RING TELMEX-TELCEL Fighters Will Clash This Weekend

World Boxing Council super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt, will defend his crown for the seventh time, against undefeated former world champion and two-time Olympian Oscar Valdez this Saturday night in Las Vegas, and it`s a contest between two RING TELMEX-TELCEL prospects who developed into superstars.

It was on June 22, 2008 when the RING TELMEX-TELCEL program was launched, via the initiative of  TELMEX FOUNDATION,  as Mr Carlos Slim met with his dear friend , the Lifetime President of the World Boxing Council, Don José Sulaimán and together designed a program intended to support young boxers with a monthly scholarship in order to have them dedicate exclusively to boxing and not have to worry about basic expenses which usually made them have to take on 2 or jobs in addition to their training regime.

That same year, Carlos Slim was honored as the 2008 Man of the Year by the WBC, in addition to recognizing the leadership of Arturo Elías Ayub and that of Dr. Rogelio Herrera Echauri, director of RING TELMEX-TELCEL.

The aim of RING TELMEX-TELCEL Program is that the boxers not only receive financial support, but also medical, dental, physical and emotional reinforcement.

Helped, encouraged and inspired, young boxers who back then were unpolished diamonds went on to show their gleaming facets.  Shining examples are Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, world champions, as well as Óscar Valdez, Miguel Berchelt, Francisco “Bandido” Vargas, Carlos “Príncipe” Cuadras, Juan Francisco Estrada, Adrián “Confesor” Hernández. The potential of talent nurtured and then gloriously realized.

To date, the RING TELMEX-TELCEL program has had 19 world champions. The galaxy includes:  Anabel Ortíz, Adrián Hernández, Carlos Cuadras, Francisco Vargas, Gilberto Ramírez, Guadalupe Martinez, Ibeth Zamora, Jaime Munguia, Juan Francisco Estrada, Julio Ceja, Lourdes Juárez , Mariana Juárez, Miguel Berchelt, Óscar Valdez, Pedro Guevara, Rey Vargas, Saúl Alvarez, Yesenia Gomez y Zulina Muñoz. What a return on this revolutionary investment!

RING TELMEX-TELCEL has supported 76 fighters, several of them have become world champions and some of them are top prospects such as Eduardo “Rocky” Hernández, Oscar Duarte, David “General” Cuéllar, Joselito Velázquez, Juan Pablo “Pivi” Romero, Misael Rodríguez, and Omar “Pollo” Aguilar. The new chapter in an ongoing saga.

Berchelt vs Valdez is a fight between team members which promises to produce everlasting memories as they fight for respect, hope and glory.
