Two-time world champion Jose Ramírez has confirmed that he will appear at the Sixth Annual Box Fan Expo on Saturday, September 17, 2022, at the Las Vegas Convention Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Expo will also coincide with the mega trilogy fight between Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin, that will take place later that evening at the T-Mobile Arena.

Ramírez will hold a Meet & Greet with his fans at his booth during the fan event held over the Mexican Independence Day weekend.

The Box Fan Expo is an annual fan event that coincides with some of the sports’ legendary, classic fights in Las Vegas, including Mayweather vs. Maidana II, Mayweather vs. Berto, Canelo vs. Chavez Jr., Canelo vs. GGG II, and Canelo vs. Jacobs. Centered in boxing’s longtime home – Las Vegas – this year’s Expo is a must-do for fight fans coming in for this legendary weekend, with dozens of professional fighters, promoters, and companies involved in the boxing industry. Trained by the well-known Montiel family, in Los Mochis, the promising Nunez will be looking for his 23rd professional KO in as many wins and twelfth consecutive stoppage. The 24-year-old is a seven-year professional who has done all his fighting inside his homeland, thus far.

Also scheduled for the livestream are a pair of junior flyweights in an eight-round duel, as Hector “Rapidito” Flores (19-0-4, 10 KOs) of Tijuana, Baja California will take on Jose “Motorcito” Ramirez (13-8, 7 KOs) of Tlalchapa, Guerrero, Mexico.

Also scheduled is a six-round super featherweight battle between Mexico City’s undefeated Alberto Mora (3-0, 3 KOs) of Mexico City and an opponent TBA.

And to open the broadcast, unbeaten super featherweight Raymundo “Ray” Rojas (6-0, 4 KOs) of Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, will take on Roberto “El Michoacano” Reyes (2-2) of Zitacuaro, Michoacan, over six rounds.

Jose “Sniper” Pedraza has reached boxing’s pinnacle twice before. A former junior lightweight and lightweight world champion, Pedraza (29-3, 14 KOs) hopes to join an elite list of Puerto Rican fighters to win world titles in three weight classes.

He can take a giant leap towards that goal when he battles former unified world champion Jose Ramirez in a 12-round junior welterweight main event Friday, March 4 at Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. The winner will be positioned to fight for a world title later this year.

The entire Ramirez-Pedraza card will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+.

This is what Pedraza had to say after a recent training session in Puerto Rico.

“We have the title in our sights, and at this point, only the best are left standing on the road to the world championship. March 4 against Ramírez will be a very important fight, since the winner will be ready to challenge for a world title. That’s why I feel like this is a world title match. March 4 against Ramírez, this is all or nothing.”

“Facing a Mexican warrior like Ramírez and being part of the historic rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico is something very important and a great responsibility. At the same time, it’s a great thrill to give the fans a legendary match that they will remember forever. I want to put up a great fight. I want to give the fans a war.”

“My goal since moving up to 140 pounds has been to win a world title to add myself to the select group of Puerto Rican champions in three weight divisions. I want to be in that group along with ‘Tito’, Cotto, Gomez, Camacho, and Vázquez, among others. I already feel that my body is acclimated to the division, and now I am ready to achieve my goal.”

Former unified junior welterweight Jose Ramirez (26-1, 17 KOs) is ready to turn the page. Last May, he lost a competitive decision to Josh Taylor for the undisputed title. The road to redemption begins Friday, March 4, at Fresno’s Save Mart Center in a 12-rounder against Puerto Rican two-weight world champion José Pedraza (29-3, 14 KOs).

Ramirez, from Avenal, California, returns home to the friendly confines of the Save Mart Center. In five headlining events at the venue, Ramirez has drawn more than 65,000 of his most devoted Central Valley fans through the turnstiles.

This is what Ramirez had to say after a recent training session at Robert Garcia Boxing Academy in Riverside, California.
“The loss against Taylor taught me a lot. It was the first of my career, and I feel like it brought back my hunger for boxing again.

I’ve really enjoyed this training camp preparing to get back on the winning path. I’ve had a lot of fun training with Robert Garcia in Riverside.

I have corrected the mistakes that I made in that fight against Taylor. Maybe I had been making them for a long time, but when you are winning all your fights, you do not always look at the mistakes. I had a hard time accepting it, but I’ve already turned the page. There’s nothing I can do about it.”

“I am ready to return to the top of the division. I know that I am one of the best fighters at 140 pounds. I want to regain my titles and win all of the belts. It doesn’t matter if it’s in a rematch against Taylor, challenging another champion, or in a vacant title match against another top contender. I want my titles back.”

