Incredible welterweight championship contest added to AO Arena fight night
Unbeaten 4-0 former Team GB Olympic hero Frazer Clarke bids to kickstart his year in style
Explosive heavyweight prospect Matty Harris also added to the bill
PLUS: Undefeated cruiserweight starlet Scott Forrest takes on a Belgian ‘Beast’
Eubank Jr vs Smith, in association with Wasserman Boxing, is live on Sky Sports Box Office
The British & Commonwealth, IBF European and WBC International Silver Welterweight titles will be on the lines as Ekow Essuman and Chris Kongo go head-to-head in a scintillating addition to the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr vs Liam Smith on Saturday, January 21 at Manchester’s AO Arena.
‘The Engine’ produced a comprehensive, unanimous points victory over BOXXER’s Samuel Antwi at the same venue last September to retain his British & Commonwealth titles and protect his flawless record (18-0, 7 KOs).
But Essuman will undoubtedly face a tough test in the form of ‘2 Slick’ Kongo in what promises to be a barnstorming title clash.
Kongo captured the vacant WBC International Silver Welterweight crown when he defeated Sebastian Formella last June in London. And he’ll be hungry to start the new year in style by putting the first dent on Essuman’s burgeoning CV and claiming two prestigious titles.
Rising heavyweight sensation Frazer Clarke is another sterling addition to the event which is broadcast live, in the UK and Republic of Ireland, on Sky Sports Box Office.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medal hero is eager to ascend up the heavyweight rankings this year and will return to the scene of his last victory.
An opponent will be named in due course but Clarke (4-0, 3 KOs) will be keen to remind the division of his incredible power as he did last November when he outclassed Kamil Sokowlski over six rounds.
Another explosive heavyweight prospect is confirmed for January 21 too in Matty Harris.
The hard-hitting Coventry fighter (3-0, 2 KOs) burst on the scene in 2021 and last year added two impressive stoppages to his résumé, defeating Mait Metsis and Pawel Strykowski. An opponent for Harris will be named soon.
And unbeaten Scottish cruiserweight starlet Scott Forrest (3-0, 3 KOs) will be keen to showcase his talent on the night when he collides with Amine ‘The Beast’ Boucetta (7-5-0).
BOXXER Founder and CEO, Ben Shalom said: “These are four terrific additions to what is already a blockbuster card. Tickets are selling out fast with a bumper crowd all set for an incredible night of boxing in Manchester.”
The main event – in association with Wasserman Boxing – sees bitter middleweight enemies Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Smith face-off in what promises to be an epic domestic clash for the ages as both rivals bid to take a giant leap towards their desired world title pursuits.
Elsewhere on the stacked pay-per-view card, Richard Riakporhe battles former two-time WBO cruiserweight world champion Krzysztof Głowacki, as local lad Jack Massey steps up to the heavyweight division to fight former world champion Joseph Parker.
Final remaining tickets are on sale now at Boxxer.com.

Anthony Cacace, Ekow Essuman, Nathan Heaney, Raven Chapman and Mark Heffron all feature in the supporting cast of the September 24 Joyce-Parker ‘Nowhere to Run’ blockbuster at the AO Arena, Manchester being shown exclusively live on BT Sport Box Office. Joyce vs Parker is promoted by Frank Warren for Queensberry Promotions in association with BOXXER.
The main event heavyweights Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker will, of course, be fighting for the right to take on the winner of the rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua, along with the WBO International, Intercontinental and WBC Silver heavyweight championships. Plus, Amanda Serrano will be bidding to win four world title belts at featherweight when the Puerto Rican superstar battles the unbeaten Dane Sarah Mahfoud.
Cacace (19-1, 7 KOs), 33, will challenge for the IBO world super featherweight title against the unbeaten Italian champion Michael Magnesi (21-0, 13). The 27-year-old from Lazio won the title by defeating Dennis Contreras in April and the British champion from Belfast is his first defence.
Nottingham’s British, IBF European and Commonwealth welterweight champion Essuman (17-0, 7) will be making a third defence of his belts against former English champion Samuel Antwi (14-1, 6) from Stockwell in London.
Essuman, 33, last defended in April at Wembley Stadium with a points verdict over Darren Tetley, having won his British and Commonwealth titles by defeating Chris Jenkins via stoppage in July of last year. Antwi won the vacant English title against Tetley in February 2021 and made a successful defence in February of this year with a unanimous decision win over Conah Walker.
Stoke middleweight Heaney (15-0, 6) will make a second defence of his IBO International title against Bolton’s Jack Flatley (19-2, 4), a recent European title challenger at super welterweight.
Heaney, 33, who is striving towards a major title challenge at the home of his beloved Stoke City, won his IBO belt with a seventh-round stoppage of the experienced Sladan Janjanin in November 2021 and returned to action in April in Telford and survived a first-round scare to ultimately overcome the dangerous Diego Ramirez by a significant margin over 10 rounds.
Former English champion Flatley, known as ‘Quiet Storm’, will come into the fight off two straight victories following his EBU title defeat to Kerman Lejarraga in December of last year. Flatley has a draw on his record against the current British super welterweight champion Troy Williamson.
