World Boxing Council flyweight champion Marlen Esparza closed 2021 brilliantly by defeating tough Mexican challenger Anabel Ortiz on Saturday night at the AT&T Center in Texas, with the first defence of her WBC belt.

Esparza took advantage of her size although she also used her superior speed and skills to defeat Ortiz comfortably.

The champion proved dominant and was victorious on all three scorecards with scores of 100-88, 99-90 and 95-94.

Esparza, 32, a 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, improved her record to 11-1. In June of this year, she defeated Ibeth Zamora to be crowned WBC Monarch and recently, she was awarded with the WBC Best Fight of the Year recognition for her tremendous performance in that battle.

Marlen Esparza vs. Anabel Ortiz was the last title fight of the World Boxing Council in 2021.

Rising super featherweight contender Lamont Roach Jr. (22-1-1, 9 KOs) took on former world champion Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado (32-11, 21 KOs) in a 10-round fight for the vacant NABA Super Featherweight championship. The fight was equally match as both fighters came forward and took turns exchanging blows. There were a few moments where Roach, Jr. landed heavy blows that rocked Alvarado; but the veteran warrior was strong and he eagerly returned. The fight went to the score cards with 98-92, 100-90, and 98-92 all in favor of Roach, Jr.

“I feel good about this victory. I just beat a man who was a world champion two fights ago,” said Roach, Jr.  “This is the type of victory that I need to show that I am ready for a world title fight. Rene Alvarado is a warrior, a tough guy who I couldn’t knock down, but I feel we did our job today. I want the champion next, Roger Gutierrez.”

“I don’t know what to do anymore. The job we did today was excellent,” said Alvarado. “On my count I believe the fight was mine. When I heard unanimous decision, I knew that was right, but when they said Roach, Jr.’s name I couldn’t believe it. I know I won the fight.”

2012 U.S. Olympic Bronze medal winner and current WBC Flyweight World Champion Marlen Esparza (11-1, 1 KOs) defended her world title, for the first time, in her home state against the seasoned former two-time world champion, Anabel “Avispa” Ortiz (31-5, 4 KOs) of Mexico City, Mexico. ‘Avispa’ proved to be a difficult fight for Esparza, as the 13-time world title defender brought with her experience and technical ability. Esparza, however, was not intimidated, as she went after Ortiz and did not back down after Ortiz’ attacks.

After an exciting fight, between to veteran warriors, the score cards ruled in favor of Esparza with scores of 100-88, 95-94, 99-90 to win the fight via unanimous decision. “My performance was good considering I just came back after contracting Covid-19,” said Esparza.

“I wanted to see what it would feel like to come back and I can say that there is some fatigue. We knew she was a counter puncher so we were prepared for it, but I can feel a little of the fatigue. Now that is all over and I know what it feels to come back, I want all the belts. I want Naoko Fujioka from Japan and just unify this division.” “I think I delivered a great fight, simply the referee did not favor me,” said Ortiz.

“He counted two slips that were obviously not knockdowns, she pushed me. I am very unhappy because they put someone in the ring who does not know how to do his job, especially when this is a world title fight. It is a disservice to the sport. They took the victory away from me.”

Leading the fight card on the Golden Boy Fight Night on Facebook Watch, two undefeated fighters, Victor Morales (15-0-1, 8KOs), of Vancouver, WA and Rudy Garcia (12-0-1, 2 KOs) of Los Angeles, CA, both put their undefeated records on the line in an exciting 10-round featherweight fight for the vacant WBC International Featherweight Title. Both fighters exchanged equally, both landing heavy shots to the face and body. Neither fighter backed off, both moved forward trying to tear down their opponent. The crowd loved their style as they cheered on both fighters and gave them a standing ovation at the conclusion of the 10th round. Ultimately, the judges ruled the fight a draw, with scores of 96-94, 93-97, 95-95.

“I am really upset with the decision, because I feel like I won that fight,” said Garcia.

“Morales is a good fighter, I know him from the amateur world, but I think that I pulled off the victory in the end. I really want the re-match to prove that I won this fight.”  “I feel like I won the fight. I feel like I broke him down from the very beginning,” said Morales. “Yes, we got hit. I got things to work on, but I still feel like I won this fight. Let’s do the re-match next, let’s run it back and prove who is the best.”

