Canelo is WBA Fighter of The Month
Josh Taylor & Brandon Figueroa Honorable Mentions
The World Boxing Association (WBA) published its May rankings, with all the movements and individual awards, featuring Saul “Canelo” Álvarez as Boxer of the Month.
In addition to the Mexican’s award, Josh Taylor and Brandon Figueroa shared the Honorable Mention thanks to their excellent performances.
“Canelo defeated Billy Joe Saunders on May 8 at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas. The best pound-for-pound fighter of today reduced the Briton’s good boxing to demolish him gradually until Saunders decided not to come out to the ninth round due to a fracture in the area of his eye.
Alvarez made the second defense of his WBA 168-pound Super Middleweight Super Championship against one of the most uncomfortable and complicated opponents he could find in the division. Now, he anticipated his return to the ring in September although his opponent has not been confirmed yet. He has the WBA, WBC and WBO belts, he only needs to get the IBF belt, which is held by Caleb Plant.
Meanwhile, Taylor got an Honorable Mention thanks to his great victory over Jose Carlos Ramirez, which made him the undisputed super lightweight champion in Las Vegas on May 22. The Scottish fighter won the unanimous decision, retained his WBA and IBF belts and won the WBC and WBO versions held by the Mexican American.
In the case of Figueroa, he also had a brilliant performance on May 15 when he knocked out Luis Nery. “The Heartbreaker” went from less to more to get a great knockout with a punch to the mid zone and retain his WBA 122 lbs. title and win the WBC title.
In addition to the individual awards for the month of May, the rankings lists for the fifth month of the year are also published and can be reviewed in the corresponding section of the official website of the pioneer organization.
