Leigh Wood & Xu Can exchange words at final press conference
Leigh Wood vs. Xu Can
Matchroom Fight Camp, Brentwood, Essex, England 31/7/21
Leigh Wood says he will be achieving the dream he had when he first stepped into the gym as a kid by defeating Xu Can in their world title showdown on Saturday.
Wood (24-2, 14 KOs) challenges Xu Can (18-2, 3 KOs) for his WBA featherweight title during the launch of Matchroom Fight Camp this weekend, live on DAZN.
The two men went head to head at the final press conference on Thursday, and Nottingham fighter Wood opened up on how much it would mean to him to become world champion.
Wood said: “These are the things you dream of when you step into the gym as a kid. It’s not good enough just to fight for a world title, I need to win it, and I’m confident of getting that done on Saturday.
“I got myself ready at short notice because I was always in the gym ticking over and staying ready. In February I only had a short time with Ben Davison, but I listened to him and won the British title.
“I’ve been back in the gym since picking up even more things and I understand fully what I’m doing and the tactics I need to pull off, and that will be a massive key factor on Saturday.
“Thera are so many names at featherweight, and it’s red hot even in Britain, but I can’t look too far ahead. I’ve got to be extremely focused on Saturday as it could all dissolve into the abyss.
“I truly believe I will win this fight. It’s not going to be easy, and I might have to go through the trenches, but with my tactics and everything we’ve been working on, I believe that will be key to getting the victory across the line.”
Can said: “I am in the best condition, I’ve not been able to fight for 20 months, but now I’m fully prepared and I’m looking forward to Saturday.
“I’m fully focused on this fight. Leigh Wood is a great fighter and I take this very seriously, so I’m not looking past him. We will put on a big show for the fans and I take the victory back to my family, nothing can stop me.”
