On Sunday December 11, Boxlab Promotions hosted the first ever WBA KO Drugs fight card in the United States at the Caribe Royale in Orlando.

The card opened the WBA’s 100th convention and featured eight title fights. This special event took place in front of a packed crowd featuring many current and former boxing greats.

In the main event of the evening, Las Vegas, NV based Cuban Orestes Velazquez, (6-0, 6 KO’s) became the WBA International junior welterweight champion when Argentina’s Guillermo Crocco, 20-3-1, 6 KO’s) retired on his stool after the first round due to a shoulder injury. Although he only had three minutes of work, Velazquez’ all-around talent was evident.

Undefeated Argentinian powerhouse Francisco Veron captured the WBA Continental middleweight champion by impressively stopping previously unbeaten Leonardo Ruiz of California. Veron took the fight to Ruiz, overwhelming him with aggressive shots to the body and head. A battered and bloodied Ruiz was extremely game but took a ton of clean shots, forcing at 2:37 of round 5.

Veron is now 11-0 with 10 KO’s while Ruiz slides to 10-1 (7 KO’s).

Idalberto Umara, (8-1, 5 KO’s) captured the WBA Fedecentro lightweight champion by stopping Emiliano Garcia (18-9-1, 13 KO’s) of Argentina in the fifth. Umara, who resides in Miami and is originally from Cuba, dropped Garcia twice in round three and closed the show by scoring another knockdown in the fifth.

Official time of stoppage was 2:17.

Unbeaten local favorite Jeovanny Estela of Orlando scored two knockdowns in a six round beatdown of Colombian veteran Luis Eduardo Florez Estella, 10-0 (3 KO’s), landed at will but the game Flores hung tough till the final bell.

Scores were 60-52 on all three cards.

Welterweight Damian “The Punisher” Lescaille scored three knockdowns en route to a first round stoppage of 41 fight veteran Rondale Hubbert at 2:39. Lescaille, a Miami Beach resident originally from Cuba, is a blue chip prospect with a decorated amateur background.

Heavyweight Heinrich Cordoba knocked out Phillip Jean Seide at 2:59 of the first round. A bronze medalist at the 2021 AIBA World Boxing Championships, Cordoba is now 2-0 as a pro with 1 KO.

Boxlab Promotions is hosting the World Boxing Association (WBA) KO Drugs fight night Sunday, December 11 at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, FL. The card will be televised live on CBS Sports Network at 7 p.m. ET.

This special evening of boxing opens the annual WBA Convention, which takes place December 11-14 at the Caribe Royale.

“We are proud to bring our 100th annual convention and signature KO Drugs show to Central Florida,” said WBA President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza. This is the first time the show is being held in the United States and we are excited to be partnering with our host the Caribe Royale Resort and Boxlab Promotions to bring you this event. We will have multiple WBA title fights on the card and feature boxers from all over the world.”

Tickets from $40 are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com. Doors open at 3 pm and the first fight begins at 4.

Headlining is a ten round junior welterweight contest between Cuban phenom Orestes Velasquez and Guillermo “El Leoncito” Crocco for the WBA International championship. The fast-rising Velasquez is 5-0 with all his wins coming by KO. Currently residing in Las Vegas, NV where he’s trained by legendary Ismael Salas, Velasquez most recently scored a third round knockout over Emiliano Garcia in August. Fighting out of Argentina, Crocco’s 20-2-1 with 6 KO’s, and his last two wins came via stoppage.

In the ten round co-feature, undefeated middleweights Francisco “Bebu” Veron and Leonardo Ruiz will square off for the WBA Continental Americas title. Veron, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, is 10-0 with 8 knockouts. On October 28, Veron scored a second round stoppage over countryman Franco Ledesma. Representing San Bernadino, CA, Ruiz is 10-0 with 7 KO’s. On November 18, Ruiz stopped previously unbeaten Josue Silva in the fifth round.

