Boxen247.com Boxing News Ben Shalom, Chris Eubank Jr., Eubank Jr. vs. Smith, Kalle Sauerland, Liam Smith 0
In a blockbuster start to 2023, the middleweight rivals go head-to-head on Saturday, January 21st at the AO Arena in Manchester in an eagerly anticipated bout at BOXXER: Unleashed – in association with Wasserman Boxing and live and exclusively in the UK and Republic of Ireland on Sky Sports Box Office.
Smith (32-3-1, 19 KOs) heads into this mouth-watering pay-per-view clash in the form of his life following wins over Jesse Vargas, Anthony Fowler and Roberto Garcia.
And after his winning BOXXER debut in September, Smith immediately set his sights on Eubank Jr as he plots his path to becoming a world champion for a second time.
Smith, 34, memorably went toe-to-toe with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in 2016 and comes from a proud, illustrious bloodline of champions including brothers Paul Smith Jr, Stephen Smith and Callum Smith.
Eubank Jr (32-2-0, 23 KOs) is a man whose family name needs no introduction at all. Son of legendary former world champion Chris Eubank, the 33-year-old has successfully carved out his own reputation in the sport.
But in Smith, Eubank Jr faces one the toughest tests of his stellar career. The Brighton-based fighter was a former IBO world title holder and is entering his prime, intent on starting the new year in style.
Eager to step back inside the ropes after his proposed October bout with Conor Benn was postponed, Eubank Jr last fought in February when he comfortably outclassed Liam Williams in Cardiff with an impressive unanimous decision points victory.
Chris Eubank Jr. said: “Has he been in there with some good fighters? Yes. Are they on my level? No. He’s a competent fighter, but class beats competence every day of the week. It’s a good opportunity for me to show I’m twice the fighter that he is as well as those he has faced.
“Manchester is an iconic sporting city. It has hosted many legendary fight nights and many memorable fighters have been born there. It’ll be a great performance, and the Eubank name will hopefully become a regular feature whenever the boxing history of Manchester is discussed.”
Liam Smith said: “He’s making a big mistake fighting me. Every time he has stepped up to elite level, he has failed. I am elite and he will fall again on January 21st in Manchester.
“If he was at 60% for the fight that never was against Conor Benn, then he’ll need to be at 160% to be ready to face me, a former world champion, in front of thousands of my fans in the North-West.
“For Chris this is a high-risk, low-reward. For me, it’s the perfect platform to show I will rule the world again in 2023. He needs to be prepared for the toughest night of his career.”
BOXXER CEO & Founder, Ben Shalom said: “What a way to start the new year. This is the fight that British boxing fans have been calling for.
“There aren’t many bigger names in the sport than Chris Eubank Jr, who many believe is coming into his prime now. This is his biggest fight in recent memory against a truly world class fighter Liam Smith. Liam is proven at world level and in the form of his life. Many will feel that he is the favourite going into this.
“It will be a huge occasion for British boxing and we’re delighted to bring this mouthwatering event to the fans in the iconic fight city of Manchester.”
Wasserman’s Head of Global Boxing, Kalle Sauerland, said: “Eubank vs Smith is a fight that has been talked about for a very long time. It’s an absolute banger of a boxing bonanza to kick off a huge year for the undisputed superstar of the middleweights Chris Eubank Jr, in a year in which we expect him to take over the division.
“The journey begins in the amazing fight city of Manchester which has been host to so many historic British blockbusters, on January 21 live on Sky Box Office we will witness the next one.”

CHRIS EUBANK JR VS. CONOR BENN FIGHT UPDATE – MATCHROOM & WASSERMANN
After discussions with various parties, we have taken the decision to formally postpone the bout between Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn.
It is undeniable that the British Boxing Board of Control’s decision to withdraw their sanctioning was procedurally flawed and without due process. That remains a legal issue between the promoters and the Board which we intend to pursue.
However, whilst there are legal routes to facilitate the fight taking place as planned, we do not believe that it is in the fighters’ interests for those to be pursued at such a late stage, or in the wider interests of the sport. As promoters, we take our obligations and duties very seriously, and a full investigation will now need to take place. We will be making no further comment at this time and news for ticket holder refunds will follow.

Boxen247.com Boxing News Chris Eubank Jr., Conor Benn, Eubank Jr. vs. Benn, Tony Bellew 0
Ahead of the anticipated Benn vs Eubank Jr on Saturday, BestofBets.com spoke to former WBC cruiserweight Champion Tony Bellew about matters pertaining to Conor Benn vs. Chris Eubank Jr, and also of his own rivalries from the past.
Conor Benn vs Chris Eubank Jr; history is repeating itself. What are your thoughts on this fight?
Tony Bellew: “It’s huge. It’s just mega. It’s never been done before and the closer this gets, you’ll realise the magnitude of it. It’s global. This is the first time these two boys, during their career, is properly stepping out of their father’s shadows.
“As for a potential trilogy, or similar, it all depends on the performance and the outcome; everything is down to how this fight plays out this weekend and I hope this will mark the beginning of a number of great fights between these two. And as long as the demand is big enough, the supply will be met. It’s always the same.”
“Chris Eubank Jr has come out saying that he can take Benn any time, any day…a punchy statement for someone that has a couple of defeats in the bag. But with all the chat he’s been given out, the pressure is on! But also, he has backed himself into a corner with the retirement pledge he made. He can’t say these things and then back track; especially when he’s stated that he only needs to be about 60% to bear Benn. Not only is that impossible but it’s untrue. Benn is in the best shape of his career so Eubank needs to be careful what he comes out with.
“Benn is undefeated in 21 fights so he doesn’t know what it’s like to lose; Eubank on the other hand, knows his limitations, as they’ve caused his defeats, but the bonus with this is that he’s been able to work on this ’shortfalls’ and those have made him a better boxer. As I’ve said before, although a defeat is hard to digest at the time, it tend to be what makes you a better and more consistent boxer.
