Undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney skilfully defended his titles with a masterly performance at the Rod Laver Arena, in Melbourne defeating brave and resolute George Kambosos Jr in a more exciting fight than their previous encounter.

“The Dream” had another dominant performance and won cards by 119-109, 118-110 and 118-110 to retain the World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight super championship and the IBF, WBO and WBC titles.

George´s record is now 20-2, 10 KO´s, while Devin remains undefeated at 29-0, 15 KO`s. Before the fight, Devin had predicted that George would try to cut the distance and be appreciably more aggressive, and so it proved.

In the end it was another brilliant performance from Haney, who reasserted himself as the 135-pound king and a top among today’s pound-for-pound fighters.

Devin “The Dream” Haney (28-0, 15 KOs) became the undisputed lightweight champion of the world by outclassing George “Ferocious” Kambosos Jr. (20-1, 10 KOs) en route to a 12-round unanimous decision in front of 41,129 fans on Sunday afternoon at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.

Haney unified his WBC championship with Kambosos’ WBA/WBO/IBF and Ring Magazine lightweight titles. With two scores of 116-112 and one score of 118-110, he became the eighth fighter in history to capture all four major championship titles in the four-belt era and the first to do so at 135 pounds.

Prior to the fight, Haney felt as if all the odds were stacked against him. He came in as the challenger, fighting on enemy territory in a stadium full of people wishing and hoping to see him lose. It even appeared as if his father would not be able to be in his corner for the fight.

But, if Bill Haney’s eleventh-hour entry into Australia indicated anything, it was that today belonged to Devin, and nothing would prevent his victory.

Indeed, though both men initiated the bout with firm, confident jabs, it was Haney’s superior boxing skills that allowed him to find his rhythm by the third and fourth rounds. Kambosos’ right hand seemed to be a factor early, but Haney’s footwork, his ability to smother and clinch on the inside, and even the way he would stop the former champion in his tracks with a stiff jab, prevented Kambosos from landing any significant punches.

By the final rounds, Haney had nullified Kambosos’ offense to such a degree that he could even take the gas off the pedal in the 12th round and cruise to a decision win.

Haney said, “This is a dream come true. I was going through it without my dad being here because I knew it was a big moment for us. We both dreamed of this. Since we started out, we said we wanted to be the best. It would have hurt me to accomplish this without him. I’m so thankful that we were able to accomplish this together.

“I was comfortable. I was just sticking to the game plan. The game plan was to go there and hit and not get hit, and I did that for the majority of the fight. I took the last round off just because I knew I was comfortably ahead, but I fought a good, smart fight.”

“I handicapped him of his best things. He wanted to land the overhand right, and he wanted to land the big left hook. I handicapped him. I was fighting both ways. When I would go to the left, I would fight his right hand. When I would go to the right, I would fight his left hook. And he couldn’t hit me with neither one of them.”

“I want to thank George Kambosos and all of Australia for coming out. Thank you, George, for giving me the shot. All of these so-called champions would not give me my shot. But George was a true champion, and he gave me my shot. Thank you for this.

Kambosos said, “This was amazing for the sport. It was amazing for the country. At the end of the day, I wanted to take the best and hardest tests. I’m going to give him full respect after his victory today. Let him have his time, and we’ll do it again. I have to implement a few things, but I thought the fight was very close. I’m not going to wreck his moment. I’ll let him have his moment. Last November, my moment was wrecked, so let him have his moment, and I’ll see you again real soon.

“I landed the right hand a few times. I worked it to the body, but he had a smart game plan. He grabbed and held a lot and did what he had to do to win. That’s what it’s about. You do what you have to do to win, and today they gave him the decision, but I’m sure it will change when we get it on again. Respect to him, and respect to boxing. This is boxing. You fight the best. Win, lose or draw. This is what it’s all about. F*** protecting records.  I’ve always been about fighting the best. I gave him a shot, and we’ll do it again.”

Most of the trash talk is over. It is nearly time. WBO/IBF/WBA lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. (20-0, 10 KOs) and WBC champion Devin Haney (27-0, 15 KOs) are two days away from their showdown for the undisputed title at Marvel Stadium. The fight, Sunday local time and airing Saturday evening in the United States, is one of the biggest bouts ever on Australian soil.

More than 40,000 fans are expected, as the 23-year-old Haney attempts to make history more than 8,000 miles from home. Kambosos, from Sydney, Australia, is back home and attempting to score his second straight upset following last November’s title-winning thriller over Teofimo Lopez.