NABA super middleweight champion Yamaguchi “The Problem” Falcao, defends his belt against heavy-handed Ernest Amuzu. Hailing from Brazil and now residing in Florida, Falcao’s professional ledger is an outstanding 23-1-1 with 9 knockouts. On October 29, Falcao retained his title by dominating Alex Tehran over ten rounds.

Originally from Ghana and currently based in Florida, Amuzu’s 26-7 with 22 KO’s. He’s faced many world class fighters including Vijender Singh, Ievgen Khytrov and Radivoje “Hot Rod” Kalajdzic.

NABA middleweight Champion Connor “The Kid” Coyle defends his belt when he faces Sladan Janjanian in a ten round showdown. Representing Derry, Northern Ireland and training out of Pinellas Park, FL, Coyle’s 17-0 with 7 knockouts. On May 21, Coyle captured the NABA title with a decision victory over Antonio Todd at the Caribe Royale. Rated #10 by the WBA, Coyle most recently defeated veteran Silverio Ortiz in September.

Fighting out of Bosnia, Janjanian’s 34-13 with 24 KO’s and faced the likes of Bektemir Melikuziev, Martin Murray, Steven Butler, and Pierre Hubert Dibombe among others.

Kalliopi “Pink Tyson” Kourouni of Las Vegas, NV via Greece squares off against Colombia’s Calista Silgado in a ten round matchup for the WBA Continental Americas junior lightweight championship.

Kourouni, 12-3 (2 KO’s), shutout Simone de Silva over eight rounds this past February. A longtime contender, Silgado is coming off a fourth round knockout of Dalia Vasquez in October.

Bantamweight Melvin “Melo” Lopez, 28-1 (19 KO’s), of Miami, FL via Nicaragua challenges Washington-based Filipino Jobert “Lion” Alvarez, 20-3-2 (7 KO’s) in an eight rounder for the WBA Continental Americas title.

WBA Fedecaribe lightweight championship: Idalberto Umara (7-1 (4 KO’s), Miami, FL via Cuba) vs Emiliano Garcia (18-8-1 (13 KO’s), Buenos Aires, Argentina)

Former unified middleweight champion and future Hall of Famer Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez of Buenos Aires, Argentina faces Jefferson City, MO’s Noah Kidd in an eight round bout. Martinez, who won Fighter of the Year in 2010 after defeating Kelly Pavlik and Paul Williams, is 4-0 since returning to the ring in 2020.

In six round contests, heavyweight Herich Ruiz Cordoba meets Phillip Jean Siede, junior middleweight Jeovanny Estela faces Luis Eduardo Florez, and welterweight Damian Lescaille battles Rondale Hubbert.

Lightweight Alex Rios Vega will face an opponent to be named.

Heather “The Heat” Hardy versus Calista Silgado will be the main event of a six bout card stacked with local boxers on her much anticipated return to the ring on Thursday, October 13.  The card, tabbed “New Beginnings,” will take place at Sony Hall, in the heart of Times Square, mid-town Manhattan.

Hardy-Silgado will be a six round lightweight bout.  In the co-feature will be Ivan Golub, a native of the Ukraine who currently resides in Brooklyn.  The remainder of the card includes Andy Dominguez of the Bronx, Lebanon native Nadim Salloum now residing in Brooklyn, Orville Crooks who hails from the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn and Armenian Petros Ananyan who resides in Los Angeles.

The card is being promoted by Boxing Insider, who is making their professional boxing promotional debut.

Heather Hardy (22-2, 4 KO’s), Brooklyn born and raised and former World Boxing Organization Featherweight Champion, will bring “The Heat” back after 17 months of inactivity as she mounts another run at a world championship.  Hardy is currently ranked #12 in the lightweight division by the Women’s International Boxing Association.  Heather is a graduate of John Jay College in Brooklyn, began boxing in the gym at age twenty-four and made her professional debut in 2014 at the tender age of twenty-eight. In 2013 she won the vacant UBF International super bantamweight title and in 2014 won the WBC International super bantamweight title, which she successfully defended five times. On October 27, 2018, Heather became world champion, winning the WBO featherweight title with a unanimous decision win over Shelly Vincent at Madison Square Garden. Heather lost the title the following September to Amanda Serrano in a clash of women boxing stars.

