Richard Riakporhe will officially launch his quest for a world title shot in 2023 when he battles former two-time WBO cruiserweight champion Krzysztof Głowacki on the Chris Eubank Jr vs Liam Smith undercard at the AO Arena in Manchester on Saturday, 21 January.
The undefeated Londoner (15-0, 11 KOs) has bulldozed his way into contention to challenge for a coveted crown with three knockouts in his last three fights.
Now Riakporhe, 32, will be out to claim a major scalp in the form of Poland’s Glowacki (32-3-0, 20 KOs), whose only defeats have come against Oleksandr Usyk, Maris Briedis and Lawrence Okolie.
Riakporhe said: “I’m really pleased that he took the fight. I can test the ‘Midnight Train’ once again and everybody can see how I fare up to the test of facing a former world champion.
“He won’t be a pushover and I have to be at the top of my A game. It is going to be fireworks, believe me.”
Joining the bumper BOXXER: Unleashed undercard – live and exclusively in the UK and Republic of Ireland on Sky Sports Box Office – is Manchester’s own Jack ‘One Smack’ Massey (20-1-0, 11 KOs) who collides with former WBO world heavyweight champion, Joseph Parker (30-3-0, 21 KOs).
The 30-year-old stablemate of heavyweight king Tyson Fury returns to Manchester, scene of his Fight of the Year candidate defeat by Joe Joyce back in September, intent on getting his own world title ambitions back on track.
But Cheshire-based Massey, whose only ever defeat was inflicted by Riakporhe in 2019, will be looking to cause a monster upset against the Kiwi warrior when he steps up to the heavyweight division for the first time.
Further huge fights for this blockbuster card will be announced in due course.
BOXXER CEO & Founder, Ben Shalom said: “We’re adding two major fights – with lots more to come – to what is already a blockbuster night of boxing.
“It’s a massive test and a huge step up for Richard Riakporhe against a former two-time world champion, whose only defeats are to Usyk, Breidis, and Okolie.
“Glowacki has had a long time to prepare for this and it’s a huge cruiserweight fight that could be a headline bout. In what is a very exciting division, it’s crunch time for Richard.
“Local lad Jack Massey has been pushing for a big fight and he has jumped at this test against Joseph Parker. He has got huge support in Manchester and now he’ll be fighting one of the biggest names in boxing.
“Parker is coming back after his Fight of the Year contender with Joe Joyce and will want to show exactly what he is all about. It will be very interesting to see how Parker reacts against a hometown favourite.”
The main event – in association with Wasserman Boxing – sees bitter middleweight enemies Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Smith face-off in what promises to be an epic domestic clash for the ages as both rivals bid to take a giant leap towards their desired world title pursuits.

It’s a bumper three weeks of boxing coming up for Fightzone subscribers, including World Championship Boxing from Glasgow.
On April 30th we are at Bolton Stadium and they have an explosive Cruiserweight clash topping the bill. IBO Champion Jack Massey (19-1) will face Vaclav Pejsar (19-12) from the Czech Republic over ten rounds.
Massey has been extremely impressive lately and will step into the ring full of confidence having disposed of his last two opponents by emphatic knockout.
Pejsar is definitely not to be underestimated and has knocked out fifteen of his opponents in his nineteen victories. He has also upset the odds in his previous visit to British shores, stopping the highly-rated Craig Glover within two rounds.
The stage is set for a hard-hitting showdown on April 30th complemented by a stacked undercard, featuring a host of top prospects and highly-ranked contenders.
The drama continues in Glasgow at the Crowne Plaza on May 6th with ‘A New Era’. Topping the bill is a highly-anticipated international showdown over ten rounds between Marios Matamba (12-1) and Kane Gardner (13-2).
Matamba is making his first appearance in the UK and carries a big reputation having stopped 10 of his opponents.
Gardner is a big step up in class for Matamba and also has knockout power, stopping seven of his opponents inside the distance and winning his last contest via fourth round stoppage.
It’s a return to Glasgow on May 13th at Scotland’s premier arena for the historic homecoming as Hannah Rankin defends her WBA and IBO Super-Welterweight titles against dangerous Mexican Alejandra Ayala.
Rankin is Scotland’s first female world champion and this is the first time a female boxer has headlined an event at the OVO Hydro. It’s been an incredible journey for Rankin who has risen to the top of female boxing in only five years as a professional.
Throughout that time Rankin has travelled the world in search of opportunities. From London to America, from Malta to South Africa, it really has been a worldwide apprenticeship. A few setbacks along the way and now she has the reward of returning to her country to headline and defend those world titles.
In the opposite corner is Alejandra Ayala who represents a formidable first defence. Boxing has a rich history of top-level Mexican boxers and Ayala will represent her country with great pride.
This is Ayala’s chance to create her own history by becoming Mexico’s first female Super-Welterweight champion and she is using this motivation to reach new levels in training. It is a fascinating world title contest.
The event is supported by one of the strongest undercards in Scottish boxing history.
Nathaniel Collins vs Jacob Robinson – Commonwealth Featherweight Title
David Jamieson vs Dec Spelman – IBO International Cruiserweight Title
Regan Glackin vs Martin Taylor – 10 Round All-Scottish Clash
Kieran Smith, Michael McGurk, Jordan Grant, Calvin McCord, Arran McGarvie and Joe Ham also feature.

