Azumah Nelson stopped Gabriel Ruelas to regain the WBC super featherweight title, the second of two bouts the boxers shared together (with Nelson winning both).

The Ghanaian, one of Africa’s greatest boxers, lost his title to Jesse James Leija in the second of their four fights.

Nelson won the title back after an 19-month layoff, handing Ruelas his third defeat in 44 fights.

Azumah Nelson vs. Juvenal Ordenes

September 6, 1985

Azumah Nelson, from Ghana, better known as the “Professor,” retained the WBC featherweight crown, defeating challenger Juvenal Ordenes, from Chile by TKO,  at 2 minutes 45 seconds of the fifth round. The bout was at the Tamiami Fairgrounds Auditorium in Miami, Florida. The Referee was Steve Crosson, while the  judges were Dick Cole, Arlen Bynum and Ismael Quinones.

Salvador Sánchez vs. Azumah Nelson

July 21st, 1982

The Great and unforgettable Salvador Sánchez retained his featherweight crown defeating fledgling fighter, but brilliant Champion in the making Azumah Nelson at Madison Square Garden, New York. It ended on the button at one minute and 49 seconds of the fifteenth round. The Referee was Tony Pérez. The Judges were Tony Castellano, Al Reid and Artie Aidala. Sadly, this was Sal’s final fight. He died aged just 24 in a car accident on the Toluca highway.

“Professor” Azumah Nelson, from Ghana, wrought ring vengeance on Jesse James Leija defeating him by TKO in round six. With this triumph he successfully defended the WBC super featherweight championship. The bout was at the  Boulder Station Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Referee was Richard Steele. The Judges were Angel Luis Guzman, Jerry Roth and Richard James Davies.
