Billy Joe Saunders insists that he will be back following his unification battle with Canelo Alvarez over the weekend.

Saunders had been boxing brilliantly in the mega-fight at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, before an eye injury led to his corner pulling him out of the fight after eight rounds.

While he may not have been victorious, Saunders has received a lot of praise for how he had been boxing in the rounds leading up to the conclusion, and he has released a short statement to break his silence.

Saunders said: “Thanks everyone for the messages. I have a broken eye socket and broken cheekbone in three places. I had my operation yesterday and all went well.

“You win some and lose some. I didn’t feel out of my league but got caught with a good shot and couldn’t see, and Ben got the corner to pull it. Thank you all who watched, I’ll be back, god bless you all.”

The world boxing star Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez did not disappoint on his promises and dispatched the Briton Billy Joe Saunders in eight rounds in the presence of 73,126 fans at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

For all the bravery and psychology shown by Saunders prior to the fight, a more close showdown was expected, but Canelo did not allow that and from the first round he came out attacking Saunders’ liver and face. The Briton tried to use his jab to keep the Mexican away without much success.

At the end of the fight, all the judges had the Mexican up, indicating that Saunders had only two options, going out and attacking or dying in the line, and indeed the last one happened, since he succumbed to the strong blows of the Mexican, especially an uppercut to the right cheekbone, which could have led to a possible fracture and was the reason for the end.

This victory earned Canelo the WBO Super Middleweight World Title, added to the WBC 168-pound and the WBA Super Middleweight Super Championship, which he already held.

After the victory and with his sights set on being the undisputed champion, the Mexican challenged American Caleb “Sweet Hands” Plant, who holds the IBF 168-pound crown.

In top level boxing, when the glittering prize is there almost within grasp, just one strategic tactical error is sufficient to slip up and for the prize to remain forever out of reach, which is what befell Billy Joe Saunders, who dipped down and walked straight into a pinpoint right uppercut which fracted his right eye socket.

This was the way in which Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez (56-1-2, 38 KO’s) knocked the fight out Billy Joe Saunders (30-1, 14 KO’s) after eight bruising rounds, handing him his first professional loss, in successfully and ruthlessly defending his cherished WBC belt, as well as the WBA super-middleweight titles, taking away Saunders` WBO strap, after administering a comprehensive beating at the Dallas Cowboys stadium in Arlington, Texas.

After Billy Joe had audaciously jived his way to the ring, and later, God Save the Queen was sung by an American lady. In breezed jaunty Canelo backed by the towering Pepe Aguilar, and a mariachi band in fine voice and full flow. It got the blood and the adrenalin boiling and the 73,000 crowd roaring. A magnificent Cinco de Mayo Fiesta which eclipsed everything else. Marvellously magnificent. To his credit, Saunders was neither overawed or fazed. He was soaking up the atmosphere and remembering every glorious moment, to tell the tale to his grandchildren.

The fight began with Canelo moving in to cut the distance to Saunders. As expected and foretold, Canelo landed a crunching left to the body, then another, a big right to the head of the Brit who was vainly searching for angles to land his fast right jab. Seeing is believing, but feeling the weight of Canelo`s punches, the power of which Saunders had never experienced in thirty previous fights, was quite another thing.

In the second, Canelo landed a heavy right to Saunders`s suntanned torso and more to Saunders’s face, driving him back. Saunders flicked out his right jab, but was backing away, as a solid left slammed into his chest.

In the third, Saunders was pawing with his right jab, trying to measure the distance to the shorter man, and dangerously lowering his hands, trying to temper speed against power, and then a big right to his head, visibly shook him. Saunders started milling on the retreat.

A smart three punch combination in the fourth from Saunders, momentarily checked the onslaught of Canelo, who then retaliated with a left to the body. Canelo then swing and missed
and Saunders briefly moved into attack mode, but then moved back, again with hands almost at hip level.

In the fifth Saunders was again pawing with jabs, until two rights and a right uppercut to the body jolted him. Saunders kept his cool, jabbing well and catching Canelo with a neat left hook. His confidence was growing, and then he was backed into the ropes and hurt with a right to the body.

