Leigh Wood comes from behind to stop Michael Conlan in Nottingham

Leigh Wood retained his WBA featherweight title after a final round stoppage win over Michael Conlan on Saturday.

The fight main evented a Matchroom Boxing show which took place at a sold out Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham, and was broadcast live on DAZN.

The fight got off to an incredible start, as Conlan (16-1, 8 KOs) knocked down Wood with a huge shot at the end of round one. Wood (25-2, 15 KOs) dug in deep and displayed immense bravery, getting up and having some success of his own as the bout progressed.

Wood claimed a knockdown of his own in round 11, but the view was that Conlan was still ahead on the cards. Wood then ensured it wouldn’t go to the judges, knocking out Conlan in the 12th and final round to earn the win.

Conlan received medical treatment following the bout, and has received well wishes from throughout the boxing community who wish him a speedy recovery.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said the Belfast fighter was “conscious and talking” and awaiting the result of a CT scan at the time of writing.

Elsewhere on the card, Gary Cully (14-0, 8 KOs) picked up the biggest win of his career as he claimed a fifth round stoppage win over Miguel Vazquez (44-11, 17 KOs).

Cully dropped Vazquez in the third, and while the Mexican showed great heart and courage to continue, another big combination from Cully in round five was enough to end the contest, handing the Irishman a massive win.

Nico Leivars also entered the paid ranks in style, as he successfully won his professional debut against Jose Hernandez. Leivars (1-0) dropped Hernandez in round four, on his way to a comfortable 40-34 points win.
