The president of the International Boxing Association, Umar Kremlev, cured Dr. Ayeni. A touching story about life and boxing. Dr. Joseph Ayeni has been involved in the development of boxing in Africa for more than 30 years. His contribution is invaluable.

For a long time he was one of the members of the IBA Board of Directors. But due to his illness, Dr. Ayeni left his post. Some time after his retirement, he was hospitalized with a diagnosis of stroke. After unsuccessful attempts to cure Dr. Ayeni, the news about his state of health reached the President of IBA – Umar Kremlev.

Umar Kremlev immediately arranged appropriate treatment for Dr. Ayeni, and then sent him to rehabilitation. Now Dr. Ayeni is at home with his family. He is perfectly healthy and full of energy. “I really believe that IBA is a family. Everyone is priceless, even after retirement. I am grateful to fate that everything happened this way.

Umar takes his place with dignity, and he is truly a man of his word. Thank you, my good friend, for giving me a few more days of my life! Thank you to the entire IBA boxing family for taking care of the older generations,” Dr. Ayeni said. Boxing is a family!

Joint Statement regarding CAS appeal - May 19, 2022 | Boxen247.com

Following numerous inquiries from members of the IBA Family,

• Boris van der Vorst, Dutch Boxing Federation President,

• Mike McAtee, USA Boxing Executive Director/CEO,

• Steve Hartley, Boxing New Zealand President, and

• Per-Axel Sjöholm, Swedish Boxing Federation President,

would like to confirm that, through their attorney, they filed a joint Statement of Appeal and Appeal Brief to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on May 17, 2022, versus the named Respondent, Boxing Interim Integrity Unit, Interim Nomination Unit of the International Boxing Association (IBA).

IBA’s Constitution states on eligibility and vetting (article 27) that

27.9 The BIIU Nomination Unit shall determine whether or not each candidate for election to office on the Board satisfies the eligibility criteria contained in articles 27.6, 27.7 and 27.8 and shall provide its determination to the IBA Head Office. Should the BIIU Nomination Unit decide that a candidate for an office as Director does not satisfy the eligibility criteria, such decision may be appealed before the CAS by the concerned candidate. Only the candidate (and not his/her National Federation) has standing to appeal. The appeal shall be lodged within 5 (five) days of issuance of the decision and shall be decided by a sole arbitrator to be appointed jointly by IBA and the
candidate or the CAS. The procedure before CAS shall be expedited for an award (without grounds) to be issued at the latest 10 (ten) days after the filing date of the appeal.

Furthermore, CAS’ Confidentiality Rule 43 states that the Appellants, Respondents and the Arbitrator are prohibited from discussing and disclosing, “…any facts or other information…”without the permission of CAS.

The Candidates again stated they believe in the ongoing legal process and are confident they will ultimately prevail. Based on CAS rules and advice from their legal team, they are unable to provide any further comments at this time.

USA Boxing Foundation Board of Directors member Elise Seignolle was recently voted as one of the 10 new Independent Directors of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Board of Directors after earning the most votes of all candidates during the final day of the IBA Extraordinary Congress in Istanbul, Turkey.

“I am grateful for all the support, however there is a lot of work to be done,” stated Seignolle. “I feel like this is a huge win with the top three Board of Directors that were voted on were females at the Women’s World Championships. This represents the start of a change in leadership and culture.”

“Elise is uniquely qualified to be an Independent Board of Director for IBA,” said Mike McAtee, USA Boxing Executive Director. “Her finance background will be invaluable in helping IBA with financial accountability and transparency. Also, her energy, business knowledge, ability to connect with people and her boxing tenacity will all be used to make a difference in helping change the leadership and culture of Olympic-style boxing.”

The election for the Board of Directors saw the following candidates elected:

Out of 155 voting National Boxing Federations, Seignolle’s 106 votes was 68% of the nations voting in her favor.

Per IBA’s aim for equal representation, at least five of the 10 elected directors had to be women, and only three candidates could be elected per continent.

