On This Day: Juan Zurita Becomes The First Mexican World Champion
March 8th, 1944
Juan Zurita became the first Mexican World Champion in boxing history, conquering the lightweight championship, defeating Sammy Angott by unanimous decision. The fight took place at the baseball park Gilmore Field in Los Angeles, California. The Referee was the former world champion, Mushy Callahan. The Judges were Charley Randolph and Billy Kershner.