“José Pedraza is a tough test. He is a very good fighter and has looked good since he adjusted to the 140-pound division. I want to earn another shot at the title. I am not one to talk much. I come to face the best and let my performances in the ring speak for themselves.”

The homecoming of former unified junior welterweight world champion Jose Ramirez is happening, just 27 days later than expected. Central Valley native Ramirez will fight former two-weight world champion Jose “Sniper” Pedraza in the 12-round main event Friday, March 4 at Save Mart Center in Fresno, California.

Ramirez and Pedraza were scheduled to fight Saturday, Feb. 5, but Pedraza tested positive for COVID-19.

In the six-round heavyweight special feature immediately before the main event, Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez Jr., from the Central Valley town of Tulare, California, will make his long-awaited professional debut. The 10-round co-feature will see the Top Rank debut of featherweight contender Joet Gonzalez, who will fight Filipino veteran Jeo Santisima. The entire Ramirez-Pedraza card will stream live and exclusively in the United States on ESPN+.

Ramirez, the pride of California’s Central Valley, will face former two-weight world champion Jose “Sniper” Pedraza in a 12-round junior welterweight battle Saturday, Feb. 5 at Save Mart Center in Fresno, California.

In a six-round heavyweight special feature immediately before the main event, Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez Jr., from the Central Valley town of Tulare, California, will make his long-awaited professional debut.

The entire Ramirez-Pedraza card will stream live and exclusively in the United States on ESPN+. Undefeated lightweight prospect Raymond “Danger” Muratalla (13-0, 11 KOs), rising junior lightweight Karlos Balderas (11-1, 10 KOs), middleweight prospect Javier “Milwaukee Made” Martinez (5-0, 2 KOs), and 6’9 heavyweight Antonio “El Gigante” Mireles (2-0, 2 KOs) are all slated to appear on the card.

I am also delighted that the Central Valley’s next superstar, Richard Torrez Jr., will make his professional debut in front of a sold-out crowd.”

Ramirez (26-1, 17 KOs) returns to the ring for the first time since May’s decision defeat to Josh Taylor for the undisputed junior welterweight title. Ramirez had made four title defenses since winning the WBC crown in 2018, and he unified the WBC and WBO world titles the following year with a knockout win over Maurice Hooker. Ramirez has drawn 65,794 fans through five headlining fight nights at Save Mart Center. When he fought Jose “Chon” Zepeda at Save Mart Center in February 2019, 14,034 fans — an attendance record for boxing in the arena — turned up. Pedraza (29-3, 14 KOs), from Cidra, Puerto Rico, is a former junior lightweight and lightweight world champion who has won three in a row since a decision defeat to Zepeda. He is coming off June’s eighth-round knockout over the previously undefeated Julian “Hammer Hands” Rodriguez.

“I am motivated to become world champion once again, and it begins with a tough fight against Pedraza,” Ramirez said. “There are no better fans than the ones who pack the Save Mart Center every time I fight. The Central Valley is my home, and it is always a great honor to perform for my people.”

“This one is personal to Ramírez,” said Rick Mirigian, Ramirez’s manager. “This is the fight that puts him back at the top of the sport and in line for the biggest fights.”

Pedraza said, “The new year will bring a big opportunity to battle against a former world champion like Jose Ramirez. This fight is very important for me because I know this will be the fight that will give me the opportunity to win a world title in a third weight division.

“There is no space for a loss. Not on my record, and much less in my mind. I know that Ramirez is a great fighter and always comes well prepared. He always comes in shape to give the fans a great fight.”

Torrez made history as the first American Olympian to medal in the Super Heavyweight division since Riddick Bowe in 1988. Last month, he signed a long-term professional contract with Top Rank. Torrez was a U.S. National Championships gold medalist in 2017 and 2018, in addition to capturing three U.S. Youth National titles from 2014-2016. He went 154-10 as an amateur, and after a long international career in the unpaid ranks, he returns home for his pro debut.

“I can think of no better place to turn pro than in front of my Central Valley friends and family,” Torrez said. “They’ve supported me my entire amateur career, and I am thrilled that they will see the start of my professional journey. Let’s show everyone what it means to be valley grown!”

Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete and Joet Gonzalez engaged in a border war for the ages.

