Brandon Berry vs. Juan Manuel Witt: “The Cannon” scores biggest win
Brandon Berry vs. Juan Manuel Witt
Skowhegan Community Center, Skowhegan, Maine, USA – 11 June 2022
Brandon “The Cannon” Berry scored his careers biggest win, and captured his second Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) belt, on Saturday June 11.
In front of his passionate fans, coming in from West Forks, Berry beat undefeated Juan Manuel Witt to lift the vacant UBO International Super Welterweight title at the Community Center in Skowhegan, Maine, USA.
It was Berry coming forward from the start, cutting off the ring and working well to the body of the Argentinian, who, with his longer reach, tried to maintain distance and establish control with the jab.
Witt had good rounds three and four, connecting with several clean shots on the charging Berry, but “The Cannon” appeared hell-bent on breaking his opponent down with body-shots and kept coming.
The visitor also started round five well, landing nice combinations, but the relentless pressure of Berry was stating to take its toll, and the local favourite looked on top at the end of the round.
As round six got under way, Berry appeared determined to take advantage, marching forward and eventually flooring Witt with a right hand.
Witt beat the count, but soon found himself pinned in a corner and was knocked down again, this time by a well-placed right hand to the body.
In clear agony, Witt could not get up a second time and was counted out, suffering his first defeat in forty-two outings spanning fourteen years. The official time of stoppage: 2:51 of round six.
“I want to thank everyone here for their support, and I want to thank my opponent, coming all the way from Argentina. He was tough, and definitely had me hurt with some good body-shots too”, said Berry following the fight.
It was a good, competitive encounter between two exemplary sportsmen who showed each other nothing but respect before and after, but did their best to win during.
The new UBO International Super Welterweight Champion, who held the UBO All-America Welterweight title coming in, improved his professional record to 24-6-2 (17).
Witt, who was coming off winning a couple of regional titles on home soil this past March, falls to 39-1-2 (28).