“I’m glad to be working with Boxing Insider promotions. It’s great to start now so when it comes time to retire from fighting, it’s a way to keep me involved in the sport,” said Hardy who is not only headlining the event but also has a big behind the scenes role. “It has given me the opportunity to use all the knowledge I have acquired over the years as a fighter to help create this platform that is going to elevate the next generation of fighters from New York.”

Calista Silgado (20-15, 15 KOs) from Santiago de Tolu, Colombia made her professional debut in 2012 and is an eight-time world title challenger. She also fought in a bare-knuckle fight in October 2021.

In a co-feature, Ivan Golub, a native of the Ukraine who currently resides in Brooklyn, will be putting his USBA welterweight title on the line in a yet to be determined opponent.  Golub (20-1, 15 KO’s), known as “The Volk,” is ranked #7 in the world by the International Boxing Federation.

Fans at Sony Hall will also get a chance to see Andy Dominguez (7-0, 5 KO’s) of the Bronx, a dynamic flyweight who currently holds the World Boxing Association Fedecentro title, which he puts on the line. At 18 years of age, he is already 14th in the world in the WBA rankings.

The unpredictable Nadim Salloum (8-1, 3 KO’s), the first pro fighter born and raised in Lebanon, will be seen in a six-round light heavyweight bout. Salloum, who now lives in Brooklyn, has a large and vocal following among his countrymen in the New York City area.

Another light heavyweight on the card is Orville Crooks (3-0, 2 KO’s), one of best amateurs New York has produced in recent years. Crooks, who hails from the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, is both a U.S. Amateur champion and a National Golden Gloves champion. For him, the sky is truly the limit.

In an eight-round super lightweight bout will be former World Boxing Association Continental Americas Super Lightweight Champion Petros Ananyan (16-3-2, 7 KOs), born and raised in Armenia and now residing in Los Angeles. Petros will battle Brazilian Paulo Cesar Galdino (12-5, 8 KOs).

Maureen Shea ended a two-plus year layoff Saturday, outboxing Calista Silgado to a unanimous decision victory at Carnesecca Arena at St. John’s University in Jamaica, N.Y.

The scores were 79-73 on two cards and 77-75 on the third, all for Shea (30-2-1, 13 knockouts), who continues her push for a world title opportunity.

“The Real Million Dollar Baby” Shea looked as sharp as ever, despite having not fought since January of 2020. Silgado (19-14-3, 14 KOs) had her moments early on, but it was Shea’s body punching and sublime defensive skills which made the difference.

The victory was made even sweeter for the Bronx native Shea because she was was fighting in New York City for the first time since 2010.

“I felt great, I felt that this was where I belonged, I felt very at home in the ring,” said Shea, a former two-time boxing champion.

Shea says she wants a world title opportunity after being unjustly denied one last year by the WBA, despite being the no. 2 ranked contender for the vacant bantamweight title.

“These other girls can’t deny me, the sanctioning bodies can’t deny me. The public is gonna want to see me. Who doesn’t want to see that style and that kind of fight? It would be doing the fans a big disservice. I deserve a title,” said Shea, who is now based in Boca Raton, Fla., where she trains with boxing coach Derik Santos and strength and conditioning coach Phil Daru.

Among the many Shea supporters in attendance was undisputed women’s super middleweight champion Franchón Crews-Dezurn, who had designed Shea’s ring attire for the fight.

Crews-Dezurn says she believes Shea has all the tools and dedication to become a world champion again.

“Maureen is such an intricate part of women’s boxing. She’s broken a lot of barriers and she’s put in a lot of time,” said Crews-Dezurn.  “She’s just an amazing boxer and I’m honored I got to work with her.”

Shea says she hopes to be back in the ring again within three months.