Navarrete (35-1, 29 KOs) retained his WBO featherweight world title with a bloody unanimous decision (118-110 and 116-112 2x) over Joet Gonzalez (24-2, 14 KOs) on Friday evening at Pechanga Arena San Diego. It was the second successful title defense for Navarrete, who moved up to the featherweight ranks last year after defending his junior featherweight crown five times.

“Without a doubt, I hurt him, but every single time he came back, and he also hurt me. A couple shots he landed hurt me during the fight,” Navarrete said. “It has been an exciting ride so far, and from now on, I want the bigger fights.”

The bigger fights could include an eventual move up to 130 pounds, where a match with WBC champion Oscar Valdez would be one of the biggest all-Mexican showdowns in the sport.

But on this night, Navarrete had to contend with the stubborn Gonzalez, who hung in tough despite swollen right eye in the early rounds. Navarrete threw 979 punches, including 104 in the 12th round to close the show in style.

Gonzalez said, “I thought I had it seven rounds to five, eight rounds to four. I was really surprised by that score of 118-110, I believe. But it is what it is, and I did my best.”

Santillan Thrills Hometown Crowd

Welterweight contender Giovani Santillan had not fought in his hometown in more than seven years. In front of a partisan crowd that broke out into frequent “Gio” chants, the San Diego native improved to 28-0 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Angel Ruiz (17-2, 12 KOs). The scores — 100-90 2x and 99-91 — did not reflect the game effort of Ruiz, who gave nearly as good as he received for much of the fight.

Buoyed by the local faithful, Santillan prevailed in the phone both affair and edged closer to a title shot.

Santillan said, “This is what it’s all about, a great fight in front of my amazing hometown fans. They were cheering for me all night, and it was an honor to perform for my people in San Diego.

“My father and I always wanted to fight here. It was a dream come true, and credit to Angel Ruiz for going to battle for 10 rounds. He’s a true Mexican warrior. I have nothing but respect for him.”

In other action:

Puerto Rican southpaw junior lightweight Henry “Moncho” Lebron (14-0, 9 KOs) notched the most significant win of his young career, turning back the hard-charging Dallas native Manuel Rey Rojas (21-6, 6 KOs) by eight-round unanimous decision. All three judges scored the fight 80-72.

Junior welterweight prospect Lindolfo Delgado (14-0, 12 KOs) won his second bout in six weeks, shutting out Juan Garcia Mendez (21-5-2, 13 KOs) over eight rounds (80-71 3x). Delgado floored Mendez with a two-punch combination in the closing stages of the eighth round.

Middleweight upstart Javier “Milwaukee Made” Martinez (5-0, 2 KOs) did not give any of that famous Midwest hospitality to Daryl Jones (4-3-1, 2 KOs), as he bested the Florida resident over six one-sided rounds by scores of 60-54 and 60-53 2x. After a second round that saw Jones nearly stopped against the ropes, the two battled the rest of the way, trading punches in the waning seconds of the sixth round.

Bantamweight prospect Floyd “Cashflow” Diaz (3-0) dominated former amateur rival Jose Ramirez (1-1, 1 KO) via four-round unanimous decision, knocking Ramirez down in the opening round and cruising to a points win by scores of 39-36 and 40-35 2x.

The newest heavyweight on the block showed out. Antonio “El Gigante” Mireles, from Des Moines, Iowa, shined in his professional debut, knocking out Demonte Randle (2-2, 2 KOs) in the opening round. Mireles, a southpaw, knocked down Randle early in the first round with a right hook. Following two more knockdowns, the referee called a halt to the fight at 2:07.

Puerto Rico’s next superstar hopes to break through with a statement-making performance under the desert sun. Xander Zayas, the 19-year-old puncher from San Juan, will step up in class when he meets Jose Luis Sanchez in a six-round junior middleweight bout this Friday, Sept. 10 at the AVA Amphitheater at Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona.

Zayas-Sanchez and an eight-round lightweight battle between the unbeaten Raymond “Danger” Muratalla and Ecuador’s Jose Angulo will be part of the undercard of Oscar Valdez’s WBC super featherweight world title defense against unbeaten Brazilian Robson Conceição.

