Julio César Martínez Waiting For Mandatory Challenger McWilliams Arroyo
Julio César ‘Rey’ Martínez vs. McWilliams Arroyo
Recovered from the fracture he suffered to his right hand, Julio César ‘Rey’ Martínez, flyweight champion of the World Boxing Council, is back in the gym waiting for the date to defend his title against the mandatory challenger, Puerto Rican McWilliams Arroyo.
Martínez, who missed for the second time, the opportunity to fight as a backup for ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, shared how his injury occurred. “We were boxing with a guy a little heavier than me, I flipped him over and and that’s where the inflammation of the hand began to hurt. When we went to the doctor, he diagnosed me with a metacarpal fracture, so the fight was cancelled.
“We are seeing if in May we ready for action. We are discussing that with Eddy Reynoso and in turn, with the promoter Eddie Hearns,” said the champion.
McWilliams, who was a mandatory challenger for the division, knocked out Abraham ‘Choco’ Rodríguez to win the interim division title.
Martínez thanked Ciro Nucci, President of the Mexico City Boxing Commission, for his support concerning his recent injury. “The truth is, since I was national champion, he has given me his unconditional support. He took me to his specialist, and he helped me a lot.”