Boxen247.com Boxing News Jack Massey 0
University of Bolton Stadium, Bolton, England – 30 April 2022
Jack Massey will make the first defence of his IBO World Cruiserweight Title on April 30th at the University of Bolton Stadium, LIVE on Fightzone.
Massey, from Marple but fighting out of Manchester, will return to the scene of his world title triumph when he became the first man to stop Bilal Laggoune – finishing the Belgian in three pulsating rounds in November last year.
Winning the IBO crown thrusts Massey into the higher echelons of the globe’s 14st 4lbs division, with the 28-year-old now ready to face the world’s best.
Massey’s only career defeat in 20 outings was a contentious 2019 British Title loss to touted Richard Riakporhe, in a fight many had ‘One Smack’ Jack winning.
With 10 KOs from his 19 wins, the former double ABA champion, is ready to go again and is aiming to put the cruiserweight division back on notice.
“I’m itching to get back in the ring and show everyone what I’m about again,” said Jack. “Winning the world title at the Bolton Stadium was a special night, and the atmosphere was through the roof. I always bring a big crowd and April 30th will be absolutely rocking again.
“We’re ready to go again. I have a great team behind me with Rob [Rimmer], Kev [Maree], Dennis [Hobson] and Steve Crump – and I can’t thank them enough. I’m ready to put in another knockout performance and prove I’m one of the best cruisers in the world.”
Fight Academy’s Dennis Hobson, stated: “Jack’s achieved so much in such a short space of time with us. Within just two fights he was a European and World champion, and that’s why we have so many fighters wanting to join the Fight Academy stable. There are some massive fights out there for Jack, he has to keep winning in spectacular fashion, and I’m looking forward to this next step in the journey.”
“When Jack won his world title, it was one of the best nights we’ve had so far on Fightzone,” said the boxing channel’s Chief Operating Officer, Asif Vali. “The atmosphere at the University of Bolton Stadium that night was incredible, and this will be another fantastic show that can be watched completely free on Fightzone.”
Fight Academy present Jack Massey defending his International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Cruiserweight Title at the University of Bolton Stadium on Saturday April 30th. Also slated to appear on the bill are Chorley’s Mark Jeffers; Fleetwood’s Dan Catlin; Morecambe’s Reece MacMillan; Ashton under Lyne’s Zak Miller; Droylsden Billy Deniz; Clitheroe’s Reece Farnhill; Middlesbrough’s Ryszard Lewicki; Chester’s Wycombe King and Manchester’s Mikey Gomez Jnr.

