José Ramírez Dedicates Fight to Workers of Central Valley of California
World Boxing Council champion José Carlos Ramírez, the pride of California’s Central Valley, will fight Scottish champion Josh Taylor for the undisputed world championship on Saturday, May 22.
The winner will become the second champion to win the 4-abody titles in the 140-pound division, after Terence “Bud” Crawford.
Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) has been a world champion since March 2018, when he defeated Amir Imam by unanimous decision to win the vacant WBC title.
After the Imam’s victory, he contacted prominent coach Robert Garcia, and the duo have combined to go 4-0 in world title fights.
Ramirez knocked out Maurice Hooker in July 2019 to unify world titles and defended his belts last August with a majority decision against former world champion Viktor Postol.
Ramírez, a proud son of Mexican immigrants hailing from Avenal, California, is an agent of social change in his community. He has devoted his time and resources to countless causes, including cancer research, water rights for area farmers, and support around COVID-19 for Central Valley workers.
“I want to make history by becoming the first boxer of Mexican descent to hold the top four world title belts. I dedicate this fight to the farm workers of the Central Valley, who are out there every day helping feed the world. This fight is big, but nothing is bigger than vaccinating farm workers right now in the Central Valley, ”said Ramírez.
Promoted by Top Rank, Ramirez-Taylor will be broadcast live on ESPN and ESPN + beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET / 5:30 p.m. PT.