The Queen of Queensberry, Raven Chapman (3-0, 2), moves quickly into title business with a challenge for the vacant WBC International featherweight championship against Argentina’s Jorgelina Guanini (10-4-2, 1).
The 28-year-old Chapman, known as ‘The Omen’, made her Queensberry debut in May in explosive fashion when she stopped Gabriella Mezei in less than a minute.
She will be stepping up in levels against Guanini, a former IBF world champion at super flyweight, who recently defeated the then unbeaten Brit Stevi Levy in Barcelona. The 30-year-old has previously lost on points to British opposition in Rachel Ball and Ellie Scotney.
The new British super middleweight champion Mark Heffron (28-2-1, 22) from Oldham will also feature on the card in an eight-round contest.
Liverpudlian James Heneghan (7-0) is back out in a six-rounder, while the card is finished off with up-and-coming Queensberry fighters Amaar Akbar (3-0) and Tommy Fletcher (1-0) both in four-round action.
“It is certainly going to be an all-action on BT Sport Box Office in the lead-up to the big heavyweight showdown at the top of the bill in Manchester,” said promoter Frank Warren. “I am thrilled to deliver a major fight for Anthony Cacace after his obvious disappointment over missing out at Wembley Stadium in April and winning this title against an unbeaten champion will put him in such a strong position in the super featherweight division.
“Ekow Essuman will be able to call the British title belt his own if he overcomes a strong challenger from Samuel Antwi in what is his mandatory defence of the belt. The impressive Ekow will quickly be able to move on to European and world honours if he can do the business at the AO Arena.
“It will be exciting to see Nathan Heaney in a good domestic scrap against the tough and very capable Jack Flatley. Nathan has developed and improved enormously in three tricky assignments against overseas opposition, and I am sure his army of fans will be looking forward to this one.
“Our current First Lady, Raven Chapman, really looked the part on her Queensberry debut in May when her opponent was blitzed in just 58 seconds. It showed us that Raven is ready for a step up and former world champion Jorgelina Guanini will provide a stern test of her credentials, with a WBC title on the line.
“Mark Heffron, fresh from his brutal stoppage of Lennox Clarke in July, is fully deserving of a fight closer to home and it will be good to see him really building some momentum as he heads into significant title action later this year.
“Add these four title fights to the four belts being on the line between Amanda Serrano and Sarah Mahfoud, plus the high-stakes heavyweight collision between Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker at the top of the bill and we should be in for a thrilling night of top-class action on September 24 that is not to be missed.”
Tickets for ‘Nowhere to Run’ – the heavyweight clash between Joe Joyce and Joe Parker on 24 September at the AO Arena, Manchester being shown exclusively live on BT Sport Box Office – are priced from £40 and are on sale now exclusively from Ticketmaster.co.uk.

Wembley Stadium, Wembley, London, England – 23 April 2022
Tyson Fury retained his WBC, RING & Lineal World Heavyweight Championships of the World with a stunning knockdown of mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium.
In front of a record boxing crowd, Fury established the upper hand right from the off with the crisper work that nullified the bullish intentions of the rugged Londoner.
The fight became a roughhouse at times and referee Mark Lyson was kept busy issuing warnings to both fighters.
Fury began to land more telling blows in the fifth round as Whyte appeared to tire a little in frustration at barely being able to land a glove on the champion.
Then, in the sixth round, Fury unleashed a show stopping right uppercut that snapped into the jaw of Whyte, who fell heavily to the floor. He got up before 10 but was wobbling on his feet and an invitation to walk towards Mark Lyson resulted in him lurching forward, clearly unable to continue.
The official time of the stoppage was 2.59 of round 6.
Tyson Fury said: “First of all, I want to say that as always, I dedicate this to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He gave me the victory again tonight, and I give Him the glory. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I won this fight in this country tonight in my lovely, my own, my England!
“I’m overwhelmed with the support. I can’t believe that my 94,000 countrymen and women have come here tonight to see my perform. I just want to say from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much to every single person who bought a ticket here tonight or stayed up late to watch it on TV.
“Dillan Whyte is a warrior. And I believe that Dillian will be a world champion. But tonight, he met a great in the sport. I’m one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. And unfortunately for Dillian Whyte, he had to face me here tonight. There’s no disgrace. He’s a tough, game man. He’s as strong as a bull. He’s got the heart of a lion. But you’re not messing with a mediocre heavyweight. You’re messing with the best man on the planet. And you saw that tonight with what happened.
“As a professional, it was an uppercut. I think Lennox Lewis could even be proud of the right uppercut tonight.
“I also want to say, this man here, Sugar Hill Steward, he made a great fighter. Years ago, used to jib and jab, touch and slide. But you’ve seen me here tonight. Sugar, what a legend you are, mate. You’ve made me the biggest puncher in the heavyweight division, by a mile. This man is the best trainer in all of boxing. He’s better than anybody. We were unbelievable tonight.
