Perry Howe: I’m not going there to make up the numbers
Dec Spelman vs. Perry Howe
Lady Eastwood Arena, Newark, England – 5 March 2022
Sheffield’s Perry Howe gets a big chance to gate-crash the British rankings on Saturday March 5 when he headlines against Scunthorpe’s Dec Spelman, LIVE on Fightzone.
The pair will meet at Newark’s Lady Eastwood Arena on a Carl Greaves Promotions card, with Howe stepping into the away corner as a late replacement opponent.
Despite losing just one of six bouts, the Fight Academy man is a clear underdog in the contest against the far more experienced Spelman. The former English light heavyweight champion has been in with top quality opposition like Anthony Yarde and Lyndon Arthur, and won 16 of 21, with eight KOs.
Although the odds are stacked against him, former military man Perry is up for the battle. Naturally the bigger man and with Spelman campaigning at cruiserweight for the first time, ‘The Promise’ says he is looking forward to testing himself against quality opposition and relishing the chance to perform on the big stage.
“We’ve taken this fight last-minute, but I want to step up my game anyway and on Fightzone is a great opportunity to do that,” said Perry. “I fought recently and have been ticking over since because I was supposed to have a six-rounder in early April. So, I’ve been straight back into the gym and I felt like dipping my toes in the deep end but have decided to jump straight in!
“Dec’s going to be stepping up to cruiserweight, so I’ll be interested to see how he handles that. He’s piled the bulk on and has prepared well for it, but we’ll see how he gets on carrying that extra couple of stone.
“I’ll perform better against better opposition [Spelman], we haven’t seen the best of me yet. The opponents I’ve had have made me look messy and it’ll be nice to get some quality boxing in against someone who’ll hopefully want to trade with me.
“I’m looking forward to a packed house. Whether there’s 10 people in the crowd or ten thousand, I’ve got a job to do and I won’t let it distract me or let the occasion get the better of me. It’ll be lovely to beat him, a proper underdog story and I’m not going there to make the numbers up – I’m going there to win.”
