Kirstie Bavington vs. Beccy Ferguson
The Hangar, Wolverhampton, England 1/10/21
It‘s been quite the year for Kirstie Bavington.
The Wolverhampton fighter has endured plenty of ups and downs already.
Bavington saw her dream holiday curtailed by COVID-19, a return to her teaching role at Beacon Hill Academy and being thrust into the Sky Sports spotlight against stellar amateur-turned-pro Sandy Ryan.
After that rollercoaster, she’s looking forward to being on home soil this weekend as she appears at The Hangar on Friday October 1.
Bavington, who works as a PE Teacher, was due to see out July travelling Route 66 – the famous 2,448-mile road across the States – but that was cancelled despite being planned for the past three years.
It was a bitter blow but sweetened when she got the call to fight Ryan on Matchroom Boxing’s Fight Camp card in July.
It was a tough night’s work against a very capable Ryan but Bavington enjoyed the experience.
“It’s been a dream of mine to get on the TV so I’m happy I got that fight,” she said. “I will fight anyone.
“I was training all through lockdown. It was so hard to keep motivated when nothing was happening but I’m glad I did.
“She’s was tough and had that GB pedigree but it was a good experience for me and one that I’ve learnt from.”
After that fight in July, Bavington managed to finally get away and, whilst it wasn’t Route 66, a trip to Barbados allowed her to unwind and refocus before returning to her teaching position and, just as importantly, her training ahead of her homecoming on Friday.
“I managed to get away on holiday in the end!” she joked. “I had a nice little break and have been back on it ever since. I’m really looking forward to being under those lights in Wolves on Friday.
“It’s brilliant to fight on the big TV shows but it’s just as good to be fighting in my home town with my people all there cheering me on. I’m going to put on a show.”
Bavington takes on Beccy Ferguson on the undercard of Conah Walker versus Jamie Stewart for the Midlands Area Welterweight Title.
The undercard is stacked with local talent as debutants Jermaine Osbourne-Edwards (Wolverhampton), Ollie Cooper (Cannock), Lewis Morris (Walsall) and Alex Round (Wednesfield) are all in action alongside Dudley’s Ethan Collins
All boxers weigh-in at The Hangar on Thursday at 1:30pm. The event is free to the public to attend and we’ll be giving away a pair of tickets to what is fast approaching a SELL OUT Show!
