Sheffield's next big star Keanen Wainwright gets first title fight | Boxen247.com

Naz Hamed, Kell Brook, Clinton Woods, Ryan Rhodes, Herol Graham, Dalton Smith, Sunny Edwards – the city of Sheffield has produced some of Britain’s best fighters over the years … could Keanen Wainwright be the next big name from the Steel City?

The 24-year-old ‘Sheffield Boxing Centre’ protégé has had fight-insiders buzzing with some eye-catching performances since turning pro in 2018.  Quiet outside the ring, ‘The Wolf’ has dynamite in both hands and has picked up some statement wins in his 8-1 (5) career by stopping usually durable fighters like Andy Harris, Sean Davis and Irvin Magno.

Next up, this Saturday November 19 at Rotherham’s Magna Centre, Keanen gets his first title fight taking on Victor Julio for the WBF International Lightweight Title LIVE on Fightzone.

Julio – a Colombian fighting out of Spain – is far more experienced with 16 wins from 22 pro bouts.  The 28-year-old – who has only ever been stopped twice and has been the championship distance plenty of times – will provide a good yardstick for where Wainwright is at … and the Sheffield man can’t wait get under the lights and put on another show-stealing performance.

“I’m excited.  I’ve got a 10-round fight for a title – my first one.  I’ve been lined up for the Central Area before but it’s fallen through, and this is also my first 10-round fight, if it goes that far.

“This guy’s got the best record since I turned pro.  He’s done the eight and ten rounds distance a few times – so he’s durable.  He has it in the tank to go into the later rounds and he’s won a few of those distance fights too.  So, it’s an interesting one – I just need to show my skills, open him up and see if I can take him out of there. If I can stop him it’ll be a statement, and that’s what the fans want to see.

“It’d be lovely to box for the English or British next year, or even a European or Commonwealth.  I just want to see who’s got the titles and start knocking on their doors.”

Fight Academy’s Steve Crump has been singing Keanen’s praises since his debut and has no doubts he will fulfil his huge potential: “I knew Keanen was going to be a star when I first saw him fight.  He’s got a great boxing brain, is very measured in the ring but can finish a fight at any time.  He’s just got natural power and that makes him really exciting to watch.

“Sheffield has got an amazing history and is associated with so many of Britain’s top boxers over the years.  Keanen is being built up brilliantly and this fight on Saturday is another good test for him in just his tenth fight.

“It’s great that Fightzone is giving him the exposure he deserves.  It’s such a ground-breaking platform and brilliant for fight fans who are able to follow the journey’s of these fighters who they would normally never get to see.”

What’s better on a Sunday afternoon than a quality show of professional boxing … including a British Title fight!

On April 3rd at the Rotherham Magna Centre; flyweight Tommy Frank will put his Lonsdale Belt on the line in what should be an absolute barnstormer against Yorkshire rival, Craig Derbyshire.

Don’t be fooled by Craig’s 8-28-3 (2) record, the Doncaster man is a real threat. Heading into the biggest fight of his life, ‘Dynamite’ has won three of his last four, picked up the English super flyweight crown, and has taken time off work for a full training camp – dedicating himself to overcoming Frank.

The pair have met previously, in 2018, with ‘Super’ Tommy boxing his way to a 10-round shutout win. Since then the fighter who was born with a hole in his heart has moved to 15-2-0 (3) and – along the way – added numerous belts to his collection including Commonwealth, International, and the British Championship.

Ahead of the Fight Academy show, which will be broadcast LIVE/FREE on Fightzone, both champion and challenger chatted to renowned fight-game journalist Steve Lillis about the big fight, and why they will come out on top… check it out below:

Quiet and unassuming, Keanen Wainwright couldn’t be any different in the ring!

‘The Wolf’ can box, is clinical, and has very heavy hands evidenced by his record of seven wins, one defeat, four KOs. Tellingly though, the 24-year-old is knocking out fighters that very rarely get stopped – including well-known durable journeymen Andy Harris and Sean Davis, as well as ‘come to win’ fighters like Joe Ducker and Irvin Magno.

The southpaw is next out this Sunday April 3rd on the undercard of stable mate Tommy Frank’s British Flyweight Title defence against Craig Derbyshire at the Rotherham Magna Centre, LIVE on Fightzone.

Ahead of the night, the protégé from The Sheffield Boxing Centre says he would love to fight for the British Title by the end of this year … with Campbell Hatton in the opposite corner.

“I’m on a good KO streak at the moment and if I get another one in this next fight then I’ll start believing the hype about myself!

“To be honest, at this stage, I don’t just want to be walking through people because you don’t learn much but I’m never going to pull my punches because we’re in there to hurt each other at the end of the day.

“I do take my time in the ring. I never go in all guns blazing and am patient but when I do eventually catch them they seem to get knocked out! It’s funny because when I was an amateur, Glyn [Rhodes] used to tell me that I had to hurt people to keep them off – now, he’s telling me to slow down!

