Pat McCormack says he won’t allow comparisons with Canelo Alvarez to distract him from producing an ‘explosive’ performance live on terrestrial TV this weekend.
Probellum President Richard Schaefer believes Olympic silver medalist McCormack can follow in the footsteps of the great Canelo and become a multi-weight world champion.
McCormack, 27, took just 98 seconds to win on his debut in March and will aims to make another statement against Dimitri Trenel on Saturday night, live on Channel 5.
“Richard has put me up there and they are big shoes to fill,” McCormack told Probellum.com
“But all I can do is keep training hard and trying to get better. But I know that the better the competition, the better I will be.
“People can expect an explosive performance from me on Saturday, with lots of skill and me putting into practice everything I have worked on in the gym, to a national audience. I can’t wait.”
His coach, Ben Davison, has also revealed that two-weight world champion Billy Joe Saunders labelled McCormack as he “most talented” fighter he has ever seen but the former amateur stand-out is refusing to lose sight of the job at hand.
Ahead of McCormack’s pro debut, at Probellum Throwdown, Davison said he had been “shocked” with how quickly his new charge was adapting to the pros.
Davison has continued to be bowled over by the former Great Britain amateur – but he’s not the only one.
“The progress Pat has made since he has turned professional has been phenomenal,” he told Probellum.com.
“Other fighters who have been in the gym, like Billy Joe Saunders, have labelled Pat the most talented fighter they have ever seen.
“As long as he stays committed to the boxing, has his mind on the right things and dedicates himself to it, then he can reach the pinnacle of the sport.”
