On This Day: Tony Canzoneri Drew With Bud Taylor 1927
March 26th, 1927
Great Tony Canzoneri, who won three world titles (featherweight, lightweight and welterweight Jr, as it was called before being termed super lightweight), failed on his first attempt to get a crown, as he drew in 10 rounds with Charles “Bud” Taylor.
The vacant bantamweight title was contested at the Chicago Coliseum. The Referee was Joe Choynski, and the battle was promoted by Jim Mullen. In the rematch bout only three months later, Taylor become Champion, winning by unanimous decision at Wrigley Field.
