Her semi-final opponent was the Philippines’ defending champion Josie Gabuco who won also the Best Woman Boxer Trophy in Bangkok two years ago.

The 22-year-old Uzbek talent used an aggressive attacking style against the technician Filipino veteran and surprised Gabuco. Sultonalieva had fantastic effectiveness in the contest which shocked her opponent who had to step on the gas in the second part of the bout. The Filipino landed a few nice hooks, however, Sultonalieva’s celebrated the overall success. The Indian knew her opponent and she used better tactical responses in the second round and won their tough bout by split decision.

“There are not so many international competitions, therefore, I decided to attend the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Dubai. I competed in the Boxam Tournament in Spain two months ago and since then I trained at home in India but many of my sparring partners have been tested positive. If you win, you don’t have to overestimate the success, just continue your hard work. I am not overconfident and looking forward my final against the well-known Kazakh boxer,” commented Mary Kom.