Maureen Shea insists that her homecoming fight this Saturday is not a comeback; it’s a take back.

The Bronx native Shea (29-2-1, 13 knockouts) will face Calista Silgado (19-13-3, 14 KOs) at Carnesecca Arena at St. John’s University in the Jamaica section of Queens, N.Y.

The eight round junior featherweight bout will be part of the “Borough Boxing” card promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing.

“She’s been in there with a lot of top fighters. She’s a strong girl, she’s definitely durable and the experience is there so I expect a good fight. I’m not looking for the knockout, if it comes it comes. But I’m looking to put on a boxing clinic,” said Shea of Silgado, a native of Santiago de Tolu, Colombia who has fought eight times for a world title.

The fight will be Shea’s first in her hometown since 2010, and “The Real Million Dollar Baby” is excited to return home to begin her campaign to become world champion once more.

“I’m looking at myself and I’ve definitely evolved as a woman and as a fighter,” said Shea. “I know my why, I know why I’m doing this now.”

Shea has been one of the most accomplished female boxers over the past couple of decades, and has not lost in over a decade. She has won a pair of world titles and become a fan favorite through her thrilling fights, both in the United States and her mother’s home country of Mexico.

Still, there is plenty of unfinished business remaining for Shea, who was unjustly denied her world title opportunity last year by the WBA after she was passed over for a shot at the vacant bantamweight title despite being the no. 2 ranked contender.

Instead, the no. 8 and 9 ranked contenders fought for the vacant belt. Shea was also ranked no. 2 by the IBF at junior featherweight, but was dropped altogether from the IBF rankings.

Shea believes that the landmark women’s fight this past weekend between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano which sold out Madison Square Garden is indicative of what the sport is capable of if the right fights are made.

“I’m not doing this just for myself, I’m also doing this for a lot of women who get passed up,” said Shea. “After what happened last weekend, eyes are now on women’s boxing more than ever before. I’m looking forward to putting on a great performance. The fans deserve those big fights. They’re getting these girls who are fighting for world titles that are mediocre fighters. It’s unfair to the fans. What happened last weekend, I want to happen now for my weight class.”

Shea is now based in Boca Raton, Fla., where she is trained by boxing coach Derik Santos and strength and conditioning coach Phil Daru.

Carnesecca Arena is located at 80-00 Utopia Pkwy in Jamaica, N.Y. Doors open at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, May 7th at St John’s Carnesecca Arena in Queens, New York, Hilary Swank sparring partner and familiar Bronx born face will make her ring walk in the borough’s of New York for the first time in over a decade. Well known, former two-time World Champion, MAUREEN “THE REAL MILLION DOLLAR BABY” SHEA (Bronx, New York, 29-2-1 13KO’s) returns to the ring against former world championship challenger, CALISTA “CALI” SILGADO (19-13-3 14KO’s).

Maureen was born in the Bronx in 1981 and raised by her Irish father, who was an NYPD Detective, and her Mexican mother, who was in the airline industry. Her ring moniker, “The Real Million Dollar Baby” originates from her work as the main sparring partner for Hilary Swank leading up to the 2004 release of the award-winning film, “Million Dollar Baby.”

Maureen found great success when she became a professional boxer. Over her career she secured the IFBA Jr. Featherweight World, World, NABF Featherweight, NABA Featherweight and Interim WBC Featherweight Champion. In 2009 Maureen also challenged for the WBA Super Featherweight world title against Kina Malpartida at Madison Square Garden, falling short in the 10 round bout. Over the last 12 years, Maureen Shea has not lost a bout. Shea-Silgado will be an 8-round super bantamweight fight.

“My boxing roots are in NYC,” said Shea. “It has always been a goal of mine to come back to New York and fight. I have been away for 12 years, sharpening, growing and learning as a boxer and a woman. I am excited to come back to my hometown and show where my sacrifices and hard work has gotten me!”