What a year! The sporting landscape was hit hard by the pandemic, with many boxing promoters deciding to shut up shop, but that didn’t stop Dennis Hobson and Steve Crump’s Fight Academy being one of the busiest promotional outfits in the country.
Inevitably there were highs and lows, but we’ll remember 2021 as the year we signed up more fighters than ever to our stable, and produced numerous belt holders – including two world champions, a British champ, Commonwealth king, Area Title holders, and International titlists.
And, who can forget turning a disused car park at Sheffield Arena into a fabulous outdoor venue to host a series of summer shows that people will still be talking about for years to come. 2021 also saw the launch of exciting new boxing channel, Fightzone – with Fight Academy, alongside other promoters from around the UK, integral to its success.
With 2022 almost upon us, read below as Dennis takes a look back at an eventful last 12 months…
Who was your Fight Academy Fighter of the Year?
I have three for different reasons! Tommy Frank because he got it wrong against the Mexican but bounced back and showed that you can still come again, win something meaningful and make history. Jack Massey came with us after getting disillusioned with boxing but within two fights, and on a memorable night with a fantastic atmosphere, wins a world title. And Hannah Rankin, with her first fight with us becomes a double world champion.
Hannah’s story is phenomenal, she’s a credit to the sport, has a great team around her and if I had to pick just one, I’d just edge towards Hannah. She’s got those two belts, and her story is incredible. She was born on a farm and has gone on a totally different path, she’s a professional musician, has stuck at the boxing, is intelligent and a great ambassador for Fight Academy.
Fight Academy Prospect of the Year (under five fights)?
I think I’d have to say Tommy Hodgson. He made the best debut I’ve seen, has great support and a great team around him. He has a bit of everything and the pedigree to go all the way. We’ve got plenty of young fighters at all weights though. I also like the look of Nathan Mizon, and Harry Mullins is one for the future too.
Best fight of the year, involving a Fight Academy boxer?
I’d have to go for Matt Windle against Neil McCubbin. Myron Mills versus Lucas Ballinghall was another very good fight but Matt against Neil was an absolute barnstormer, it had everyone up out of their seats and has got to be in the running for the 2021 Fight of the Year in the UK.
Best Fight Academy show of the year?
Because of the atmosphere and for what it meant on the night, I’d have to go for Jack Massey’s world title win in Bolton. It had a big time boxing feel about it, there were over two and a half thousand in there, and the card had real quality on it. We’ve put on some cracking shows and fights this year, and it all built up to that world title night in Bolton.
Fight Academy produced two world champions this year – which fighter do you think will make an impact on the international scene in 2022?
Nathaniel Collins and Mark Jeffers are two fighters who stand out for me. We also have a heavyweight in Kash Ali who – in my eyes – is a player just waiting to happen. We’ve taken our time with him to tweak a few things, and it’s going to be exciting times ahead. He looks the part, is amicable but he’s got heavy hands when he puts his shots together and technically he’s very good. Kash is going to trouble a lot of the top heavyweights. We want to get him another title defence and then in with a name, so people can see what we’re talking about.
We also have Dave Allen and I still think there’s plenty left in him. I care for him as a friend and if I thought anything he was doing was going to hamper his health then I’d have something to say. He can still be a player in the heavyweight division and with him being a manager and trainer of other fighters, it’s keeping him focused on his career. He seems to be doing things the right way now and I’m pleased to be associated with him.
Looking back, give us your thoughts on 2021 as a whole?
It’s obviously been a tough year with the pandemic, but in seven months we’ve got two world title holders, a British champion, a Commonwealth champion, and Area and International titlists. That just shows how good we are at getting fighters opportunities who have the talent but haven’t been manoeuvred right.
This is what we do, we take fighters with ability and manoeuvre their careers onto titles. These are fighters who might have missed the boat in the past, or gone stale – we’ve got the knack of rejuvenating their careers and making things happen. We have a lot of fighters gravitating to us because they’ve seen what we’re capable of with getting big opportunities.
When you look at what we’ve done this year from a standing start, it’s amazing. We had all those shows at the Sheffield Arena car park, nights that people will remember for years to come. Boxers weren’t getting work and we set all that up, did nine shows in eight weeks, and created that special venue from a mucky old car park! We made a statement there, and Fightzone was also launched with those events. It all looks good for the future, in terms of what we’re creating, and the model that we have.

