Martínez vs. Arroyo

World Boxing Council flyweight champion Julio Cesar “Rey” Martinez has withdrawn from his mandatory title defense against McWilliams Arroyo, in Miami, due to a hand injury.

“Rey” has revealed an injury to his right hand, with messages on his Instagram Account.  Rey who`s apologized, says that he and his team advised Eddie Hearn of Matchroom about the injury, following the final press conference. He was previously due to fight Arroyo on August 15th in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but had to withdraw due to a gastric problem.

He then fought and stopped Moises Calleros in 2.42 of the second round, in a bout at TV Azteca`s Studios last October 23rd. Calleros had come in a whopping 5.4lbs over the limit, but heavy handed Rey gave him short shrift.

Rey was then to have fought Francisco Rodriguez on December 19th at the Alamodome in San Antonio but was again ill.

This Saturday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, Julio César “Rey” Martínez, will defend his World Boxing Council flyweight crown, against the Puerto Rican McWilliams Arroyo, in the same card as Canelo vs. Yildirim.

It`s. the third defense for “Rey” Martínez (17-1, 13 KOs) on this occasion against Arroyo (24-4, 15 KOs).

This fight was scheduled for last August, but ‘Rey’ could not fulfill because he fell ill, and then he ended up fighting in October in Mexico City against Moisés Calleros.

Both fighters are already in Miami, ready to step into the ring and provide a classic Mexico vs. Puerto Rico.

A green and gold holiday, it faces the Puerto Rican veteran McWilliams Arroyo, against the Mexican “Mini Marciano” Julio César “Rey” Martínez, on the same card as Canelo Vs Yildirim, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Florida.

Thirty-five-year-old McWilliams (20-4, 15 KO`s) is nine years older than the champion. This is his third attempt at a world title and time is running out to emulate his twin brother McJoe, who was a world champion. McWilliams couldn’t have picked a more daunting Macbeth challenge. Rey Martínez tends to be shorter than his opponents, but what he lacks in height, he invariably and intimidatingly makes up for with the power of his punches. In that department he does not fall short.

Good things sometimes come in smaller packages. A reporter once told Jack Dempsey that most of his opponents were taller than him. The “Manassa Mauler” replied emphasizing that they seemed much smaller, once they were lying on their backs.

Rey is a ruthlessly efficient KO artist, possessing the power and relentless relentlessness of a crushing wrecking ball. In Joe Frazier’s vogue, he has the power to demolish the walls of cities and citadels.

Rey’s only loss came in his career debut against Joaquín Cruz with a close split decision loss. Since then, he never looked back. He graduated in his seventh fight by defeating Edgar Sosa by UD. Thirteen of his seventeen fights have not gone the distance.

Rey, who is from the world-famous boxing cradle of Tepito, invariably does altitude training in the cold climates of the Otomi Ceremonial Center to gain air, which translates into heaps of mcduff plum.

He seems to have a predilection for hitting the British. He knocked out Andrew Selby of Wales, then dropped WBC flyweight champion Charlie Edwards with an avalanche of punches, but couldn’t contain his momentum, landing a punch while Charles was down on the mat. So, he was declared no decision and had to regroup for his WBC title shot again.

At a WBC press conference at the Railroad Workers Union Headquarters in the heart of Mexico City, a reporter asked Charlie, where was he doing his altitude training? Charlie was puzzled. That led to itching and then Charlie was knocked down.

After stopping former champion Cristofer Rosales in nine rounds for the title vacated by Charlie, Julio César faced Welshman Jay Harris, who bravely stood up to lose for UD, after enduring a fearsome onslaught.

Julius Caesar is as fearless as he is fearsome during the deal in question. He often states at press conferences with a carefree laugh: “With everything but fear.” It doesn’t bode well for his opponents, who are often outmanoeuvred!

Rey has said and repeated that he wants to become a unified champion, before advancing and ascending to the super flyweight division. But he certainly won’t overlook McWilliams, who defeated Carlos Cuadras for the WBC silver super flyweight title.

Although McWilliams lost by UD to Roman “Chocolatito” González for the WBC flyweight title, he gave a very good account of himself. He also lost to Kazuto Ioka for the WBC silver super flyweight belt and to Amnat Ruenroeng for the IBF flyweight title.