The undercard, which also includes WBO flyweight world champion Junto Nakatani’s title defense against Angel “Tito” Acosta, will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+ at 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. PT. ESPN+ will also stream Valdez-Conceição and a 10-round junior lightweight showdown between Gabriel Flores Jr. and Luis Alberto Lopez starting at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Zayas (9-0, 7 KOs) has emerged as one of the sport’s top prospects since debuting as a 17-year-old in October 2019. He fought four times in 2020 and has already fought three times in 2021. He shut out James Martin over six rounds in February, blasted out Demarcus Layton in 56 seconds in April, and followed that up with a third-round demolition over Irish veteran Larry Fryers in June. The Fryers fight was Zayas’ welterweight finale, as he’s testing the junior middleweight waters versus Albuquerque native Sanchez (11-1-1, 4 KOs), who is coming off a draw in May against respected spoiler Adrian Granados. Sanchez has not lost since 2013.

Muratalla (12-0, 10 KOs), a Robert Garcia-trained Southern California native, has notched seven consecutive knockout wins. The 24-year-old shined a pair of times last year inside the MGM Grand Las Vegas Bubble and stood out in May on the Josh Taylor-Jose Ramirez undercard with a fifth-round knockout over 30-fight veteran Jose Gallegos. Angulo (14-2, 7 KOs) has won two straight fights since a majority decision defeat to then-unbeaten prospect Alejandro Guerrero.

In other undercard action on ESPN+:

2016 Mexican Olympian Lindolfo Delgado (12-0, 11 KOs), who made his Top Rank debut June 19 with a unanimous decision over Salvador Briceno, returns against Miguel Zamudio (45-16-1, 28 KOs) in an eight-rounder at junior welterweight.
René Telléz Girón (15-1, 9 KOs), who owns a December 2019 knockout victory over top prospect Karlos Balderas, will face Texas native Eduardo Garza (15-4-1, 8 KOs) in an eight-rounder at junior lightweight. Giron has fought once since the Balderas triumph, knocking out Guadalupe Acosta Rodriguez last November in seven rounds.
Mexican junior welterweight knockout artist Omar “Pollo” Aguilar (21-0, 20 KOs) will step up in class against Paraguay’s Carlos Manuel Portillo (22-3, 17 KOs) in an eight-rounder. Aguilar has 15 first-round knockouts on his ledger and has not been extended past three rounds since December 2018.
Tucson’s Jose “Fosforito” Ramirez will make his official pro debut against fellow Arizona native Miguel Ceballos (2-0, 2 KOs) in a four-rounder at junior featherweight.

Scotland has a new undisputed champion. Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor outlasted Jose Ramirez in an instant classic, notching a unanimous decision (114-112 3x) to capture the junior welterweight title. With the win, Taylor becomes the sixth male undisputed champion of the four-belt era, and the first from Scotland to do so.

After the bout, Taylor said, “I’m ecstatic. I’ve trained my whole life for this. I’ve dedicated my whole life for this moment. I’ve dreamt of it so many times over, man. I’m so, so happy. I’m over the moon. I’ve trained for this moment all my life.

“I’ve got nothing but love for Ramirez. This week was no disrespect. It was all part of the mind games to get in his head, to make him more eager to jump in at me and be more aggressive, to use his aggression against him.

“I thought the scorecards were a little tight. I thought they were well wider than that. I wasn’t too happy with the selection of the judges, but I wasn’t going to moan. I was confident in winning this fight anyway.”

Ramirez commented after the bout, “He took advantage of some of those clinches but, hey, I got back up and tried to give it my best and stay smart. I was never hurt. I was aware. I was just disappointed every time it happened. I tried to shake it off and get back to my rhythm. But it was overall a good fight. Hopefully, I get back and I learn from my mistakes. You win some and you lose some.

“I felt like I landed some clean shots. It came down to the clinches. He would let his hands go as soon as he got his chance and I think I left it to the referee to do his part and it was a lack of experience on my part.”

Ramirez, who had been world champion since March 2018, invested in the body in the early going, but Taylor (18-0, 13 KOs) was equal to the task in the trenches.

The tide turned in the sixth round when Taylor nailed Ramirez with a straight left hand as Ramirez lunged forward. In the seventh, an uppercut planted Ramirez to the canvas. Ramirez (26-1, 17 KOs) nearly dug himself out of the hole, sweeping the last four rounds on one scorecard and winning three of the last four on the other two.

“The scorecards should have been a bit wider. I wasn’t too happy with the selection of judges but we were still confident of winning the fight. There is a new warrior king on the map and he’s from Scotland!”

At the Virgin Hotel in Las Vegas, Josh Taylor had only a small audience. A few occasional flags of his country, Scotland, waved in the blue lights. But no one doubted his determination when it came to fighting José Carlos Ramírez, who got up from two falls and extended the fight to the scorecards. The victory was for Taylor by unanimous decision (114-112 x3), winning the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring Magazine Super Lightweight belts. From now on, they will call him Undisputed Champion.