Boxen247.com Boxing News Fight Academy, IBO, International Boxing Organization, Isaac Chamberlain, Jack Massey, Massey vs. Chamberlain 0
Could a huge all-British dust-up for the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) World Cruiserweight Title be on the cards next year?
After his recent win over Dilan Prasovic, the first name on Londoner Isaac Chamberlain’s lips was newly-crowned IBO ruler, Jack Massey – telling him ‘let’s get it on’!
Both men are flying the flag for the UK within the 14st 4lbs division. Brixton’s Chamberlain has lost just once in 15 outings – a 2018 points defeat to WBO World Champion, Lawrence Okolie; while Massey also has just one defeat in 20 – a very contentious 2019 British Title reverse to Richard Riakporhe.
Massey’s star is currently shining brightest though after his punch perfect and destructive third round KO of Belgium’s Bilal Laggoune last month to win the IBO belt. And all eyes have been on the cruiserweight division recently with the announcement that superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will challenge WBC holder Ilunga Makabu in 2022 in an attempt to become a five-weight world champion!
With Massey’s team planning a first defence of his crown for March/April next year, Jack says Chamberlain holds no fear as a maiden defence.
“We’ve sparred before and, after that, maybe he was just full of adrenaline when he called me out at ringside! Look, he got a good win, he’s a good fighter, so his team need to come up with the right offer and it would be a massive fight for the UK.
“I’m loving being a world champion and it would be brilliant to make my first defence in Manchester against him, maybe at the Arena. We’ve got some great fighters who could also be on the card like Mark Jeffers, English champ Charlie Schofield, and maybe even a rematch between Reece Cartwright and Shakan Pitters.
“It’s really exciting with the different offers coming in, but if the terms are right and it can be made – me against Chamberlain would be a great one for the British fans.”
Fight Academy’s Dennis Hobson said: “Now Jack is a world champion, there’s a few people calling him out and Isaac is just one of them in the queue.
“Jack now has something that a lot of people want and we’ve got a lot of options, including international ones. Isaac is doing well again after getting beat by Okolie, and good luck to him but I don’t even know if he’s eligible to fight for the world title!
“It’s a fight I’d like to do at some stage but there’s lots of options and we’re talking to a few people. I do like Isaac and he has ability but Jack is at a totally different level at this moment.”

Jack Massey W TKO 3 Bilal Laggoune
IBO World Cruiserweight Title
12x 3 Minutes
Jack Massey is the new International Boxing Organisation (IBO) World Cruiserweight champion after demolishing Bilal Laggoune in three rounds in a career-best performance at a packed out Bolton Whites Hotel on November 26.
Massey had promised a tenth round stoppage but managed to get the job done much earlier after detonating a left hook on his Belgian opponent’s chin, and then piling on the pressure to force the referee to intervene and wave off proceedings to the joy of a feverish crowd.
Bilal came to the UK as the more experienced man with just two losses in 29 outings but was never really given a chance to get himself into the fight.
Massey, from Marple, boxed patiently from the first bell against the former European Title challenger before showing world-class power to become the only man to stop his rival, and claim world honours in the process.
Now 19-1, with 10 KOs, Massey’s stock has gone through the roof and the 28-year-old can look forward to a 2022 that promises title defences, unification bouts, or potentially both.
Mark Jeffers W PTS UD 10 Michel Garcia
WBO Global Super Middleweight Title
10x 3 Minutes
Jeffers was given a decent workout by another Belgian visitor, Michel Garcia, before claiming the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Global Super-Middleweight belt. Garcia had only lost one in 16 prior to the contest but despite looking ‘fleshy’ on the scales proved that appearances are deceptive. Mark – the taller man – was the aggressor throughout the ten round fight, and ultimately claimed a wide and decisive points victory – winning every round on two of the judges scorecards – but wasn’t able to finish the contest early. Garcia proved to be ring-savvy and game as he toughed out the rounds, with Chorley’s unbeaten Jeffers probably learning more in this fight than in his previous 13.
Khaleel Madjid W RTD 2 Naeem Ali
Super Welterweight
4x 3 Minutes
Fight Notes: The Ali corner pulled out between rounds 2-3, citing an eardrum injury.
Nathaniel Collins W KO 9 Thembani Mbangatha
Commonwealth Featherweight Title
12x 3 Minutes
Collins – making the first defence of his Commonwealth Featherweight Title – was predicted to be in deep against South Africa’s Thembani Mbangatha, who came to the UK unbeaten in 11 with five KOs. In truth though, the Scot though dealt with his opponent with relative ease, proving the class that his stellar amateur career had previously promised. Mbangatha was in great shape and had some success, but was ultimately no match for the clever skills from Collins, who had his man down in the eighth before ending matters in the ninth of a scheduled twelve. Nathaniel remains unbeaten in nine – four KOs – and looks a special talent.
Zak Miller W PTS 6 Christian Lopez
Super Featherweight
6x 3 Minutes
Fight Notes: Referees score was 60-55 for a Miller points victory.
Josh Holmes W TKO 8 Ruslan Berchuk
Super Featherweight
8x 3 Minutes
Fight Notes: Time of the TKO stoppage was 2:48 of the 8th and last round for a Holmes win.
Harry Mullins W PTS 4 Marius Vysniauskas
4x 3 Minutes
Flyweight
Fight Notes: Referees score was 40-37 for a Mullins points victory.

