Estrada vs. Gonzalez

Mexico`s Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada defeated Nicaragua`s Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez via a split decision to retain his WBC super flyweight title, at the American Airlines Center, Dallas, in a worthy tribute to Marvelous Marvin Hagler who has just passed away.

Chocolatito had defeated Gallo back in 2012, when they fought at light flyweight, and fight fans had waited more than eight years for this rematch. They weren`t disappointed. In what`s surely going to be a strong candidate for Fight of the Year, both poured in their power, guile, determination and tremendous competitive spirit, to make this a memorable all time classic. On occasions each got the upper hand, only for the other to retaliate with awesome sustained firepower. Their first fight was excellent. This rematch concerning punches and brilliance, was off the charts. Many fans who were on the edge of their seats were then giving the two a constant standing ovation.

The Judges scored it 115-113 and 117-111 for Gallo and 115-113 for Chocolatito. Many rounds were desperately close with almost non stop frenetic action.

In their first fight, Chocolatito (50-5-1, 43 KO`s)had started slowly and built up. This time both went to work with verve and intensity from the very word go. Gallo (42-3, 28 KO`S) got the better of round one with some crisp combinations, trying to keep the action at middle range.

Chocolatito as always held his hands high, but still got caught with a hard left right combination in the second, only to land his right and a left right combination of his own. His rights were already finding a home.

A clash of heads in the third and then some sinking body shots from Gallo and some superb exchanges, with Gallo landing left hooks and both landing short rights. Mutual respect at the end of a wonderful round with both touching gloves. Gallo went for the body in round four, only to get caught with rights to the head. Then both went to war, with neither backing down. Gallo landed two snappy rights in the seconds leading to the bell.

In the fifth, Chocolatito was moving in catching Gallo with a big right, which earned him a rebuking left hook. An unintended low punch from Chocolatito. Both sportingly touched gloves after a pause moment and as the bell rang to end the round, Chocolatito gave Gallo a friendly pat on the top of the head.

More fearsome exchanges at the halfway point. Gallo connecting with both left and right uppercuts, with Chocolatito firing back, with his trademarks rights. At this point the action was toe to toe, but punch picking rather than slugging. The punch volume was close to insane. Many thought it would diminish…yet it didn`t!

In the seventh and eighth it remained at close range. Gallo was firing on all cylinders, yet Chocolatito was cleverly slipping punches to deliver his own, often by slight but deft movements. Gallo went back to the body in the ninth and tried to maintain the action at longer range where he could control things better.

Chocolatito launched an onslaught in the tenth with Gallo milling on the retreat. Gallo`s left eye was swollen, but this didn`t hamper him. He landed a big left uppercut and Chocolatito replied with a booming right.

More big rights from Chocolatito in the eleventh. Gallo going for the body and then they decided to throw caution to the wind and unload a dazzling array of combinations. It was thrilling and brought the crowd to their feet cheering.

In the twelfth it was Gallo`s turn to pat the top of Chocolatito`s head, and then they really went at it. Both had their moments. A huge right from Chocolatito checked Gallo, but only momentarily as he battled back with a battery impact of his own.

At the end, they embraced. Both were hoisted on the shoulders of their teams. Both had magnificently distinguished themselves.

After a deserved rest, Gallo fights mandatory challenger Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. It`ll be their third encounter. Each holds a victory so it`ll be the decider. Can`t wait!

Saturday night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, World Boxing Council super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada will have a long-awaited rematch against Nicaraguan Román González.

Estrada and González met for the first time in November 2012, in the light flyweight division, and on that occasion,  González won a high-level match by unanimous decision.

The rematch between González (50-2-0, 41 KO’s) and Estrada (41-3, 28 KO’s), is possible thanks to the exemplary acceptance and sportsmanship of the mandatory contender, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, who agreed to  temporarily step aside to allow this great fight to happen.

Both fighters passed the official weigh-in of the evening this Friday. Estrada logged 114.8 pounds, while Gonzalez was 114.8  pounds.

After eight years and four months since their first fight, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez and Juan Francisco “El Gallo” Estrada will meet this Saturday, March 13 in Dallas, Texas, in one of the most anticipated fights of the past decade and definitely a candidate for fight of the year this 2021.

Much has been said about this laureate rematch, and on this case the data or numbers give us an overview of both fighters’ journey to become the figures they are today. In world championship fights, “El Gallo” Estrada has a record of 11 fights, 9 wins (6 KOs), and 2 losses, while Roman has 20 title fights, with a record of 18 wins (11 KOs), and 2 losses.

When it comes to championship rounds, Roman has 158 over Estrada’s 113 rounds. As an important note, none of the 20 Mexicans who have fought the Nicaraguan have been able to defeat him, but Estrada with all his arsenal will have the chance to change history and stop the Aztecs’ executioner.

As for common opponents, ‘Gallo’ and ‘Chocolatito’ have three rivals: Thailand’s Wisaksil Wangek, Mexico’s Carlos Cuadras and Hawaii’s Brian Viloria.

