Jeremia Nakathila surprises Miguel Berchelt in Las Vegas
Miguel Berchelt vs. Jeremia Nakathila Result
Resorts World Las Vegas, USA – 26 March 2022
A grim night for former WBC super featherweight champion Miguel “Alacran” Berchelt, coming unstuck in his lightweight debut against Namibia`s lanky, rangy Jeremia Nakathila who outpunched and overwhelmed him, so Referee Russell Mora stopped the contest after six torrid rounds.
It was Miguel`s first fight in thirteen months, following his shuddering tenth round KO title loss to Oscar Valdez, after a bout of covid 19. This latest contest at Resorts World Las Vegas, was no picnic either. Miguel aged thirty (38-3, 34 KO`s) who`d looked so big in the super feather division, was now giving away three inches in height and fighting a noticeably physically bigger man. His opponent from Windhoek, Namibia, who`s two years older, soon took the wind out of Miguel`s sails, but it was far from a becalming experience.
Jeremia (23-2, 19 KO`s) who lost a UD to Shakur Stevenson last June, after being dropped in the fourth, got back to winning ways in October with a TKO victory over Ndodana Ncube and for this one, he appeared utterly unfazed by the occasion.
Jeremia connected with a left uppercut in round one and was throwing a lot of punches, especially long straight rights. Miguel moved around intelligently using the ring and landed a smart left hook, only to be clipped with a hard right. It was obvious from the outset, that Jeremia was trying to back him up and was going all out for the KO.
Two more hard rights from Jeremia in round two and some of his punches to the body, straying a trifle low. Miguel was establishing a left jab, but appeared too upright, uptight, leaden and slow, again being caught by a couple of long rights and a left hook, which put him under pressure.
In round three Referee Russell Mora, warned Jeremia to keep his punches up, and shortly thereafter the nature of the fight changed, as Miguel was caught with a stiff, jarring left jab and went down. He rose quickly and absorbed a lot of punches as Jeremia went in for the finish, which didn`t yet materialize.
In round four Miguel finally started to come into his own, landing a hard left, right combination to the head, but he walked into accurate left jabs, followed up by big rights. One of those rights hit him flush in the face just before the bell rang.
in round five Miguel dug deep and rallied landing with both hands, but Jeremia responded with venom and those rights kept landing. In round six a huge right from Jeremia knocked Miguel`s mouth guard half way across the ring, and he got a slight respite. Two even bigger rights shook him and his nose started bleeding. He was getting hammered but showed the bravery plus tenacity of a champion.
Referee Mora went to Miguel`s corner during the minute`s break following the lop sided hammering sixth. On the advice of the Ring Doctor and using his own judgment plus ultimate authority, he waved off the fight. Tears of disappointment from Miguel and beaming joy from Jeremia. Both sporting embraced and Miguel congratulated him.
Afterwards, Miguel stressed that he respected the decision of the Referee, but thought he could have continued. He said: “I`m going to rise from this. The great champions are those who arise and I`m going to come back stronger than ever.”
Jeremia said: “I stuck to my gameplan and capitalized!”