“The difference on Saturday, and what makes the outcome hard to predicts, is that both fighters have had to adjust their weights.
“Benn is also seven years younger than Eubank at 25, but Eubank is strong and very fresh and fit so based on all this, I can play out various scenarios in my head, but I think it’ll come down to which version of Chris Eubank Jr, Chris decides ‘to bring’ on Saturday.
“Over the last few years, we’ve seen Eubank Jr play around with different boxing styles, some which has worked better than others; most recently, we’ve seen him imitate Roy Jones Jr, and should he go down this route this weekend, I think Conor Benn may outwork him. However, if Chris decides to become that destructive, strong inside fighter that we’ve seen in the past, then I think he may be too much for Benn to handle. It safe to say that it’ll be intriguing either way.
“Meanwhile, all the risk is on Conor Benn – he’s the one taking a massive gamble by jumping up in weight; and not just any weight but 13 pounds. This is a whole new territory for him and although the increase in weight may make him stronger, he’s not used to his weight. It may pay off but as far as the gamble goes, the odds are currently against him.
“For someone like Chris Eubank Jr, and I don’t say this lightly, but coming down three or four pounds is really tough, I’m not going to lie. But at the same time, you’re going to have huge size advantages when you get in that ring. And someone like Conor Benn is a throwback. You wouldn’t see other fighters doing this, not jumping one weight, but two weights to make a dream fight happen. And it’s not so much the fight, it’s the scenario. It’s the rivalry, it’s the past, the history of the fathers – these two guys have the same ambition that pushed their fathers to the very limits. There’s so much at stake here. There’s so much on the line. It’s just great to see. Good on them.”
So, we’ve briefly touched upon rivalries, I can’t leave you without talking to you about the Haye fights; no one gave you a shot. You were four to one, I think that’s right, because I remember, because I put a tenner on you to win that fight, because I looked at it and I knew you wanted it more. What I want to ask is, obviously you’ve beat him twice, which must be hugely satisfying. How satisfying was it to beat David Haye?
Tony: “It’s obviously nice to go against the odds and everyone writing you off, saying you’re going to lose and you’re going to get absolutely smashed and smoked. And, yeah, that was nice to do, but beating David is no better than beating Mateusz Masternak for the European title. It’s just another fight. I was fighting David for the money, 100%. So, that’s what it was all about. I don’t take no personal satisfaction in beating up David Haye, if that’s what you want to hear. I like David Haye.”
So, was there real hatred between you guys?
Tony: “Of course, before the fight, massively. David hated me, he wanted to kill me. And I knew that. I sensed it from him. I didn’t hate David, I wanted to just beat him. I wanted to win. And that’s all I want to do with all my opponents. I never want to hurt any of them. David genuinely wants to kill me because I’d wound him up that much. You have to understand that. He genuinely thought I was taking the fight for the money and nothing else. That was a big factor, but I also knew I could beat him. He never believed that I believed it that I could beat him. He thought that I was just taking the fight for the money.
“So, when he realized and we got up close, that first time at the first press conference, that this cheeky f***er doesn’t actually… he’s not just taking this… he actually thinks he can beat me. That’s when he’s throwing the punch and he’s lashed out because I’ve insulted his ego. And that’s just how it goes. It is what it is.
“Rivalries, and how it’s drawn on, it’s crazy, but it’s just styles make fights. I can make him miss. I’m used to facing light heavyweights and cruiserweights who are much faster than David Haye, so when you can make him miss, there’s only so many punches he can throw around, and if you keep making him miss, he’s going to tire, simple as that. And that’s just how I work, and I knew the game plan was perfect. Nobody believed me. Next to no one. There were probably [some] in my own team who didn’t believe me.
“But I made it pay on the night, mate, and as I say, the only disappointing side of this is the whole world writes me off before the fight. And the two fights he had previously, he looked so explosive. He looked so powerful. He looked brilliant in the two fights before me. But then all of a sudden, because I beat him, he’s an old man, past it. So, yeah, they’re the only distractions. But I don’t mind. I don’t fight for plaudits, I fought for money, that stage in my career.
“So, I don’t fight to be given praise. Like I said, I’m a prize fighter at that stage in my career, and I am purely a prize fighter. All my dreams have been fulfilled, so my only obligations at that stage is money and cashing out and I done it massively against David Haye not once but twice. And to have the world say I’m going to get knocked out once was great…And then when he comes back and he’s perfectly fine…and I do him even quicker, everything I said in both those press conferences, just go back and watch it, because everything I said before both fights, I followed through with and done.”
“And it went exactly the way I said it would. So it worked out okay. I can’t complain, but I’m also very appreciative to David Haye, because without David Haye coming into my career the way he did, I’d probably still be fighting today. “
Of all your fights which one gave you more satisfaction?
Tony: “I think for all my team and the other people around me, it’s the David Haye fight. This guy said he was going to put me in a coma. This guy said my kids were going to visit me in the hospital, so for the majority of the public, and whenever I’m out now, everyone will stop me and say, “Made up, you beat up that David Haye, made up you beat David Haye. We loved it. We were supporting you.” But for me, personal satisfaction came from the Nathan Cleverly fight. I was detracted and so slated after that first fight with Nathan Cleverly. “You’ll never be a world champion. You’ll never be this champion. You’ll never be that champion.
“Well, I went on and became British, Commonwealth, and European champion. I went on and lifted the WBC Cruiserweight championship of the world. I defended it against a guy who had never been stopped, BJ Flores, I absolutely smoked him and blasted him out of the water like no one else had ever done before, and then I went on and beat his good mate in David Haye twice. After that, I fought for all the belts against the greatest cruiserweight that’s ever touched the Earth in Oleksandr Usyk. I come up short, but I can live with that, because as I said before, I lost to the best cruiserweight there’s ever been in my opinion.”

