Noel Echevarria vs. Jerome Conquest

Continuing the build-up to the Echevarria vs. Conquest UBO World Lightweight title fight in Gadsden, Alabama on October 16, its time to hear from the champion, Noel Echevarria.

Yesterday we got five answers from challenger Jerome Conquest. This is part two of Q & A Face-Off: Echevarria vs. Conquest.

Q: One fighter from Puerto Rico, the other from Philadelphia. Two iconic boxing locales. Who is your favourite Puerto Rican and Philadelphia fighter of all time?

A: My favourite fighter will have to be me. I never looked up to anybody. I’ve always had the heart and drive to be my own favourite, believing that I could be better.

Whether or not this is true, I have had to rely on my own path through the valley of the shadow of death, and coming out a better man and fighter. Living my story makes me my favourite fighter.

Q: If you could chose any profession/sport not boxing?

A: I really enjoy and am pretty good at basketball. I played when I was a boy, MVP as a shooting guard, but when I started doing bad in school and couldn’t play, I lost the drive to reach a scholarship. I fell in love with boxing, because I didn’t need a scholarship to reach the top.

Q: Favourite and least favourite part of training?

A: Favourite part is the ice baths after training. The feeling I get after a nice ice bath is amazing!

Least favourite part is around the 5th week of camp. The hurting nights where you can barely sleep, tossing and turning.

Q: Random and unprofessional question: Tyson Fury in the Titanic movie, or Manny Pacquiao in the Cats musical?

A: I’m gonna go with Fury in Titanic! That would be hilarious, but I believe he´d play a good role. But Pacquiao in Cats would be hilarious too.

Q: First thing you do the day after the fight, win or lose?

A: I wake up and thank God for such an amazing opportunity! Win or lose, I know my opponent and I have put in some serious work, and the best man will win.

I give thanks and pray blessings to the people who have helped me. I had to go through some tough competitors to become world champion, and now I get to prove it wasn’t a fluke.

I look at my belt every day while I train, reminding myself that I’ve worked so hard and am one of the very few in my community to become WORLD CHAMPION!