It was not an easy fight for any of them. Taylor gained a lot of confidence after knocking Ramírez down back-to-back in chapters six and seven. In the eighth round, Ramírez, of Mexican blood, was trying to find a molecule of hope in the environment, while the European was steadying himself. The two falls were noticeable in the scorecards. In the final part, Ramírez had a brief take-off, but it was obvious that if he didn’t knock out Taylor, it would be very difficult for him to win.

After the first rounds it was clear that both Ramírez and Taylor had a plan to dynamite the other with many blows to the body. And Ramírez’ strategy was to look for Taylor’s chin with left hooks, which came very well. At times the new king stayed on the ropes resisting, while he read intentions and thought of a better plan until the fall on the sixth round came, then the other, and thus the collapse of Ramírez, who sold the defeat dear.

The outlook cannot be better for Taylor now. His legacy has grown greater. He swept his rivals in the World Boxing Super Series and by beating Ramirez there is no other opponent to suit him. He has made history for his country without being a prophet. He remains undefeated in 18 fights, with 13 KOs. A long reign, or his immediate foray at 147 pounds, await for him.

Josh Taylor made history as he defeated Jose Ramirez to become the undisputed super-lightweight champion.

He was crowned the undisputed super lightweight world champion last night in a dogged battle that kept up to all the high expectations beforehand. Jose Ramirez was sent to the ground twice which made a difference in the direction of the fight as well as the end result with the scoring.

Tensions were high in the run-up to the unification fight for supremacy in the super lightweight division, which took place last night in the Theater of the Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas. The encounter between the two undefeated world champions promised a world-class match on equal terms and as the fight unfolded, this was proven over the twelve hard fought rounds. Josh Taylor (18-0, 13 KOs) and Jose Ramirez (26-1, 17 KOs) beforehand traded verbal duels and a ‘scuffle’ in the hotel hallway during fight week. In the ring, both boxers gave their all and did not back-off in the the expected class bout. After twelve hard fought rounds, the judges unanimously scored Josh Taylor as the winner.

Ramirez started fast and the different tactics became clear right from the start. WBC and WBO champion Ramirez fought from a compact stance and initially looked the stronger fighter. He tried to exert himself on Taylor in order to fire combinations whilst Taylor worked a lot with the lead right hand and took aim at the body of his opponent early on in the fight. Taylor was able to control the distance, standing tall and fighting his fight well in the first two rounds. 28-year-old Ramirez increased the pressure from the third round which developed into an intense battle with both boxers having their moments. Taylor, trained by Ben Davison, was particularly good at long distance. In close range, Ramirez was able to counter with powerful combinations and seemed to be bossing the fight up to that point.

In the sixth round, the bout took a dramatic turn. Ten seconds into the round, Taylor let his hands go and connected with Ramirez’s chin that sent him to the canvas with a left cross. Ramirez initially recovered well, but made another mistake in his concentration in the next round. Following a clinch, he neglected his guard and was punished by Taylor with a severe left uppercut which put him on the canvas again, this time harder. Kenny Bayless administered the count but this time, Ramirez didn’t seem the same and was hurt.

It was not until the ninth round that Robert Garcia’s protégé shook off the effects of the second knockdown, but was finally back into the fight. The “Tartan Tornado” acted very controlled with his boxing and by this point, and with the two knockdowns in his favour, he was able to bring his advantages in speed again and again, with repeated heavy punches in a controlled and non desperate manor.

In the last two rounds, Ramirez once again revealed his great fighting spirit as he pressed, realising that he may be behind on the scorecards. Taylor checked the time of the last rounds as if to cruise to the end with his lead in place. This could of been costly as it was no forgone conclusion that he was ahead, and especially as the ‘away’ fighter.

After twelve hard fought and pleasing rounds, the judges’ scores were read out. They unanimously scored the bout 114-112 x3, all for Taylor, who can now call himself the undisputed super lightweight world champion after just 18 professional bouts.

Afterwards, both boxers showed class and put aside the previous provocations that fuelled the pre-fight tension. An overjoyed Taylor protested his respect for Ramirez in the post-fight interview and stated that the incidents last week were solely for the purposes of mental games that are common in boxing.

What next for Taylor? After an absorbing fight and torturous training, a good rest I’m sure will be taken by the Scot. Undisputed super lightweight champion of the world….Ken Buchanan will be pleased.