Boxen247.com Boxing News Chris Eubank Jr., Conor Benn, Eubank Jr. vs. Benn, Johnny Nelson, Wren Kitchens 0
Former WBO title holder Johnny Nelson shares his thoughts on the upcoming Benn and Eubank fight:
Interviewer: Roy Jones Jr. has come out and said that Eubank will beat Conor Benn with no problems, what are your predictions on this fight? Will it be as easy as a lot of people are making out?
JN: No, it won’t be because of the weight, and it all depends on the weight. That will determine how this fight is going to be.
If Eubank is apparently going to weigh 11st 5 on the Saturday morning, he’s going to weigh no more than 11st 10, or pay the fine. And so, if it was at super middle weight I would say Eubank every day of the week, he is too big for him [Conor]!
But at this weight, with the restriction on, this is a closer fight than people think, Conor is a good emerging talent, getting better with each fight. Even though Eubank has the experience, he has been there and is naturally the bigger man – his weight is going to be a big telling factor in this fight.
Interviewer: Do you feel like it means more to Benn than Eubank?
JN: Oh, yeah, without a doubt! Benn wears his heart on his sleeve. He’s like his dad, he is his father’s son.
Its not about money for him, this is for real. Eubank needs to be careful that he doesn’t underestimate the hunger, desire and want from Conor Benn.
Interviewer: Do you think that the pressure of their father’s fights in the past is going to play a major role in this fight? Is that going to give either fighter the edge?
JN: No, not at all! As you get in the ring, you’re an individual. Of course, it’s the cherry on the cake, and I think a Eubank will always be able to undermine a Benn because Benn’s wear their hearts on their sleeves and Eubanks can come across as smug and a know all. So, I think a Eubank can always get the psychological edge over a Benn.
But when it comes to the fight, you’ve got two guys that want to fight and that can fight.

Boxen247.com Boxing News Chloe Watson, Chris Eubank Jr., Chris Healey, Connor Coyle, Conor Benn, David Martin, Ellie Scotney, Felix Cash, Galal Yafai, Gemma Ruegg, Gohan Rodriguez Garcia, Harlem Eubank, Lyndon Arthur, Mary Romero, Matty Harris, Nancy Franco, Shannon Courtenay 0
Matchroom and Wasserman stars make up the undercard when ‘Born Rivals’ Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn clash on a sold-out blockbuster night of action at The O2 in London on Saturday October 8, exclusively live on DAZN around the world and on DAZN PPV in the UK and Ireland.
Olympic gold medal star Galal Yafai will defend his WBC International Flyweight title against Gohan Rodriguez Garcia. Yafai (2-0 2 KOs) has made an impressive start to life in the paid ranks following his golden trip to the 2020 Tokyo games, winning the title he puts on the line on his debut at the North Greenwich venue in February, and successfully defending it with a second round KO win at Madison Square Garden in April. The Birmingham ace now meets Mexican Garcia (12-1-1 1 KO) in his second defence of his title, with the 21 year old challenger fighting outside of his homeland for the first time in his second title fight, having landed the International Silver title in April 2021.
Light-Heavyweight star Lyndon Arthur is back out in quick succession following his return to action after headlining in September. Arthur (20-1 14 KOs) stopped Walter Sequeira in bullyish fashion when he got the win inside six rounds at The University of Bolton Stadium earlier this month, and the former Commonwealth champion will look to swiftly put his name back where it belongs and return to title action.
World rated Middleweight Felix Cash continues his hunt for World title honours as he meets the unbeaten Connor Coyle for the WBA Intercontinental title. Undefeated Cash (15-0 10 KOs) got through a gut-check in his last outing against dangerman Magomed Madiev at Alexandra Palace in February, and the former British and Commonwealth champion, ranked number four with the WBO and number 10 with the IBF, will look to enter the top ten in the WBA with victory. Coyle (17-0 7 KOs) will have other ideas though, and the Florida-based Irishman, ranked number ten to Cash’s number 12 ranking with the WBA, will be out to ruin Cash’s plans and make a name for himself in his first fight in England.
It’s a family affair for Harlem Eubank, who fights on the undercard of his older cousin Chris Jr and meets Spaniard David Martin over six rounds. Eubank (15-0 6 KOs) has made the Super-Lightweight division stand up and take notice with eye-catching performances of late, notably his stunning one-punch KO of Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd in May at The Indigo at The O2, after forcing Viorel Simion to retire after five rounds of a scheduled eight in Cardiff. Not to forget his most recent win over Eliot Chavez in July where Eubank outclassed and frustrated the dangerous Mexican opponent into illegal punches, forcing a disqualification win to be awarded.
Ellie Scotney hunts for another title as she challenges Mary Romero for the European Super-Bantamweight title. Scotney (5-0) landed the WBA Intercontinental title in February at Alexandra Palace and successfully defended that strap at The O2 in May – beating former World champions Jorgelina Guanini and Maria Cecilia Roman in those bouts. The next strap in her sights proudly belongs to Romero (8-2 2 KOs) who puts the belt on the line for the third time. The Spaniard picked up the vacant belt on home turf in January 2020 and then successfully defended it against Amy Timlin in Barcelona in September 2021 and most recently against Maria Cecchi in Milan, Italy in May and now fights in England for the first time in a clash that should move the winner into World title contention.
Big hitting Heavyweight ‘Magic’ Matty Harris is on the hunt for a third first round KO win in a row and will take on Chris Healey over six. Harris (3-0 2 KOs) put Mait Metsis away in the opening session of their fight in Newcastle in April and repeated that trick two months later in Liverpool against Pawel Strykowski. Standing in the way of the Coventry man’s hat-trick is Healey (9-12 2 KOs), the Stockport stalwart who has already tested the rising ambitions of Fabio Wardley and David Adeleye this year.