Umar Kremlev was elected by acclamation to serve a second term as IBA President following the decision of Dutch Boxing Federation leader Boris van der Vorst being ineligible to run by the Boxing Independent Integrity Unit (BIIU).

The IBA Board consists of 18 members, Kremlev, heads of the five continental governing bodies, 10 independent directors and two representatives of the Athletes’ Committee.

The Olympic Qualification System (OQS) for the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024, newly developed and recently approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), defines the categories for Paris 2024. There will be 124 places for seven events on the men’s side and 124 places for six women’s events. IBA has combined most of the IBA’s 13 men’s and 12 women’s weight categories into the respective Olympic categories.

The Olympic qualification period will run from January 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024. Qualification will take place in four phases and will see the finalists of the IBA Men’s and Women’s World Championships in 2023, the top fighters in the IBA and Olympic world rankings, and the winners of the last-chance Olympic Qualifying Tournament. The OQS has been designed to be the fairest ever.

“As an International Association,” IBA President Umar Kremlev explained, “ we have had to take many viewpoints into consideration when formulating this system. I am sure, that after months of discussion and consultation, we have created a qualification system that provides a fair and equal chance to all would-be Olympic boxers. Importantly, it will be based on success at IBA events.”

While developing the OQS, IBA worked closely with the IOC Sports Department, IBA Committees, the continental confederations, athletes, and the host country’s national federation.

“We are very happy with the Olympic Qualification System that has been approved,” IBA Secretary General Istvan Kovacs added. “It was very important to us that the system provided the athletes with flexibility, as well as multiple opportunities to qualify for the competition. And we are determined to ensure fair fights at the qualifying events on the road to Paris.”

The quarter-final contests took place on the fourth competition day at the AMBC American Women’s and Men’s Elite Boxing Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Boxers who were born in 1982 and 2003 are eligible to attend the AMBC American Elite Boxing Championships. There are neutral referees and judges from Europe in the competition to do fair play in Guayaquil, which hosted its last AMBC Confederation event for the elite women boxers in 2009.

Altogether 197 boxers are attending in the AMBC American Elite Boxing Championships from 25 countries in Ecuador. The number of the women’s boxers is a record number of 75 and the most popular category is the featherweight (57kg). 122 male boxers are competing for the thirteen available male titles in Ecuador where the lightweight (60kg) and the light welterweight (63.5kg) are having the biggest number of athletes.

Among the titleholders of the competition, Colombian Yeni Marcela Arias, Brazilian Women’s World Champion Beatriz Ferreira, Argentinian Lucia Noelia Perez, and Canadian Tamara Thibeault will be there in Guayaquil to defend their thrones, which they earned in Tegucigalpa five years ago.

Philadelphia super featherweight Avery Sparrow (11-3, 4 KOs) upset local favorite Matt “Sweet Child” Conway (20-3, 9 KOs) this past Saturday night, registering a 10th round technical knockout for the vacant International Boxing Association (IBA) Super Featherweight and Pennsylvania State title, at the Pittsburgh Shrine Center in Cheswick, Pennsylvania.

“Winter Mayhem”, presented by Gionta Management, was streamed live on www.facebooklive.com.

The scheduled 12-round main event was an old-fashioned battle of cross-state rivals, Philly’s Sparrow and Pittsburgh’s Conway.

Sparrow came out taking advantage of his considerable length advantage, jabbing effectively to rack up points round by round. Sparrow caught Conway with left hooks in the second half of the fight, hurting him in the 10th round. Once Conway was sent backwards to the ropes, Sparrow blasted him with 10 unanswered punches, until referee Chris Riskus waved off the fight. Sparrow led in scoring going into the 10th by scores of 89-82, 88-83 and 87-84.

Sparrow won his first fight in more than three years, when he took a 10-round majority decision over fellow Philadelphian Hank Lundy (29-7-1), snapping Conway’s 3-fight win streak in the process.

