Midlands boxers shine at England Boxing National Youth Championships
The Midlands Counties region enjoyed a weekend to remember at the England Boxing National Youth Championships 2022, as they collected 10 of the 35 titles on offer.
Leading the way were Hall Green – the club of England’s only ever World Amateur champion, Frankie Gavin – for whom Derelle McKenzie and Joshua Rose came up trumps, and Stoke-on-Trent’s Impact, who also had two winners through Sophie Shore and Lewis Lawton.
But there were plenty of other victors from around the West Midlands, including Dan Kerrigan (Box Smart Elite), Frances Coope (Kingstanding 2nd City), Amaan Ghulam (Warley), Lia Crowe (Queensberry), Dempsey McManus (Wodensborough) and Madison Adkins (Bodyshots Redditch).
Both the North West and Tyne, Tees and Wear boasted five champions each, with the former boosted by three triumphs for Blackpool club Sharpstyle – in the shape of Thomas Varey, Levi Barnes and Nelson Birchall – to make them the competition’s most successful club.
Others in North West to finish as number one were Emily Whitworth (The People’s Gym) and Abdul Rahman Burton (Longsight).
Tyne, Tees and Wear’s cause for celebration was shared around, with Dionne Mannion (Marden), Shannon Rochester (New Welfare), Brannon Hudson (Forest Hall), Joe Hodgkinson (Olympian) and Harley Carberry (Billingham) all going home happy.
Elsewhere, London secured four titles and East Midlands three, while there were two each for Yorkshire, Southern Counties, Eastern Counties and Merseyside and Cheshire.
The spread of success around the country was emphasized by the fact that boxers from 31 different clubs won titles.
“It was great to kick off the 2022 competitions calendar with such a fantastic three days in Barnsley for the England Boxing National Youth Championships 2021 – there really were some terrific bouts,” said England Boxing’s Interim Chief Executive Officer, Charlie Ford.
“The large crowd were treated to an excellent standard of boxing, coaching and officiating throughout the weekend, and we will look forward to seeing some of the boxers compete for England on the international stage at the upcoming Youth Europeans.
“I would like to thank all of the staff, security team and volunteers that made the event happen. In particular, I would like to thank the referees and judges who give up their time to give enable us to crown a new set of national champions.”
