New WBC Israel Representative Dmitriy Salita Has Ambitious Plans
Former boxer and now promoter Dmitriy Salita, has been appointed by the World Boxing Council to develop boxing in Israel.
Dmitriy is the ideal person for the job. He was a top professional boxer, winning the North American Boxing Federation super lightweight title. He had 38 fights, 35 wins including 18 KO`S, one draw and two losses. He now runs very successful Salita Promotions. Some of its stars include: Claressa Shields, Otto Wallin, Shohjahon Ergashev, Christina Hammer, Apti Davtaev and Umar Salamov.
The WBC asked Dmitriy about his plans and strategies for this new and fascinating challenge.
What can you achieve in Israel, as the Special Representative of the World Boxing Council?
The goal is to strengthen a world class boxing program that would include a solid amateur sphere, consistent professional boxing events of various levels. With so many new initiatives happening in the region the time to do it is now.
Does it help, that you`ve been a boxer and now you are a promoter?
Definitely! I grew up in Starrett City Boxing Club which was one of the most successful boxing gyms in the country producing, National Champions , Olympians and professional world champions. As a pro I was signed to some of the biggest professional promoters in the sport and got a chance to compete at a high level. My fighting days are not that far removed. I love the sport of boxing both inside and outside the ring. Having this unique perspective of boxing on all levels is what I believe gives me the understanding of the multi level culture that needs to be established in Israel
Does boxing already have a foothold and a basis in Israel?
Yes, there is a boxing culture and some good amateurs and pros! We are definitely not starting from scratch. There is lots of potential in the current amateur and professional crop of fighters.
What do you think the potential of amateur and professional female and male boxing is in Israel?
For amateur boxing to win gold medals at international tournaments for both men and women. As pros to be a world champions. I feel that the potential talents are there!
What do your plans involve?
I would like to stage an event in Israel in the near future. With Covid this is challenging but it’s something we are working on. A world class boxing event will get people excited. We are working on implementing the necessary steps to foundationally help boxing in Israel on amateur and professional level.
How important is it for the youngsters to have a role model like you, to look up to for inspiration?
Thank you for the compliment! I am honored and blessed to be involved in the sport I love. I believe in hard work and faith in the All Mighty. I feel fortunate to be involved with this project.
If you find someone with exceptional talent, would it be best to help them develop in Israel, or take them to the United States, or incorporate both elements?
If we are talking about someone who is ready to turn pro and progress to an elite level , we need to develop sustainable boxing culture in Israel with world class training , sparring and consistent events. But in an ideal environment boxers would be developed in both places with television network support in Israel to properly develop the sport and its potential starts
If everything progresses well, how long before the first Israeli professional World Champion?
I don’t have enough knowledge of the lay of the land to make an educated valid prediction. ASAP
What is the motivation for you Dmitriy concerning this unique project
It’s motivating for several reasons I am honored to help develop the sweet science in Israel. It can have many benefits for the sports community and casual sports fans. Hall of fame promoters like Don King and Bob Arum invented new ideas and brought the sport to new people and places. As a fighter I used to watch videos of great fighters and pick up on the unique qualities they had. Now as a promoter I try to learn from the ones that left an imprint on the sport in their unique way.