In the 10-round co-feature, Australian two-time bantamweight title challenger Jason “Mayhem” Moloney will battle Filipino standout Aston Palicte. The ESPN-televised opener will be a 10-round battle of big men between New Zealand-born heavyweight Junior Fa and Australian Lucas Browne. Kambosos-Haney, Moloney-Palicte and Fa-Browne will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+ (7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT).

At Thursday’s press conference, this is what the fighters had to say.

George Kambosos Jr.

“It has been a long, hard journey. Everyone knows that, but I’m ready for Sunday. All the tough moments have gotten me ready for Sunday, and I will shock the world again. Underdog? Beautiful. We are ready.”

“I’ve been through it all, so whatever comes to the table on Sunday, we’ll be ready. We’ll be fully prepared. We are warriors. Whatever way we have to go, we are prepared.”

On the mental warfare against Haney

“I’m just having fun. I’m enjoying the moment. I’m just talking the truth. If it has or hasn’t affected him, so be it. We’ll step in there on Sunday, and that’s where it matters.”

“I have visualized victory by any means. I have manifested everything, every part of this journey. They said that we would never be here, but only two people really believed it, me and my father. So, I manifested my victory, and I visualize victory by any means on Sunday.”

“I’m 43 years old. I’ve got three or four more fights to go. I want to solidify my career, and I want to take good fights. I don’t want to take a fight where I’m just there to roll someone over. Junior Fa and Joseph Parker have been on the radar for many years. Obviously, it’s a good little rivalry between Australia and New Zealand. So, for me, it makes sense that I fight Junior now.”

Jason Mallia predicts “one hell of a fight” between Devin Haney and George Kambosos Jr. having sparred the American in the build-up.

Australian welterweight Mallia was called into the Haney camp last month to help the WBC lightweight champion prepare for his undisputed showdown with Kambosos on June 5 in Melbourne.

The 27-year-old, unbeaten in three fights as a professional, says Haney was “sharp”, carried a “super-fast” jab and was exceptionally accurate.

Mallia impressed Haney and his team over two spars – “they liked the fact I made him think” – and though he wants countryman Kambosos to win, he has first-hand experience of the sizeable task that awaits.

“He’s got a super-fast jab,” Mallia said.

“I carry myself on reading punches very well, but he’s got a super-fast jab. His cornerman was calling it the ‘million dollar jab’.

“He’s lightning fast, and he picks his shots very well.”

“Devin Haney is very sharp; he picks his shots very well. When he throws three shots, two of them land, he’s very accurate, he’s pinpoint,” he added.

“Being an Aussie boy, I’d love to see the Australian win but having this experience of sparring Devin, I just believe it’s going to be one hell of a fight and regardless of who wins, it’s going to be fantastic for boxing.”

Mallia scored a first round KO win in early May and had yet to return to full training when he got the surprise call to spar Haney.

But an “opportunity like this” was too good to turn down and the five-time national amateur champion quickly ditched all other plans.

“These guys were the ultimate professionals, and when I walked into the gym, he was sitting in the ring getting a massage from his masseuse,” said Mallia.

“But he is a very, very humble guy, he welcomed me with open arms. He came out to me straightaway, and we had a good chat and then we warmed up and I got asked to do five rounds.

“I did well and post sparring, he got out of the ring and told me that he wanted me to do some more spars while he was down here.  I was very humbled to get the opportunity to work with Devin, he is world class and for me to get called back it was reassuring to know that I could mix it with some of the top dogs.”

World Boxing Council lightweight champion Devin Haney achieved another stylish  title defense this Saturday after defeating Joseph Diaz by unanimous decision at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada.

It was a competitive  fight. However, Haney worked towards victory, which allowed him to remain undefeated as a professional and also retain the Green  and Gold belt.

The Judges cards read: 117-111, 117-111, 116-112.

At the end of the fight, JoJo acknowledged his rival’s triumph and showed him his respect following what was just his second defeat as a professional boxer.

Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz says that people are sleeping on his speed, power and skills as he prepares to challenge Devin Haney for the WBC World Lightweight title at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday December 4, live worldwide on DAZN.

Diaz Jr. (32-1-1 15KOs) bids to become a two-weight World champion in Sin City, having previously come out on top in a Matchroom vs. Golden Boy fight when he took the IBF Super-Featherweight title from Tevin Farmer in Miami in January 2020.

The 29 year old landed the interim WBC strap in his first fight at 135lbs in July against Javier Fortuna, and now takes on another big task in the shape of the undefeated green and gold belt holder Haney (26-0 15 KOs).

