Mzimasi “Mzi” Mnguni & Carlos Menem R.I.P
Tribute to Mzimasi Mnguni Who Put South African Boxing on the Global Map
The brilliant South African Promoter Mzimasi Mnguni, who helped develop and flourish the careers of ten South Africans who went on to become world champions, has died in East London after a long illness, aged seventy two.
“Mzi” who was a brilliant businessmen, took over, coordinated and boosted the Modern Boxing Club in Mdantsane, re-naming it the Eyethu Boxing Club. Banning smoking and drinking among boxers his ethos was: “Every Boxer is a learner. You cannot be an uneducated boxer.”
He admired and followed the words or the Great Nelson Mandela who once said: “Sport has the power to change the World. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language that they understand.”
The breakthrough was his management and promotional Agreement with Rodney Berman. Together, united, combined and friends, they worked to enhance South African Boxing, striving with all their might, to place it on to the World scene, with great champions including: Welcome Ncita, Vuyani Bungu and Masibuela “Hawk” Makepula. Confined to a wheel chair since 2012, the great man fought on, never giving up!
Hawk who became a WBC International super Flyweight Champion said: “Mzi opened the doors for us, and we thank God for that. We consider him the Father of South African Boxing. Always, he was a brilliant businessman, taking nothing for granted, and as such he taught me to stand my ground and stand firm. How we will miss him! We are so glad and grateful he came along.”
The WBC family Mourns the Passing of Carlos Menem
The family of the World Boxing Council and its President, Mauricio Sulaimán, are mourning the death of Carlos Menem, former president of Argentina.
Mr. Menem inaugurated, together with Don José Sulaiman, the WBC Convention in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1996.
We send Menem family our deepest condolences at this so difficult and sad time.
May he rest in Eternal Peace.