“This was our best show yet,” promoter Derek Gionta said. “We had a great crowd at a first-class venue. The main event was a great fight and give credit to Avery and his team on a well-deserved victory. It was a contrast of styles between him and Conway. The slick counter-puncher prevailed in the end over the aggressive pressure fighter.”

“Matt had a very busy 11 months, dating back to last February, going 3-1 with this one being a 12-round title fight. He will look to regroup and resume his career possibly at 126 pounds as he has no trouble making that weight. That will be a decision he and his team will make.”

“I’m eager to see what Avery does next and who (his promoter) Russell Peltz matches him up with as I feel his best days are ahead of him. We were proud to hold such a high-level fight on a regional club show in Pittsburgh. All parties involved were true professionals. My wheels are already spinning for the next show.”

In the co-feature, Alliance, Ohio lightweight Ryizeemmion “The Humble Beast” Ford improved to 7-1 (5 KOs) by stopping an overmatched Charles Clark (3-9-1, 1 KO) when Clark’s corner threw in a white towel late in round one. Ford controlled the fight with his long jab and sharp combination punches to the head and body over a usually game and durable Clark.

Illinois heavyweight Anthony Hollaway (4-2-2, 3 KOs) overcame a 42-pound weight disadvantage against Thomas Hawkins (4-10-1, 1 KO) to take a 4-round unanimous decision. Holloway controlled the action from start to finish against a game Hawkins and mixed in some good power shots in spurts while eluding counters from Hawkins. Hawkins showed some spark with his left hand at times, but Hollaway was too skilled.

Lightning quick super featherweight Alexander Castellano (6-1, 2 KOs) started strong and never took his foot off the pedal versus Shawn Rall (1-5, 1 KO) as the former pitched a shutout, winning each round on all three judges’ scorecards. There were no knockdowns and neither fighter was hurt at any point. Rall put up a game performance once again.

Portugal super featherweight prospect Milton Jorge Andrade Jeremias (3-0, 2 KOs) remained undefeated as he used his 8” height advantage against an elusive and rugged David Boria (0-5), of Ashtabula, OH. Jeremias owned the first two rounds, but his Ohio opponent came back strong in the third round, rocking Jeremias with a solid head shot, and he carried the fight to the final bell. Jeremias won a 4-round majority decision.

The journey continues tomorrow night (Saturday) for Matt “Sweet Child” Conway (20-2, 8 KOs) as he continues to bring boxing’s popularity back to what it was back in the glory days.

Conway headlines “Winter Mayhem,” which will be streamed live on www.facebooklive.com for $19.99 (at Cut ‘N’ Run Productions’ page), versus cross-state rival Avery Sparrow (10-3, 3 KOs), of Philadelphia, in the 12-round main event for the vacant International Boxing Association (IBA) Super Featherweight Championship, at the Pittsburgh Shrine Center in Cheswick, Pennsylvania.

While boxing in Pittsburgh will never be as popular as it once was during the glory years when local heroes Harry Greb (1913-26), Billy Conn 1934-48), and Charlie Burley (1936-50) were household names at the junction of 3 rivers, Conway hopes to make the sweet science more relevant than it has been there in many years.

“Fighting for a world title is a dream come true for me, especially bringing a title back to Pittsburgh,” said Conway, who has never been stopped in 22 pro fights. “Pittsburgh hasn’t been a big boxing town since Paul Spadafora (1995-2014) and Sammy Vasquez fought (2012-2017). I’d like to help bring boxing back here to that level.

“I’m really hoping to win the IBA World title to get my name out there so that this kid from Pittsburgh gets more recognition and title fight opportunities. I want to continue the rich Pittsburgh boxing tradition. It’ll start when I bring the IBA title to Pittsburgh. There are a lot of talented, young fighters in Pittsburgh. We just need to fight and (promoter) Derek Gionta is doing that for me and other fighters. He’s really helping us.”