Diaz, Jr. has a clear edge in experience over the 23 year old champion, with the 2012 Olympian having 101 more pro rounds under his belt than Haney, but Diaz, Jr. says that wisdom isn’t the only thing that gives his the edge over the defending king.

“Experience will be a key factor in my victory, but my power, speed and boxing ability are important too and I think that they are being underestimated,” said Diaz Jr. “I’m a 2012 Olympian, I’ve been a World champion, I’ve boxed great fighters and I’ve paid my dues to get here. I’m here for a reason and from my hard work, and that’s going to be the difference.

“Devin is an elusive and smart defensive fighter, but I don’t feel he has the experience that I have. He has good range, and he uses his jab to keep on the outside, but it’s nothing I haven’t seen before, I’ve seen multiple styles in the ring and whatever he brings, I’ll adapt.

“I feel that he’s the kind of guy that doesn’t have confidence in himself and he needs people around him to boost, build and gain his confidence. Me – I am self-confident, self-motivated, I know what I am doing and what I am capable of, and I am going to get him out of there.”

Devin Haney will fulfil a dream on Saturday night as he headlines at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, defending his WBC World Lightweight title against interim champion Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz, Jr. on Saturday night, live worldwide on DAZN.

Haney (26-0 15 KOs) puts his title on the line for the fourth time and is in back-to-back fight in his Las Vegas hometown for the first time since stepping through the ropes in Sin City for the fifth and sixth times as a pro in 2016.

‘The Dream’s’ fifth paid night in the ring was in the MGM Grand Garden Arena on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s clash with Timothy Bradley in April, but now he’s the star attraction at the famed boxing mecca.

Diaz, Jr. (32-1-1 15 KOs) is out to dash Haney’s plans to be the new main attraction of the Las Vegas boxing scene, but while Haney acknowledges that this promises to be the hardest fight of his career to date, he also promises to dazzle under the bright lights.

“This is a dream come true to be living in Las Vegas and headlining the MGM Grand,” said Haney. “I never thought that it would come this fast, but it’s here and now it’s time for me to really perform at this great arena and show that I am here to stay.

“It’s going to be great to be back in front of fans in full force, there might not be anywhere better than the MGM Grand for a big fight, I’m so excited for this. I know what I am up against, and I am ready for it and the fans should be too.

“JoJo is a good fighter, he’s going to come to fight, we know that. He’s going to bring his best, I’m bringing mine. So, the best man will win – and that will be me. You can talk about size and heart, but I just feel that I am a better fighter than him and skills pay the bills.

“When fighters want to fight, it gets done. Sometimes the networks and the politics get in the way, but nine times out of ten, you can make any fighter as the fighters have the power.

“Everybody says ‘I’m gonna bang Devin out’. I’ve been seeing that my whole life. Did I get this far by letting people rough me up or bang me out? Come on. I can do everything, so you can do whatever you want, it’s not going to work. I don’t know how you beat me; I can’t tell you.”

WBC Interim Lightweight World Champion, Joseph “JoJo” Diaz (32-1-1, 15 KOs), hosted a media call today, Tuesday, November 16 to talk about his upcoming bout with WBC Lightweight World Champion, Devin “The Dream” Haney (26-0, 15 KOs) on December 4 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, live worldwide on DAZN.

Below is what the fighter had to say to the media members in attendance.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA:

“Devin Haney vs. Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz, Jr is one of the best lightweight match-ups that can take place now. We feel strongly that Jojo is more than ready, he is prepared, he is focused. His last fight was an amazing showing of what a true champion is all about.

Not only did he display power but he had the speed, intelligence, the IQ was through the roof. I’m very proud that he will be fighting another great world champion.

Like I have said before: styles make fights and Jojo has a perfect style, the perfect mentality to upset, and beat the great world champion, Devin Haney.”

JOSEPH ‘JOJO’ DIAZ, JR:

“This is a really, really big fight on December 4th, live in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. I’m really looking forward to it. I am having a really tremendous training camp. I just feel like at 135 pounds I am someone to be reckoned with.

I’m very, very dangerous at this weight. My preparation has been phenomenal both physically and mentally. I’m ready and I’m prepared for this moment in my life. I feel like this is an opportunity of a lifetime and I’m not going to take it for granted.

“Devin Haney is one hell of a fighter, don’t get me wrong, he has great tools and he has great boxing skills, but so do I. I’m a 2012 Olympian, I’m a two-weight division champion, I’ve fought multiple, multiple guys that have had experience inside the professional ranks; and I just know that all that experience will be showcased come December 4th.

I’m really looking forward to putting on a great performance for myself, my family, my son, and all the fight fans. Come December 4th, I will be crowned ‘And The New’ world champion.