Facing Maureen Shea is Calista Silgado who is coming off two separate world title challenges which include a decision loss to South Korea’s undefeated Hyun Mi Choi for the WBA World Female Super Featherweight Title and a decision loss to undefeated Melissa Oddessa Parker for the IBF World Female Bantamweight Title. Over her 35-fight career, the 34-year-old Silgado has challenged for a world title 8 times. With 14 of her 19 victories coming by way of KO, Silgado poses a threat for Shea with every punch.

Two world title fights will be featured on the undercard of the historic Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin – Kamil Szeremeta IBF/IBO World Middleweight Championship. Undefeated super middleweight contenders Ali Akhmedov (16-0, 12 KOs), from Almaty, Kazakhstan and Carlos Góngora (18-0, 13 KOs), from Esmeraldas, Ecuador, will rumble for the vacant IBO super middleweight world title and unbeaten WBA super featherweight world champion Hyun Mi Choi (17-0-1, 4 KOs), from Seoul, South Korea, will be looking to extend her 12-year title reign against Calista Silgado (19-11-3 14 KOs) from Tolu, Colombia. Presented by GGG Promotions and Matchroom Boxing with Warriors Boxing, the Golovkin – Szeremeta world championship event will take place Friday, Dec. 18, behind closed doors at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL. It will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN beginning at 5pm ET in over 200 countries and territories.

“Title fights have always been my goal, and together with the team we became one step closer to the world title. I am confident in myself, my strength, and can’t wait to step into the ring. The training camp was held at the highest level as always, and I am ready for the fight,” Akhmedov said.

“We have been training together for several years and I have seen his progress with every fight and training camp. He is ready to fight for the world title and I am glad that Ali represents GGGP at the turning point of his career. I am sure he will succeed,” Golovkin said.

“I know I will be in tough with Akhmedov and I am ready for anything he wants to offer. We will see if he can do the same against me. Boston is about to see the start of its newest championship dynasty — mine,” Góngora said.

Akhmedov, who has won 75% of his fights by stoppage, returns to the ring having won five of his last six bout by knockout. He captured the WBC International Silver super middleweight title on June 8, 2019 by knocking out undefeated Marcus McDaniel in the third round. He followed that up with his first title defence, a first-round stoppage of Andrew Hernandez, Oct. 5, 2019. Promoted by GGG Promotions, he has been in the same training camp of his mentor Gennadiy Golovkin for several years.

Góngora, who represented Ecuador in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, reaching the quarterfinals in the 2008 summer games, has been training out of the Boston area throughout his professional career. The Ecuadorian bomber’s skill set as a boxer puncher and his victory by knockout ratio of 72% has made him one of the most avoided fighters. Now, in his first opportunity to fight on the international stage, he has vowed to make the most of this opportunity.

Choi’s 19th pro outing is her 18th World title fight, and on her American debut, the two-weight World ruler will look to make a big statement to her star-studded rivals at Super-Featherweight, while Calista is looking to break her curse in World title outings, having challenged for elite belts on six previous fights.

“From the time I started boxing, it was my dream to fight in the United States,” said Choi. “Now, it’s time to realize that dream. I am ready to show everyone a great boxing match. Through this match I hope to gain respect and support from the world. I’m looking forward to my first match in the United States.”

Also added to the card is British Super-Middleweight World title contender John Ryder (28-5 16 KOs) who takes on Michael Guy (12-5-1 5 KOs) over ten rounds. Ryder is back in action for the first time since taking on Callum Smith for the WBA and WBC Diamond titles, running the champion close on his Liverpool home turf. The Londoner will be looking to shake the rust off as he prepares for a big fight in the first quarter of 2021.

Reshat Mati (8-0 6 KOs) has been an exciting addition to the paid ranks, and the Albanian Bear fights for the ninth time as a pro and unbeaten Californian 18 year old Jalan Walker (6-0 6 KOs) fights on US soil for the first time against Rafael Reyes (18-11 14 KO’s) having boxed in Mexico six times since his debut in November 2019.
