On This Day: Roy Jones vs. David Telesco – January 15th, 2000
January 15th , 2000 – Roy Jones from the US, who was champion in four different categories, defended his WBC light heavyweight championship after defeating his compatriot David Telesco, by UD. The fight was at the Radio City Music Hall in New York. The Referee was Arthur Mercante and the judges were Melvina Lathan, Luis Rivera and Sid Rubinstein.
The bout was easily being handled by Jones Jr. throughout the fight, outclassing his overmatched opponent. Jones was celebrating his 31st birthday and in the 12th round, as the clock struck midnight, he landed bombing right hands to the head of Telesco to the crowds pleasure but failed to finish the fight before the end of the 12 rounds. Telesco had taunted Jones Jr. prior to the fight that he would not be able to stop him.
Jones said he didn’t score a knockout “because I fractured my left wrist in a motorcycle accident 3 1/2 weeks ago. Everybody said I should cancel the fight but I said, `I can’t. I’ve got a big date in New York.′ If I had both hands, I would have knocked him out, but I only had one hand.″
At the end of the fight, Jones was presented a birthday cake in the ring.