The 26-year-old Conway is fully prepared to face Sparrow, who’s notable victories have been against fellow Philly fighter 29-2-1 Hank Lundy (WMDEC10) and 19-1-1 Jose Lopez (WUDEC10).

“He’s a tough fighter who uses his jab and is able to move and box,” Conway said about Sparrow. “I’ll try to nullify his left hand and do what I do.”

Conway, who has never been stopped in 22 pro fights to date, has successfully bounced back from back-to-back losses in Reno and Las Vegas on the ESPN+ platform to, respectively, to 10-1-1 Francisco Esparza (SDEC8) and 17-0 Gabriel Flores, Jr. (UDEC8).

“It wasn’t difficult,” Conway talked about coming back from two straight losses after winning his first 17 pro fights. “I lost to a 17-0 guy in Las Vegas. I learned more from my two losses than I did in my 17 wins going into those fights. I’ve taken what I’ve learned from those fights and applied it to my last three fights (all wins). I’m hungrier!”

“Matt has done everything asked of him over the last year, going 3-0),” Gionta remarked. “This is a big fight for the region. Having a cross-state rival from Philly in the main event is huge. Sparrow is a very good boxer and anyone that knows anything about boxing knows that and how good of a match-up this is.

“Putting a belt on the line in a 12-rounder is enough to intrigue casual fans aside from our loyal boxing followers. A win against Sparrow will do a lot for Conway. Most importantly, it’ll show how much he developed over the past year or so and will line him up for bigger challenges down the road.”

In the co-featured event, Ohio lightweight Ryizeemmion “The Humble Beast” Ford (6-1, 4 KOs) faces Texan Charles Clark (3-8-1, 1 KO) in the 6-round co-featured event.

Scheduled to fight on the undercard in 4-round bouts are heavyweight Anthony Halloway (3-2-2, 3 KOs) vs. Thomas Hawkins (4-9-1, 1 KO), undefeated Portugal super featherweight Milton Jorge Andrade Jeremias (2-0, 2 KO) vs. David Boria (0-4), and super featherweight Alexander Castellano (5-1, 2 KOs) vs. Shawn Rall (1-4, 1 KO).

IBA renews anti-doping partnership with the International Testing Agency

The International Boxing Association (IBA) has signalled its continued commitment to sporting integrity in 2022 and beyond, by renewing its partnership with the International Testing Agency (ITA) for three years.

The agreement includes IBA outsourcing all anti-doping activities to the ITA, including testing, intelligence gathering, test distribution planning, education and Therapeutic Use Exemption handling, as well as result management and the handling of anti-doping rule violations. The full scope of the new agreement now also covers in-competition testing, long-term sample storage, intelligence & investigations, source handling and the administration of the Reveal platform, in strict adherence to the World Anti-Doping Code and the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA’s) International Standards.

The partnership agreement was previously signed in 2016, following the Rio 2016 Olympic boxing tournament, and has brought great progress and transparency to IBA anti-doping efforts in the years since.

“Through its work with many sports, the ITA has shown the usefulness of bringing in independent experts to help ensure sporting integrity. At IBA, we are committed to this approach. It is our duty to protect our athletes and reinforce the values of clean sport in boxing. Continuing our work with the ITA will ensure we do exactly that,” said IBA President Umar Kremlev.

Benjamin Cohen, ITA Director General shared: “By entrusting the full range of its anti-doping programme to us at the ITA, we hope in turn that we can enable IBA to focus fully on its core mission of developing boxing, in a transparent manner, worthy of wider trust. We look forward to continuing to provide IBA and boxers with our expertise and are fully committed to supporting IBA in its fight against doping.”

IBA will continue its work towards a better future for boxing and boxers in the New Year, following a roadmap to potential IOC reinstatement in 2023. Competitions that will fall under the renewed ITA partnership will include the IBAWorld Boxing Championships.

AMBC American Boxing Championships to take place in Ecuador

The American Boxing Confederation (AMBC) will host its elite continental Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador from March 22 to April 2. The medalists in each of 13 men and 12 women weight categories are to receive prize money, $10,000 USD for the first place, $5,000 USD for the second and $2,500 USD for the third.