“I promised my lovely wife Paris of 14 years that after the Wilder 3 fight, that would be it. And I meant it. We had a war. It was a great trilogy. And I meant that. But I got offered to fight at Wembley at home, and I believe that I deserved—that I owed it to the fans, I owed it to every person in the United Kingdom to come here and fight at Wembley. Now it’s all done. And I have to be a man of my word. And I think this is it. This might be the final curtain for the Gypsy King. And what a way to go out! A big thank you to the United Kingdom!”
Ekow Essuman retained his welterweight title-treble – British, Commonwealth and IBF European – with a decision victory over his challenger Darren Tetley.
In a fight that never really caught fire, what we got was a cagey, nip and tuck encounter that Essuman appeared to edge from around the halfway stage after a decent start from Tetley.
The fight was scored 117-111 and 116-112 x 2.
In a featherweight humdinger, Nick Ball seized the WBC Silver title with a brutal defeat of the far more experienced Isaac Lowe. Referee Victor Loughlin stopped the fight as the towel came in after 1.45 of the sixth round.
From a clinch, Ball spun his opponent into the corner with his head moving outside of the ropes. Ball held off until he was back in the ring and, with no intervention from the referee, unleashed two mighty right hooks that ended the fight.
Ball plonked Lowe onto the canvas in round two via a left hook and Lowe also came off worse in a clash of heads in the following round that resulted in a deep gash above his left eye.
Lowe rallied, knowing time was now against him, but it was Ball who always carried the threat and he is now a champion.
Heavyweight hopeful David Adeleye inflicted a rare stoppage defeat on Central Area champion Chris Healey when a monster left hook and ramrod right hand had the Stockport man out on his feet and referee Chas Coakley stepped in to prevent a canvas filled finish. The fight was stopped after 52 seconds of the fourth round.
Tommy Fury moved himself to 8-0 as a pro with a convincing victory over the previously 10-1 Daniel Bocianski, with Kieran McCann calling a margin of 60-54 over six rounds. Fury felled the Pole with a huge right hand in round five, but the brave Bocianski held on to reach the final bell.
At light heavyweight Karol Itauma made quick work of his Polish opponent Michal Ciach, putting him down twice before referee Chas Coakley had seen enough after 2.27 of the second round.
Early on in the evening, teenage prodigy Royston Barney-Smith made it 2-0 as a pro with a 40-36 victory over Constantin Radoi, scored by referee Kieran McCann.
Kurt Walker won on points over four rounds against Stefan Nicolae
Walker scored a knockdown in round 2 with the bout going the four round distance. Walker remained undefeated with a shutout points victory with a score of 40-35.

Wembley Stadium, Wembley, London, England – 23 April 2022
Tomorrow night at Wembley Stadium in London, WBC heavyweight champion Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury and interim WBC champion Dillian “The Body Snatcher” Whyte will fight a highly anticipated battle.
Fury (31-0-1, 22 KOs) will defend his crown against interim WBC champion Whyte (28-2, 19 KOs) in front of a boxing crowd of 94,000. The showdown against Whyte will mark Fury’s first fight in London since February 2015.
For this fight, the WBC created the “Union Belt”, a masterpiece, to celebrate and commemorate the United Kingdom through this great fight.
To huge acclaim, Fury stepped on the scales weighing 264lbs 13oz, 11lbs heavier than his domestic rival Whyte, who came in at 253lbs 4oz.
We now await a St George’s Day battle on the pitch at Wembley Stadium, live on BT Sport Box Office.
“I am so happy to be back here fighting in the UK at Wembley Stadium and you people made it happy,” Fury addressed the cheering crowd. “I just want to give a shoutout and respect to Dillian Whyte and his team, proper professional men and we are gonna give you a real fight.
“Don’t doubt us, we are gonna put on a show like no other before. It will be a war, don’t worry about that,” added the Gypsy King, before the Body Snatcher had his say.
“We are ready to do battle tomorrow, ready to dust up and have it,” agreed Whyte. “Me and Tyson are cool, we have always been cool, but I am ready for war. I am ready to go and it is going to be a good fight.
“Tune it tomorrow and find out.”
The other two championship fights on the card were weighed in and on point. The WBC Silver Featherweight title fight cracker between Isaac Lowe (125lbs 4oz) and Nick Ball (124lbs 8oz) has captured the imagination of boxing fans and is tipped as a likely fight of the night.
The British and Commonwealth welterweight titles, along with the IBF European, will be on the line when Ekow Essuman (146lbs 8oz) defends against Darren Tetley (146lbs) in what should be a barnstorming encounter.

York Hall, London, England – 29 April 2022
EKOW ESSUMAN WILL defend his British, Commonwealth and IBF European welterweight titles against Darren Tetley at York Hall on Friday April 29, live on BT Sport.
On a night where Frank Warren and Queensberry will again provide a showcase for their multitude of elite prospects, Southampton featherweight Ryan ‘The Piranha’ Garner will fight for a first title, the vacant WBC International Silver championship, plus two unbeaten talents collide at middleweight.
Nottingham’s Essuman (16-0, 7 KOs), known as ‘Ekow the Engine’, impressively seized the Lonsdale belt from former champion Chris Jenkins in July of last year and made a spectacular defence in October against the previously unbeaten Danny Ball, who was brutally knocked out in the sixth round.