“The way that Campbell [Hatton] and myself are progressing as pros, at the end of the year that could be a massive British Title fight. It’d be a great fight between us, Campbell fought Joe Ducker in his last fight – who I’ve beaten – and he did really well.  He boxed great and it was one of his best performances.

“I don’t think Campbell had much of an amateur career and he’s picking up loads in the pros. He’s still learning but the progress he’s making is great and that’s why I believe a fight between us towards the end of the year would be really good. He does get caught a bit though and he’d be in trouble if I caught him … but any lightweight would!”

Sheffield banger Keanen Wainwright gets fight number eight at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Arena on Saturday February 12, live on Fightzone.

On a show that also includes action from top heavyweight, Kash Ali; Keanen gets a good level-marker against a fighter who is always a hard night’s work, Sean Davis.

The Brummie has won 14 of 32 but, more tellingly, has only ever been stopped three times against top fighters – former European Champion Gamal Yafai, and top prospects Reece Mould and Michael Walsh.

Wainwright is also firmly in the ‘top prospect’ category, despite an early defeat on his 6-1 (3) record.  After a winning 2018 debut, Wainwright was dropped heavily before losing on points to Boris Shikunov in his second fight .  Russian Shikunov looked very strong on the night though and his patchy pro record was deceiving, with an extensive kickboxing career behind him.

Keanen is now on a five fight winning streak, and goes into the Ponds Forge contest on the back of two impressive KOs.  Trained by former pro, Glyn Rhodes, and a stable mate of British Flyweight Champ, Tommy Frank, the 24-year-old has his sights firmly set on the Central Area Title in 2022, but is looking to put on an impressive performance for Fightzone viewers first.

“I can’t wait for this fight, I’m so excited, and it’s brilliant that Fightzone are covering the show too. I’ve been watching some top fighters on there, and now people can watch me.

“I’m expecting a tough fight from Shaun.  He nearly always goes the distance and he has some good names on his record.  I think he actually went 12-0 when he started too, and I’ve not managed to do that!

“This is a six-rounder, and I always go in the ring hoping to do all the rounds to get more experience but I’m never going to hold my shots back because I always want to hurt them before they hurt me!

“If I did stop him then it’ll put me in the company of some good fighters and it would show I have knockout power.  People say I’m heavy handed but the shots I’ve knocked people out with I haven’t even loaded up, I’ve just landed!

“I’d like to get the Area Title in early doors this year.  I’ve been matched for it twice before and opponents have pulled out – people are asking for too much money to get in the ring with me!  I just don’t understand that, if you think you’re good enough then you should back your ability and go for it!

“I’m really not fussed about being looked after either or having easy fights.  I want to give people their money’s worth, and as long as I give my all, that’s all that matters.”

Fight Academy’s Steve Crump, said: “Keanen’s one to watch, we really do think highly of him.  He learned a lot from that early defeat and has pushed on with some very impressive performances.  Sean will be a good test for him on Saturday, and I’m looking forward to seeing how he gets on.”

Kash Ali gets headline honours on Saturday February 12 at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Arena, on the first Fight Academy and Fightzone event of 2022.

Looking to continue an impressive run of form, the top rated heavyweight will take on Germany’s Huenkar Polat in – what could well be – a risky encounter. Young and ambitious, the 21-year-old German has won eight of 11 fights, with every one of his victories ending by KO. A heavy-hitter, Polat will head into the contest knowing that he can launch his career into orbit by landing just one of his big shots.

This year is a pivotal one for Kash – the big man from Rotherham. After claiming the IBF European Heavyweight Title with an impressive stoppage win over rated Czech fighter, Tomas Salek, in May last year; the 29-year-old is on the up and ready to prove himself at top contender level.

Kash’s game has improved immeasurably since teaming up with trainer and former heavyweight, Richard Towers. With just a single loss on his 21-fight record – a notorious disqualification defeat to Liverpool’s David Price – manager and promoter, Dennis Hobson, is convinced he has a man on his hands who will put some notable heavyweight noses out of joint this year.

“We’ve guided Kash perfectly since he’s been with us,” said Hobson, who has an enviable reputation for manoeuvring fighters onto world honours. “He has been developing – not just as a fighter but as a person – under Richard [Towers], and he has it all; a great skillset, the physical attributes and he hits very hard.

“It was unfortunate that we weren’t able to get him out before Christmas to make another defence of his IBF Title, but we’ve now got him in with this young fighter with a big punch, who will be coming to the UK to make a name for himself. If Kash can get through this fight, then we’ll be looking to let him loose on a big name.”

“We have some really exciting plans for the Fightzone channel this year, and we’ve made our ambitions clear with an already packed schedule of shows from February through to April,” explained Fightzone’s Chief Operating Officer, Asif Vali.

“Fightzone has achieved so much already since its launch just six months ago and has put on some great title fights and shows. We’re looking forward to working with promoters from up and down the country, and I’m excited to kick off 2022 with this show in the great boxing city of Sheffield.”

The Fight Academy stable is packed with young talent, none more so than Tommy ‘Hitman’ Hodgson.