“I was already pushing for both of those fights, Ryan Garcia or Devin Haney. I just wanted to make the best fight for myself and whatever opportunity was created that was big for my moment I really had to capitalize on it.

So now that, unfortunately, Ryan Garcia ended up pulling out due to a hand injury Devin Haney was right on the list and he is the next victim. I am glad that he was able to accept the fight and we all agreed on terms, and here we are, fighting December 4th.

“My strength and my endurance are what feels different at 135 pounds. At 130 I was depleting my body, depleting my muscles, and not only that, it was just taking a lot out by trying to make that weight.

I feel like now I don’t have to deplete myself. I don’t have to lose that extra five pounds and my body now feels more relaxed and more comfortable at 135.

I feel a lot more energized. I feel a lot stronger. I feel like my speed, my reaction time in the ring is just more snappy. I felt like that with the Javier Fortuna fight. It was my first fight at 135 pounds and I felt good.

That fight was probably one of the best performances in my career, but come December 4th you guys are going to see a very, very exciting and different transformed fighter. I’m really looking forward to putting on a great performance.”

Unbeaten superstar Haney (26-0 15 KOs) puts his crown on the line for the fourth time and the second in a row in his Las Vegas backyard, having seen off the challenge of former three weight World ruler Jorge ‘El Niño Del Oro’ Linares in a thrilling clash in May at Mandalay Bay. ‘The Dream’ now returns to the Vegas strip for what promises to be a barnburner as his rivalry with Diaz, Jr. hits boiling point.

Diaz (32-1-1 15 KOs) claimed the WBC Interim World Lightweight title on his debut at 135lbs, beating former World champion Javier Fortuna in one of the best performances of his 34-fight career. The 28 year old delivered on his promise to excite at Lightweight with that win and also chase the big names in the division. He now gets the chance to become a two-weight World champion having ripped the IBF Super-Featherweight title from Tevin Farmer in Miami in January 2020.

“I was born to be great, so these are the moments I get up for,” said Haney. “I learned a lot from my last fight it made me a more dangerous fighter. You guys can expect a ton of excitement and explosion in this fight!”

Newly-crowned IBO Lightweight World Champion Maxi Hughes has signed a multi-fight promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

In the form of his life, Yorkshire’s Hughes (24-5-2, 5 KOs) upset the odds to outclass Jovanni Straffon over 12 rounds at Emerald Headingley Stadium in Leeds on Saturday to wrestle the IBO 135lbs crown from the heavy-handed Mexican.

Many thought Straffon’s power would be a key factor, but ‘Maximus’ looked the more powerful out of the pair as he came so close to forcing a stoppage in round five, eventually taking the fight with wide scores of 120-107, 120-107 and 119-109 on the judges’ cards.

Hughes has now won the WBC International, British and IBO Lightweight Titles in his four fights since lockdown, being the better underdog in three of them, and the 31-year-old who is trained by Sean O’Hagan and managed by Stefy Bull has his sights set on a showdown with undefeated WBC Lightweight World Champion Devin Haney.

“Matchroom have provided so many opportunities for fighters, past and present, and to know those opportunities will be heading my way is all I could ask for,” said Hughes. “The victory wasn’t a surprise, not to me anyway, given the preparation I’d put in and the time we had spent tailoring our approach to deal with someone like Straffon. But to win every round and to feel that comfortable feels pretty epic in front of a Yorkshire crowd.

“It’s a pleasure to share a card with that amount of boxing talent and the fact that people think my performance stole the show feels unreal. I’m just glad I got to showcase my skills and make my team and family proud. I only spend a short time reflecting after any fight with Sean and the team, but after that I move on and we agree what step we take next. I’ll reflect properly on my achievements when I retire. I don’t intend to get too drunk on my own success.

“I’ve been on the domestic scene since Scotty Cardle and I fought him back in 2013. I’ve mixed it with the best British and European talent that was there at the time. Boxing careers don’t last forever so my hope is that Matchroom can deliver bigger fights than any of those I’ve had so far, to capitalise on my recent success.

“I’ve already spoken about Devin Haney simply because his opponents seems to be evading him. I might not be the ‘name’ he wants, but I’m game and willing to fight. If that doesn’t come off, then I’m only looking forward in the rankings. I’ll take whatever comes my way.”

World Boxing Council lightweight champion Devin Haney defeated legendary Venezuelan fighter, Jorge Linares, holding his boxing together after a late scare.

The fight held at Mandalay Bay’s Michelob ULTRA Arena was etched with late drama. Haney took the unanimous decision victory, but the 23-year-old American had to dig deep to defend his WBC crown.