Bradford’s Tetley (21-2, 9 KOs) won the WBO European title in May 2015 against Mason Cartwright and remained unbeaten for a further four fights before losing out in a thriller against Liam Taylor in August 2020. A challenge for the vacant English title against Samuel Antwi did not go his way in February of last year, but the 28-year-old got back into winning ways in November over six rounds.
Garner, 24, has long been regarded as one of the brightest prospects on the UK scene and his 11-0 record features six impressive stoppages. He was stepped up in November against the 9-1 Angolan Pedro Manuel Gomes and passed his test with flying colours over eight rounds.
Now he wants to be in big fights and replicate his amateur experience that saw him reach minors finals at the age of 11 before winning two schoolboy championships. He also reached the quarterfinals of the world junior championships, as well as bagging European gold at junior level.
In a battle of the middleweight unbeatens, James Heneghan (6-0) from Merseyside jumps in with Finchley’s Jonathan Kumuteo (3-0, 1 KO).
Also in action at York Hall is Buckhurst Hill super bantam Adan Mohamed (4-0, 1 KO), Cranleigh super welterweight Levi Frankham (2-0, 1 KO) and Beckton lightweight Mohammad Bilal Ali (4-1, 1 KO).
Former amateur superstar Charles Frankham (4-0, 2 KOs) from Crowthorne is back in action at super featherweight, along with ex-Team GB product Callum Thompson (3-0, 1 KO), the Joe Gallagher-trained lightweight from Liverpool.
Two recent Queensberry signings complete the card, with featherweight Raven Chapman (2-0, 1 KO) having her third fight in the professional ranks and Blu Bowers from Fareham making his debut at super bantamweight.
“It is great news that we are able to deliver another ‘Prospects Show’ that gives our young talent a chance to shine on a major platform and showcase their abilities to a huge audience,” said promoter Frank Warren.
“Of course, every show needs a headline act and we’ve got a multi-title battle between British welterweight champion Ekow Essuman and Darren Tetley.
“I’ve been so impressed with Ekow since he teamed up with Queensberry and the honest truth is that I would confidently put him in with any welterweight in Britain. Darren is a real warrior so we should have a cracker on our hands with this one.
“Ryan Garner is a young fighter I have admired from day one and had great belief in. He has had his ups and downs but is now completely focused on his craft and he is getting his reward with a first title chance.
“We should really see more of young pros trying their luck against each other so I am happy that James Heneghan and Jonathan Kumuteo are backing themselves in what should be a smashing fight at middleweight.
“Many of our other top prospects will be on parade, but I would like to welcome our new signings Raven Chapman and Blu Bowers to the Queensberry ranks and I look forward to seeing them in action on April 29.”
Tickets for the show at York Hall on Friday, April 29 are on sale now, available directly from the fighters or via eventbrite.co.uk or call: 01992 505 550 (office hours).

Boxen247.com Boxing News Ekow Essuman, frank warren, Queensberry 0
The British Welterweight champion Ekow Essuman has signed a new three-year deal to continue his promotional association with Frank Warren and Queensberry.
Ekow, 32, who holds a record of 16-0 with seven KOs, had three fights under his previous agreement, which also reaped the IBF European title along with the Commonwealth belt in the space of just over a year.
So it was a productive period for the Nottingham man known as ‘The Engine’, who seized the British and Commonwealth titles from Chris Jenkins in July of last year and defended against the previously unbeaten Danny Ball in October. Cedrick Peynaud was defeated in September 2020 for the IBF European honours.
“I am ecstatic to sign because I know that in the next three years I will be pushed and catapulted up the ranks,” reacted the former Team GB product. “I am really excited because I know Frank is one of those promoters that, when he is behind you, can really elevate you up the rankings.
“You need to catch his eye and I went about doing it in the right way. Basically, everybody knows what I am about now.”
Ekow agreed that, over the course of the last year and a bit, he has set about rubber stamping his undoubted potential and proved himself a genuine threat in the division that domestic contenders are not queuing up to fight.
“The first fight with Peynaud was a warm-up for everything and I knew I had to prove myself after that. I wanted a statement performance but the ring rust played a little part in that. Against Chris Jenkins I did that and the Danny Ball performance was the icing on the cake.
“I had always said to people that I just needed the right opponents to bring out the different sides to my boxing and from now on people can just expect exciting matches.
“My next fight will be an IBF defence because, after the last one, it is hard to find opponents for a next British defence without anybody being made mandatory. So it will be an IBF fight against a really good opponent and I can’t wait for that, to show people another side to my style.
Promoter Frank Warren added: “Ekow has shown himself to be a contender of genuine class in his last two fights and I have been so impressed with what I have seen. I would happily put him in with any welterweight in Britain at the moment and expect him to triumph, but they all know how good he is and won’t fancy the job.
“We won’t hang about and will plot a route for him through the world rankings because Ekow is at the point of his career where he is ready for anything.”

Boxen247.com Boxing News BCB, Danny Ball, DIXON FLORES, Ekow Essuman, Liam Davies, MACAULEY OWEN, Owen Cooper, Ryan Woolridge 0
A host of BCB fighters were in action Sayurday night at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham writes Matt Farrington.