Shannon Courtenay makes a welcome return to the ring against Gemma Ruegg. Courtenay (7-2 3 KOs) will step through the ropes just one day shy of her last action in Liverpool, where Jamie Mitchell picked up Courtenay’s WBA World Bantamweight title via majority decision after the Brit failed to make the weight. ‘The Baby-Faced Assassin’ is aiming to get right back into the mix to become a two-time World ruler, and that starts with her return against Ruegg (5-4 1 KO), the Bournemouth fighter who like Courtenay, also fights for the tenth time in her pro career.
Former Team GB talent Chloe Watson completes the line-up, with the Flyweight talent taking on former World champion Nancy Franco in a six rounder. Watson (3-0) returns to the capital where she made her debut at York Hall in November and is looking for win number four in the paid ranks after winning on home soil in Merseyside in June in her first six rounder against Fara El Bousairi. The Birkenhead boxer, who trains under the former Light-Welterweight and Welterweight world champion Ricky Hatton, faces a real step up in the form of Franco (19-17-2 KOs), the vastly experienced Mexican who has held the World title at Minimumweight and challenged at Light-Flyweight.
“We’re just over a fortnight away from ‘Born Rivals’ and one of British boxing’s most monumental moments in the sport. A rivalry reignited by two fighters who are ready to settle the family business and find themselves under the spotlight of global boxing, and we have the perfect card to suit such an occasion,” said Kalle Sauerland, Wasserman’s Head of Global Boxing. “A world class event demands a card that matches the hype and, whilst we’re settling the biggest rivalry in boxing history, we have always allowed stars to break out and raise their stock on massive platforms. We’re almost there, the countdown begins!”
“We have built a stacked night of action at The O2, building up to an historic main event,” said Eddie Hearn. “There’s a great mix of rising stars and established names looking to enhance their claims for World title action. The atmosphere is going to be electric on a sold-out night in London, so this is a golden opportunity for these fighters to make a name for themselves before we witness an explosive new chapter in a classic British rivalry.”

Boxen247.com Boxing News Chris Eubank Jr., Conor Benn, eddie hearn, Kalle Sauerland, Ronnie Davies, Tony Sims 0
Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman:
“Well good afternoon everyone and welcome to this press conference in London to announce what I still can’t really believe. I’m sure many of you sitting here can’t quite believe it as well. Eubank Jr against Benn. October the 8th, O2 Arena, live and exclusive on DAZN PPV.
“I wish we had seven O2 Arenas – this fight is an absolute monster. The biggest in British boxing, perhaps one of the biggest ever in the sport in this country. I’m delighted to be sitting here alongside our co-promoter Kalle Sauerland and Wasserman Boxing. Thanks to Kalle, Team Eubank, Team Benn for coming together to make this iconic fight.
“We all grew up with this rivalry. The greatest rivalry in British boxing. In 1990 I was 11 years old and I remember one of the greatest nights for our family, when Chris Eubank Snr stopped Nigel Benn to win the world Middleweight Title in Birmingham. Three years later I remember the night so clearly, a hazy night at Old Trafford, over 45,000 people, 15 million on terrestrial TV watched the rematch.
“Now almost 30 years on we get to see part three. An incredible moment, these two step up for what will be the biggest fight in British boxing.”
Kalle Sauerland, Wasserman’s Head of Global Boxing:
“It has been a long, long, road; not as long as some people think however. The starting gun was fired a little early when people thought the deal was done when we had not actually exchanged contracts yet, but we are dealing with a monster. Not a monster for the Heavyweight World Championship, not a unification, not a grudge match; we’re dealing with a family feud. A feud that started on the November 18, 1990 and one that made me fall back in love with boxing.
“The interest around what happened back then, 19 million viewing on terrestrial television, 500 million viewers around the world, you don’t need to sell it. At the same time, look at the gladiators we have up here. They have fought their way out of their father’s shadows in their own right. They sit up here now, and put it all on the line – family legacy, I don’t think there’s any title you could place on it that is bigger than that.”
Chris Eubank Jr:
“For him it’s a win-win and for me, if I lose to Conor Benn on October 8, I’m finished. My goal is to fight for a World Title in the next year. I can’t lose to Conor Benn and then expect to fight for a Middleweight World Title, it can’t happen.
“Nothing like this has ever happened before in the history of the sport, two legends went into a ring 30 years ago and inspired a nation. They became superstars and etched their names into not just boxing history, but British history. Now, 30 years later, their son who have both made themselves in the sport of boxing are going to get in the ring.
“The Eubank and Benn name are going to go to war for the third time. Nothing like this has ever happened before and I don’t think it will happen again, ever. That’s why I took this fight. We have to uphold those names to the best of our ability, that’s where it makes it personal for me. I have to make sure the Eubank name stays on top of the Benn name.
“If I’m at 100% then it’s a public execution. I’ll be 60% on the night and that’ll be enough to do whatever I want with you. I don’t hate anybody I would ever give anyone that type of power over me. I don’t even dislike Conor,” he said. “But at the same time this fight is personal. The things his father put my father through, I can’t forget and I can’t forgive.”I watched the mental toll and the injuries. Him going to hospital and losing half his tongue. I watched Nigel tell my father on national TV that he hated him. These are things I can’t forgive. This is a fight where our family names are on the line and we have to uphold them. That’s where it makes it personal.”
Ronnie Davies:
“It’s unbelievable. I feel privileged to have been with his father for all of those years – 20 odd World Title fights with him. I’ve got the same again with his son, I was there when he was born and I’ve always been with him.