In the sixth Saunders looked good boxing, landing punches and dodging Canelo’s attacks, but was absorbing punches and foolishly stuck out his tongue, being driven back with a hard right to the head. Although Saunders seemed to be keeping up with his rhythm and motivation in the seventh, Canelo regained control, cutting the ring and landing powerful punches. In that seventh, Saunders was moving around a lot, using his jab, but was getting punished to the body by Canelo, who was landing cleaner punches, especially a big right to the head.

Canelo upped the pace at the beginning of the eight. Saunders landed a sharp right to the head, but a simultaneous left from Canelo wobbled him. Saunders came in bending low and walked straight into the perfectly timed right uppercut which fractured his right eye socket. His eye immediately started to close with a greyish hue to it.

Sensing the severe damage he`d inflicted and knowing the end was nigh, Canelo raised his right arm aloft and then both arms in a victory salute, even though the fight was still ongoing.
A dejected Saunders walked back to his corner at the end of the round, sat down on the stool and shook his head dejectedly. And his coach Jimmy Tibbs indicated that his man couldn`t see from the impressed indentation and for safety`s sake it was all over.

Canelo came over briefly to sporting check on Saunders but then moved away. Still not much love lost between the two. Saunders` pre fight hype and needle had stung appreciably more than Saunders` punches. Before the eye watering peach of a punch, which sent Saunders to hospital, Canelo was winning on the three judges’ scorecard, with points of 78-74 (Feldman), 77-75 (Cheatham) and 78-74 (DeLuca).

The World Boxing Council presented Canelo with the Mestizo belt as a trophy, to commemorate May 5, after he pulled on a WBC black t shirt handed to him by President Mauricio Sulaiman.

After ten rounds at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, French boxer Souleymane Cissokho became the new WBA Intercontinental 154-pound Champion by defeating Kieron Conway by split decision in the undercard of the big unification fight between Canelo Álvarez and Billy Joe Saunders.

Cissokho remains undefeated after thirteen professional bouts and his knockout record remains at eight.

Despite surviving a knockdown at the start of round nine, Cissokho closed out in a big way in chapter ten.

The judges scored 96-93 and 95-94 in favor of Cissokho, who moved in the ring with greater intentions to get the victory. Conway left the way open for Cissokho to develop his work plan based on speed of movements and changes of pace.

The statistics previously revealed that Conway is not a natural puncher and that was taken advantage of by Cissokho. His boxing style is based in perseverance, in his ability to be frontal, and on more than one occasion he upset Conway.

Conway downgraded his record to 17 wins, 2 losses, and 4 knockouts.

Cuban world heavyweight ranked Frank Sánchez (18-0, 13 KOs) defeated Nagy Aguilera (21-11, 14 KOs) by technical decision in the sixth round to retain his WBC Continental Americas title in a special attraction of the Canelo vs. Saunders, this Saturday, at the stadium of the Dallas Cowboys, the AT&T, in Arlington (Dallas), Texas.

For the sixth round of a fight dominated by the Cuban, based on pressure, it was determined that Aguilera could not continue fighting, due to an accidental foul that Sánchez landed a right hand to the back of the head. All three judges scored the six-round bout with identical scorecards of 60-54.

Canelo vs. Billy Joe Alvarez Fight Weights

Billy Joe Saunders and Canelo Alvarez both successfully made weight as they prepare to do battle in tomorrow’s huge super-middleweight unification.

The massive event takes place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday and will be broadcast live on DAZN, as unbeaten WBO super-middleweight champion Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs) looks to cement his legacy by facing WBC and WBA champion Canelo (55-1-2, 37 KOs).

The weigh-in took place on Friday, with Saunders coming in at a ripped and ready 167.8lbs, and Canelo was almost identical at 167.4lbs.

Saunders said: “I have the belief, the spirit and the winning mentality. I don’t come here to lie down, I come here to win. Canelo hasn’t fought someone with as much determination as me. I’ll take all of these titles and take them by storm.

“I’m 30-0 and unbeaten. He has to do something differently to beat me. The key to this fight is I’ve got to be on my A-game and bring my best to the table, as long as I bring my brain, I’ve got it. The fans will push me to win. They’ll be cheering for Canelo, but on the way out they’ll cheer for me.”

Elsewhere on the card, Kieron Conway (16-1-1, 3 KOs) also returns, as he defends his WBA Intercontinental super-welterweight title against Souleymane Cissokho (12-0, 8 KOs).

Conway looked in tremendous shape as he weighed in at bang on 154lbs for his title defence, while Cissokho was slightly lighter at 153.6lbs.