The pair will meet at a packed-out Bolton Whites Hotel in a feverish atmosphere that will see the winner move onto – potentially – unification fights, and whoever comes second-best going back to the drawing board.
A former top amateur that included two ABA Title wins, Jack turned over in 2013 and in that time has racked up 18 wins, nine KOs, and just the one – contentious – defeat to touted Londoner, Richard Riakporhe. Aged 28, Massey, still has it all to play for but knows the fight with Laggoune represents his big chance to break onto the world scene. ‘One Smack’ has worked with various promoters but since signing with Dennis Hobson and Steve Crump’s Fight Academy earlier this year, the fighter from Marple has picked up the IBF European belt and now gets a shot at world honours.
Laggoune is best known to British fight fans for his losing effort against Northern Ireland’s Tommy McCarthy in October last year for the EBU crown. The fight was a close affair – with one judge having it a draw – but the cards were stacked in McCarthy’s favour, taking place on UK soil and with Laggoune accepting the fight at short notice. Make no mistake though, the Belgian can fight with just two losses from 29 outings, and 14 KOs also proving that he carries a dig.
Jack and Bilal met for the first time weeks ago at a press conference to announce the show. Now, with the first bell imminent, the Brit says his opponent exudes confidence but that won’t be enough to get him through the fight.
“He comes across as a professional and there was no hate between us,” stated Jack. “He’s fresh and he wants it; he’s not at the back end of his career, and he’s hungry. He seemed like a confident guy, but you’ve got to be confident if you’re getting in and fighting for a world title. If you’re not confident in your own abilities then you might as well hang the gloves up.
“Bilal’s a good fighter. He’s been around, has fought world level guys and he’s no mug. He’s got all those boxes ticked. It’s going to be a difficult fight but I believe I’ll get on top of him and probably get a stoppage.
“I believe I’ll outbox him from the beginning; he’s quite square on and open down the middle. I’ll box him at first, start catching him and when he’s there to be hit, turn the power up and get the stoppage.
“I just can’t wait, I’ve sold hundreds of tickets and the atmosphere is going to be amazing. Time seems to be going slow but it’ll be here before I know it. I’m excited and nervous, a bit of both, if anyone says they don’t get nervous, they’re full of ****! I need those nerves though to get me switched on and alert, and I’ll be ready to bring home that world title.”
Fight Academy present an evening of world title fight action at Bolton White’s Hotel on November 26. Topping the bill are England’s Jack Massey and Belgium’s Bilal Laggoune contesting the vacant International Boxing Organisation (IBO) World Cruiserweight Title.
Chief support sees England’s Mark Jeffers and Belgium’s Michel Garcia fight for the vacant WBO Global Super Middleweight Title, and Scotland’s Nathaniel Collins defending the Commonwealth Featherweight Title versus South Africa’s Thembani Mbangatha.
Also appearing on the undercard are Fleetwood’s Dan Catlin; London’s Harry Mullins; Zak Miller and Charlie Schofield from Ashton under Lyne; Manchester’s Josh Holmes and Billy Deniz, and Bolton’s Khaleel Madjid.