Taylor defeated Ramirez by unanimous decision, to walk away with the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO titles following an incredible battle at the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas on Saturday.

The Tartan Tornado dominated the majority of the rounds, and scored two massive knockdowns in round six and round seven, with Ramirez only just managing to get back to his feet.

The fight went the distance, with the judges scoring it 114-112, 114-112, 114-112, meaning in just his 18th professional fight Taylor becomes one of the few men in history to become four-belt undisputed champion.

WBC/WBO super lightweight world champion José Ramírez is set to fight WBA/IBF champion Josh Taylor tonight (Saturday 22/5/21 at The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (ESPN, ESPN Deportes & ESPN+, 8 p.m. ET), a history-making bout that will crown an undisputed champion.

After the final bell, two one-of-a-kind fight artefacts — a 1/1 poster signed by Ramírez, Taylor and Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, and Ramírez’s fight-worn Cleto Reyes gloves — will be auctioned off by Goldin Auctions. The proceeds will be shared with a pair of charities supported by Ramírez: The V Foundation for Cancer Research and The Bautista Foundation, which funds community, education and health programs in California’s Central Valley, where Ramírez was born and still resides.

Ramírez (26-0, 17 KOs), a 2012 U.S. Olympian, has long used his fights as a platform to raise awareness and funds for myriad non-profit’s.

Ramírez said, “The fight against Taylor is a big one, but I am especially proud to fight for the V Foundation and The Bautista Foundation, two charities that do such vital, life-changing work. Get those bids up, donate to a worthy cause, and be sure to watch my fight against Josh Taylor on Saturday.”

Stephen Foster, the founder of Fresno Coin, fired the first haymaker of fight week when he opened the bidding at $7,500.

Josh Taylor and Jose Ramirez both made weight as they prepare for tomorrow night’s highly-anticipated undisputed super-lightweight title clash.

IBF and WBA super-lightweight champion Taylor (17-0, 13 KOs) faces WBC and WBO super-lightweight champion Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, and will be broadcast live in the UK on Fite TV and in the USA on ESPN.

The weigh-in took place on Friday, with Taylor coming in at a ripped and ready 139.6lbs, while Ramirez was the identical weight, also coming in at 139.6lbs.

The two men were then involved in an intense face-off, as they prepare to do battle with one another in a massive fight tomorrow evening.

Here are their parting verbal ripostes, before the talking is over… and the action commences:

Jack Catterall has made his prediction ahead of Saturday’s massive undisputed super-lightweight title fight – revealing that he believes Josh Taylor will defeat Jose Ramirez.

Josh Taylor insists he is confident of getting the knockout against Jose Ramirez on Saturday as they went head to head at their final press conference ahead of this weekend’s undisputed showdown.

The winner of this monumental fight, presented by Top Rank to be broadcast on ESPN, will become the second undisputed super lightweight champion in the four belt era, standing alongside Terence “Bud” Crawford.

Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) has been a world champion since March 2018, when he overcame Amir Imam via unanimous decision, to win the vacant WBC strap. Following the Imam victory, he hired noted trainer Robert Garcia, and the duo has combined to go 4-0 in world title fights.

Ramirez knocked out Maurice Hooker in July 2019 to unify world titles and defended his belts last August. Then with a majority decision over former world champion Viktor Postol. Ramirez, a proud son of Mexican immigrants, who hails from Avenal, Calif., is an inspiration and catalyst for social development via change in his community.

He’s devoted his time and resources to myriad causes, including cancer research, water rights for area farmers, and COVID-19 relief for Central Valley field workers.

Taylor toppled Postol by unanimous decision in 2018 and won the IBF world title the following year with a decision over Ivan Baranchyk. He unified the IBF and WBA titles in October 2019, edging Regis Prograis by majority decision in a rugged and thrilling showcase masterpiece.

He made his first defense as a unified champion last September, blasting out and brushing aside mandatory challenger Apinun Khongsong in the first round. Taylor draws on this to etch his own history, as the first undisputed, four-belt Scottish champion.

The two men met at their final press conference on Thursday, and Taylor made it perfectly clear that he believes he will get the victory inside the distance.

Taylor said: “I respect every fighter that jumps in the ring. You’ve got to respect Jose Ramirez, he’s 26-0 and a unified champion and has beaten everyone in front of him, but as soon as the first bell goes on Saturday that’s all out of the window. I’m confident of getting the knockout.

“This is a great fight for boxing and a real, pure match-up. Ramirez has been on the radar for some time. He’s a good fighter and has been making waves and doing well.

