Lightweight contender Luke Campbell, has announced through his social networks his retirement from boxing at the age of 33.

Campbell retires from his 8-year professional career, with a record of 20 wins, with 16 knockouts and 4 losses, after winning a gold medal in the bantamweight division at the 2012 London Olympics.

He explained that spending more time with his family is the main reason and priority in making this decision. His most recent fight was seven months ago against Ryan Garcia at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The World Boxing Council and its President Mauricio Sulaimán reiterate their admiration for Luke and wish him great success in his future ventures.

“I’m a professional boxer and this is a huge fight so I have to prepare like I would every other fight whether it’s Christmas or not,

“It’s a big sacrifice to be away from my boys and my wife and family, it’s the hardest thing about what I do, but I won’t be doing this forever. When the fight was rearranged for January 2nd I knew what I had to do and it’s time to take care of business and we’ll do all the celebrating together when I come home.

“It’s been a frustrating year with everything but I’ve had two fights planned that have been pulled which was frustrating.

“What that means is I have been through two training camps this year already and now this one, so I’m in great shape and the fact I’ve not fought since 2019 is not a problem. I’ll be ready for him and I’m ready to start the new year in style.”

“Firstly, I was happy for Lopez and his team,” Campbell told Sky Sports. “I’m glad he got the win.

“I said to everybody after the Lomachenko fight, that Lomachenko won’t be the same. I said I put a big dent in Lomachenko that night – and he’s not going to be the same. He didn’t throw a punch for seven rounds, so Lopez could do what he wanted for seven rounds. I wish that Loma would have turned up for my fight.

“He was moving around and throwing feints, but he wasn’t throwing anything, and Lopez had the range to do what he wanted, but like I say, hats off to Lopez he did a great job staying focused in there and switched on, and getting the win. I think [Lopez] is a great guy, him and his Dad. We’ve shared rounds together, got mutual respect for each other, so I was happy he go it. Got to take care of business first and then I can move on to these guys.”

“The Garcia vs Campbell boxing event presented by Golden Boy and DAZN at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino has been postponed following a positive COVID-19 test result from Luke Campbell,” Golden Boy confirmed in a statement. “Campbell is doing well, but the fight will need to be rescheduled.

“As we know, fans are really looking forward to this great fight. All parties involved are working to get a new date scheduled as soon as possible.

“[Campbell] has completed isolation and resumes training shortly but will not be fit for Dec 5,” Hearn revealed on Tuesday. “We are working on a new date with Golden Boy and DAZN, and only anticipate a very short delay to this great fight.”

“This will put me at the top of the lightweight division. I have to go through Campbell,” Garcia (22) told Sky Sports.

“He hasn’t fought anybody except Lomachenko and Jorge Linares and he lost those. If your experience is losing? I don’t want that experience. This is his ‘get to the top or not’ type of fight. Me? I’m still that young gun coming up.

“I keep hearing him say he’s going to knock me out! He’s not. He couldn’t even knock out a 126lbs Lomachenko. He’s not going to beat me. He’s talking a good game. But he’ll learn real quick that I hit harder than Lomachenko. This is his last chance but I’ll put the final nail in the coffin [of his career]. He fought Yvan Mendy, who I’ve never heard of, and he lost! So what experience does he have, really?”

“I train with the pound-for-pound champion (Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez). He will learn real soon that I’m not there just to do Instagram videos. You’ll see how much I bring. I’m a true fighter, not an Instagram fighter. I may do all that [social media] because I can and I have the opportunity, but I feel disrespected big time as a fighter.”

“I’m not here to play games. I’ll start throwing my punches and he’ll see. If I catch him clean, if he gets hurt, he’s out of there. There will be no escape. It’s over, the moment he gets hurt.”
