Daven Haney vs. Jorge Linares Post Fight Press Conference

After defeating Jorge Linares by unanimous decision over 12 rounds, Devin Haney spoke about the fight in which he decided to mix it up more as opposed to the hit and run tactics that lead to negative press and fan criticism.

This change of tactics made for a more exciting fight, to the point of being tagged hard by Linares at the end of the tenth round.

“The fans want to see that,” said Haney. “They want to see if I can go in there and walk my opponent down. Hit him with big shots. I showed I can do it all, I can box, I can bang, I can take a shot and face adversity and get the job done.

“It was a good shot, but I wasn’t hurt, sometimes when you get hit by a good shot, you have to be smart, continue the game plan, and I did that and got the win.

“I knew he was going to come here and give it everything, it was a huge opportunity for him, he would be willing to get knocked out to go for the win, take my biggest shots to get this title.

“I just kept smart, used the jabs, feinted and landed shots in the 12th round. You are going to get hit with big shots in boxing. I didn’t get dropped. I didn’t get hurt. You see fighters get dropped and get up from big shots and people praise them, I didn’t get dropped, I stayed on my feet, kept throwing shots and closed it out.

“I want to fight the best, I stayed focused on Jorge this week, I knew he was a tough competitor, and I got the job done with the game plan. If Teofimo Lopez wants to do it next, let’s do it for all the belts, the real undisputed.”

DEVIN HANEY vs. JORGE LINARES

Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada 29/5/21

Devin Haney will defend his World Boxing Council lightweight crown against legendary former champion Jorge Linares this Saturday at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This Thursday both warriors were face to face in a smooth and stubble press conference prior to this intriguing contest.

Devin aged 22, holds an undefeated record of 25-0-0 with 15 KOs and is one of the finest current fighters. In his most recent fight, he defeated former Cuban world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa by unanimous decision in twelve rounds.

Jorge aged 35, has come through a great preparation with flying colours, at the Teiken Boxing Gym, the most representative boxing gym in Japan since 1926. He has not fought for more than a year, after having tested positive for coronavirus. He is fully recovered and ready for this extraordinary commitment.

Devin Haney: “I want the best Jorge Linares so when I win, there are no excuses and the world knows he came in 100 percent…it’ll be a very dominant performance. I think the world will be surprised at what kind of performance it is. I think even Jorge will be surprised at what type of fighter I am.

“I am very excited to make my third world title defense against Jorge. He was a world champion in three divisions and has fought at the championship level for the past 13 years. I grew up watching Linares, and the fact that this fight is happening in Las Vegas is unbelievable. Boxing fans around the world will see a great match. DEVIN HANEY vs. JORGE LINARES

Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada 29/5/21

 Devin Haney will defend his World Boxing Council lightweight crown against former multi champion Jorge Linares this Saturday at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 22-year-old has built an undefeated record of 25-0-0 with 15 KOs. Devin moved from a young age to Las Vegas with his family. The first time he entered a gym was when he was seven years old. His father took him after a tussle at school, in order to channel his brimming energies plus latent talent.  It proved a crucial step in forming a future world champion.

Back then, his immediate future lay in Mexico, once the State of California denied him his license at the age of 17. He starred in his first fights in the north of Mexico and we can find some of his first fights on YouTube.

The Mexican influence was such that his father has commented: “We went Tijuana for boxing. We know the spirit, and the energy it signifies. We grew up in the Bay Area (of San Francisco), and we have Hispanic friends with whom we grew up. as neighbours. They stand up for what they represent. So I have deep respect for the Hispanic community and for Mexicans.”

Devin also has a history with Floyd Mayweather. The young man who sparred him, also had the opportunity to have received valuable advice from the legendary boxing sage.

Devin Haney says his fight against Jorge Linares is the biggest of his career to date as prepares to defend his WBC World Lightweight title at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday May 29, live worldwide on DAZN.

Haney (25-0, 18 KOs) puts his title on the line for the third time against the former multiple division world champion, Linares (47-5, 29 KOs), and ‘The Dream’, who is entering the last week of training camp, talks about his matchup with Linares, what a win will do for his career, fighting at home, and more.

“It’s been a great eight-week camp. I started in Las Vegas, got some light sparring, then travelled to the Bay Area. I spent three weeks training with Victor Conte and Remi Korchemny at SNAC. The remaining weeks, I’ve been in Las Vegas, getting great sparring work with local pros that have been pushing me hard. I’m ready! The world will see, I’m the best fighter on the planet.

“Linares is a great fighter that has a lot left in the tank. He has held multiple world championships in three weight classes and he’s by far the biggest step up in my career. I give my dad Bill Haney, who is my trainer, a lot of credit, we know exactly what it takes to get this done on May 29th. My skills are on another level and I will make the necessary adjustments, wear him down and completely dominate this fight.

“This is the biggest fight of my career. A victory against Linares should gain me a lot of respect. Everyone knows that Linares is a dangerous fighter and winning this fight gives more reasons to all of the writers, fans, and boxing insiders, to campaign the unification fight with Teófimo López, or at the very least, a world title defense against Ryan Garcia. I’m putting the pressure on them.