“After I beat Viktor Postol we started thinking he may be my next opponent as I was the number one challenger for the WBC title, but then the World Boxing Super Series came around and I went into that.

“He decided not to go on it, so if he did enter then we could have already decided who’s the best by now, but instead we’ll find out on Saturday.”

Jack Catterall is on a Las Vegas spying mission as he plots to become World Super-Lightweight champion.

Edinburgh’s IBF and WBA World champion Josh Taylor meets WBC and WBO title holder Jose Ramirez on Saturday and Catterall will be front row making sure the winner doesn’t duck out.

The winner has vowed to face WBO mandatory contender Catterall next after the Chorley man agreed to step aside and allow all four belts to be at stake in boxing’s capital.

Catterall, who boasts a pristine 100% record with 26 wins, no losses and no draws, said: “I’m excited to be here for fight week.

“It is a massive fight, hopefully it is a good fight and I can let everyone know I’m serious about fighting the winner.

“I will do some training, sparring and ultimately watch the fight. After the weekend we will have a clear direction of where we’re going.

Josh Taylor has stated that Jose Ramirez is vulnerable and quite easy to find – meaning he won’t have to go looking to land punches on him in the fight ahead of their huge undisputed showdown on Saturday.

IBF and WBA super-lightweight champion Taylor (17-0, 13 KOs) faces WBC and WBO super-lightweight champion Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) this weekend, with the event taking place at Las Vegas’ newest world-class casino resort, Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.

The event will be broadcast live on Fite TV in the UK and on ESPN in the USA, and Taylor spoke in-depth about the battle when taking part in a conference call this week.

Taylor said: “I’m nice and relaxed about this week and couldn’t be anymore prepared mentally and physically. I’m not wasting energy thinking about the fight, it’s just another day at the office. A lot of eyes are on me but I’m totally confident in myself.

“I think he’s vulnerable and quite easy to find. I won’t have to go looking for me to hit him, and I think that means it has all the makings of a barnburner because he comes to fight and I do too.

“I’ve never been so happy with a fight camp, and we’ve had a nice, long preparation for this. After my last fight I took a few weeks off and went home for Christmas, but I was always ticking over in the gym back home and then I’ve been back on it since New Year.

“I have trained diligently and sharply and I’ve got a great game plan. I’m used to the big stage as I’ve been on it since 2010 in the Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games and on some big events as a professional. I thrive under the bright lights.

“This fight means the world to me. It is a massive piece of history for both of us and this gives me the chance to cement my name in boxing. I’m on the cusp of something great and having the fans there gives you that extra bit of butterflies too.

“It’s a shame that there can’t be more fans there, but they’ll just make it bigger better and special. They give you that extra fire and determination and I’m relishing this opportunity and can’t wait.”

Josh Taylor is setting his sights on making sporting history as he prepares to take on Jose Ramirez in their huge undisputed showdown next week.

IBF and WBA super-lightweight champion Taylor (17-0, 13 KOs) faces WBC and WBO super-lightweight champion Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) on Saturday 22 May, with the event taking place at Las Vegas’ newest world-class casino resort, Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.

A victory for Taylor would see him go down in both Scottish and British boxing history, and the ‘Tartan Tornado’ insists he has done everything in his power to make that happen.

Taylor told IFL TV: “I’ve trained hard and done everything I can do to the best of my ability. This is the best prepared I have ever been and I’m going to enjoy the ride.

“This is a colossal fight, not just for myself but for all of Scotland. I’d be the first person in Scotland to be a four-belt undisputed world champion, and the first undisputed champion since Ken Buchanan.

“To make sporting history and go into the history books is massive and gets my juices flowing. I’ve always dreamed of being undisputed champion and if you had told me a few years ago I’d nearly be here I wouldn’t have believed you.

“On paper Ramirez is my toughest fight to date. He’s a unified world champion and a decorated fighter, buy I can’t see him beating me, I can’t see it at all.”

A supreme combat for the undisputed super lightweight championship between American José Ramírez and Scottish Josh Taylor, on Saturday, May 22 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The winner of Ramírez vs. Taylor will become the second undisputed super lightweight champion by joining Terence “Bud” Crawford.

Ramírez, the former Olympian from California’s Central Valley, spent the better part of two months training in Riverside, California, alongside Robert Garcia, who has guided his in-ring career following his March 2018 title victory over Amir Imam.

Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) is the underdog for the first time in his professional career, as Taylor (17-0, 13 KOs) is a 2-to-1 favorite at most bookmakers.