Devin Haney had ample control on the first half of the match using slick movement and his quickness to repeatedly connect on  Linares; however, Linares, in the last rounds, showed why he is a historical multi-champion and hurt  his rival at the end of round 10 with a massive right hand impact.

Haney had to be resourceful in the eleventh and twelfth, holding on for dear life to avoid a repeat dose.

The fight went all the way and the judges ruled 116-112, 116-112 and 115-113, all in favor of the still champion, Devin Haney.

After passing this complicated test, Haney agreed  to face the best of the division: “If Teofimo is next, let’s do it.” He stated.

Devin Haney improved his undefeated record to 26 wins with 15 KOs, while Linares came out of the ring with a professional record of 47 wins with 29 KOs and 6 losses.

After defeating Jorge Linares by unanimous decision over 12 rounds, Devin Haney spoke about the fight in which he decided to mix it up more as opposed to the hit and run tactics that lead to negative press and fan criticism.

This change of tactics made for a more exciting fight, to the point of being tagged hard by Linares at the end of the tenth round.

“The fans want to see that,” said Haney. “They want to see if I can go in there and walk my opponent down. Hit him with big shots. I showed I can do it all, I can box, I can bang, I can take a shot and face adversity and get the job done.

“It was a good shot, but I wasn’t hurt, sometimes when you get hit by a good shot, you have to be smart, continue the game plan, and I did that and got the win.

“I knew he was going to come here and give it everything, it was a huge opportunity for him, he would be willing to get knocked out to go for the win, take my biggest shots to get this title.

“I just kept smart, used the jabs, feinted and landed shots in the 12th round. You are going to get hit with big shots in boxing. I didn’t get dropped. I didn’t get hurt. You see fighters get dropped and get up from big shots and people praise them, I didn’t get dropped, I stayed on my feet, kept throwing shots and closed it out.

“I want to fight the best, I stayed focused on Jorge this week, I knew he was a tough competitor, and I got the job done with the game plan. If Teofimo Lopez wants to do it next, let’s do it for all the belts, the real undisputed.”

Devin Haney retained his WBC world Lightweight title in a thrilling fight with Jorge Linares at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas, NV, live on DAZN.

Haney (26-0 15 KOs) sparkled from the start with his trademark skills, speed and elusiveness seeing the champion start strongly over former three-weight World champion, with bodywork smartly invested and uppercuts accurate and flashy.

Haney had to show he has a chin to accompany the ability, with Linares (47-6 29 KOs) always dangerous and in the fight, showing flashes of lethal intent that Haney absorbed and evade – until a dramatic ending in the tenth.

Linares delivered a three-punch combination that wobbled Haney right on the bell of the tenth round, that saw a staggering Haney unsteady on his way back to his corner. Haney stayed away from the Venezuelan in the final two sessions as the 35 year old went in for the kill, and the judges gave the champion the nod on the cards 116-112, 116-112 and 115-113.

Chantelle Cameron (14-0 7 KOs) dazzled on her Las Vegas debut by destroying Melissa Hernandez in the first defense of her WBC World Super-Lightweight title. Cameron said she wanted to shine in Sin City and the Briton did just that, coming out of the blocks with equal parts speed and spite, and her aggressive approach was first rewarded in the fourth round, when a barrage of punches nearly put Hernandez through the ropes, and then the referee stepped in to halt the contest in the fifth with the challenger under more fire.

Azinga Fuzile (15-1 9 KOs) will be fighting for a World title in his next outing after turning in a fine performance to stop Martin J. Ward in seven rounds. A slow-burning opening caught fire in the fourth round when Fuzile put Ward down in fourth from check right-hook. Ward was then cut from a headclash in the seventh round, appeared to be injured to the left knee, and then a huge right hand floored the Briton and he was pulled out by the corner.

Jason Quigley (18-1 14 KOs) and Shane Mosley Jr (17-3 10 KOs) served up ten toe-to-toe rounds for the WBO-NABO Middleweight title, and it was Quigley that edged a keenly fought battle via majority decision, 95-95, 97-93, 96-94.

Khalil Coe (1-0 1 KO) showed he’s going to be a handful for his opponents and a big hit with the fans as he kicked off life in the paid ranks with a second round KO, following two knockdowns from bodyshots in his first pro round with another brutal left hand to the midsection to end matters in the second.

Reshat Mati (10-0 7 KOs) got some valuable rounds against game late-replacement Ryan Pino before the main card commenced, with their fan-friendly six round action going the distance and the New Yorker getting the verdict on the cards, 60-54, 58-56 and 58-56.