“I think it’s going to be a great fight. The first Eubank-Benn fight was brutal, I was in the corner and I could hear them saying, ‘is that all you’ve got, you’re punching like a girl’. You could hear the power. After the fight I said to Barry, ‘you can’t let them fight again, no man should have to go through that again’.
“I think this next fight will be just as brutal. They’ve both got that passion which I saw in their fathers. I knew them both well. I’ve got the greatest respect for Conor Benn and his trainer Tony Sims. I go back a long way with Tony. It’ll be a great fight. Eubank is too battle hardened and too big for Conor. Conor’s time will come again but he will get beat.”
Conor Benn:
“I’ve said that numerous times. This is a fight that makes sense for now. The World Title is still the goal, but this is once in a lifetime. This is a fantasy fight for the British public. Forget about how far apart we were when I first turned pro, the names were still mentioned to me. Eubank was still mentioned to me before I even had my debut fight. It’s just been brewing, and the stars have aligned for October 8th.
“As Chris said, we’ve both walked the same road so you’ve got to respect that. I respect all fighters. But when we get in there we will settle the family business. I’m taking care of the family business. The last fight was a draw. It’s about time I set the score straight.
“At the end of the day it’s not my job to worry about what he thinks or what he does, or his team and how he’s approaching this. I worry about what I’ve got to do. I’ve always worried about what I’ve got to do, irrelevant of everyone else and what they’re doing. I’m focusing on delivering on October 8th. I haven’t failed to deliver. I haven’t tasted a loss, and I don’t plan on taking a loss on October 8th.”
Tony Sims:
“I think this fight was always aligned to happen, even from the first day that Conor Benn put gloves on. It’s always been spoken about. Like Conor said, it’s a fight for the British public, it’s probably the biggest fight of this decade or of this generation.
“Obviously I wanted to see the fight happen and I believe in Conor Benn. He’s so diligent in his training and the knowledge of his boxing game. I believe that the weight at 157 is what Chris Eubank’s team asked for, we agreed to that. I believe he will be strong at that weight, Conor Benn.
“He spars with all of the world level Middleweights and Super-Middleweights in my gym day in day out. When he fights these days I don’t put him in with Welterweights for sparring, I always go with Middleweights for sparring, because the Welterweights just don’t hold up to him. I know what he’s made of and I know what he can bring to the table.
“That was a big factor in taking this fight. Conor really wanted the fight, I spoke to Nigel on the phone about it and Nigel said the fight is ready to happen. We’re here now and October the 8th is not far away. Me and Nigel go back a long way and I was actually sparring with him around that time. I was at the second fight at Old Trafford. What great fights they were, they’ve lived on through the past 30 years.
“People still talk about those fights, and for this fight to happen now, I always thought this day would come. I always thought this fight would happen. The time is right now for it to happen. What a fight it’s going to be. Chris Eubank Jr is a great fighter and a fantastic athlete, Conor Benn is the same. They’re both their father’s sons and they both speak like theirs fathers and they both fight like their fathers. I expect a great fight on October 8th and obviously I’ve got confidence in my fighter Conor Benn being victorious.”

The O2 in London, England – 8 October 2022
Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn will collide in a colossal catchweight clash at The O2 in London on Saturday October 8, shown exclusively live on DAZN around the world and on DAZN PPV in the UK and Ireland, 30 years on from their iconic father’s second showdown at Old Trafford.
An unmissable event for fight fans around the world, Eubank Jr vs. Benn promises to be one of the most electrifying British boxing contests in decades as the sons of two of the sport’s most famous names battle it out in an incredible second-generation showdown.
Eubank Snr and Benn Snr captured the nation’s imagination with their bitter rivalry during a boom era for British boxing in the early nineties. The pair laid it all on the line in front of millions on terrestrial TV, sharing two legendary battles in 1990 and 1993. Eubank Snr stopped his foe in the ninth round of their first bruising battle at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
It took three years for the rematch to happen which took place at a sold-out Old Trafford in Manchester. The clash for the WBC and WBO Super-Middleweight Titles ended in a draw and the pair never fought each other again. But their sons will reignite the family feud in one of the biggest fights the UK has ever seen.
Eubank Jr (32-2, 23 KOs) heads into his blockbuster bout with Benn coming off the back of an impressive shutout points win over Liam Williams at the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff in which he showed his class by knocking down the Welshman four times.
Having previously campaigned at Super-Middleweight, the 32-year-old is a former two-time IBO Super-Middleweight Champion. He captured the IBO crown with a 10th round stoppage win over Renold Quinlan in 2017, before defending the belt against German legend Arthur Abraham and Avni Yildirim.
Following a huge clash with George Groves for the WBA 168lbs World Title in February 2018 in which he was defeated on points, Eubank Jr reclaimed the IBO Title in 2019 with a spectacular performance against rival James DeGale at The O2 in London.
Returning to the Middleweight division, Eubank Jr claimed the WBA Interim Middleweight World Title for the second time with a TKO win over former World Title challenger Matvey Korobov in December 2019, while making his US debut at the Barclays Center in New York.
Benn (21-0, 14 KOs) has exploded onto the world Welterweight scene with a series of eye-catching wins that have propelled the big-hitting 25-year-old Essex native into the top five rankings with all of the recognised governing bodies.
He sent out a vicious warning to his 147lbs rivals by wiping out Samuel Vargas inside the opening round at the Copper Box Arena in April 2020, living up to his nickname as he took just 1 minute and 20 seconds to viciously halt the durable Colombian.
‘The Destroyer’ secured a stunning knockout win over former World Champion Chris Algieiri in December 2021, taking out the American with a brutal right hand in the fourth round of their top of the bill clash at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool.
Another devastating early finish followed at Manchester’s AO Arena in April as Benn demolished South Africa’s Chris van Heerden inside two rounds to send an emphatic message to the top names in the ultra-competitive 147lbs division.