Conway said: “I’m here to win. I will put on a good show and I’m here to really bring the heat. I don’t want easy fights like the rest of the division, I want fights that get people interested and I will show what I’m about.

“I’m fit, ready and stronger than ever. Everything is in place and it’s going to really show what I’m all about. I’m really excited, there are good fans and we’re fighting in a good arena, so let’s go.”

Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders are set to smash the record for the biggest indoor attendance for a boxing event in America as they prepare to meet in a Super-Middleweight unification battle at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday May 8, live worldwide on DAZN and distributed by TV Azteca in Mexico and Latin America.

Alvarez and Saunders already broke the pre-sale records for their clash on Saturday night and with over 65,000 tickets now sold with limited remaining, their tasty battle is set to overtake the rematch between Muhammad Ali and Leon Spinks at the Superdome in New Orleans in 1978 that drew 63,352 fans.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has been the driving force behind some of the biggest crowds in British boxing history, starting with Carl Froch and George Groves at Wembley Stadium in London, and then Heavyweight ruler Anthony Joshua OBE filling the same stadium against Wladimir Klitschko and Alexander Povetkin and also the Principality Stadium in Cardiff against Joseph Parker and Carlos Takam – and Hearn is thrilled to be putting boxing under the best of spotlights on Cinco de Mayo weekend.

“It’s one of the biggest events I’ve ever been involved in and this morning, we officially broke the record for the biggest indoor crowd in American boxing history,” said Hearn.

“We will have 70,000 people in the AT&T Stadium on Saturday night – I am absolutely buzzing for this, I think this could be the best atmosphere we’ve ever seen.

“The numbers for this fight are tracking great, and I think that this is just great for everyone – the biggest live event since the pandemic struck, and boxing has done that. It just shows that when you get it right, we have a monstrous sport on our hands.

“Boxing is being showcased on Saturday. We can be as proud as peacocks on the night as everyone around the world will be watching, they will see the atmosphere and say ‘wow, this is boxing!’ People have to tune in to watch this atmosphere and product and say, ‘this is the place to be’. “Very grateful to the people, and the response they have provided. I am proud to bring boxing back to this new normal and I am deeply grateful to everyone involved,” said promoter Eddie Hearn.

On the warpath Canelo commented: “Saunders is a boxer with many skills, apart from being left-handed; but I am not the same as six years ago. I am more mature in the ring. I have been involved in many important bouts, so it’s one more day at the office! I am very happy to be here and as always, we will give one hundred percent. I come to win, boxing is my life and that’s how I take it.”

Trainer Eddy Reynoso said: “We will have a difficult fight against Saunders. They are the two best super middleweight in the world fighting before 70 thousand people. Gathering so many people is a pride and also to be part of this card.”

Saunders, who is supported by the WBC heavyweight champion, The “Gypsy King” Tyson Fury, commented:

“I have boxed my whole life, since I was 5 years old. I have been dragged into the gypsy fields. We can all talk about how difficult our childhood was, but I am here for a reason and it is to win. Canelo has done brilliant things in boxing. He is a good champion, but he has come across the wrong man. On Saturday night we will have a great fight.”

The World Boxing Council, who will present the winner of the fight with the commemorative Mestizo Belt, presented today special recognitions to Canelo and his team.

Super middleweight champion of the World Boxing Council, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez (55-1-2, 37KO’s), fights WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders (30-0, 14 KO’s), Saturday night, as part of the celebration of Cinco de Mayo in the United States, at the Dallas Cowboys stadium in Arlington, Texas.

After some testy comments about the size of the ring, the expected face-to-face between the two fighters was held, in the majestic stadium that will host the fight. Both exchanged scowls, wolffish grins and some banter before the batter.

“I am totally focused on winning on Saturday. Saunders has talked a lot and made excuses but that doesn’t affect me. I’m just going to get in the ring and do what I have to do, ”Canelo succinctly commented.

“I have my own way of facing the fight and ‘Canelo’ will too. I will enter the ring to do my best and seek victory. Billy Joe Saunders says it is all going to be about the brain when he takes on Canelo Alvarez in their huge unification showdown on Saturday.

The highly-anticipated event will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN and takes place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas this weekend, as unbeaten WBO super-middleweight champion Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs) faces WBC and WBA champion Canelo (55-1-2, 37 KOs).