Worcester’s Owen Cooper, Telford’s Macauley Owen and Walsall’s Ryan Woolridge were all victorious with Cooper and Owen getting their opponents out early with impressive stoppages.
Towards the top of the card, two of BCB’s brightest prospects, Liam Davies and Danny Ball were in action on a Frank Warren show full of Midlands boxing talent.
Danny Ball challenged British and Commonwealth Welterweight Champion Ekow Essuman.
Ball looked like he was going to try to box and counter at the start of the fight, but as Essuman met him in the middle, a scrap ensued.
Essuman looked compact, sharp and powerful as he ripped into Ball’s midsection early on with hooks and uppercuts. However Ball rallied back with sharp counters and combinations. Both men were trading hard shots.
A shootout from the start, it was unlikely that we would hear the final bell. Ball went down in the sixth after a barrage of shots from Essuman, who had him cornered. Blood poured from Ball’s mouth as the referee called off the fight.
Essuman, the winner, retains his belts but both men have gained the respect and admiration of the many watching, for their grit and fearlessness.
Shortly after this, Liam Davies took to the ring to make his 11th appearance in a pro ring.
This was a short turnover for Liam who fought in the same arena just two months earlier and scored a knockout victory.
He returned with the same explosive energy and pleased his loud crowd of fans from his hometown Telford by delivering an entertaining scrap that was full of hard exchanges of punches.
His opponent Dixon Flores put a lot of pressure on Davies from the opening bell and Liam had to take some good punches and adjust to win. Every round was competitive but ultimately the BCB man showed his class against a fiery and gritty opponent, who gave Davies no respect till the final bell.
Davies won a clear, but hard fought unanimous decision, to claim the WBC International Silver Super Bantamweight Title.

BRAD FOSTER – 121lbs 8oz v JASON CUNNINGHAM – 121lbs 3oz
JASON CUNNINGHAM has warned Brad Foster that he will be taken into “deep waters” in their triple title showdown next month.
The Doncaster man knocked down Yafai three times and says: “There are plenty of positives about Brad, but if there is one thing I have got over him it is definitely experience.
“I just believe that it is my time and it might be a bit soon for Brad. I believe I am going to continue where I left off from Gamal Yafai.
“We haven’t seen Brad in deep waters so we don’t know what he’s like when it is time for a proper gut check.
“There is no doubt that I am his hardest test to date without a shadow of a doubt and we will see what Brad is all about.”
Cunningham, 31, who has also held Commonwealth belts at Bantamweight and Featherweight celebrates ten years as a professional in December.
He has never been beaten at Super-Bantamweight and says: “I’ve done it the hard way and come the old school route. I think I have got that bit of respect that I deserve.
“If I beat Brad I pick up the British title and become a three-weight Commonwealth champion. I don’t think many fighters have won three Commonwealth titles at different weights.
“I’m European champion also so there will only be one place to go. There is a lot riding on this fight for Brad and myself.
“If Brad loses he can have a couple years building back up, I can’t go back to that because I am early thirties.
“The world champions are all good fighters and that is a step above. When I beat Brad that is the only step to go.
“I don’t plan on being in boxing for much longer. I have had a brilliant career, I am doing all right. I want to go for it and get the biggest fights I possibly can.
“I know what I want to make for the rest of my career, but health is wealth and I don’t see myself going on too long in this game.”
The British, Commonwealth and European Super-Bantamweight title fight between Brad Foster and Jason Cunningham headlines a night of Championship boxing at Utilita Arena, Birmingham on Saturday October 9.
In a Midlands derby Nottingham’s Ekow Essuman (15-0, 6 KOs) will make the first defence of his British Welterweight crown when he faces Kingswinford’s Danny Ball (10-0-1, 4 KOs).
Former World Light-Heavyweight title challenger, Callum Johnson (19-1, 14 KOs) returns in a ten rounder against tough Russian Server Emurlaev.

Boxen247.com Boxing News Ball vs. Essuman, Danny Ball, Danny Ball vs. Ekow Essuman, Ekow Essuman 0
Utilita Arena in Birmingham, England 9/10/21
Danny Ball insists he won’t get caught up in the moment when he attempts to wrestle domestic supremacy from one-time sparring partner Ekow Essuman.
The two will clash for Essuman’s British and Commonwealth welterweight titles at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, live on BT Sport, on Saturday October 9.
They battle for the belts on Frank Warren’s fight under the Queensberry Promotions banner, in what is a golden opportunity for Ball.
Essuman puts up the honours he only claimed in the summer, halting champion Chris Jenkins through a seventh round stoppage.
Ball is also unbeaten, with 10 pro wins and a draw compared to the Chamoion’s 15 victories and no blemishes. The challenger has four TKOs, compared to Essuman’s six.
It’s a voluntary option with those newly-claimed straps to take on Ball, from Kingswinford in Dudley, who has lifted the WBC International Silver bauble himself.
Botswana-born Essuman, who now resides in Nottingham, has a solid grounding from his time as an amateur, where he was a part of the Team GB podium squad.
