Is Evander Holyfield Next For Mike Tyson? (+ Tyson vs Holyfield 1&2 Fight Videos)
Is Evander Holyfield Next For Mike Tyson?
Holyfield is Asking $25 Million For The bout!
With the global success of the weekend (against Roy Jones Jr.) and with the topic very hot at the moment with Tyson’s return, the question is, is Evander Holyfield Next For Mike Tyson?
Tyson is back and will be for a while. Some may moan at the idea whilst many embrace his return, but that is one thing that has always followed Tyson…..headlines.
One thing is for sure, you can’t think about Tyson and not forget the two fights he had with Evander Holyfield (in 1996 & 1997). Or should I say a bite from Holyfield. Yes, you read right.
Unless you have been hiding beneath a rock throughout the nineties (even my 11 year old daughter knows about it and it was not from me), in the rematch with Holyfield in 1997, out of frustration (not for hunger) Tyson decided to chump at Holyfield’s ear, spitting out the raw flesh that was once attached to Holyfield on the canvas they were fighting on. Yes, he was disqualified.
If you have been hiding under a rock, here are the two fight videos with Holyfield on our website (just click each title to play):

Mike Tyson vs Evander Holyfield 2 (1997)
In short, in 1996, Holyfield upset the odds in dethroning Tyson who was heavyweight champ once again, only for Tyson to be disqualified in the rematch in 1997 for devouring Holyfield’s right ear.
Since then, many fans have been wanting a third bout, but it never materialised with Tyson retiring in 2005 and Holyfield in 2011. At that point in time, I can understand any reluctance from the Holyfield camp as the idea of losing any other body parts in a boxing match must be quite, well, terrifying.
So when it was announced earlier this year that Tyson was returning, Holyfield naturally went straight into training as he and many others thought he would be the natural opponent. Tyson has seemingly mellowed over time so the risk of any body dismemberment seemed low and as his finances over the years had dwindled (even to the point of appearing on Celebrity Big Brother in the UK), this seemed the perfect time to boost the retirement fund.
But no, it was not meant to be as Tyson opted to go for an opponent in Jones Jr. that had the reputation of now having a glass jaw. There may have been reluctance in Tyson’s part (just speculation) as many people believe that Holyfield simply has Tyson’s number as a fighter, even if now he is aged 58.
Even at this advanced middle age (or is it beyond that?), Holyfield is as fit as a fiddle and has reportedly never been out of shape. Looking good is one thing but the usual video’s doing the rounds on social media show Holyfield has not lost his way around a ring, even if it is at a much slower pace.
“It definitely wasn’t me,” Holyfield told the I Am Athlete podcast. “I wasn’t getting in the ring for less than $25 million.
“I beat him twice. I felt it was wrong for me to have to ask him to fight me. I don’t know (if he’s scared). I would never ask a person that.
“If they called me to fight in two days, I’d be there to fight in two days.”
Tyson has said he would like to speak with Holyfield personally as when the two teams representatives talk, the idea seems to quickly go out of the window (maybe Holyfield’s camp are asking for too much danger money in the event of Tyson taking a liking to his ears again).
“Maybe Evander needs to talk to me because every time my business associates talk to his business associates, it doesn’t turn out well,” Tyson explained.
“So I don’t know. If you could see what we made tonight, if these guys really care about the welfare of Evander they would have had this fight with Evander. Maybe we’ll do another but whoever’s he’s with who’s handling him is totally wrong.
“This is where I belong,” Tyson said. “I never once, even when my first day sparring and I got my rib cracked and a guy was just smashing my jaw, I never once said ‘what the hell am I doing here? Am I crazy?’ I just said I’m in the right place. I said I’m in the right place.
“Very happy I did this. I will do it again. The sky’s the limit with this place. We have so many great legends that are interested in jumping on board and being involved with this program.”
With the reported purses involved (Tyson was reportedly paid $10 million and Jones Jr. $1 million – not quite sure how that split worked out), there will I’m sure be many senior fighters that have spent too much money on child support or visited too many strip clubs resulting in their bank balances not what they once were.
But, Evander Holyfield? With the success (with the exception of the YouTuber fight) all went very well. Yes, I can see the third bout happening with Holyfield. I just hope Snoop Dogg will be doing the commentary.