Ramla Ali (3-0) enjoyed her Las Vegas debut with a shut-out six round win over Mikayla Nebel while Amari Jones (2-0 1 KO) kicked off the night with a first round KO win in his second pro outing.

Mature Jorge, who had a great training camp at the Teiken Boxing Gym, the most representative boxing gym in Japan since 1926, has not fought for more than a year, but after having tested positive for coronavirus, he is fully recovered and ready for this great commitment.

This Friday both warriors passed the official weigh-in. Haney logged 135 pounds, while Linares scaled at 134 pounds.

This Thursday both warriors were face to face in a smooth and stubble press conference prior to this intriguing contest.

Devin aged 22, holds an undefeated record of 25-0-0 with 15 KOs and is one of the finest current fighters. In his most recent fight, he defeated former Cuban world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa by unanimous decision in twelve rounds.

Jorge aged 35, has come through a great preparation with flying colours, at the Teiken Boxing Gym, the most representative boxing gym in Japan since 1926. He has not fought for more than a year, after having tested positive for coronavirus. He is fully recovered and ready for this extraordinary commitment.

 Devin Haney will defend his World Boxing Council lightweight crown against former multi champion Jorge Linares this Saturday at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 22-year-old has built an undefeated record of 25-0-0 with 15 KOs. Devin moved from a young age to Las Vegas with his family. The first time he entered a gym was when he was seven years old. His father took him after a tussle at school, in order to channel his brimming energies plus latent talent.  It proved a crucial step in forming a future world champion.

Back then, his immediate future lay in Mexico, once the State of California denied him his license at the age of 17. He starred in his first fights in the north of Mexico and we can find some of his first fights on YouTube.

The Mexican influence was such that his father has commented: “We went Tijuana for boxing. We know the spirit, and the energy it signifies. We grew up in the Bay Area (of San Francisco), and we have Hispanic friends with whom we grew up. as neighbours. They stand up for what they represent. So I have deep respect for the Hispanic community and for Mexicans.”

Devin also has a history with Floyd Mayweather. The young man who sparred him, also had the opportunity to have received valuable advice from the legendary boxing sage.

Jorge Linares has warned Devin Haney that he is stepping up to a whole new level as he prepares to challenge the WBC World Lightweight champion on Saturday May 29 at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV, live worldwide on DAZN, in association with Golden Boy Promotions.
Former three-weight world king Linares (47-5 29 KOs) is looking to kickstart the latest chapter of his storied career by picking up the WBC belt that he owned in 2014 to 2016 from Haney (25-0 15 KOs).

The 22 year old champion has admitted that the Venezuelan star is the toughest fight of his career and has vowed to prove that he’s the man to beat at 135lbs, but Linares believes that he has the goods to end the rising star’s title reign and return to the summit on Saturday.

“It’s a big fight and a new challenge for me,” said Linares. “I have a lot of respect for Devin. He’s a young guy, a World champion, but on Saturday the respect goes, and I am ready for an amazing fight, and I hope he’s ready too. He knows who he is fighting – a four-time World champion. I have a lot of experience and that’s the most important thing in this fight to win the fight. He doesn’t have that. He has talent, he has youth and hunger, and the belt.

“A fight with me is a different level. I can show so many styles, I’m naturally fast and strong, I don’t have a lot of KOs, but he knows I can punch. I think he will run all night, but I will be waiting for him, I will follow him. If he wants to fight inside, I am ready for him. He’s going to have big problems on Saturday night, he knows I can do everything, and he knows I have to timing to put him down.

“I know his style, I trained with him a long time ago in Vegas and we did some sparring. He was a baby then! But he’s a champion now and I hope he’s ready for a tough fight.

“I don’t need to say anything about what he’s said. I just think about myself and what I need to do, not what he says or does. I don’t like to talk too much, I don’t need to talk to get fans or followers or anything, I just need to go out and do my job and put on a great fight.”

Linares’ clash with Haney tops a stacked card of action in Sin City, as Chantelle Cameron (13-0 7 KOs) will defend her WBC World Super-Lightweight title against Melissa Hernandez  (23-7-3 7 KOs) in more World title action.

Chantelle Cameron plans to shine in Las Vegas and punish trash-talking challenger Melissa Hernandez when she defends her WBC World Super-Lightweight title on Saturday May 29 at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay, live worldwide on DAZN.
Cameron (13-0 7 KOs) makes the first defense of the title that she won in October in a clash that was due to take place in March, but the Briton suffered whiplash from a car accident during training camp and the fight had to be pushed back.