Another important point that can make the difference is age, Gonzalez (33) is three years older than Estrada (30), and in any case the experience makes up for the extra years.

Super flyweight champion of the World Boxing Council Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada (41-3-0, 28 ko’s), will fight world champion, Román ‘Chocolatito’ González (50-2-0, 41 ko’s), in a unification and rematch bout,

It`s top of the bill Saturday, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. “Gallo” Estrada closed his preparation reporting in excellent condition in every way.

Physically, he is strong, in great condition and with no weight issues. Boxing wise, great speed of legs and hands and excellent precision in his hitting. And he has great confidence and assurance that his preparation, his mindset and his timing will lead him to victory.

Estrada concluded his preparation at the Caballero Team gym in Hermosillo, Sonora.
The contest is a long-awaited rematch, which comes more than eight years after the first spectacular.

In November 2012, “Chocolatito” defeated “Gallo” by unanimous decision. At the time, the Nicaraguan, who had already been a world minimumweight champion, was making his sixth title defense, and Estrada, who was a rising prospect and had never fought at light flyweight. Nevertheless, he offered a highly contested fight.

Each went their own way. Estrada was already a flyweight world champion and is currently a Super Flyweight champion, and González has already won titles in these divisions, to be the first boxer in Nicaraguan history to be world champion in four categories.

El “Gallo” will come to this contest after the brilliant slugfest war on October 23, in which he got off the canvas in the third round, to knock out Carlos Cuadras in the eleventh, in Mexico City. And in the same show, “Chocolatito” defeated Mexican Israel González by unanimous decision to retain his title for the first time.

A little over a month before his unification fight against the flyweight champion of the World Boxing Council Juan Francisco Estrada, the Nicaraguan Román González, is training in Coachella, United States.

This long-awaited fight will take place on March 13 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. “Chocolatito” has made a remarkable recovery in his career, after two losses against the Thai Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and now he will have a long-awaited rematch against the Mexican Estrada.

Román commented on some aspects of his training in an interview with journalist Miguel Ángel Cerebros:

“I feel very good and comfortable. I decided to train here because in my country there are many distractions that are not suitable for my career. Currently I weigh 127 pounds, the idea is to gradually lose weight, eating well until the day of the weigh-in. I usually go down without wearing out too much.

“We are going to arrive in excellent condition for the fight because it is so very important. What is certain is that it will be a great fight.”

Roman is 33 years old and arrives with 50 wins, 2 losses and 41 knockouts.

Estrada and Chocolatito first clashed in November 2012 in Los Angeles, with Chocolatito successfully defending his WBA Light-Flyweight title via unanimous decision, and now over eight years later, they will meet again.

Mexican star Estrada (41-3 28 KOs) has established himself as the #1 fighter at 115lbs and underlined his status with a thrilling 11th round KO win over Carlos Cuadras in October in Mexico City, climbing off the canvas in the third round to beat his fellow countryman for the second time in his career.

Former pound for pound #1 Chocolatito (50-2 41 KOs) recorded his own impressive win on the same night by outpointing hungry young Mexican Israel Gonzalez in the first defense of the WBA title that he ripped from Kal Yafai with a clinical KO win in February in Texas.

Now the pair go toe-to-toe once again with supremacy at Super-Flyweight on the line, and Estrada believes that he’s the man to beat second time around and that the rematch will be even more exciting than the first fight.

“I am stronger and have more desire than the first fight,” said Estrada. “We are both champions and we are going to want to win this fight. In the first fight, I was 21 years old and I had no experience of big international fights, he was a pound for pound star at that time but now I think this time it favors me.

“We are fighting two weight classes above the first fight, so it is already very different. I know that I can win this time. I know it’s a tough fight and I think it will be a better fight, but I have already faced him, I know his qualities and I feel that I can beat a fighter who has been knocked out.”

Estrada and Chocolatito clash on a huge night of action in the Lone Star state, with their battle one of three World title bouts.

After 9 years, Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman Gonzalez will fight again, this time for super flyweight supremacy.

For Juan, this fight is a pending debt, as he considers that on that occasion, he gave many advantages because it was not his natural weight. Today, however, things are very different because it is not only in his division, but also he has gained experience that`s helped him to become one of the best pound for pound fighters of today.

Juan, who says he`s been waiting years for this for years, considers that the fight with Roman will be very hard, but he assured that his preparation is not only to win but to get the knock out and finally close the casebook on the Nicaraguan, by being more technical and tactical.

On his part, Roman Gonzalez says he recognizes that both he and Juan are no longer the same fighters of 9 years ago, and there are many differences.  Reclining in bed, after a long morning run, sporting a stubble chin, he laconically warned: “I`m going to fight this one, with a lot of intelligence.”

For “Gallo” this will be the third defense of the WBC super flyweight title, which he won in April 2019  defeating Srisaket Sor Rungvisai  by UD.  The Thai Star beat Román González twice in 2017.

This explosive meeting will take place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on March 13. Both champs suggest that this is a battle that has all the ingredients to become the fight of the year.