Saunders has been waiting for this moment for his entire life, and he has opened up on what he knows he needs to do in order to claim the historic win.

Saunders said: “This fight is all about the brain. Not about power, muscle or skill, it’s the brain and the game plan, and being able to execute that game plan.

“I brush opinions off because I know what goes through my head and my mind, and what I have done in my career is through the will and want to win, and the day I lose that, I won’t put a pair of gloves on again.

“I can only control what I am in control of and that myself, not what is outside the ring. It’s going to be a great fight it’s one I’ve wanted for years and it’s finally landed. There’s a lot at stake for both of us. Would I like my fans there? Yes. Would I like UK media there? Yes. If the fight was moved to the Mexican border I wouldn’t care.

“I have my own way of approaching the fight and Canelo will have too, he’s done this nearly 60 times. I’ll get in there as the best that I can be and that’s all I can control.

“I’ve been the underdog before, I’ve been the away fighter before, it’s not a new position, but I’m just in with a better opponent this time.

“If I go in there and I win, I’m not going to run and say never again, I’ll fight him again, I’ll fight anyone, anywhere, it doesn’t bother me. It’s good for boxing sometimes when the underdogs come through, and I don’t just mean me here, because it puts the sport on a higher platform to be watched.

“I’m at the top of the tree where I’ve done it all as an amateur, I’ve had 30 fights, I’m unbeaten, won every title coming through, two-weight World champion – I can sit back at night and say I’m top of the pile fighting the pound-for-pound king.”

Saul Alvarez has achieved what every boxing figure needs: to transcend beyond the sport’s loyal fans. The Mexican has become an icon and has made sure that the whole world has its eye on him every time he fights, which is why his fight in defense of the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight Super Championship against Billy Joe Saunders is a great sporting event.

Since the beginning of this week, the streets of many countries have been talking about “the Canelo fight”. The 30-year-old boxer is the center of attention in the sport of flat noses, an undeniable event in the boxing world.

When Alvarez was outpointed by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2014 he received a lot of criticism, not just for the loss itself but for how he lost. But sometimes only time can speak for people and “Canelo” rebounded to continue his rise to become the number one pound-for-pound fighter.

The Guadalajara native took the baton that fighters like Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather himself had years before. These two had particular tendencies in terms of media interest. Alvarez is in a middle ground, where he has almost equal parts of loyal fans and detractors. He seems to have become a fighter that people either love or hate but with time, many specialists have had to accept the fact that he has the quality to be considered the best in the world thanks to the victories he has achieved.

The year 2021 has been special for Canelo, as he has set his sights on winning all four 168-pound belts. He already holds the black and gold belt, and the WBC belt. The challenge against Saunders, who is the WBO Champion, will give him the opportunity to get that third belt and seek the fourth, the IBF title, in September against Caleb Plant.

Alvarez has been earning the respect of the fans little by little. His results have been so noticeable that there are fewer and fewer arguments from his detractors. His victory over Callum Smith in December was a blow on the table and now he will go for another Briton like Saunders whom he wants to beat to continue building his legacy.

“Canelo” is willing to face the best and has done so in recent times. Saturday’s fight will be another great challenge for him but a champion must rise to the occasion.

I see the fight going all 12 because I just don’t see any quit in Billy Joe.

Demetrius Andrade: I think it’s a good fight for boxing, but I should be the one fighting Billy Joe and the winner gets to fight Canelo.

Solo Canelo held a meeting with the media, which Saunders didn`t attend. Billy Joe was a no show! Regarding the fight, Saul sees it this way: “I have experience, I am a more mature fighter. Saunders thinks he’ll give me a boxing lesson. We’ll see. I’m not the same boy that I was five or six years ago. He can say what he wants, on Saturday night, we will see a different level of fighting. I hope I don’t need the judges decision that night.

“We have always been open about what the short-term and long-term plans have been. I want to unify the 168-pound division, and Caleb Plant would be next in line to secure that goal.

“The goal is to be undisputed at 168 pounds and then we’ll see. I think I could stay at super middleweight until the end of my career. I think I have about seven years left until I retire.

“I am totally focused on winning on Saturday. He must fight me, that must happen, it is not a problem. I’m just going to the ring and do my job. Saunders has made excuses and talked a lot. I’m just going to go in and do what I have to do.”

