Gomez Jr has endured a frustrating time over recent months, having been lined up to fight for the belt against former holder, Kane Salvin, on numerous occasions, only for the proposed match to fall through each time. Gomez Jr and Salvin were last due to meet for the title in August, only for the belt holder to withdraw from the contest half an hour before the weigh in! Luckily, just a few weeks later, Michael managed to get a warm up bout against Jahfibus Faure, stopping the Midlands novice in four rounds … and getting rid of a lot of frustration at the same time!
Moston’s Gomez Jr will take the greater experience into the contest against Ahmed, having turned over in 2014, losing just once in 15 fights during that time. The son of exciting former British champion Michael Gomez; the 26-year-old has recently been hailed by his manager Kevin Maree for finally dedicating himself to training and has looked in good form as he prepares to do battle for what will hopefully be the first of many titles.
Ahmed, from Sheffield, turned pro in 2018 and racked up five wins before losing his next two. His first loss was in December 2020, when he challenged for the same title as tonight, losing to previous champ Salvin in a contentious points defeat, with many ringside observers picking him as victor. Last time out in August though, the 27-year-old looked lacklustre when losing over four rounds to Gomez Jr stoppage victim, Jahfibus Faure.
“It’s been a really frustrating year,” explained Michael. “I was supposed to fight for this title in March but it didn’t happen because of Covid, then it was rearranged but fell through again, and then he [Kane Salvin] didn’t turn up on the day of the weigh-in in August! I lost interest a bit [in the title], but got the win last time out and it was happy days, then got a call to say this fight was on and I said ‘I believe it when I see it’!
“Against Faure, that’s the power I have but sometimes I’m not always on the game and I don’t turn up! But that night I showed what I’m capable of. That fight, I didn’t even hardly train because my head was all over the place with what happened three weeks prior [the Kane Salvin fight falling through on fight day] but I still managed to win it very comfortably.
“I don’t know how to put this nicely, but Sufi is ****! He got beat comfortably by the guy I destroyed, and he had a life and death in the fight before that. He’s not very good and I believe I can do whatever I want to him, whenever I please. If I want to go the ten rounds I will, and if I want to take him out in three or four rounds, I’ll do that as well.”
