Michael McKinson Beats Chris Kongo on Points in Gibraltar
Michael McKinson earned a huge victory as he defeated Chris Kongo to win the WBO Global welterweight title.
The two men were competing at the Europa Point Sports Complex in Gibraltar, live on Sky Sports Box Office and DAZN, and it was a breakthrough performance from McKinson (20-0, 2 KOs) to secure the win against Kongo (12-1, 7 KOs).
The Portsmouth fighter started the fight extremely fast, dropping Kongo in round one, before going on to dominate large portions of the fight from that point on.
It went the distance, with the three judges scoring it 97-93, 96-94 and 95-94 to earn McKinson a fantastic unanimous decision victory.
McKinson said: “I feel on top of the world. I want to thank everyone who gave me this opportunity. I’ve been waiting a long time for this, this is my 20th fight and I’m finally on the big stage.
“I’m finally getting the credit I deserve. I am here to stay. I told my daughter I would bring a belt back to her tomorrow, and I’m doing it. I did her proud.”
Elsewhere on the card, JJ Metcalf was in action, as he was involved in a tremendous British super-welterweight title fight with Ted Cheeseman.
Metcalf showed incredible heart and courage throughout the fight, but in the end was unable to come out on top, with Cheeseman earning the win.
Jono Carroll was also competing on Saturday, facing previously undefeated Romic Airapetean on a bill at the Clue Sga Heredia in Malaga, Spain.
It was a brilliant showing from Carroll (19-2-1, 5 KOs), who picked up a knockout victory to get back to winning ways.