Billy Joe Saunders is a very particular boxer. He starts fighting even before stepping into the ring and knows what to do from the physical point of view but also from the psychological one to achieve victories; that’s why he presents himself as a great challenger for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in the battle for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight Super Championship this Saturday, at the AT&T Stadium, in Arlington, Texas.

In the sport’s commercial environment and to casual fans he may be a bit unknown, but those who know know better are aware of the magnitude of the challenge Alvarez is facing. BJS has been making his presence felt since the week began and will surely know how to make his mark in each of the events leading up to the weigh-in ceremony. World Boxing Council super middle champion Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez will face WBO champion from Britain Billy Joe Saunders on May 8 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

On the undercard Elwin Soto will clash with Katsunari Takayama as the main support bout to the card. Soto fights under the Matchroom banner for the first time on the show having penned a deal with Eddie Hearn.

In other fight, Kieron Conway will face Souleymane Cissokho. Conway (16-1-1 3 KOs) come to this fight winning with an impressive win against Navid Mansouri at Matchroom’s Fight Camp in Brentwood, Essex in August.

Frank Sanchez let his hands go for a seventh round KO win over Julian Fernandez on the undercard of Alvarez’s win over Callum Smith in San Antonio, Texas in December, and the big Cuban Heavyweight will be looking to repeat that feat against Nagy Aguilera.

Mexican-American talent Marc Castro makes it three Canelo undercard appearances from three since his pro debut on the Canelo-Smith card in Texas. the 21 year old will be looking to shine on the biggest stage once again over eight rounds against an opponent to be named soon.

The week of Cinco de Mayo will feature Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defending his World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight Super Championship this Saturday against the tough Billy Joe Saunders at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Arlington, in a unification bout on May 8th.

Canelo, both as a world figure in boxing and a Mexican warrior, has tried to become the icon of this special date for Mexican people and appear in the ring every first week of May. Back in 2020 it was not possible due to the pandemic but now it will be a much more special occasion to put his WBA and WBC belts on the line against WBO champion Saunders.

The Guadalajara-born fighter will be making his second fight of the year against the Briton fighter. Alvarez has set his goal to win all the 168 lbs. belts and so he began his 2021 plan with a fight against Turkey’s Avni Yildirim, which led to his challenge against Saunders, another step forward in his objective.

This fight is a major step up in level for Alvarez. Saunders is one of the sharpest fighters in the division, he is a southpaw and his intelligence makes him a tough opponent for Canelo’s style.

Saunders, who is 31 years old, is a contemporary of Alvarez’s 30 years; however, he is 180 cm and the the Mexican is 173 cm.

All promotional activities will take place this week leading up to the event hosted by Matchroom Boxing in the U.S. Alvarez has 55 wins, 1 loss, 2 draws, and 37 KOs. Saunders, on the other hand, is undefeated in 30 fights, with 14 KOs.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders held an online press conference on Wednesday with a little less than three weeks to go before their fight for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight Super Championship, as well as the WBC and WBO versions.

The fight will take place on May 8th at the AT&T Stadium in Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys, and is expected to be a great showdown between two of the best fighters in the division today.

“The truth is that making history is something very important for us, and these fights are important for what we want to achieve in boxing,” Alvarez said in his conversation with promoter Eddie Hearn through Matchroom Boxing’s YouTube channel.

About his opponent, Canelo highlighted his strengths and said he needs to beat him to take another step forward in his career.

“I know what Saunders has. He’s a fast fighter, a fighter that moves, he’s southpaw and tough. But at these levels I have to adapt to any style,” the Mexican assured.

“I’m going to win, no doubt. I’m training at 100 percent. I’m going to win and that’s the only thing going through my head,” continued the Guadalajara native.

Fort his part, Saunders spoke about Canelo and the significance of this bout as the biggest fight of his career so far.

“I respect every fighter that gets in the ring. I don’t put myself beneath or on top of anyone. It’s a legacy fight because of what is on the line,” he said.

With just a few weeks left before the showdown, the fight is heating up and a massive presence of fans is expected in the arena for an event that promises to be unforgettable.

Billy Joe Saunders insists it will be his brain over Canelo’s brawn when they meet in their huge unification showdown next month.

The highly-anticipated event takes place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday 8 May, and will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN.

