Mauricio Sulaiman Celebrates Seventh Anniversary of WBC Presidency
Today is the seventh anniversary of when Mauricio Sulaiman Saldivar, was unanimously voted President of the World Boxing Council, and during his time as leader, he has consolidated, by maintaining stability, while bringing about innovation through brilliant achievements.
Following the death of WBC Lifetime President Don Jose Sulaiman Chagnon, who faithfully and wonderfully served this organization for thirty eight years, there was a meeting in Camino Real Hotel in Mexico City, to choose a new Leader. As with the beginning of his beloved Father`s era, each and every Governor of the WBC showed total, complete and unwavering confidence in Mauricio. Mauricio then set to work to justify this, each and every day, from then until today and forever.
In so doing he realized better than anyone else that this would involve a three hundred and sixty five days per year commitment, each and every year, with an input of one hundred and ten percent commitment as a life`s work. That is so much more than a nine to five job.
Every four years there`s a vote and Mauricio is assessed and judged upon his work, ability, wisdom and foresight, in order to advance the WBC, securing and constantly bettering its position as the largest and most important organization in Boxing. While planning its way forward, as the primary standard bearer, for excellence, values, and maintaining the safety of boxers themselves as the main priority. A bedrock “Raison d`etre.”
Nothing in sport or life remains the same. Evolution via innovation is, vital in order to achieve success. At the start of a new and challenging era, Mauricio set out to enact change plus improvement and with it, a bright future for the Sport we all so love.
Together with Dr Margaret Goodman he established an integrated anti doping system via VADA, to insure that drug cheats would rapidly discover, understand and appreciate that it`s impossible to ingest performance enhancing substances, which threaten the very well being and very lives of boxers, and get away with it. That system of protection, involves both men`s and women`s boxing. Knowledge through education is…enlightening power.
Together and supported by his immediate family reinforced by the global WBC family, Mauricio embraced Pope Francisco`s Scholars Occurants program extending it to BoxVal, specifically aimed at inspiring the unity friendship, confidence and inclusion of young people all around the World. As John F Kennedy said: “There is a new World to win.”
There has been an emphasis placed upon constantly conducting courses for Referees, Judges and ring officials to improve performance, and this has been crystalized by the creation of the WBC University, staffed by teaching specialists, who daily work in Boxing. Also, instant replays because even the keenest eye sometimes misses split second action. Experiments to increase the number of judges and to improve their vantage points. This also involves live feeds of the action to the homes of selected judges, so there can be a wider scope of fair plus accurate judgement. The introduction of earphones, in order to diminish and minimize crowd noise and distractions from the specific job at hand. More than important, because the careers of boxers are entrusted to their experienced eyes and sound judgement.
Plans to unify world titles with the ambition to have one boxing champion for each of the eighteen divisions. Not being cautious or afraid to make bold decisions notably the creation of the new Bridgerweight category to span the rapidly increasing size and weight disparity between cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, which if unchecked will cause grave risk to fighters who can be vastly outweighed.
Mauricio has also played close attention to medical aspects, seeking, finding and gaining the expertise of doctors and specialists who daily monitor the health of boxers. This is of paramount importance to the wellbeing of a contact sport.
Strengthening a benefits system for former boxers but always champions, who have fallen upon hard times, and extending this to those in dire need, due to the ravages of the Pandemic. Holding and hosting online press conferences, talks and get togethers to maintain the unity of Boxing World, during the most difficult of times. The WBC also pioneered the pandemic health and safety protocols to enable boxers to safely climb back into the ring, to pursue their livelihoods.
Seeking and gaining a US Presidential Pardon for Jack Johnson, for there is never a time limit involving righting a wrong, especially when that injustice has come about and festered through odious racial prejudice.
Leading his loyal WBC Team by example, Mauricio has achieved all of this and so much more in seven years.
Everyone who knows the Sulaiman family and the World Boxing Council, understands just how proud Mauricio`s father Don Jose would be of his outstanding achievements. Much has been accomplished yet much more has yet to be encountered.