National success first came his way as a pro with the English crown, which he picked up at the expense of Andy Keates, defending successfully over Tyrone Nurse and Curtis Felix Jr.
Essuman, who has also held the IBF European title, is seven years Ball’s senior at the age of 32, but is considered the favourite. That, it would appear, is absolutely fine with Ball.
He said: “It’s been a hard training camp and I feel good to go. Neither of us has had massive amounts of notice, he only won the titles in July after all.
“The board (British Boxing Board of Control) agreed to a voluntary defence against me in August, we got the date and I’ve been in the gym ever since.
“Just to get the chance to box for the British and Commonwealth titles is a dream come true for me, but I’m determined to bring those belts home. I’ll do everything that I can.
“I sparred Ekow once, we did six rounds, but we still don’t know all that much about each other. I was overweight, that day, and just practised a few things.
“I respect him, I know he’s a good operator who does most things well and they don’t call him ‘the Engine’ for nothing. He’s fast and throws his punches in flurries.
“I know I’m in for a hard night, but I’m not the sort of person who feels pressure. I’m laid-back, I don’t get angry, I keep my focus and listen to my coaches.
“I think the key factor, in this fight, is to stay disciplined. I need to start well, behind the jab, stick to our game plan, be patient and the openings will come.
“At some point, over 12 rounds, there is going to be a time where we are both going to have to stand our ground and let our hands go. We will see what happens then.
“I’m ready to take this step and all I want to do is prove the people wrong who say that I don’t stand a chance. They make us tough in the Black Country!”
Ball points to his own successes as good reasons why he can spring a surprise, having previously walked into a trio of title tests as an unfancied contender.
He pushed Kaisee Benjamin in his first chance, the two playing out a 95-95 draw after 10 keenly-contested rounds, meaning Midlands champion Benjamin hung on to the belt.
It took just three rounds for Ball to then remove the previously-undefeated Mason Cartwright, picking up the vacant WBC International Silver strap in the process.
Another ‘0’ had to go when Ball put that belt up-for-grabs against Sam Gilley, dominating enough to prevail through a unanimous points decision.
He now undertakes his 12th pro outing and is still trained by Richard Ghent and Robert Wright, two ex-pros who have been with him since turning over four years ago.
Ball said: “I’ve been an underdog for the last three fights and not one of them has beaten me. Two of them have been 10-rounders, so I know the distance.
“I got the draw with Kaisee Benjamin. It was his home show, which tells you all that you need to know. Everyone was telling me afterwards that I’d done enough to win. He’s still unbeaten.
“I think I ticked a few boxes against Cartwright. I normally start off slow, but it just goes to show you what timing your punches can do.
“It just showed that I wasn’t scared of fighting away again and that I can hurt my opponents, in tough situations against the crowd. He’d sold about 500 tickets.
“It was a real good fight against Sam Gilley. I had to perform, from start to finish, to beat him, but I felt comfortable enough. That result certainly upset the bookies!
“What we set out to do worked in our favour, I didn’t give him too much space and kept coming forward, which he couldn’t handle. That’s what I will need to do again.”
Ball versus Essuman is part of a bumper night of boxing at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham.
Fellow BCB fighter, Liam Davies takes on Nicaraguan Dixon Flores for the WBC International Silver Super Bantamweight Title.
BCB’s Ryan Woolridge, Owen Cooper and Macualey Owen are also in action alongside Callum Johnson, Nick Ball, George Davey, and Amaar Akbar.
Lichfield’s Brad Foster faces Jason Cunningham for the British, Commonwealth and European Super-Bantamweight championships at the top of the bill.
The show will be aired live on BT Sport and tickets can be purchased at frankwarren.com and theticketfactory.com.

Boxen247.com Boxing News Amaar Akbar, Brad Foster, Danny Ball, Ekow Essuman, Foster vs Cunningham, George Davey, Jason Cunningham, Liam Davies, MACAULEY OWEN, Nick Ball, Owen Cooper, Tommy Collins 0
Utilita Arena, Birmingham, England 9/10/21
Brad Foster will face Jason Cunningham for the British, Commonwealth and European Super-Bantamweight championships at Utilita Arena, Birmingham on Saturday October 9.
Their eagerly awaited battle heads a high quality evening of action that includes another British and Commonwealth showdown, plus the return of World ranked Callum Johnson.
British and Commonwealth champion Foster’s promoters Queensberry won the purse bids when they were ordered for his showdown against European title holder Cunningham (29-6, 6KOs).
The fight had been scheduled to take place last month, but Foster suffered an injury forcing a short postponement.
Foster (14-0-2, 5 KOs) lives close to the venue and Frank Warren is backing his home support to roar him on.
The Hall of Fame promoter said: “It is one of the most evenly matched fights anywhere this year, but we want to give Brad every advantage so we have gone to an arena close to his home.
“The bill is well-matched and although everyone has waited a little longer than we expected for Foster v Cunningham it will be worth the wait.
“I expected Brad to be facing Gamal Yafai, but Jason was exceptional when he beat him. Brad has been in fantastic form since he signed with Queensberry and it’s hard to believe he’s only 23.”