In late December, IBA and AMBC made a joint site visit to Guayaquil to check the work of the local organizing committee (LOC) prior to the event.

AMBC President Jose Laureano stressed that the LOC is made up of very professional people committed to the event.

‘I saw a lot of enthusiasm from all the government authorities and the LOC. Guayaquil has a great advantage for the event: hotels, hospital, competition stage and the airport are within a 7-minute radius. I am very confident that this event will be the beginning of American boxing in a big way,’ Mr. Laureano added.

IBA delegate, Sport and Development Consultant Ria Ramnarine mentioned that all efforts are made ‘to organize the AMBC Elite Continental Championships at a very high standard.’

‘The location of the competition and training venues, the hotels, hospitals and airport is ideal, and transport logistics should not be an issue. The hotels are very good, clean, have all amenities and follow the required Covid protocols. There will be two hospitals on standby, covering a wide range of services for the athletes and officials. The LOC has promised sufficient experienced volunteers as well. Just the competition venue raised some concerns as a lot of preparation work is needed, but the Venue Manager promised it will be ready,’ she explained.

Ecuadorian Boxing Federation President and IBA Board of Directors member Alex Gonzalez said: “The visit was successful as all the venues and hotels, as well as the logistics, were observed, taking a pleasant impression of the speed of the organization”. Mr. González also stated that the visit to Guayaquil of the authorities designated by IBA to carry out the inspection was very fruitful, highlighting the great importance of support from of the local authorities and thanked the President of IBA Umar Kremlev, for the support he is giving him so that the Championships reach the desired success, and that he feels that Ecuador is there to support all the activities of the AMBC.

LOC Director Cesar Polit mentioned that the officials support the 2022 AMBC American Boxing Championships.

‘During their tour, the delegation had the opportunity to meet with the Governor of Guayas, Pablo Arosemena, who is the representative of the President of the Republic in that province, whose capital is Guayaquil. It was a very warm meeting, in which the senior government official expressed his firm commitment to supporting the event and ensuring safety during its development, bearing in mind that boxing is his favorite sport. On that same day, they were received at the Guayaquil Mayor’s Office by their Sports Director, Carlos Álvarez, who gave them a warm welcome on behalf of Mayor Cynthia Viteri, given that she was out of the country. The aforementioned official reiterated his support for the organization of the event and stated that the Mayor’s favorite sport is also boxing’.

Mr. Polit added that several work meetings were held with the members of the LOC in the National Sports Federation of Ecuador and in the Guayas Sports Federation. Likewise, inspection visits were made to the selected venues, hotels and clinics. In these meetings, detailed information was received on the management of the pandemic, the high average of people vaccinated with two doses in Ecuador and the obligation of citizens to be vaccinated to access public and private areas.

On December, 23 Umar Kremlev paid an official visit to Baku to hold meetings with sport officials, National Federation, boxers and coaches of Azerbaijan.

Mr. Kremlev was hosted by the Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan Republic Farid Gaibov, who expressed his full support for the development of boxing in the country.

‘Boxing is a very promising sport in Azerbaijan. We observe with interest the progress made by the IBA this year, closing the debt and creating an impressive prize fund for their athletes. We look forward to next year as IBA continues to take confident steps towards a brighter future for this sport.” Mr. Gaibov said.

‘I am grateful for the opportunity to discuss future cooperation with the Minister of Sports and grateful to the President and the Government of Azerbaijan. Creating and improving conditions for our boxers is our main objective, which is why during my visits to different countries I always initiate meetings with athletes and coaches to speak with them directly’, Mr. Kremlev claimed.

During the visit IBA President also met with Azerbaijan coaches and athletes at the Boxing Academy in Baku.

