Benavidez vs. Uzcategui postponed – Benavidez tests positive for COVID
David Benavidez vs. José Uzcategui
The WBC super-middleweight elimination bout between David Benavidez and José Uzcategui scheduled for August 28 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, has had to be postponed due to a positive COVID-19 result from Benavidez.
Benavidez has already held the title twice. He tested positive for prohibited substances in 2018 and after recovering and regaining the title he lost it again by not being able to make the weight limit of his division in 2020.
“This hurts! First, I would like to thank those of you who have sent me good wishes. I’m not sure how I got Covid-19, but it’s not a joke! For those of you who have survived this virus, you all know what I am going through. To those of you who may have lost someone to the virus, my condolences!
“I thought I was safe, carefully trying to follow the guidelines for protection. Fortunately, my team is safe, and I am quarantined away from them and my family. Stay tuned to my social media for updates on the fight, ”Benavidez commented in a statement.
