Fighters Square Off at Rumble on the Rock Final Press Conference
JJ Metcalf and Michael McKinson both made their intentions clear as they squared off with their respective opponents at the final press conference ahead of Saturday’s huge Rumble on the Rock event.
The fights take place on the undercard of the rematch between Alexander Povetkin and Dillian Whyte at the Europa Point Sports Complex, Gibraltar, live on Sky Sports and DAZN.
Metcalf (21-0, 13 KOs) faces Cheeseman (16-2-1, 9 KOs) for the vacant British super-welterweight title, and he’s determined to add another belt to his collection.
Metcalf said: “It’s a must win for me on Saturday. I’ve been owed this chance for a while and I’m going to take the chance with both hands.
“I grew up watching my dad and I was proud of him, and now it’s my turn to return the favour. I’m soaking this all up and I’ve been on big cards before, so I’m more than ready.”
Cheeseman said: “It’s lovely to be part of a big event, but it’s just about business now. I’m in fight mode and ready to get the win on Saturday.
“I think there will be a lot of nervous energy with JJ, but I’ve done this time and time again. This feels natural for me, and I’ve improved a lot. I feel I’ll be 10 times the fighter that I was against Sam Eggington in my last fight.”
Elsewhere, unbeaten fighters collide as McKinson (19-0, 2 KOs) takes on Kongo (12-0, 7 KOs) for his WBO Global welterweight title, and the Portsmouth fighter is ready to arrive on the big stage.
McKinson said: “I’ve been waiting a long time for this opportunity. I believe I’m the best welterweight in the UK, and to prove that I have to beat Chris Kongo on Saturday.
“There is nobody in the UK that has a style like mine, and I’m a problem for anybody. I’m a smart fighter too, and whatever he wants to bring I can adapt to.
“It should be an exciting fight. I’ve been taking it all in over the last few days and it’s been an amazing week. Now I’ve got to get the win.”
Kongo said: “When I came into this sport, these were the fights that I’ve always wanted. I don’t want to fight journeymen or people that I can knock out in a round, I want competitive fights.
“I’ve been calling out McKinson for a long time, and I’m happy that the fight is on. A lot of people don’t like to fight southpaws, but I don’t mind. He’s got a good record and is a good fighter, and I like to fight the best.”
