MassMutual Center with a ninth-round knockout win over Worcester, MA, native Kendrick Ball Jr. (17-2-2), headlining an eight-fight card promoted by CES Boxing and snapping his own three-fight losing streak, which dated back to 2019.

Despite an impressive resume that included wins over Marco Delgado, Eric Moon, and Denis Douglin and a bout against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, the 5-foot-8 Guy entered (on paper) as the underdog against the 6-foot-2 Ball, who had recently captured the WBC USNBC Silver title and defended it for the first time in August against Tyi Edmonds.

Once the bell rang, Ball was no match for Guy’s aggressive, come-forward approach; Guy had little trouble working his way to the inside and eluding Ball’s jab, dropping Ball with a hard, overhand right in the opening round. Guy continued the onslaught in rounds three and four, though Ball did a better job defensively by not absorbing as much damage.

As Guy continued to throw every punch with bad intentions while working at a frenetic pace, the only question was whether or not he’d run out of gas in the later rounds. Ball boxed effectively in rounds five and six when he was able to use his height to his advantage, but Guy caught a second wind down the stretch and hurt Ball again in the ninth before catching him with a flurry against the ropes, landing several hard shots that forced the referee to step in at the 1:26 mark.

For Guy, it was his first win since beating Douglin in November of 2019, almost a full three years, while Ball hadn’t lost since 2018, a streak of eight consecutive wins entering Saturday.

In the co-main event, New London featherweight Shelly Vincent (27-2) made a triumphant return to the ring, outworking Chicago’s Shelly Barnett (5-6-2) en route to a 80-72 unanimous decision win on all three scorecards. Vincent, who hadn’t fought since 2019, looked sharp as ever at the age of 42, consistently staying a step ahead against the smaller, quicker Barnett, who jumped from 120 pounds to battle Vincent. Nicknamed “Shelito’s Way,” Vincent has now won four in a row and is now 15-0 lifetime fighting for CES.

Fresh off a comeback win in September, New Britain, CT, featherweight Nathan Martinez (7-2) lost a narrow split decision to Puerto Rico’s Jayron Santiago Lopez (8-8), 58-56, 56-58, 58-56, after the fight was stopped 44 seconds into the sixth and final round due to an accidental headbutt that opened a cut over Martinez’s right eye.

Martinez got rocked at the end of round one, but fought back to score a knockdown in the second round courtesy of two overhand rights that sent Lopez crashing to the canvas. Lopez continued to press the action and the two fought within arm’s length of one another for the majority of the fight, leading to the headbutt that opened the cut over Martinez’s eye. After a lengthy examination on the ring apron, ringside physical Dr. Peter Warinner stopped the fight, at which point the decision rested on the judge’s scorecards.

Springfield welterweight Jalen Renaud (7-0, 3 KOs), who bumped up to 154 for this fight, sent the crowd into a frenzy with arguably the knockout of the night, cracking Jurmain McDonald (5-5) of Jefferson City, MO, with an overhand right at 1:37 of the fourth round. The fight, scheduled for six rounds, was back and forth until Renaud caught McDonald with a thunderous shot, immediately prompting the referee to stop the bout as McDonald struggled to get to his foot. Renaud remains unbeaten at 7-0.

In one of the most exciting fights on the preliminary card, Springfield super featherweight Isaiah Cruz (2-0, 1 KO) stopped newcomer Darren Mima (0-1) with only two seconds remaining in the fourth and final round. Mima, an MMA veteran of 19 professional bouts making his boxing debut, absorbed some early damage in the opening round, but continued to fight back until Cruz knocked him down in the closing seconds of the final round. Mima tried to survive the bell, but Cruz rocked him two more times, prompting the referee to stop the bout at the 2:58 mark.

Making her second appearance of the year with CES and second since September, Connecticut welterweight Stevie Jane Coleman (2-1) ran her winning streak to two in a row with a unanimous decision win over LeAnn O’Malley (1-1) of Las Vegas, earning a 40-36 score on all three cards. Springfield featherweight Joshua Orta (8-0, 4 KOs) made quick work of Vermont’s Kody Murray (0-1), a late replacement due, via first-round stoppage at 2:24.

Providence’s Timothy Hatfield (1-0, 1 KO), a former defensive tackle for the Brown University football team, made a huge splash in his pro debut, stopping Woburn, MA, heavyweight Rodrigo DaRocha (0-2) at 1:03 of the opening round.

Troy Jones is in no mood to hang around as he attempts to be fast-tracked through the super middleweight division.

He’s in action again at the Holiday Inn Queensway, in Birmingham city centre, on the evening of Thursday December 2, as part of a show staged by BCB Promotions.