Cameron says Hernandez (23-7-2 7 KOs) doubted that the injury was legitimate, which has lit a fire inside the champion, who wants to put the Puerto Rican away in style – but she won’t get reckless as the Northampton, England ace wants to cement her place at the top table before targeting her domestic rivals in huge dust-ups back home.

“She’s just a hype job, she chat’s shit saying I pulled out because I wasn’t ready and the injury was a lie,” said Cameron. “Listen, if I wasn’t ready and was making excuses, I could have just said I had COVID instead of a car crash. Who lies about having a car crash? That’s just stupid.

“That has put a bit of fire in me and I’m glad, because it’s given me an extra hunger and I will make her eat her words because she’s nothing to be scared of. She’s a trash talker, I’m not, I do my business in the ring. Let her do her thing and I’ll do mine, but as soon as that bell goes, I’ll turn savage.

“It’d be lovely to stop her, and if I do that, I want it to be a proper stoppage, not the referee stepping in, I want to stop her on her feet. But I’m not looking for it, Jamie Moore and Nigel Travis have been amazing with my tactics, so I am not going to go in there and ruin my plan. She’s a tricky opponent, she’s slippery, smart, experienced, and if I go in there looking for a KO she could nick it on points, and that’s not happening, that belt is coming back home with me.

“We don’t overlook anyone, I’m not disrespectful and I’m zoned in on her. I have to get through Melissa, she’s tough, but I feel my journey isn’t stopping here, it’s going forward. I refuse to lose. Whatever it takes, I will do it to win, because I know what the future can hold for me if I perform well and win.

“Lose, I go back to the drawing-board, and I can’t think about that. I want to be in the big fights, Katie Taylor, Natasha Jonas, Terri Harper, Shannon Courtenay, Ebanie Bridges, all those fights, because I don’t feel like I have had my moments yet.”

This Saturday night in Las Vegas, Jorge Linares will challenge WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney in one of the most anticipated matches of recent months.

Haney, who is coming off a decision win over Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa, is looking to add another notable name to his record.

Linares (47-5, 29 KOs) has been out of the ring since February of last year, when he knocked out Carlos Morales in four rounds.

The multiple champion has won two fights in a row since a surprise loss to Mexican Pablo César Cano.

Last year, Linares was scheduled to face Javier Fortuna, but the fight fell apart when Jorge contracted COVID-19.

“I was infected with the coronavirus, but now I am 100% recovered. I continued in the gym. I’ve never stopped, I’ve always been busy. It is impressive how many sparring sessions

“I have already done without being able to fight. But I would not call this time out of the ring inactivity, ” Linares said in an interview with journalist Jorge Ebro.

“I have a lot of experience and now I feel that the teacher is going to teach the student. This is a great fight and I feel very positive about this tremendous opportunity.

“He will not be an easy rival, because nobody is. Haney’s style is clean, pretty. I don’t know if he is going to be a warrior with me, but I hope we have a very good fight, obviously there will only be one winner and it will be me”.

Recently, WBC Interim Lightweight Champion Ryan Garcia notified the WBC that he was taking a leave from boxing to address ongoing health issues.  The WBC fully and unconditionally supports Champion Garcia.  The WBC will stay close to him during his process, and the WBC Board of Governors will assess his situation once he is ready to return to the ring.

The WBC has received a request to sanction the bout between the #2-rated Lightweight Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna (36-2-1, 25 KOs) against the #5-rated Super Featherweight contender Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz (31-1-1, 15 KOs) for the WBC Interim World Lightweight Championship.  The Fortuna v. Diaz bout is scheduled to take place on July 9, 2021, in Los Angeles, California.

A recount of the backdrop that led to Javier Fortuna’s request puts that request into the proper context.