Bolton’s Whites Hotel, England – 26 November 2021
Michael Jennings knows a thing or two about being at the top of world boxing. So, it’s worth taking note when he predicts a huge future for his fighter, Mark Jeffers, ahead of the biggest fight of his career.
Jeffers takes on Belgium’s Michel Garcia on November 26 for the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Global Super-middleweight Title at Bolton’s Whites Hotel, with all the action broadcast live by exciting new boxing channel, Fightzone. The contest is one of the co-chief support bouts to Jack Massey’s IBO World Cruiserweight Title fight against another Belgian, Bilal Laggoune.

Mark’s trainer, Jennings, had his own extremely successful career during the noughties. From Chorley – the same as Jeffers – Michael lost just three times in 39 fights and was the British, and WBU World Welterweight Champion. Known for his fantastic stamina, Jennings is maybe best remembered for challenging one of the boxing greats – Miguel Cotto – in 2009, losing in five rounds.
Ahead of the big fight between Jeffers and Garcia – the Mancunian breaks down both men and explains why he believes the WBO Global belt will find itself around the waist of the UK fighter.
“Michel looks quite strong, is a decent pressure fighter and he’ll definitely come for a fight,” said Jennings. “He can dig too, so Mark needs to be switched on from round one.
“I’m pleased though that Garcia will come to fight. So far, Mark’s been in with kids that will tuck up, but he’s also had some hard fights too like Anthony Fox, to see what he’s all about. The kids that he’s fighting now will be coming to win and that will suit Mark down to the ground, and he’ll start stopping a few of them.
“Mark is so dedicated, has really good movement, fast hands and good strength. For a kid his age, his sparring is unbelievable. On fight night, as long as everything is one hundred per cent, he’s going to properly shine and standout.
“He’s only young and not fully developed. He probably won’t even get his man strength until he’s 25 but, skills-wise, if you compare him to me at the same age, he’s twice as good! If everything goes to plan, and he keeps pushing forwards and gets the right fights, he’ll do extremely well in the game.
“I’d like to see him get in the mix at British level but he’s still got plenty of time. When he starts winning titles, we want him to be able to keep them. We want to be the best in that division. When he is ready to fight for the British Title we want him to be someone that no one can beat.
“I’m confident about this fight. I’m not over-confident because it only takes one shot, but when you break both fighters down, Mark has a lot more positives.”

Boxen247.com Boxing News Bilal Laggoune, Fight Academy, Fightzone, Jack Massey, Massey vs. Laggoune, Rob Rimmer 0
Bolton Whites Hotel, England – 26 November 2021
Rob Rimmer was always going to be a top boxing trainer. Rob is the son of one of the UK’s best known coaches, Bobby Rimmer, and has been around boxing gyms, great fighters and big fights nights for as long as he can remember.
The Manchester man – who boxed as an amateur and was also on the professional books of both Oldham Athletic and Bury FC – has trained a number of fighters at championship level but will be in the corner for his biggest night of boxing on November 26 when his fighter, Jack Massey, competes for the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) World Title.
Massey will be in a hard fight against Belgium’s Bilal Laggoune at a sold out Bolton Whites Hotel, with all the action shown live by new UK boxing channel, Fightzone.