Now one of the hottest properties in world boxing, Benn dares to be great by leaping up in weight to challenge himself against former Super-Middleweight World Title challenger Eubank Jr in a fight that will bring the UK to a standstill.
“I grew up watching their legendary battles and always wanting to emulate that, and find my own arch nemesis… could this now be Conor Benn? We will find out,” said Eubank Jr.
“He has walked the same path as I have. I know his struggle. Living in the shadow of a legend and trying to break out of that shadow and make his own name. If he can beat me, his name will be made, and he will never walk in his father’s shadow again.
“It’s a fight that’s going to spark the imagination of the British public, that’s what I’m happy about. In terms of anticipation, legacy and hype it’s the biggest fight of my career.”
“This fight is for the legacy and was an opportunity I felt I couldn’t pass up,” said Benn. “My team and I had other options on the table as I’m currently ranked top 5 with all governing bodies at Welterweight and no doubt I’m looking for a World Championship fight very soon, but this fight is embedded with so much history and I know it’s one the public really want to see. To me this fight is personal – it’s more than titles and rankings, this is unfinished business between our families!
“Born Rivals is the perfect calling for this fight, because we have always been associated and I’ve always been asked if we’d ever fight, and now I can’t wait for the world to be able to watch us make that happen.
“All I know is that from my side, this will be an all-out war, last man standing kind of fight. Neither will give up until the last bell rings. I won’t be looking to take this to the score cards though, this will be explosive from the off. I’m so up for this.”
“I can’t quite believe this is happening but let me tell you, it’s happening!” said Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman. “Weeks of negotiations have led to one of the biggest moments in British boxing – these two Born Rivals will do battle in an epic match up that has absolutely everything. Ever since they both turned professional, people talked about this moment and now is the time to see the historic rivalry continue. I want to thank DAZN for all their support in making this mega fight – roll on October 8!”
“Throughout 20 years of promoting boxing on the highest level, from unification fights to Heavyweight World Championship bouts all over the world, this is without doubt the most iconic fight we’ve had the pleasure of promoting, said Kalle Sauerland, Wasserman’s Head of Global Boxing. “I fell in love with boxing as a teenager growing up in London, watching the original Eubank vs. Benn saga, and it gives me a huge sense of pride to now be promoting Eubank vs. Benn decades later.
“This fight is guaranteed to be astronomical in its own right. Their surnames create a grudge match, but their skillsets make an elite-level contest between two stars moulding their own legacies. This is boxing’s own ‘Back to the Future’, and there’s not a single sports fan who doesn’t want to see this blockbuster.”
“We are thrilled to be broadcasting this mega fight in October to boxing fans around the world,” said Joseph Markowski, EVP, DAZN. “Benn and Eubank are two of the most storied names in British boxing, and in Conor and Chris you have two of the most exciting fighters around. This fight is not to be missed and we look forward to showcasing this blockbuster evening worldwide on DAZN.”

Years of rivalry and a river of bad blood carried Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Williams into this grudge match in Cardiff, but in the event, but favour flowed almost entirely one way once the fight got started.
Eubank managed to knock Williams down an astonishing four times during the fight, a statistic made all the more remarkable given that Williams is notoriously gritty and not a fighter given to being put down easily.
Even more surprisingly, three of the knockdowns came in the first four rounds, with Williams still fresh and the volume of traded blows a mere fraction of what they would be by the time the final bell sounded.
The secret was Eubank’s left hand. A stiff jab – almost a lead cross – put Williams down in the first round, dropping him when he came surging forwards looking to put pressure on. A left hook delivered the same service in the same circumstances a round later.
Williams was immediately back to his feet both times and immediately back into the fray, but Eubank Jr was in total control of the pace and distance of the fight.
Moving backwards and allowing Williams to hold centre, Eubank left his rival’s punches falling short again and again. When Williams would press forward to close the distance, Eubank would have counters waiting for him.
Tensions were high between the pair throughout; there was a lot of jostling and butting in the clinches and at the end of the third, Eubank landed a hard right hand after the bell had gone, raising those tensions still further.
Williams had more success in the third round and carried that momentum into the fourth, only to take yet another stiff left which scored a knockdown. Despite this setback, he was able to come on strongly in the following rounds and seized advantage at times as Eubank seemed to tire.
For the next five rounds, Williams had his best successes of the fight, with Eubank on the back foot and throwing less than he had in the preceding rounds. Going to the body paid dividends for Williams repeatedly and Eubank looked to have felt more than one of those thudding body blows.
No dismay from Eubank though; he showboated and gurned his way around the ring, mocking Williams and taunting him while staying frustratingly out of reach. As one spirited exchange ended round six, Eubank ended with a little pat on the behind for Williams, as if congratulating the efforts of a schoolboy footballer.
With Eubank playing defensive in this middle portion of the fight, Williams went looking for the knockdowns he needed. They were nowhere to be found though; Eubank had a superb uppercut counter waiting for Williams’ more enthusiastic forward ventures, though he did get caught himself with some solid 1-2 and right hand efforts.
His successes came undone in the eleventh round though as he took yet another blow – this time a right hand – which put him down for a count. With the fight now completely out of Williams’ reach unless he scored a clean knockout, Eubank spent the final round playing and showboating, giving Williams no chance of landing anything solid.
The result was inevitable: a unanimous decision win for Eubank on every card.
“I am happy with the performance, I wanted to teach that man a lesson, he said some quite menacing things to me in the lead-up to this fight,” Eubank said.
“I wanted to punish him – I didn’t want to knock him out in one round, I wanted to punish him.
“Headbutts, headlocks… I am surprised he didn’t get disqualified. But I took it like a man and I punished him like I said I would. It was a fun night. I think I showed some of my critics a different side to me.