  • In December of 2019,  Javier Fortuna reached the #1 position in the WBC Lightweight World Ratings.
  • The then WBC World Lightweight Champion Devin Haney became unable to defend his title due to a shoulder injury, which prompted the WBC to name him WBC Champion In-Recess, thus rendering vacant the WBC World Lightweight Championship.
  • The WBC then ordered a bout between #1 Javier Fortuna and the then #2 Luke Campbell for the vacant WBC World Lightweight Championship.  That bout was contracted and scheduled to take place in April of 2020.
  • Due the COVID-19 pandemic the Fortuna v. Campbell bout did not take place, which gave Champion In-Recess Devin Haney sufficient time to recover from his injury.
  • Champion In-Recess Devin Haney petitioned to the WBC to be reinstated as World Champion in light of his recovery.  The WBC granted that petition as well as a voluntary defense of his title.
  • The WBC also agreed to sanction the Fortuna vs Campbell bout for the WBC Interim Lightweight World Championship, due to the fact they had entered into a contract to  fight for The WBC  Championship.
  • Subsequently, Campbell’s promoter Matchroom requested that the WBC sanction Champion Haney’s voluntary defense to be against #2 Luke Campbell.  That bout never took place.
  • Javier Fortuna was then scheduled to face former multi-time world champion and #3-rated Jorge Linares.  That bout was supposed to take place in August of 2020.
  • Linares contracted Covid-19 a few weeks before his bout against Fortuna, which resulted in that bout being cancelled.
  • In November of 2020, Fortuna stopped Antonio Lozada in six rounds.
  • Fortuna was then scheduled to fight the then WBC Interim World Champion Ryan Garcia.  That bout would have taken place in July of 2021, but was cancelled due to Champion Garcia’s ongoing medical issues.

In light of the fact that Javier Fortuna has not been able to compete for a WBC Championship due to reasons outside his control, and based on the merits of his request, the WBC has decided to grant it.  Accordingly, the WBC will sanction the Javier Fortuna v. Jo Jo Diaz bout for the WBC Interim World Lightweight Championship. The winner will fight the winner of Haney vs Linares.

Haney (25-0, 18 KOs) puts his title on the line for the third time against the former multiple division world champion, Linares (47-5, 29 KOs), and ‘The Dream’, who is entering the last week of training camp, talks about his matchup with Linares, what a win will do for his career, fighting at home, and more.

“It’s been a great eight-week camp. I started in Las Vegas, got some light sparring, then travelled to the Bay Area. I spent three weeks training with Victor Conte and Remi Korchemny at SNAC. The remaining weeks, I’ve been in Las Vegas, getting great sparring work with local pros that have been pushing me hard. I’m ready! The world will see, I’m the best fighter on the planet.

“Linares is a great fighter that has a lot left in the tank. He has held multiple world championships in three weight classes and he’s by far the biggest step up in my career. I give my dad Bill Haney, who is my trainer, a lot of credit, we know exactly what it takes to get this done on May 29th. My skills are on another level and I will make the necessary adjustments, wear him down and completely dominate this fight.

“This is the biggest fight of my career. A victory against Linares should gain me a lot of respect. Everyone knows that Linares is a dangerous fighter and winning this fight gives more reasons to all of the writers, fans, and boxing insiders, to campaign the unification fight with Teófimo López, or at the very least, a world title defense against Ryan Garcia. I’m putting the pressure on them.

“Las Vegas is where I currently reside. I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to fight in front of my family and friends. I’ve only fought in Vegas a couple of times, way back in 2016, before I became a world champion. I’m 100% ready to show up and show out. Las Vegas is the mecca of boxing’s biggest shows and for me this is just the beginning. At the other end of the spectrum, there’s a professional debut on the card for Eddie Hearn’s latest American signing, Khalil Coe, Reshat Mati (9-0 7 KOs) enters double figures in the pro game on the card, Ramla Ali (2-0) has been impressive in her two fights since turning pro in October and the first pro female fighter from Somalia gets an introduction to American fight fans on the bill, a card that is rounded off by Devin Haney Promotions’ Darren Cunningham (13-0 7 KOs) continuing his pro rise.

Boxing is back and to close a month full of world-class boxing activity, the World Boxing Council lightweight champion, American Devin Haney (25-0, 15 KOs), will face the three-time Venezuelan world champion, Jorge Linares (47-5, 29 KOs), on May 29 at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, on a card that will be broadcast on DAZN. 

Haney is getting ready at the Victor Conte SNAC training facility in California, where he has commented some aspects of this important commitment:

“The first time I came to SNAC, I was in training camp with Shawn Porter. I was fourteen back then, I mean, as time went on, I started to know Victor more and more.

 Training at SNAC is the complete package, recovery, vitamins, track training, weight reduction protocol all rolled into one, and that’s what makes me strong. My best performances come from training here at SNAC, “

On the other side of the world, Jorge is training at the Teiken Boxing Gym, the most representative boxing gym in Japan since 1926, he reports to be ready in excellent condition and training for this important commitment.

“This is my time to show the world that I still have so much more to offer at  the135 pounds division. Devin Haney is a talented and fast young man. But when I was his age, I already was a world champion by snatching the featherweight title from a great champion like Oscar Larios. Now I have much more experience and I feel stronger and better than ever” Linares said.

Showing their deep respect for the sport, Haney and Linares have followed the WBC Weight Management Program and recently reported their 14 days weight towards their very expected match.