Ramirez is aware of this, but it does not distract him heading into the sixth world title fight of his career.

Ramírez commented:

“I have never been the favorite. That is my mindset. I am fighting for my place in boxing history. No boxer of Mexican descent has held all four world titles.

“In my mind, I have to win this fight. I’m focused. I don’t let outside noise get to me. No matter what you do or who you beat, there will always be someone else out there. Right now, that person is Josh Taylor.

“We both wanted the fight and I respect him for accepting the challenge. Josh and I want to make history and I know I will be the best man on May 22nd. The odds are what they are, but the best super lightweight, the undisputed champion, will be crowned on May 22. ”

A contest for the undisputed super lightweight title between José Ramírez, and Josh Taylor, fight May 22, at a venue to be announced, is generating sparks of anticipation.

The winner of Ramírez vs. Taylor will become the second undisputed super lightweight champion, after Terence “Bud” Crawford.

“This is the best boxing has to offer. Two elite fighters in the prime of their careers colliding in a showdown that will define the undisputed world championship legacy. It is a true 50-50 fight, one that the fans and both fighters asked for,” commented promoter Bob Arum.

Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) has been a world champion since March 2018, when he ousted Amir Imam by unanimous decision to win the WBC crown. After four successful defences, he knocked out WBO champion Maurice Hooker in July 2019, subsequently defending his world titles by defeating Ukrainian Viktor Postol.

Taylor (17-0, 13 KOs) fought as a lightweight at the 2012 London Olympics, where he advanced to the knockout stages. While he didn’t turn pro until 2015, he won the 140-pound Commonwealth title in just his seventh professional fight. Taylor ousted Postol by unanimous decision in 2018 and won the IBF world title the following year with a decision over Ivan Baranchyk.

The Scot unified the IBF and WBA titles in October 2019, defeating Regis Prograis by majority decision in an intense slugfest. He made the first defence as a unified champion last September, stopping mandatory challenger Apinun Khongsong in the first round. Taylor hopes to make history as the first undisputed champion from Bonnie Scotland.

Two undefeated super lightweight kings, one undisputed title. The stakes don’t get any higher.

WBC/WBO champion Jose Ramirez, the pride of California’s Central Valley, will fight Scotland’s IBF/WBA champion Josh Taylor for the undisputed world championship Saturday, May 22. The winner will become only the second undisputed super lightweight champion of the four-belt era, joining pound-for-pound great Terence “Bud” Crawford.

Promoted by Top Rank, Ramirez-Taylor will be televised live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes (and simulcast on ESPN+) starting at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT. The location, venue, and undercard information will be announced shortly.

Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) has been a world champion since March 2018, when he toppled Amir Imam via unanimous decision to win the vacant WBC strap. Following the Imam victory, he hired noted trainer Robert Garcia, and the duo has combined to go 4-0 in world title fights. Ramirez knocked out Maurice Hooker in July 2019 to unify world titles and defended his belts last August with a majority decision over former world champion Viktor Postol. Ramirez, a proud son of Mexican immigrants who hails from Avenal, Calif., is an agent of social change in his community. He’s devoted his time and resources to myriad causes, including cancer research, water rights for area farmers, and COVID-19 relief for Central Valley field workers.

“I look forward to making history by becoming the first boxer of Mexican descent to hold all four major world title belts,” Ramirez said. “I dedicate this fight to the Central Valley farm workers, who are out there every day helping feed the world. This fight is big, but nothing is bigger than getting vaccinations to the farm workers right now in the Central Valley.”

“No excuses, no fake social media promises, no grandstanding. This is the best fighting the best at their absolute best,” said Rick Mirigian, Ramirez’s manager. “Jose will have his hand raised in the end, solidifying his status as a Hall of Famer.”

Like Ramirez, Taylor (17-0, 13 KOs) fought as a lightweight at the 2012 London Olympics, where he advanced to the Round of 16. While he didn’t turn pro until 2015, “The Tartan Tornado” won the Commonwealth 140-pound title in only his seventh pro bout. Taylor toppled Postol by unanimous decision in 2018 and won the IBF world title the following year with a decision over Ivan Baranchyk. He unified the IBF and WBA titles in October 2019, edging Regis Prograis by majority decision in a brutal masterpiece. He made his first defense as a unified champion last September, blasting out mandatory challenger Apinun Khongsong in the first round. Taylor hopes to make a little history of his own as the first undisputed, four-belt Scottish champion.
