Canelo & Billy Joe Saunders Will Clash at Dallas Cowboys Stadium | Boxen247.com

WBC super-middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Álvarez and WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders from Britain, will fight during the week of Cinco de Mayo celebration in the United States, on May 8.

DAZN and promoter Matchroom Boxing confirmed the match will take place at the Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Canelo comes from defeating Turkish Avni Yildirim in three rounds at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. While Saunders comes to this fight after defeating compatriot Martin Murray by decision.

Last December, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez (54-1-2, 36 KOs), defeated former champion Callum Smith (27-1, 19 KOs) by unanimous decision in twelve stinging rounds, to win the super middleweight title of the World Boxing Council.

Smith, in an interview with Sky Sports, commented: “I was in the gym for most of the year, so I came to the fight with Canelo well prepared, otherwise I would have turned down the fight.

“I was in shape, and I did all twelve rounds well. Tactically I would have liked more time to adapt to Canelo, but there is no certainty that the result would have been different.

“He’s very smart using his jab. With anyone else you would throw the jab. But he wants you to do just that, because he’s a counter puncher. So you don’t throw that many jabs and while you’re waiting, he closes the gap and then he hits you.

“You think: ‘ How did he hit me? His best asset is his presence and his defense. It was so hard to hit him cleanly. When I was throwing punches at him, he was making me miss, although he wasn’t landing punches entirely. Yet, he knows how to neutralize you. I don’t think anyone will beat him right now. His defense is too good…and he has power.”

Eddy Reynoso speaks to TUDN about the Callum Smith fight where Canelo won a unanimous points victory on December 19th in Texas, in the process claiming Smith’s WBC super middleweight belt.

“With Saul there was a detail when he fought with Smith… in the third round he started to feel comfortable and he started wanting to play around with his hands down and walking forward. When he got back to the corner – I had to get his attention. I told him ‘you are not doing what you should be doing, do not underestimate him, that boy can knock you out with one punch, do not get out of your game plan because with that kind of guard he will catch you with the left or the right, even if you feel confident with that kind of guard, you have to go in the manner that we worked on – with our hands up so he doesn’t surprise you.

“In the final round I rarely send my boxers out there to look for the knockout and [it’s even more rare] when we are winning the fight so comfortably, but I sent him [to get the KO]. I said ‘you can knock him out, come out and throw everything, you have to try to knock him out.”

All things considered, Smith did well to last though to the end even though he has received plenty of negative press from the media for a relatively negative display. He is young enough to come back and learn from the experience.

Official Announcement: 

Canelo Promotions and Matchroom Boxing are delighted to announce that Canelo Alvarez will take on Callum Smith for the WBA and Ring Magazine World Super-Middleweight titles on Saturday December 19, live on DAZN in 200+ countries and territories worldwide (excluding Mexico).

Alvarez (53-1-2 36 KO’s) is back in action for the first time since knocking out Sergey Kovalev in November 2019 in Las Vegas, ripping the WBO World Light-Heavyweight title from the Russian to become a four-weight World ruler.

The Mexican superstar beat Smith’s old foe and fellow Liverpool fighter Rocky Fielding in December 2018 to win the WBA regular belt at 168lbs – his third weight to rule at – and will be gunning to follow his domination at Middleweight up to Super-Middle.

Smith (27-0 19 KO’s) has landed the huge fight he has craved, and the powerful Brit will be out to cement his position as top dog at 168lbs. ‘Mundo’ landed the WBA and Ring belts he puts on the line with a clinical stoppage win over fellow countryman George Groves in the seventh round of final of the inaugural World Boxing Super Series in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in September 2018. 

The 30 year old has defended the titles twice since, stopping Hassan N’Dam in New York in June 2019 and then outpointing John Ryder in his Liverpool hometown five months later. Smith will also be out for family revenge when he steps through the ropes, with Canelo having beaten Smith’s brother Liam in Texas in September 2016.

“I’m very happy to return to the ring and continue to make history,” said Canelo. “I am motivated to continue to be the best, and I look forward to fighting Callum Smith, who is one of the best at 168lbs.”

It is NOT 100% but there is a strong possibility that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s next bout could be against 168lb WBA ‘super world’ titlist and unbeaten Callum Smith. This will keep many people happy.

If it takes place it is likely to happen on December 18/19/20 and may even be shown by DAZN. Yes, go figure.

It’s in discussion, we are all hopeful. If it does and it falls on that December weekend, it will be a great weekend as hopefully there will be the rescheduled Garcia vs Campbell bout and the return of Gennady Golovkin (maybe).

A lot of if’s and but’s but if this all happens, what a an early Christmas it would be for the fans.