Massey has lost just once in 19 outings, a contentious 2019 British Title defeat to highly rated Londoner, Richard Riakporhe. Since then, the 28-year-old has got back on the winning track with a brace of wins, including picking up the International Boxing Federation (IBF) European belt with a stoppage victory in his last fight in July.
Laggoune, also 28, has experience on his side. The Belgian has just two losses in 29 bouts and has been in with decent operators. Bilal can also dig, evidenced by his 14 KO victories, and has a point to prove to UK fans after a short-notice ‘away from home’ decision loss to top-rated Tommy McCarthy for the European Title in October last year.
Ahead of fight night, Rimmer offers his insight into the upcoming battle:
Break down Laggoune as an opponent for Jack?
This is one of Jack’s toughest fights. Bilal has a good credible record and has fought at a good level. He’s tough, durable, has never been stopped before but he’s the perfect opponent stylistically and it’s going to make for a great fight.
I’ve had a look at him, and I probably know him better than he knows himself! I’ve sat down time and time again to study him and looked at every possible angle. We’ve implemented a game plan and I really think Jack is going to nail it.
What are Laggoune’s strengths?
He’s tough and he takes risks. He likes to box on the front foot and every time I’ve watched him he likes to come forward. He’s got a good left hook and a big right hand but I think Jack’s boxing ability will shine through on the night.
The telling point in this fight will be Jack’s power. He has sheer, overwhelming power. I look back at the McCarthy fight, and no disrespect to McCarthy, but there were no really concussive shots, and vice versa. Lagounne was told towards the end ‘you know he can’t hurt you’ and to ‘come out and give it the round of your life’. If you come in with Jack and don’t respect his power then you’re in big trouble.
He’s said recently that Jack doesn’t hit hard; he’s going to have the shock of his life because Jack has world level power.
Bilal is very experienced, he’s been around and he has boxed for that European Title but I look back at the [Richard] Riakporhe fight, that was a couple of years ago and Jack’s a totally different fighter. The timing is perfect, Jack is a more well-rounded fighter now and full of confidence. I’m expecting the best Laggoune on the night. Every fight at this level is a tough one and we’re preparing for a 12-round war.
What are Jack’s qualities as a fighter – what do you see in the gym?
People forget that Jack was an elite amateur. He was a double ABA champion and boxed all around the world for England. I know I’ve talked about his raw power but he can box. He’s a smart fighter and has got fast hands for a big lad. And he’s grown into the weight, so he’s big. But for me, it’s all about his hand speed for such a big lump.
How is he looking ahead of the fight?
He’s looking tremendous. Everything is where we want it to be. He’s fit, conditioned and on fire! I really couldn’t wish for him to be in a better place. It’s been a tough camp, and I’m sure it has been for Bilal as well.
How confident are you that Jack can win the IBO World Title?
I’ve never been more confident from what I’ve seen in this camp and the way I’ve seen him perform. He’s full of confidence, has shown he has tremendous heart and a great chin, but the timing of this fight is perfect. He has that hunger and desire and I’m sure Bilal does too, but I see Jack being way too strong and fast. I just don’t see any other outcome. I know Bilal has never been stopped and it would be a huge statement, but I stand by what I’ve said and fully believe he’ll go.

IBO World Cruiserweight Title
If Jack Massey can win the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) World Cruiserweight Title on Friday November 26, he’ll find himself in excellent company.
Massey and Belgium’s Bilal Laggoune meet for the vacant belt at Bolton Whites Hotel – live on Fightzone – with the winner the latest in a long line of illustrious names to have held the title. Boxing legends including James Toney and Tommy Hearns (pictured) are both previous holders, as well as other notable names including Brits Carl Thompson and Ola Afolabi, and Poland’s Tomasz Adamek.

Massey versus Laggoune is a fight that has got fans talking and trade insiders buzzing – with many unable to call a winner.
Jack has lost just once in 19 outings, a debatable 2019 British Title defeat to highly touted Londoner, Richard Riakporhe. Since then, ‘One Smack’ has put together a brace of wins, including picking up the International Boxing Federation (IBF) European belt with a stoppage victory in his last fight in July.
Laggoune though will be the Brit’s biggest challenge to date. Also aged 28, Laggoune has fought ten more times than Massey – with just two reverses in 29 bouts – and been in with capable operators. The Belgian also has heavy hands, having knocked out 14 men in the opposite corner, and is coming in off the back of a short-notice ‘away from home’ decision loss to top-rated Tommy McCarthy for the European Title in October last year.
Ahead of the big night of boxing, Fight Academy promoter Dennis Hobson says this is a fantastic opportunity for Jack to stake his claim on the world scene but he will need to be at his very best to come out on top.
“When you look at the names who’ve won this title, some of them have created absolute legacies in the sport,” stated Dennis. “So, to be on the same page as them is a fantastic achievement; nice company to be in. Jack left Queesnsberry [Promotions] a bit disillusioned with the game and within two weeks of coming with us he won the IBF European Title and is now in for a world title straight away. Things like this just don’t happen, there’s been a lot of hard work behind the scenes. We put our money where our mouth is, and we’re good at getting our fighters opportunities. If it was easy, everybody would be doing it!
“This is a platform for both Jack and Laggoune to move into some mega fights. He looks the part does Jack, and he’s exciting to watch. It’s tough fight but so it should be, it’s a world title fight. You don’t just get given these belts, you have to earn them. He’s in with a kid who’s beatable but if he’s not up to it then he’ll get found out. We believe in Jack, he’s not in with Floyd Mayweather but has got a very credible opponent who will be as determined as Jack to become a world champ. You don’t win an opportunity like this without having to dig deep, but we believe Jack has it in him to do that.”

