Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA 14/8/21

Joshua Franco left no doubt in his trilogy with Andrew Moloney, as he picked up a unanimous decision victory to retain his WBA super-flyweight title.

They met at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma on a Top Rank event broadcast live on ESPN, with defending champion Franco (18-1-2, 8 KOs) defending his title in style against Moloney (21-2, 14 KOs).

All three judges score the bout 116-112 for Franco (18-1-2, 8 KOs), who won the title from Moloney last June in their first bout.

Franco said: “I had to switch it up on him. He thought I was going to put pressure on him the whole time. That wasn’t working, so I had to switch it up and go to my boxing skills.

“I had fun with my rhythm, with my jab, my feet. I’m comfortable in there, and that’s what I did. We just told each other, all that talking is part of the game, part of building the fight up.

“He’ll be world champion again. He’s a strong fighter. Nothing but respect to him. I wish him the best in his career.”

Josh Franco and Andrew Moloney successfully made weight as they get ready for their WBA super-flyweight title fight tomorrow night.

The Top Rank event takes place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday, and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

The weigh-in took place on Friday, and saw defending champion Franco (17-1-2, 8 KOs) come in at 114.2lbs, with Moloney weighing 114.8lbs.

It sees the duo meet for the third time, after Franco came out on top in the first meeting, while the second fight ended in a no decision after there was ruled to be an accidental headbutt.

Elsewhere on the card, unbeaten Arnold Barboza (25-0, 10 KOs) meets Antonio Moran (26-4-1, 19 KOs), with Barboza looking to extend his unbeaten record. Barboza weighed in at 139.8lbs, and Moran was lighter at 139lbs.

Joshua Franco and Andrew Moloney once again got acquainted with each other as they squared off at their press conference ahead of their world title showdown this weekend.

The Top Rank event takes place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday, and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

Franco (17-1-2, 8 KOs) defends his WBA super-flyweight title against Moloney (21-1, 14 KOs), with the duo meeting for the third time, after Franco came out on top in the first meeting, while the second fight ended in a no decision after there was ruled to be an accidental headbutt.

Franco said: “I feel like I need to prove something. I came here to make a statement and I plan on doing that on Saturday. He’s a crybaby. We only went two rounds last time, and that doesn’t show much, but the fight was going the same way as the first fight.

“In this fight we’ll take care of business. Defending this title means everything to me. I’ve prepared myself the best way in the gym, and winning this fight and making the statement I want to make opens up bigger doors for me. My camp went very well, and I’m ready to go.”

Moloney said: “They took that title away from me last time, and it has made me so determined. It gives me motivation for this fight. I’ve had that last result going over and over in my head for the last nine months. It’s pushed me to train harder and get more out of myself.

“I’ve improved a lot as a fighter and gone to a whole new level. That loss is the only loss on my record, and it lit a fire inside of me. Both of our fights have motivated me even more, and now I’m at my very best and ready to put on a great performance on Saturday.”

Barboza said: “He’s a tough fighter and has fought good opposition. The experience from the Saucedo fight was great. I could have boxed him the whole fight, but I wanted to prove that if someone wants to stand and bang that I can bang.

“If someone wants to box I can do that too. I respect my opponent, and I never look past them. I’ve had a great camp, and I’m really looking forward to Saturday.”

Moran said: “I have learnt more from my defeats than my victories. It helps me going forward and I am ready for this challenge.

“I feel stronger at this weight. I think at 135lbs I was struggling too much. Arnold is a great fighter, but we’ve been working on speed and counter punching and it will be a good night on Saturday.”

Joshua Franco and Andrew Moloney kicked off the boxing world in the aftermath of the pandemic. When they fought for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Flyweight world title on June 23rd, 2020 in Las Vegas, that bout marked the return of the world championships fights after months because of Covid-19.

A little over a year later, their third bout has been confirmed, which will take place in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, next Saturday, August 14th.

To get here they have had to come a long way. In that first fight, Moloney arrived as champion but he met a Franco in a great night, who used his jab in a great way, knew how to read the situations of the fight to win the world title with a close unanimous decision.

In view of the tough fight and the good action, a rematch was called for November 2020. On that occasion, the Nevada technical staff determined that an illegal punch had damaged Franco’s eye, so the bout had to be stopped in the second round and declared a No Decision, when Moloney had the lead.

That is the story that has taken this rivalry to a trilogy. The American Franco is 25 years old and has the clear goal of retaining the title he now holds.

However, the Australian has said on multiple occasions that he intends to regain the belt and at 30 years old he seems to be in the prime of his career to look for a victory that will bring it back to him.

Franco has 17 wins, 1 loss, 2 draws, and 8 KOs, while Moloney has 21 wins, 1 loss, and 14 KOs.

Josh Franco has vowed to finally settle the score with Andrew Moloney when they have their trilogy fight for the WBA super-flyweight title next month.

Franco (17-1-2, 8 KOs) puts his world title on the line against Moloney (21-1, 14 KOs) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday 14 August, on a card that also features unbeaten Arnold Barboza (25-0, 10 KOs) taking on Antonio Moran (26-4-1, 19 KOs).

The fight comes following their no decision back in November after an accidental headbutt, but Franco is ready to earn a definitive victory this time around.

Franco said: “I’m very excited for this third fight with Moloney. I’ve been preparing very well for this fight, and I’m feeling stronger than ever.

“I hope everybody tunes in come fight night because it’s going to be one to remember. I will remind Moloney why I’m the champ. And still!”

Moloney said: “I’ve had to wait nine months to once again fight for what should have been mine back in November. There is no way I’ll be leaving that ring without my world title this time.

“I’ve stayed in the gym and used this time to improve as a fighter. He is up against an even better fighter than he was the last time around. He’s in trouble.”

Top Rank chairman Bob Arum added: “The Hard Rock and the fight fans of Tulsa are in for a treat with a grudge match between Franco and Moloney, and an all-action fight between Barboza and Moran.”