Doncaster southpaw Cunningham caused a huge upset when he snatched the European crown from Yafai in May, winning on points.
Foster last fought in March when he scored a shut out points win against Alvaro Rodriguez to claim the vacant IBF International belt.
Former World Light-Heavyweight title challenger, Johnson (19-1, 14 KOs) is likely to make a defence of his WBO Global belt.
Johnson lost a four round war in a IBF title challenge against Artur Beterbiev in October 2018, but is highly ranked by the IBF and WBO. Warren is confident of landing the Boston man another marquee contest.
In a Midlands derby Nottingham’s Ekow Essuman (15-0, 6 KOs) will make the first defence of his British and Commonwealth Welterweight crowns when he faces Kingswinford’s Danny Ball (10-0-1, 4 KOs).
Essuman impressed when he ended Chris Jenkins 28 month reign in July stopping the Welsh star in eight rounds.
Ball last boxed in March when he outpointed fellow unbeaten boxer Sam Gilley over ten rounds in a WBC International Silver title defence.
Liam Davies (10-0, 5 KOs) will return on the card after a recent victory in the same arena in August. Davies had been due to face Andrew Cain on the show, but illness means that bout will likely be postponed.
Also featured on the card will be Nick Ball, George Davey, Owen Cooper, Amaar Akbar, Tommy Collins and Macauley Owen.
Tickets will be on sale this week.

Boxen247.com Boxing News Chris Jenkins, Ekow Essuman, Jenkins vs. Essuman 0
SSE Arena, Wembley, England 24/7/21
Chris Jenkins believes he gets little love for his achievements and is avoided by the supposed very best.
Among those showing little interest in proving themselves is Conor Benn who turned down a big offer from Queensberry to face the Swansea terror last year.
Queensberry stablemate Ekow Essuman (14-0, 5 KOs) isn’t ducking and challenges Jenkins (22-3-3, 8 KOs) for his British and Commonwealth Welterweight titles at SSE Arena, Wembley on Saturday July 24, live on BT.
“I am the boogeyman,” insists Jenkins who will be having his ninth professional title fight when he takes on mandatory challenger Essuman later this month.
It will be the Welshman’s third defence of the British title he took from Johnny Garton in March 2019 and the second occasion Jenkins has risked the Commonwealth belt he won against Paddy Gallagher five months later when it was vacant.
Both fights were on the road, and the dad-of-three added: “I don’t think I get the respect I deserve, but I come through the fights.
“I wasn’t meant to beat Johnny Garton or Paddy Gallagher, but managed both.
“I don’t know why I don’t get respect because I have been fighting at the top end of domestic level since the first fight against Tyrone Nurse six years ago.
“I have had several major championship contests and I’m never in a dull fight even when I was in the ‘Who needs me club,’ and took fights at two or three weeks’ notice.
“Maybe it is because I get cut, don’t bother with social media or perhaps my face doesn’t fit. I am happy in life though and it doesn’t get to me. I have got a thick skin.
“I think there are fighters who have done a lot less than me and get more respect, but nobody is going to be everyone’s cup of tea.
“Hopefully, the respect will come after I beat Essuman, but if not I will still sleep well in my bed at night because life is good.”
Jenkins hasn’t boxed since a technical draw against Liam Taylor in November 2019 when he sustained a badly cut left eye that ended the bout in round three.
He had been due to face Nottingham’s Essuman in March but was ruled out because of a perforated ear drum.
Essuman questioned the injury, but Jenkins hit back: “He can say what he wants about my injury.
“I was examined by a British Board of Control doctor. I wanted to fight on, but the Board is rightly safety first so I couldn’t be passed fit.
“I’ve got a family to care for. Does he think I want to pull out injured?’
“The ambition is to beat Essuman, shut him up and move on.”
Chris Jenkins vs Ekow Essuman is on a bill headlined by Joe Joyce v Carlos Takam for the WBC Silver and WBO International titles at the SSE Arena, Wembley on July 24.
Hamzah Sheeraz (12-0, 8 KOs) makes the third defence of his WBO European title against Spaniard Ezequiel Gurria (15-1, 3 KOs).
In a well matched fourth title fight, Peacock gym ace Chris Bourke (9-0, 6 KOs) defends his WBC International super-bantamweight title against Bloxwich’s James Beech Jnr (12-1, 2 KOs).
There is also heavyweight action featuring David Adeleye (6-0, 5 KOs), while Mill Hill’s George Fox (3-0) will make his Queensberry debut. Reading super-featherweight hope Charles Frankham (2-0, 1 KO) has also been added to the stacked bill., along with ‘The Gent’ Micky Burke Jr (4-0, 1 KO) who also returns after his first stoppage victory in November last year.

Boxen247.com Boxing News Carlos Takam, Charles Frankham, Chris Bourke, Chris Jenkins, David Adeleye, Ekow Essuman, Ezequiel Gurria, George Fox, Hamzah Sheeraz, James Beech Jr, Joe Joyce, Joyce vs. Takam, Micky Burke Jr 0
SSE Arena, Wembley, London – 24/7/21
Frank Warren has delivered a spectacular undercard to support Joe Joyce’s big Heavyweight clash against Carlos Takam at SSE Arena, Wembley on Saturday July 24, live on BT.