Luis Hernandez (21-2, 19 KOs) of Chihuahua, Mexico, took on Ruslan Madiyev (14-2, 5 KOs) of Indio, CA in a scheduled 10-round super lightweight bout. The fight went the distance as both fighters went back and forth with Madiyev dictating the pace of the fight. Madiyev, was relentless in his pursuit of Hernandez, and he delivered powerful blows that shook Hernandez. But Hernandez wouldn’t go down, he showed a lot of heart trying to keep Madiyev at bay. The score cards did not lie, awarding Madiyev the victory by unanimous decision with scores of 91-99, 92-98, 91-98. “I had seen past fight footage of Hernandez and I noticed that he kept his left hand down,” said Madiyev.

“So I made sure to prepare and attack with that right hook, and I kept catching him. I am very proud of my team for the amazing preparation, and I can’t wait to come back in the ring and fight for a title soon.”

Rising welterweight star Raul “Cugar” Curiel (11-0, 9 KOs) of Tamaulipas, Mexico, was scheduled for a 10-round fight for the NABF Welterweight Title against San Antonio’s Kendo Castaneda (17-5, 8 KOs). Curiel, who has been training with Hall of Fame trainer, Freddy Roach, really demonstrated intelligence in the ring as he landed heavy shots on Castaneda knocking him down in the third round. Castaneda, trained by San Antonio’s boxing star Jesse James Leija, quickly recovered and aggressively went after Curiel. The crowd erupted in a cheering war come cheering “Cougar” others Kendo, as both fighters traded shots. However, Curiel delivered a devastating blow to Castañeda in the seventh round winning the fight by knockout.

“I am very happy to be in Texas and to make my first title defense in front of my family. Castaneda was a strong opponent, but I am glad we were able to show off all our hard work and get a victory. This was one of my best performances and I am so happy to be able to share it with everyone,” said Curiel.

The second fight of the night featured Zurdo Promotions’ heavy-handed prospect, John “Scrappy” Ramirez (8-0, 7 KOs) of Los Angeles taking on Miguel Rebullosa (4-13, 5 KOs) of Coahuila de Zaragosa, Mexico in a 4-round bantamweight fight. ‘Scrappy’ displayed his skill level in the ring as he knocked down Rebullosa three times in the second round winning the fight by TKO at the 2:22 mark of the round.

Opening up the event at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, “Slick” Nick Sullivan (5-0, 1 KO) of Norfolk, VA, took on Erick Benitez (2-2, 1 KO) of Guadalajara, Mexico, in a 4-round lightweight event. The fight went the distance as both prospects often found themselves entangled as they tried to find their shots. The score cards read 39-37 from all three judges ruling in favor of Sullivan, winning the fight by unanimous decision.

Former world champion and light heavyweight Mexican superstar, Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (42-0, 28 KOs) of Mazatlán, Mexico, and his opponent, Cuba’s Yunieski “The Monster” Gonzalez (21-3, 17 KOs), hosted their final press conference today ahead of their 12-round clash on Saturday, December 18 live on DAZN. The fighters are scheduled to fight for the WBA Light Heavyweight Title eliminator at AT&T Center in San Antonio, TX.

Three-time world champion Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada (21-0, 8 KOs) was also in attendance along with her opponent, the undefeated Maria “La Imparable” Santizo (9-0, 5 KOs) of Guatemala City, Gua. They are set to face off for Estrada’s WBA Minimumweight World title in a 10-round fight. Lamont Roach, Jr. (21-1-1, 9 KOs) and former world champion Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado (32-10, 21 KOs) was also on-site to talk about their upcoming career-defining 10-round fight for the vacant NABA Super Featherweight championship. 2012 U.S. Olympic Bronze Medal winner and current WBC Flyweight World Champion Marlen Esparza (10-1, 1 KOs) and her opponent, the long-reigning, former two-time world champion, Anabel “Avispa” Ortiz (31-4, 4 KOs) of Mexico City, Mexico were also on hand to discuss their upcoming battle for Esparza’s WBC Flyweight World Championship.

Prospects featured on the Golden Boy Fight Night on Facebook Watch portion of the fight card were also on-site to discuss their upcoming bouts. Fighters in attendance included Luis Hernandez (21-1, 19 KOs), who will face off against Ruslan Madiyev (13-2, 5 KOs) in a 10-round super lightweight bout; and Victor Morales (15-0, 8KOs) will fight Rudy Garcia (12-0, 2 KOs) in an all-out 8-round featherweight clash as both prospects put their undefeated records on the line.

Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez

“Gonzalez is a good challenge for me. This is an eliminator fight. I have been working so hard to get to the world title, and I am ready to go through Yunieski Gonzalez to get there.

“I want the people to know me, and I enjoy, and want to be with the people. I was a little insecure before, but not anymore.

“Boxing is what I want to do for life. Even if I am not in the ring, I want to be in boxing as a promoter. I want to thank Golden Boy Promotions and the whole team for everything they have done for me.

“Before winning the title fights at 168lbs, I felt empty inside. During the shutdown from coronavirus, I started meditation, yoga and found myself. I was in a dark place, and I needed to change that to be the best in boxing. It just took time for me to learn to live with myself.”

Yunieski Gonzalez

“I was surprised Zurdo wanted to fight me. I am happy and grateful for the opportunity as I know Zurdo Ramirez and what a fight with him can offer me.

“Everything is good; we have put in a lot of hard work. I want to thank my team and all the guys in South Florida who helped me with sparring. Everything has been going well, and I want to thank God for this opportunity.”

Seniesa ‘Superbad’ Estrada

“I feel most comfortable at this division. It’s a natural weight class for me. I have faced two great world champions and defeated them both. This has given me confidence in my skills and has prepared me mentally.

“I want to thank Golden Boy Promotions for giving me the platform to represent women’s boxing. We are now co-main, main events, and I want to keep representing women’s boxing as much as I can.”

Maria Santizo

Feared, former world champion, and light heavyweight sensation Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (42-0, 28 KOs) of Mazatlán, Mexico, will welcome the holiday season by taking on Cuba’s Yunieski “The Monster” Gonzalez (21-3, 17 KOs) for the WBA Light Heavyweight Title eliminator on Saturday, December 18 from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, TX. The winner of the title eliminator will secure a mandatory challenge to the WBA Light Heavyweight World Championship, a highly desired position for fighters that are often avoided in the highly protected light heavyweight division. The 12-round main event will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN worldwide.

A highly feared and avoided fighter, Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez is willing to put his undefeated record on the line to prove he is the best in the light heavyweight division, and the WBA Light Heavyweight title eliminator will allow him to get closer to his goal. After a spectacular knockout victory over Cuba’s Sullivan Barrera in July 2021, ‘Zurdo’ is ready to face an equally challenging fighter in Miami’s Yunieski Gonzalez. He is determined to retain his undefeated status, reach the highly coveted 50-0 milestone, and continue his knockout streak, which he has held since 2019. A former WBO Super Middleweight World Champion, who defended his title successfully five times, ‘Zurdo’ is ready for the world stage one more time in 2021, closing off the year with a bang.

Fighting out of Miami, Florida, but originally from Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Yunieski “The Monster” Gonzalez has had a successful career in the light heavyweight division. He has stayed busy in 2020 and 2021, facing and defeating Guillermo Romero, Alex Theran, and Tommy Karpency by consecutive knockout victories. The heavy-handed fighter has been seeking an elusive world title fight and will get closer to his goal if he can defeat Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez for the WBA Light Heavyweight World Title eliminator on December 18.

In a vibrant performance, the young American star born in East Los Angeles, Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada became the new World Boxing Association 105 lbs. champion after dethroning the Mexican Anabel “Avispa” Ortiz by unanimous decision in ten rounds. The fight was the co-feature of a great event at the Dickies Arena, Fort Worth, Texas, United States.

Avispa planned to take the fight to the terrain in which she knew how to conquer her fights; with two punches and outs, keeping the distance and getting little in the short distance. However, such approach was not effective against the speed of a complicated boxer like Estrada. Anabel Ortiz and Seniesa Estrada came face to face in the last press conference before their fight this Saturday for the World Boxing Association (WBA) minimum title, which will take place in Texas at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

Ortiz and Estrada is expected look to be a great fight between two top-level fighters who are both eager to be at the top of the 105-pound class. In addition, they both wish women’s boxing to continue to grow and take more space on the big card.

“I feel happy because I have been working hard. It’s a dream to fight in the United States and for them to know more about Mexican boxing,” said “Avispa” Ortiz.

Ortiz said to be read to defend her title once more.: “The fans are going to enjoy a great fight. I am preparing myself as a challenger to win. I’m coming to defend and take what is mine, which is a victory.

Estrada talked about the effort of the boxers as well as the fruits they have harvested: “I always dreamed of being here, we have been through so much. It wasn’t easy to get to where we are. As Anabel said, it’s going to be a great fight. She comes with experience, but I’ve been fighting since I was 8 years old and I have more than 100 amateur fights and now it’s my time”.