“There was no danger, if I had stepped on the gas at any point in the fight he would have been gone. There are levels to this game. Don’t be a big mouth against guys you can get hurt against.”
Chris Eubank Jr def Liam Williams, Unanimous Decision, R12 (116-109, 116-108, 117-109)
FIGHT #7
10 x 2 Mins WBC/WBA/IBF World Middleweight Titles
CLARESSA SHIELDS v EMA KOZIN
Claressa Shields retained her collection of world titles – and her claims to ‘GWOAT’ status – when she outclassed challenger Ema Kozin over ten rounds, coming very close to stopping the fight at times.
Machine-gunning flurries of straights and then hitting the body with hooks, Shields was punishing Kozin through the fight. Kozin was hurt several times but hung in there, despite Shields increasingly going for broke in search of the stoppage.
“I thought there were plenty of moments where the referee should have stopped it,” Shields said. “I give myself an A-. The only thing I didn’t do was get the damn knockout!
“She took six, seven, eight shots without responding. I thought her corner might have stopped it.”
After the bout concluded, Shields’ arch-rival Savannah Marshall was on hand to offer her some robust criticism. “If you perform like that against me, I’ll absolutely wipe the floor with you,” she told her American antagonist.
Shields responded with vitriol, resulting in an exchange of words between the pair ringside, live on Sky Sports.
If Marshall successfully defends her WBO title later this year, the stage will be set for the two to face off at last.
Marshall is the only fighter in the world to hold a win over Shields, from their amateur days, and a rematch in the professional ranks would be perhaps the biggest fight in the history of women’s boxing.
Claressa Shields def. Ema Kozin, Unanimous Decision (100-90, 100-90, and 100-90)

Boxen247.com Boxing News Chris Eubank Jr., Eubank Jr. vs. Williams, Liam Williams 0
Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales – 5 February 2022
Chris Eubank Jr today got a small taste of the welcome which awaits him when he enters the dragon’s lair at Cardiff Motorpoint Arena tomorrow night to do battle with local hero Liam ‘The Machine’ Williams.
The two are headlining tomorrow’s night’s BOXXER card, co-promoted with Wasserman Boxing, and their fight airs live and exclusively across the UK on Sky Sports.
When Eubank entered the Assembly Room at Cardiff City Hall this afternoon for a final face-off with Williams, he was met with boos and hisses from the fans who had packed into the venue to support their countryman.
Those sounds will be amplified thousands of times over when Eubank makes his walk to the ring tomorrow night in front a sold-out arena, as most of the seats have been bought by Welsh fans who will be making their support for Williams vocally known.
As the two squared off today, Williams was keeping up a stream of inaudible but passionate invective. He and Eubank declined afterwards to reveal what had been said, but Williams did have a simple prediction to offer.
“I’m going to smash this guy to pieces. He’s getting done, bad.,” he said.
Eubank was more elaborate in his final comments on the eve of battle. He said that the bad blood between him and Williams would not result in him losing his temper in the ring and that he wants to send a message to the world’s middleweights with his performance tomorrow night.
“The talk is done, we’ve got 24 hours to go. I know what’s going to happen, the real boxing fans know what’s going to happen. It’s going to be a hell of a fight. [But] I’m a professional, there is no red mist – I’m thinking at all times and I’m doing what I need to do to win,“ he said.
“I’m going out there to make a big statement and the way that I’m going to do it will cause serious issues in the middleweight division. It will send a message to all the middleweight champions out there and then I’m coming for their belts.”
Also facing off today for the final time were Claressa Shields and Ema Kozin. Shields is defending her WBA, WBC, IBF, and The Ring female middleweight titles as she eyes a superfight showdown with arch-rival Savannah Marshall later this year.

Chris Eubank Jr
I didn’t spend a year and a half on a farm with chickens and snakes and raccoons training for nothing. We’re on our way to cleaning up the middleweight division and Liam Williams is the next man in front of me.
I’m going to take him out. All that matters is what’s going to happen on the night and that’s me standing over him and looking down and raising my fists as he gets counted out. It’s going to be a hell of a fight.
Liam Williams
It’s an unbelievable opportunity to fight here in Cardiff in such a high level fight against Chris. I’m just so excited to put an end to this guy, drop him down a few levels. You’ll realise his his level after this fight.
He’s mentally tough, he takes a good shot, but his his legs are very robotic. He moves like he’s got wooden legs. I just think my skill set is a lot better. We’re going to find out on a Saturday.
I believe I believe I’ve got the power to stop him and knock him out. Whether I will or not, I don’t know because it’s going to be one of them top fights it’s going to be it’s gonna be very intense, but I do hope to knock him out.
Roy Jones Jr, Trainer, Chris Eubank Jr
There’s a difference between good fighters and great fighters. When you can change those gears and go to that next level, that makes you a great fighter and that’s what I’ve seen in Chris Eubank Jr.
Ben Shalom, BOXXER CEO and founder
We are now days away from what has to be one of the British biggest British grudge matches we’ve seen in a long time. Everything is on the line for both fighters.
We know Chris has his world title ambitions very, very firmly in his head. But he must come through Liam Williams, and this fight is everything for him – imagine a fighter coming to his hometown in front of these Cardiff fans. No one can call it. Everyone is anticipating this fight. I can’t wait.
Kalle Sauerland, Wasserman Boxing, promoter of Chris Eubank Jr
It kicks off what is a fantastic February for British boxing. This is a fight that leads us to the next level, that level of the Golovkin’s, that level of the World Championships.
This is not looking past Liam, I think he’s gonna bring a very tough fight on Saturday night. I think it’s gonna be a treat for the fans. Chris is not afraid of the Dragon’s Lair and I think we’re going to see a grandstand performance.