A former England international and senior ABA winner, the 25-year-old has made a big impression already, with promoter Dennis Hobson – who has worked with some of the world’s best fighters – believing Hodgson’s debut last year was the best he’d ever seen.

Since that debut, Tommy has notched up another brace of wins, and gets his fourth outing on February 12 at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Arena on a card headlined by heavyweight Kash Ali, live on Fightzone.

All three of Hodgson’s fights to date have been in Yorkshire, but that’s set to change for the man from North Shields who gets a Northeast homecoming on March 19 when he will make an eagerly anticipated appearance in Newcastle on another Fightzone show.

Ahead of that homecoming, the Newcastle United fan is slated to take on well-respected journeyman, Lee Connelly, on the Ponds Forge show.  Connelly, from Derbyshire, has only failed to hear the final bell eight times in 81 contests, and is known in the game as tough, durable and always up for a fight.

“I feel like I’m developing really well, and have shown a bit of everything,” said Tommy, who is trained by Dean Laing and Ross Wilkinson.  “I’ve shown I can box and get stuck in when needed. I’ve got a good boxing brain and can cover all aspects of the game.  I just need to keep busy, that’s the main thing.

“I’m pleased to be doing six rounds for the first time on this upcoming show.  You’ll see the best of me when I start getting into longer fights.  Lee [Connelly] will give me the rounds, one hundred per cent and it’s early in my career so I want to learn as much as possible.

“He’ll have a go and he’s a tough lad, and that’s what I want. I want to show some improvements, be nice and sharp and not get caught with anything silly. I’d love to get the stoppage, and if it comes it comes, and if not that’s fine.

“I’m looking forward to fighting again in Sheffield.  When it comes to Newcastle though it’ll be a different story. I’ve had so many people messaging me asking when I’m fighting at home.  When my fans go to Sheffield they’re the noisiest and craziest there, so it’ll be absolutely buzzing when I fight in Newcastle.”

Last time out in June, the Bradford man was punch perfect when demolishing former top amateur Liam Shinkwin, 9-2-1, in just three rounds to record the best win of his 17-0 (4) career.

With a fight against English champ Myron Mills mandated for the early part of 2022, Ghaz’s future is looking extremely bright and the confident 25-year-old nicknamed ‘Hurricane’ says fight fans can expect another dazzling performance against Finiello before he takes the English crown from Mills in the New Year (watch the video below).

On what will be a lively night of boxing at Ponds Forge, chief support will see promising local fighter Keanen Wainwright in his first title fight against Liverpool’s Tom McGuinness for the Central Area Lightweight belt. Both men have just a single defeat from six and seven bouts respectively, and this is a fight where the outcome is genuinely hard to call.

Tommy Frank vs. Rosendo Hugo Guarneros

Another great night of boxing awaits Fightzone viewers on Friday June 18, with Sheffield’s Tommy Frank headlining in a crossroads career fight.

The popular flyweight meets former opponent Rosendo Hugo Guarneros at the Sheffield Fightzone Arena, hoping to reverse the only defeat on his 13-1 (3) record and pick up the IBF Inter-Continental Flyweight Title.

The pair met in December last year with Guarneros upsetting the odds and returning to Mexico with the belt.  In an entertaining tussle, the action was hotting up before being dramatically halted with a disconsolate Frank forced to retire after eight rounds with an injury.

Determined to get his career back on track, ‘Super’ Tommy has absolute tunnel vision on Guaneros.  The North American has lost just four times in 24 outings – one of those reverses coming to IBF World Flyweight Champ Sunny Edwards – and is a typical tough Mexican operator.

With Sheffield rival Edwards on Fightzone commentary duties on the night and with the pair on a collision course if they both keep winning, Tommy cannot afford another slip up and says he is totally focused on the immediate challenge ahead of him.

“I can’t thank my team enough for getting me this opportunity.  It was my first defeat and I want to right that wrong, put it to bed and prove I’m the better fighter.  It’s been a while to get here, but I can’t wait for my chance at redemption.  I’m approaching this like the first fight never happened.  It’s back to square one; it’s a fight I need to win to get back in the IBF world rankings and push on with my career.

“I’m expecting a better version of Guaneros, he’s coming back over here as the champion, and that will give him confidence.  He’ll be ring walking and weighing in second, you have to give him respect and he’ll be well up for it.  He knows he hit the jackpot in December, and he’s not going to want to let go of that title.  I wasn’t finding him too difficult first time around and felt like the fight was going my way before the injury, but I’m expecting him to be sharper and stronger … and that OK because I will be as well.”

The pick of the undercard will see Leeds’ exciting former English middleweight champ Reece Cartwright, 22-1 (13), return to the ring after over two years out.  Also on the card will be Sheffield fighters Keanen Wainwright and Perry Howe; Michael Gomez Jr from Manchester; and debutants Jake Andrew (Oldham), Marshall Gott (Sheffield), Adam Sircat (Buxton) and Linzi Buczynski (Manchester).