A woman who can generate the same effect with different gestures: a compelling smile and a shrewd look. In seconds, in either way, she can cut the breath of anyone who stands in front of her.

Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada said in 2020, when she achieved the fastest knockout in the women’s boxing history, seven seconds, that she was determined to win all the belts in different categories.

She currently holds the World Boxing Association Interim Flyweight belt and this Saturday she will seek the 105-pound belt against Mexican Anabel Ortiz in Texas.

Her fascination for boxing began at a very young age when she watched fights on TV with her father Joe Estrada, who would later take her to a gym. At the age of eight, she decided she was going to be a boxer as she made the youngnents cry when she climbed into the ring with her headgear and big gloves that turned her little hands into hammers.

Seniesa grew up on East Los Angeles streets. There where gangs vices that made her parents not the best examples for the young girl who channelled her experiences into something positive, inspiring her family to change their lives: “If it wasn’t for boxing I don’t know where I would be, probably on drugs”, said Joe, who passed on his love for boxing to his daughter and accompanies her closely in every stage of her life.

Super Bad always remembers with pride her Mexican roots and feels that this is also part of who she is as a boxer in the present. She adds her admiration for Roy Jones Jr: “I love Roy Jones Jr.’s speed, technique, defense and intelligence in the ring. He is talented in many ways and I have always been inspired to fight like him,” said the East LA-born boxer in 2020, who, after her battle with Olympic medalist Marlen Esparza, assured that she will be consecrated in the lower weight categories.

The Mexican Female Boxer With The Most Successful Defenses

In her first approach to boxing, Avispa’s sting was only looking for a way to express an enormous pain within: that was how the girls at school or in the neighbourhood felt the fists of the then little girl, the same one who would later decide to join a gym in order to sharpen her aim with the desire to avenge the bruises that her mother carried.

Anabel “Avispa” Ortiz recounts in several interviews how the misfortune of suffering family violence at home led her to take her first steps between the ropes until she became the World Boxing Association Minimumweight Champion in 2013 when she defeated the emblematic Estuko Tada in Japan for the first time.

On a bike ride, Anabel saw in the basement of a church how some people were practicing boxing and that’s when she decided to start with the formal practice of the discipline. Motivated for many years by the desire to give her father the same punches he gave her mother, she began a sporting path that she never imagined would take her so far. Within the amateur field she completed a total of 200 fights having won the national amateur tournament at the Olympic Committee of Mexico among other championships.

Being a teenager, Anabel gave birth to her first daughter and took a break in her boxing career, which she later resumed until she was 19 years old, when she made her professional debut in the Mexican city of Toluca on January 12th, 2007.

Due to her extensive amateur career, the Tepic-born boxer soon had the opportunity to fight for a belt in her third professional fight: she won the vacant Mexican Light Flyweight title with a unanimous decision over fellow countrywoman Delia Lopez. In her seventh fight in 2009, she defeated Carina Moreno and became WBC Minimumweight World Champion, title she held until 2011, when she travelled to Japan for the second time, this time losing to Naoko Fujioka.

On May 24th, 2012, she flew to Argentina to fight for the WBA and WBO Light Flyweight Championships, which were in the hands of the Super Champion of the division, Yesica Bopp. Her three defeats were against high level fighters, which gave her a lot of experience, until 2013 came and she became the owner of the 105 lbs. WBA absolute championship.

Anabel Ortiz became an icon as the first Mexican to make so many world championship defenses. In addition to her achievement, her history has been the impetus for her to come to the top: Anabel had a second daughter when she got married after becoming a champion and, in that union, life always putting her to the test, she had to go through the same situation she wanted to get her mother out of. Under the mandate of “one marries for life”, Anabel suffered the violence of her husband until, thanks to the support of her team at the gym, she was able to take the reins to cut the karma by taking charge of her two daughters and putting boxing first.

This March 20th in Texas, Ortiz will be facing a great challenge against Seniesa Estrada in a fight that surely won’t let you blink.

Anabel Ortiz will make the 13th defense of her World Boxing Association (WBA) Minimumweight Championship this Saturday when she steps into the ring of the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, to face the talented Seniesa Estrada, one of the most interesting fighters in boxing today and who is determined to win the belt.

The bout will be the co-feature of the event organized by Golden Boy Promotions featuring Vergil Ortiz Jr. against Maurice Hooker.