This is a massive opportunity for both men. The IBO version of the world title has previously been held by top fighters including Antonia Tarver, Tommy Hearns, James Toney, Mairis Briedis and Marco Huck – and the winner can expect to be involved in huge unification contests further down the line.
Massey has lost just once in 19 fights – a contentious British Title defeat to the highly touted Londoner, Richard Riakporhe, in 2019. Since then, ‘One Smack’ Jack has put together a brace of wins, including picking up the International Boxing Federation (IBF) European belt in his last fight in July.

The Belgian also has heavy hands, having knocked out 14 men in the opposite corner, and is coming in off the back of a debatable ‘away from home’ decision loss to top-rated Tommy McCarthy for the European Title in October last year.
Massey knows this is a fabulous opportunity provided by his Fight Academy promotional team, with a win meaning he leapfrogs his domestic rivals onto the world scene.
“I’ve had a little look at him and he’s a very good opponent. I saw him box McCarthy and the decision was a bit ‘hit and miss’, it was very close. He’s excellent opposition and this can only be a good fight.
“He’s definitely the best I’ve faced so far but, with the world title on the line, I’m training harder than I ever have before and believe I’ll go out and do a proper job on him. This is why I’m boxing and I intend to make a big statement.
“It would be amazing to win the IBO belt. When you look at the people that have held [a version of] it over the years like Anthony Joshua, Usyk has just won it from Joshua, Klitschko, Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather – the list goes on for ever. All the big names at different weights have fought for it, and it’s a great title to have.
“It would be absolutely massive to win it; it would open up some huge doors and could lead to unification fights against some big names. The night will be amazing, headlining on Fightzone, we’ll sell the place out and the atmosphere will be incredible.”

Boxen247.com Boxing News Dennis Hobson, Fight Academy, Fightzone, Jack Massey, Steve Crump 0
Big-punching cruiserweight Jack Massey is the latest addition to Dennis Hobson and Steve Crump’s Fight Academy stable after signing a three year promotional deal.
Previously with Queensbury Promotions, the 28-year-old former British Title challenger will get straight down to action with a shot at the IBF European Title on July 2 in Sheffield, live on new boxing platform Fightzone.
After a stellar amateur career that saw him win the Senior ABA Title and notch up wins against current British stars like Joshua Buatsi and Chris Billam-Smith, Jack turned over in 2017 and went 16 fights unbeaten before losing a competitive fight for the Lonsdale Belt against highly-rated Londoner, Richard Riakporhe.
Since then the fighter from Buxton known as ‘One Smack’ has got back to winning ways with an eight rounds runout in December last year, leaving him sitting pretty at 17-1 (8). Ahead of his Fight Academy debut, popular and well-supported Massey says he believes that Fightzone viewers will get to see the business-end of his career.
“I’m absolutely buzzing. I’ve seen the production, with the back to back shows and it looks amazing. I’ve got other lads in my gym like Charlie Schofield with Fight Academy, and I’ve seen what they’ve done with him, getting him a title fight straight away. I went down for a meeting with Dennis and the guys and it’s great what they’ve offered me.
“Part of the attraction is the amount of shows they’re putting on, and I need to get our more regularly. I’ve had some bad luck with my career and it’s not gone exactly the way I’ve wanted it to, but they’ve got me straight into a title fight, which is great. That just shows how good Fight Academy are – bang, straight away getting me a big fight!
“I would like to fight for the British Title again. We’ll see what happens, there are lots of options out there but I’m just excited to get the chance to get some solid momentum with Fight Academy and show the Fightzone viewers what I’m all about.”
Manager Kev Maree, said: “Jack became a free agent and we had lots of options but I was really excited by the plan and vision of Fight Academy. Like me they believe Jack is a future world champion and they will do everything to give us the fights and platform to facilitate that.
“I’ve been blown away by the quality of the shows in the Fightzone Arena. It’s up there with the best I’ve seen. They are modern, fun, current, and I think the future of where boxing shows are headed.”
