Jessica McCaskill Confirmed as The Best Welterweight in The World
Undisputed world welterweight champion, American Jessica McCaskill, successfully defended her titles by defeating former Norwegian champion Cecilia Brækhus by a UD, in an eagerly awaited rematch, this Saturday, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
Jessica McCaskill (10-2, 3 KOs) came out very aggressive from the start, against Cecilia Braekhus (36-2, 9 KOs), who had to soak up a lot of punches.
The first round was a firestorm. Jessica landed a lot of hard rights, which hurt The First Lady of Boxing and this continued at a tearing pace up to round four, also complimented with peppering uppercuts. Cecilia was able to retaliate from time to time, but with spasmodic success. From the fifth onwards the pace slowed and Cecilia was able to land more left jabs and long rights. In the seventh Referee Rafael Ramos stopped the action and deducted one point from Cecilia for holding.
By the ninth, Jessica had a swelling under her left eye, while Cecilia`s left cheek was puffed up. Cecilia was connecting with rights, but it was not enough to offset Jessica`s overall sustained attack throughout. Jessica is thirty six and Cecilia is thirty nine. Those extra years do count. Jessica McCaskill was dominant. Yet Cecilia fought with courage and sheer grit.
All three judges saw McCaskill winning: 100-89, 99-90, 98-91.