‘There are strong athletes in the country which we clearly saw at the last world Championships in Belgrade. Azerbaijani boxers achieved great results and showed a lot of promise. We discussed our collaboration with the National Federation and learned from the athletes directly about the difficulties they face so we can work to overcome them together. We strive to ensure equal opportunity for all athletes, so that they may demonstrate their skill and talent in the best possible environment.”

Potential plans for organizing future national and international events were also discussed during President Umar Kremlev’s visit to Azerbaijan.

The International Boxing Association Extraordinary Congress today ushered in a new era for the sport as the federation changed its acronym from AIBA to IBA while adopting a comprehensive set of governance reforms developed by independent experts. A total of 107 of IBA’s national federations were in attendance to approve these wide-spread changes.

“As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, I am very proud of the way IBA is quickly and comprehensively becoming fit for the future. Only a year has passed since I had the privilege of becoming President of IBA. Working together, we have already completed reforms that would not have been thought possible before,” said President Umar Kremlev. “We could not have achieved this alone. In preparing the measures approved by the members of IBA today, we have had the support of leading independent experts in sports integrity and in governance. And all of this has been made possible only with the help of resources provided by our General Partner, Gazprom.”

An update was given to the Congress on parts one and three of the investigation carried out by Professor Richard McLaren and his team into boxing. Professor Ulrich Haas then presented the report of the Governance Reform Group, previously approved by IBA’s Board of Directors. The report was approved by IBA’s National Federations, which also unanimously approved a series of constitutional amendments.

Included among the amendments were the creation of a new Boxing Independent Integrity Unit, which is expected to become operational in the course of 2022. The Board of Directors will be reduced from 28 members to 18, following elections which will be held by June 30. Candidates for election will be subject to extensive eligibility checks which will be conducted independently. Very extensive changes to the Board’s composition are expected, based on the imposition of term limits and enhanced eligibility criteria.

In order to enhance IBA’s commercial viability a new visual identity was revealed, with the new acronym at its heart and a new logo has been unveiled. IBA changed its full name to “International Boxing Association” in 2007, but had maintained its previous acronym of AIBA, which referred to the Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur. The new acronym marks a new chapter in the sport’s history focused on upholding the highest standards of integrity and ensuring every boxer has the chance for a fair fight.

“Just three days ago, the IOC gave its most recent advice to IBA, which included the adoption of governance reforms and diversifying our sources of revenue. It is a sign of how far IBA has come that we were already prepared to deliver convincing progress towards this at full speed,” continued President Kremlev. “We are doing much more than making very big improvements in individual parts of IBA. We are changing our whole culture in a lasting way. The new IBA is ready to serve the boxers of today and tomorrow, together with all those who support them.”

The IBA has also begun work towards defining weight categories and developing an Olympic Qualification System, subject to IOC approval, for Paris 2024.

Abigail Soto who hails from the Republican Dominic, has a record of 13-0-1 with 7 KOs and is the current WBC & WBA Latino champion. Carlouse Welch, from the USA, has a record of 19-2-1 with 16 KOs and is the IBA Intercontinental & Latino Champion.

The bout will be held at Tolu, Sucre / Recréation Tempo Colombia.

Last week, Romanian Flavius Biea took another step towards the world title whilst defending his IBA Intercontinental belt after defeating Mexican Ivan Alvarez by points, with a 97-93 after ten rounds.

He has jumped from top 100 to top 60 in the world (58 world ranked) & became the number 1 Romanian boxer!

Biea: “I knew I was going to have a very hard fight. Like me, he is in the top 100 of the world. I am glad that I was able to bring a strong event here in Timisoara and not just stories. I had a hard fight and I’m glad I got over it. I want the next fight to be even harder, because you have to prove it: to be the best you have to beat the best. After a two-year break, I am very happy with this fight. I’m glad that this fight went to points, because I needed to know where I was, what potential I had and how much I could give. Probably after this match I will be in the top 60 in the world. I’ll sit at the table with my team and we’ll settle. If there is a new event organized by us, it will be with a boxer much more top like this, who will take me to a world title as soon as possible.”