He only made his pro debut on October 16, as part of a new stable of fighters trained by John Costello, a group that includes his cousin Brandon.

All of them are Brummies, who are based in Chelmsley Wood, and have been mentored by Costello since they were children. Jones is no different.

The 23-year-old represented Solihull Boxing Club, as an amateur, but reached two area finals and a national semi-final, in the NABC and England Elite Championships.

His unpaid record culminated with 12 wins from 21 bouts, but 11 of those victories came at senior level, after he returned to boxing from four years out.

Jones has yet to claim a title, but he can see that changing if he can make progress quickly in the pro ranks. His pro debut gave him cause for optimism.

Experienced adversary Daniel Borisov gave height away and rarely got past the jab during their clash, while being stung to the body himself when Jones attacked.

A points whitewash success from their four-rounder, scored 40-36 by referee Kevin Parker, reflected Jones’ dominance over the sessions.

He’s now looking to kick on by making it 2-0 before the close of the year, before resuming his efforts at the earliest opportunity in early 2022.

Jones said: “I was straight back into it, after my debut. I want to get busy and pick up where I left off. I did have a holiday, though, that was already booked.

“It was nice to get some winter sun but, in the seven days that I was in Cyprus, I kept up my running and did plenty of shadow-boxing. As soon as I got back, it was back to camp.

“It will be good to get my name out there again and show people what I’m all about. I knew, when I turned over, that I wanted to move quickly in the pro game.

“You only get experience by fighting and I only had a relatively short amateur career. I’ve been boxing since I was seven, but I drifted out of it for a few years.

“When I started, I was a chubby kid who was the last to be seen when it was time to do circuits. I liked sparring and I loved a scrap, so I was always getting into trouble at school.

“I hope to tell my grandchildren one day that I lost my first six, as an amateur, and went on to a be a successful pro. I see a bright future for myself, I’m in this for success and to win titles.

“I never actually boxed for John (Costello, current pro coach), I was with Solihull Boxing Club and went up against some top lads, in the championships.

“I may not have won national titles, but I know what it likes to take on quality opponents and I think that will stand me in good stead.

“I was happy with my performance, on my debut, and the win came from sticking to the jab. I’m 6ft 4in, so it suited me to keep it long, when he was looking to get in close.

“I hurt him a couple of times, too, with straight right hands to the body, but he was tough. There were other things that I wanted to do, though, which I’ll be looking to get in next time.”

Manchester AO Arena, Manchester – 19 February 2022

Bitter rivals Amir Khan and Kell Brook will enter the ring on February 19, 2022 to square off in one of the most highly-anticipated encounters in British boxing history.

BOXXER and Sky Sports will formally announce the fight at a press conference in London this afternoon, with the news set to delight boxing fans who have clamoured to see the two antagonists do battle for nearly a decade.

The long-awaited encounter will take place in Manchester, with thousands of fans in attendance at what is certain to be a sold-out AO Arena.

“Khan and Brook are icons of the sport in Britain and this will be an iconic encounter. Their rivalry has simmered for years, they are still by far the best welterweights in the country and the eyes of the world will be on them when they square off in February to finally settle the question about which of them is the better man,” said Ben Shalom, BOXXER’s founder and CEO.

“This is a fight every boxing fan has wanted to see for years. It’s the biggest fight in British boxing right now outside of Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury and we’re delighted to be able to deliver this legacy-defining clash live and exclusively on Sky Sports Box Office.”

Adam Smith, Head of Boxing Development at Sky Sports, said “Amir Khan against Kell Brook is here at last and it’s going to be an unforgettable night when these two huge names in British boxing finally settle their long-running rivalry. Khan and Brook have been asked about this fight for a decade, despite their success as world champion, and now we will get the answer in February.

“Sky Sports has covered some of the biggest fights of both Khan and Brook’s careers, but this one is special. This is a heated feud which has simmered for years and there’s so much pride at stake. It’s a real 50-50 fight and we will find out in February who takes it!”

Kynoch Boxing are delighted to welcome Robbie Connor to their team. Robbie is the Scottish Elite Amateur Champion at 81KG and he is now ready to step into the pro ranks.

Robbie commenced his boxing career in England before joining the Bellahouston Boxing Club in Glasgow. Robbie will compete at Light-Heavyweight and his debut will take place early in 2022.

Sam Kynoch commented: “Robbie has been sparring at the Kynoch Boxing Gym for years and I have always thought that his style is suited to the pro ranks. I am pleased that he is now making the transition to the pro game and to be guiding his career. We are gearing up for a huge 2022 so he is coming on board at just the right time”.