“Las Vegas is where I currently reside. I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to fight in front of my family and friends. I’ve only fought in Vegas a couple of times, way back in 2016, before I became a world champion. I’m 100% ready to show up and show out. Las Vegas is the mecca of boxing’s biggest shows and for me this is just the beginning. Now that COVID restrictions are loosening, I’m encouraging all the fans from around the world to come out and enjoy a great night of boxing. It’s going to be fireworks.”

Haney’s clash with Linares tops a stacked card of action in Sin City, as Chantelle Cameron (13-0 7 KOs) will defend her WBC World Super-Lightweight title against Melissa Hernandez (23-7-3 7 KOs) in more World title action.

There’s a fascinating battle between two Golden Boy Promotions stablemates as Jason Quigley (18-1 14 KOs) and Shane Mosley Jr (17-3 10 KOs) go toe-to-toe for the WBO NABO Middleweight title and it’s a huge night for Martin J. Ward (24-1-2 11 KOs) as he faces Azinga Fuzile (14-1 8 KOs) in a final eliminator for the IBF World Super-Featherweight title.

At the other end of the spectrum, there’s a professional debut on the card for Eddie Hearn’s latest American signing, Khalil Coe, Reshat Mati (9-0 7 KOs) enters double figures in the pro game on the card, Ramla Ali (2-0) has been impressive in her two fights since turning pro in October and the first pro female fighter from Somalia gets an introduction to American fight fans on the bill, a card that is rounded off by Devin Haney Promotions’ Darren Cunningham (13-0 7 KOs) continuing his pro rise.

Boxing is back and to close a month full of world-class boxing activity, the World Boxing Council lightweight champion, American Devin Haney (25-0, 15 KOs), will face the three-time Venezuelan world champion, Jorge Linares (47-5, 29 KOs), on May 29 at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, on a card that will be broadcast on DAZN. 

Haney is getting ready at the Victor Conte SNAC training facility in California, where he has commented some aspects of this important commitment:

“The first time I came to SNAC, I was in training camp with Shawn Porter. I was fourteen back then, I mean, as time went on, I started to know Victor more and more.

 Training at SNAC is the complete package, recovery, vitamins, track training, weight reduction protocol all rolled into one, and that’s what makes me strong. My best performances come from training here at SNAC, “

On the other side of the world, Jorge is training at the Teiken Boxing Gym, the most representative boxing gym in Japan since 1926, he reports to be ready in excellent condition and training for this important commitment.

World Boxing Council lightweight champion Devin Haney (25-0, 15 KOs), is readying to face ace former three time world champion, Jorge Linares (47-5, 29 KOs), on May 29 at the Michelob Ultra Las Vegas Arena, on a billboard that will be broadcast on DAZN.

In his most recent bout, Haney defeated former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-4, 18 Kos) by unanimous decision in twelve rounds. Linares has not fought for more than a year, and after testing positive for coronavirus, he recovered and resumed training.

Haney is preparing at Victor Conte’s SNAC training facility in California, where he discussed some prospects for the forthcoming contest:

“The first time I came to SNAC, I was in training camp with Shawn Porter. I was fourteen. As time went on, I started to get to know Victor more and more. SNAC training is the complete package, be it recovery, vitamins, track training, weight reduction protocol all in one, and that’s what makes me strong. Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney will defend his WBC World Lightweight title against Jorge Linares at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas Saturday, May 29. The event will air live worldwide on DAZN in association with Devin Haney Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.

The spotlight will be on Haney (25-0, 18 KOs) over Memorial Day Weekend as he puts his belt on the line for the third time, this time taking on Linares who will provide the sternest test of the champion’s rich talents. The 22-year-old star will box in his Las Vegas backyard for just the third time in his career and first time since his sixth pro outing in May 2016.

‘The Dream’ was elevated to World champion after a destructive KO win over Zaur Abdullaev in New York in September 2019. He went on to defend his belt twice with comfortable distance wins over Alfredo Santiago in November 2019 and Yuriorkis Gamboa the following November.

“I’m very excited to be making my third World title defense against a great fighter like Jorge Linares, who will be the best fighter I will have ever faced in my career,” said Haney. “He’s a three-division World champion who has fought at the championship level for the past thirteen years.

Linares (47-5, 29 KOs) is looking to become a two-time holder of the WBC strap that he won in December 2014 against Javier Prieto. The fight was a catalyst to a four-year run where the Venezuelan ace beat Kevin Mitchell, Ivan Cano, Anthony Crolla twice, Luke Campbell and Mercito Gesta as Lightweight king before he faced defeat in a to-and-fro clash with Vasiliy Lomachenko in New York in May 2018.

The 35-year-old takes on Haney in his 15th World title battle and 53rd bout in over 18 years as a pro. Linares believes there are plenty more chapters to be written in his storied career.

Linares said, “This is my moment to show the world that I still have a lot more to give at 135 pounds. Devin Haney is a talented and quick-handed young man, but when I was his age, I had already become a world champion by snatching the title away from a real World champion like Oscar Larios. And now you can imagine how much more experience I have now at an age where I feel stronger and better than ever.”

“Without a doubt it will be a tremendous fight, but I will demonstrate that Haney made a big mistake by accepting a challenge that he is still not ready to overcome.”
