Dennis Hobson: This kid excites me, he’s got a bit of everything

Promoter Dennis Hobson has promised Northeast fight fans some big nights of boxing after adding star amateur, Tommy ‘Hitman’ Hodgson, to his burgeoning stable.

Hodgson, from North Shields, is a huge coup for the Sheffield fight figure with the 25-year-old a much sought after man after his feats in the unpaid code.

In an extensive amateur career with more than 70 bouts under his belt; Hodgson is a former Team GB member, a Senior ABA Champion, and also represented England on multiple occasions.

Since turning pro in August, the lightweight has already turned heads with a brace of impressive wins and will be out again on December 17 at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Arena, live on Fightzone.

Hobson has been central to the careers of a variety of top fighters, including the likes of former world champions Ricky Hatton and Clinton Woods, and is convinced Tommy is destined for major honours.

“I said after he boxed on our show in Sheffield that it was probably the best debut I’ve seen, and I’ve been in the game for 30 years,” explained Dennis.  “This kid excites me, he’s got a bit of everything – spite in his punches, he’s agile, has a great boxing brain and was a top amateur.  He’s also got a big fanbase.  We’ve signed a great kid and with our blueprint of manoeuvring fighters into titles – Tommy’s a great bet to win something major.

“We’ve also just signed another Northeast fighter, Anth Ornsby, and I’m looking forward to getting up there and putting on some cracking shows.  Tommy and Anth will both go on to win things and it’ll be great to do it all up in the Northeast.  The fans up there have great passion, and I can’t wait to have some special nights.  I love the big fight nights; there’s nothing like it  and that’s why I’m still in the game.”

First started boxing?  I started boxing when I was 13 years old.

Any amateur achievements?  How many bouts did you have?  Win/lose?  I had over 70 bouts, lost 13, was a Senior ABA Champion, Northern Area belt holder, and England representative.

Favourite all-time fighter?  My favourite all time fighter would have to be Ricky Hatton.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a boxer?  My strengths would have to be being a sponge, taking everything in and picking them up quickly.  My weakness is that I’m a perfectionist and want everything to happen overnight.

What’s the hardest thing about being a pro fighter (so far)?  Hardest thing about being a professional fighter is probably speaking in front of a camera, but I’m coming to terms with it and becoming a natural!

What weight do you see yourself winning belts at?  I will be winning titles in the lightweight division.

Which current British fighters are impressing you the most?  There are a lot of British fighters that are looking very good.  I enjoy sparring Maxi Hughes. I like the look of Connor Benn at the minute; I would say he’s Britain’s most improved fighter.  Tyson Fury is a legend in and out of the ring, he’s a class act and the number one heavyweight on the planet.  I also like Dalton Smith and Dennis McCann – both top fighters.

Your favourite meal?  Indian.  Tikka Dansak (Madras hot), Paneer Tikka, spicy chips, chilli cheese and garlic naan … WALLOP!

Favourite film?  Dead Man’s Shoes

Which actor would you choose to play you in a movie about your life?  Kevin Hart all day.

Favourite city?  Got to be Newcastle.

Your job outside of boxing (if you have one)?  Boxing is my full time job luckily; I have done bits on the tools too.

Your boxing ambitions? What do you want to achieve in the sport?  My ambitions in boxing are to make sure I give it my all and leave the game with a nice bank account and all my marbles.

Who is your biggest inspiration?  My family is my biggest inspiration.

Tell us an unusual fact about yourself?  I was once very good at football and had trials for Newcastle.  At the age of 13, when I first started boxing I was playing football at a very high level as well. Also another one is my first ever boxing bout I was sick during the fight and the ref had to stop it!

What is the first thing you’d buy if you won the lottery?  The first thing I would buy if I won the lottery is my dad a new allotment and my mam the best perfume in the world as she’s obsessed!

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?  In five years time I see myself strapped up and in my prime, hopefully.

What is the meaning of life?  The meaning of life is to be happy. If you’re happy in what you do, in my eyes you’re winning.