Dmitry Salita, promoter, Claressa Shields
It’s a great honour to work with Sky Sports and BOXXER and Ben Shalom. It’s been a great experience and the reception of fans and the media has just been so much love and support for Claressa. We have a stern test ahead of us on Saturday night but I know that Claressa is going to be successful and put an explosive performance.
Claressa Shields
I want to thank God first, I want to thank everybody that’s here: my promoter Dimitri Salita, my manager Mark Taffett, my coaches. It’s been a really good camp and I’m excited to be here for multiple reasons.
And I’ll break it down for you quick: one, beat up Ema Kozin and then beat up your [UK] favourite Savannah Marshall and go home. That’s why I’m here. So February 5 is the beginning.

Boxen247.com Boxing News Chris Eubank Jr., Eubank Jr. vs. Williams, Liam Williams 0
Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales – 5 February 2022
Liam Williams and Chris Eubank Jr continued their war of words as they held their final press conference on Thursday ahead of this weekend’s highly-anticipated showdown.
The two men collide at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff on Saturday, on an event that will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Williams (23-3-1, 18 KOs) and Eubank Jr (31-2, 23 KOs) both had plenty to say as they spoke in front of the media, and they were each confident of earning the win.
Williams said: “This is an unbelievable opportunity to fight in Cardiff in a high level fight. I’m so excited to put an end to this guy and drop him down a few levels. He’ll realise his level after this fight.
“I’ve got a better skillset, and I punch harder than him. He’s tough and takes a good shot, but his legs and very robotic. Once the going gets tough he’ll revert to type, and we’ll find out on Saturday who the better man is.
“I’m super up for this fight. Chris doubts his ability as he’s put a rematch clause in. If I was going to fight somebody I thought I would blow out the water, I wouldn’t have a rematch clause. Depending how badly I beat him, he might want to take it, or he might not.
“I have the power to stop him. It will be an intense fight and a good one for the fans. I’ve prepared for a hard 12-round fight, but I do hope to knock him out.”
Eubank Jr said: “I didn’t spend a year and a half on a farm training hard for nothing. We’re on our way to world titles and to cleaning up the middleweight division. Williams is the next man in front of me and I’ll take him out.
“He’s talking about rematch clauses and this other stuff, business is business, none of that matters. All that matters is what will happen on the night, and that’s me standing over him, looking down and raising my fists as he gets counted out.
“We have the styles to make this an epic fight, and I can’t wait to get in there and prove the doubters wrong. We’ll see who has the better chin, better speed and better tactics. I don’t think he has the chin to withstand the punishment that is coming his way.
“I know what I can do and I know what I have done to guys that I believe are better than him, so in my mind I’ve already won the fight.”

Motorpoint Arena Cardiff, Wales – 5 February 2022
Following today’s announcement by the Welsh Government that indoor sports events can resume in Wales, BOXXER is pleased to announce that the long-awaited showdown between bitter rivals Chris Eubank Jr. (31-2, 23 KO’s) and Liam Williams (23-3-1, 18 KO’s), presented in association with Wasserman Boxing, will take place at the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff on Saturday, February 5, live and exclusively on Sky Sports.
An electrifying undercard packed with world champions, all-action contests and champions of the future will set the stage for a clash which will bring a years-long war of words to an explosive conclusion and determine which boxer is the UK’s #1 middleweight.
Two-time Olympic gold medallist Claressa ‘GWOAT’ Shields (11-0, 2 KO’s) makes her UK debut as chief support to the main event, defending her WBA, WBC and IBF World Middleweight Championships against undefeated WBF World Middleweight Champion Ema Kozin (21-0-1, 11 KO’s).
Following a stellar amateur career in which she became World Youth Olympic Champion and won the European Youth Championships an astonishing four times, 21-year-old prospect Caroline Dubois follows her older brother Daniel into the professional ranks and aims to make her mark.
Having won his title by way of a stunning sixth-round body-shot stoppage of Darren Tetley last year, English Welterweight Champion Samuel ‘True Sensation’ Antwi (13-1, 6 KO’s) travels from Stockwell, London to make the first defence of his belt. An all-action war is expected when he faces Wolverhampton’s Conah Walker (10-0-1, 3 KO’s), who demolished Jack Ewbank in the first round of their contest in October.
Proud Welshman and former British and Commonwealth Champion Chris ‘Rock ‘n’ Rolla’ Jenkins (22-4-3, 8 KO’s) heads to his nation’s capital from his hometown of Garnant as he faces former Unified World Champion Julius Indongo (23-4, 12 KO’s) in a massive welterweight showdown. Indongo’s last visit on these shores in April 2017 saw him relieve Ricky Burns of his world titles at his Glasgow fortress and will hold no fear facing Jenkins in front of his fierce fan base.
Fast-rising Welsh hot shot Rhys Edwards (11-0, 4 KO’s) looks to maintain his undefeated run and make his countrymen proud in an eight-round super-bantamweight contest against experienced Russian Ruslan Berchuk (13-13, 4 KO’s). The 21-year-old, from Penygraig, is trained by former world champion Gary Lockett and has been heralded as one of the best up-and-coming prospects in the sport.
Giant Geordie Steve Robinson, last seen dismantling Reece Barlow in just 82 seconds back in November, heads down from Newcastle on a mission to add another stunning knockout to his highlight reel. With three jaw-dropping finishes in his four-fight career, the power-punching heavyweight has no intention of going the distance with Shane Gill.
Harlem Eubank (12-0, 4 KO’s), cousin of headline draw Chris Eubank Jr and also part of the Wasserman Boxing stable, adds to the family business on fight night. The Sussex Super Lightweight returns to action following an impressive stoppage win over Nika Nakashidze in Riga, Latvia on October 16 and will be looking to extend his unbeaten record in Cardiff.