Besides Joyce’s WBO International, WBC Silver and Commonwealth Heavyweight championships being on the line, the Hall of Fame promoter has added three further title clashes.
There will be plenty of attention on Hamzah Sheeraz after former two-weight World champion Carl Frampton branded him Britain’s best prospect and added: “If he doesn’t go on and win a world title, I’ll eat my hat.”
Sheeraz (12-0, 8 KOs) makes the third defence of his WBO European title against Spaniard Ezequiel Gurria (15-1, 3 KOs).
Ilford’s Sheeraz, who is highly rated in the WBO rankings for Brian Castano’s World title, will be bidding for a seventh consecutive inside-the-distance win.
He won his title stopping Ryan Kelly in November 2019 and followed that up with impressive defences against Paul Kean and Guido Nicolas Pitto.
Swansea’s Chris Jenkins (22-3-3, 8 KOs) will finally defend his British and Commonwealth Welterweight titles against Nottingham’s Ekow Essuman (14-0, 5 KOs) after recovering from injury.
They were due to meet back in March, but Jenkins who hasn’t boxed since a technical draw against Liam Taylor in November 2019 pulled out because of a perforated eardrum.
Essuman last fought in September 2020 when he outpointed Cedrick Peynaud to claim the IBF European crown.
In a well matched fourth title fight, Peacock gym ace Chris Bourke (9-0, 6 KOs) defends his WBC International Super-Bantamweight title against Bloxwich’s James Beech Jr (12-1, 2 KOs).
Streatham’s Bourke has a reputation as a damaging puncher. His title winning performance when he hammered Michael Ramabeletsa inside two rounds last December is proof.
Beech isn’t an easy first defence. Beech Jnr pushed Brad Foster all the way in a British and Commonwealth title challenge 12 months ago before losing on points.
Warren said: “I am delighted with the undercard. All of the boys have a chance to make statements that show they are headline acts of the future.
“Hamzah is now training in California and from what I am told he is impressing everyone out there. He is a real sleeper in the Super-Welterweight division, and I am with Carl Frampton in believing he reaches the very top.
“Chris Bourke is a threat to any of the domestic Super-Bantamweights and I’m sure he would like to do better than Brad Foster did against James.
“I am relieved that Chris Jenkins will finally get another defence after a long layoff, and am delighted to get Ekow Essuman out again. Whoever wins this fight, be it Chris or Ekow, will be well placed to kick on and start looking at World level fights.
“It is a 50-50 fight and few will tip either with great conviction.”
There is also Heavyweight action featuring David Adeleye (6-0, 5 KOs), who’s opponent is TBC.
Elsewhere on the card, Mill Hill’s George Fox (3-0) will make his Queensberry debut, whilst Reading Super-Featherweight hope Charles Frankham (2-0, 1 KO) has also been added to the stacked bill.
‘The Gent’ Micky Burke Jr (4-0, 1 KO) also returns after his first stoppage victory in November last year.

Boxen247.com Boxing News Conor Benn, Ekow Essuman, Michael McKinson 0
Ekow Essuman has declared he is “gunning for” domestic rivals Conor Benn and Michael McKinson.
Essuman has been frustrated after an injury to double champion Chris Jenkins delayed their fight especially after seeing rivals Benn and McKinson win recently.
The Nottingham boxer explained “When I saw the competition winning it got me itching to show people what I have been working on and how much I’ve improved.
“While I’ve been waiting for the fight to be rescheduled Conor Benn and Michael McKinson have had good wins.
“After I take the British and Commonwealth title from Jenkins there are a lot of tasty fights out there.
“They are the fights I have to aim for, but as soon as I win those titles they will be coming for the jugular.
“Conor’s matchmaker has been spectacular. They have picked the right opponents to help him build his confidence in what he does.
“No disrespect to his opponents, but a lot of the things they did complimented what Conor does as opposed to putting him in there with a good mover.
“Take Benn v McKinson. Despite Benn’s strengths McKinson would win all day. He is awkward and wouldn’t play up to Conor’s strengths
“I will meet them both. I am gunning for them. It’s just when and where.”
Essuman (14-0, 5 KOs) believes that he will finally face Swansea’s Jenkins (22-3-3, 8 KOs) on a Queensberry card next month.
Normally mild mannered Essuman is even doubting whether Jenkins suffered a perforated ear drum before their scheduled clash in March.
“I have had perforated ear drums before and they clear up in two weeks. When I heard he needed longer I asked myself, ‘Is this guy playing games?’, he added
“I did a lot of rounds with David Avanesyan before he fought Josh Kelly and I remember sitting down with him. I asked him how he coped mentally with the all the postponements over two years.
“He said that it had been a long time, but he was able to work on things that he needed to. That sat with me.
“I have taken that on board and I just have longer to cement the things I need to do against Jenkins.
“By the time I get to fight Jenkins things will be instilled in me and I will do them without even thinking.
“I see myself winning in good fashion. I don’t want to give too much away, but it won’t reach the final bell.”