Unbeaten WBO super-middleweight champion Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs) looks to add more belts to his collection when he faces WBC and WBA champion Canelo (55-1-2, 37 KOs), and Saunders feels he’s got the gameplan to win.

Saunders told TalkSport: “I’m the seventh Brit he’s faced, he’s dealt with six of them very comfortably. The Brits like dancing and moving and thinking they’ve got to run away, but I will be there for him to hit.

“I will be in range for him to hit. I’ll be setting traps, the same as he’ll be setting traps. I don’t think running a million miles an hour is going to do me any justice. He’s not got the best engine in the world, Canelo.

“He’s very good at what he does, extremely good at what he does, but there’s faults there. We’ve seen people try to run away and box him, we’ve seen people try to use the brawn, but we’ve only seen one man use his brain and that was Floyd Mayweather.

“Brain over brawn here. Brain wins this, technical thinking wins this. This is the way I look at it: you have to win every moment, every second in that ring when that bell goes.

“I’m prepared to put everything down, all of the chips down. As long as I get a fair decision then I believe in my heart of hearts that the job is definitely not an impossible job.

“People go on about how good he is, how great he is, but let’s not forget he’s been beat [by Floyd Mayweather] and he got beat in the first fight with Golovkin as well I thought. Let’s just hope that it’s all a fair playing field in and out the ring, and we can get to work.”

BBC (UK) to air Andrade-Williams, Chisora-Parker, Taylor-Jonas and Canelo-Saunders live 

BBC Radio 5 Live (UK) will broadcast three huge fight nights live on the radio, kicking off this weekend with Demetrius Andrade defending his WBO World Middleweight title against Liam Williams in Florida on Saturday night, then from Manchester on May 1 with the stacked card led by the Heavyweight clash between Derek Chisora and Joseph Parker and Katie Taylor’s undisputed Lightweight defence against Natasha Jonas, and the blockbuster World Super-Middleweight unification clash between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders from Texas.

Andrade (29-0 18 KOs) puts his title on the line for the fourth time against Welsh mandatory challenger Williams (23-2-1 18 KOs) and fight fans in the UK will be able to tune into the crunch battle from 11pm (GMT) on the BBC on Saturday night.

On May 1, it’s a huge night of action in Manchester as Heavyweight favourite Chisora (32-10 3 KOs) faces former World ruler Parker (28-2 21 KOs), undisputed World Lightweight champion Taylor (17-0 6 KOs) defends her titles against Jonas (9-1-1 7 KOs) in a rematch of their 2012 Olympic scrap and WBA World Light-Heavyweight king Dmitry Bivol (17-0 11 KOs) defends his crown against Londoner Crag Richards (16-1-1 9 KOs).

One week later, the biggest fight of the year so far takes place at the home of the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas as pound-for-pound king Alvarez (55-1-2 37 KOs) battles unbeaten Briton Saunders (30-0 14 KOs) for the WBC, WBA Super, WBO and Ring Magazine straps at 168lbs.

Eddie Hearn, president of Matchroom Boxing, visited the gyms where Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Billy Joe Saunders are preparing for their May 8th fight.

The promoter was first in San Diego, California, where Eddy Reynoso is located, and he took the opportunity to talk with Canelo Álvarez.

From San Diego he flew by private jet to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Billy Joe Saunders is training at the UFC Performance Institute.

The fighters, who will clash at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, are getting ready for a sure-fire classic.

Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders May 8th

World Boxing Council super middle champion Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez will face WBO champion of Britain Billy Joe Saunders on May 8 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Saunders has commented that he is the best fighter Canelo has faced since Floyd Mayweather, who defeated the Mexican by decision in 2013.

“We will see on May 8 if he is the best opponent I have faced. He is a fighter who moves a lot, he is left-handed, with experience. He is supposed to be one of the most difficult opponents, but we’ll see that on fight night,” mused Canelo in an interview with Univision.

Regarding Saúl’s loss to Mayweather, he himself commented: “I would definitely beat him today. It would be a very different fight. I am a more mature fighter. I have more experience and I learned a lot. That loss left me a lot. After losing I promised to become the best and I achieved it. At that moment the lose hurt me a lot because I wanted to win, but only God knows why he does the things he does, ”said Canelo.

If Canelo beats and defeats Saunders, he will potentially fight IBF World Champion Caleb Plant in September.