Carlos Buitrago knocked him down twice, but McWilliams got up each time and won for UD. In his professional career, McWilliams has yet to be arrested. He is a skilled and durable boxer. His ability to withstand blows will be put to the test like never before next Saturday against a younger and fresher champion, who is ruthless… isn’t he?

McWilliams insists he retains hunger and ambition to go the distance, and has worked for this fight like never before. He’s had a long time to do this, because he didn’t fight at all last year. By contrast, last year Rey defeated Harris. Then he did quick work with Moisés Calleros.

Rey’s boxing sometimes shows a rudimentary lack of finesse, but he more than makes up for it with incredible power. McWilliams has the ability and potential to overcome it, but for how long? Twelve rounds is a long time!

Number one WBC ranked mandatory challenger for the World Boxing Council flyweight Green and Gold Belt, Puerto Rican McWilliams Arroyo, will try to win when he faces formidable and forbidding champion Julio Cesar “Rey” Martínez, from Mexico on February 27 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Florida.

“I feel very motivated because finally the fight is going to take place and I know that they are going to enjoy it to the fullest. We want to return with the world title, so we have been working extra hard to arrive in excellent condition, ”said Arroyo, who trains with Anthony Otero.

About his rival Arroyo stressed; “He is a good champion, very strong and with qualities. He has already defended his title successfully, but now it is my turn to do everything possible to bring the championship to Puerto Rico. We are going to fulfill my dream of winning the WBC Green  and Gold  title. ”

Arroyo is a tough opponent who has faced and defeated the best super flyweights of the moment. Now, in a division in which he feels more comfortable, McWilliams hopes to become the next flyweight champion of the WBC and at the same time add another brilliant chapter to the rivalry between Mexicans and Puerto Ricans.

Mandatory challenger for the World Boxing Council flyweight title Puerto Rican McWilliams Arroyo, will challenge Mexican champion Julio Cesar “Rey” Martínez on February 27 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.

Martínez and Arroyo were scheduled to clash last year, but due to the champion becoming ill, the fight was postponed.

“I feel very motivated because finally the fight is going to take place and I know that fans will enjoy it to the fullest. We want to return with the world title to my place, so we have been working extra hard to arrive in excellent shape to the fight,” said Arroyo, who trains with Anthony Otero.

“Julio Cesar Martínez is a good champion, being very strong and with great qualities. He has already defended his title successfully, but now it is my turn to do everything possible to bring the championship back to Puerto Rico. We are going to fulfill the dream of winning the WBC Green and Gold Belt.”

McWilliams is no slouch. He has great victories against Carlos Cuadras and Carlos Buitrago as well as outstanding performances against Kazuto Ioka and Román “Chocolatito” González.

On February 27, another fiercely brilliant chapter of Mexico vs. Puerto Rico, with WBC flyweight champion, Julio César Martínez defending his belt against the # 1 ranked fighter, McWilliams Arroyo.

For JC, this fight is an crucial test. The rivalry between Puerto Rico and Mexico is already a tradition. While for trainer Mauricio Aceves, better known as “El Chale”, a man who, although failed to shine as a boxer, now has a chance to shine as champion mentor.

For Mauricio, it was difficult to accept that his indiscipline and rebellion took him away from the dream of becoming a world champion. However, over the years and with the maturity necessary to face the mistakes of the past, he has channelled his experience to direct and help youngsters. One of them is Julio César Martinez, who`s flourished and  blossomed into his first world champion.

For Mauricio, the true meaning of being a world champion is being willing to face the best in the division, even if it represents leaving home or combatting  adversity. That  is why, challenging the Puerto Rican fighter and winning victory is so important.

However, and even when Julio is coming very strong, McWilliams Arroyo feels confident that he will be the new world champion. Now  in a division in which he feels more comfortable, the Puerto Rican is  confident in the strategy and work he has gained from coach Anthony Otero, known as “El Gallero”, who for many years has been in his corner polishing his skills of McWilliams and those of his brother McJoe.

For Anthony Otero, who has been in boxing for more than 24 years, it is important to work with discipline and a lot of dedication because with certainty, he knows  that fights are won in the gym, just as he did in 2018, when Arroyo defeated the former super flyweight silver champion WBC, Carlos Cuadras, a victory that showed the kind of talent he has.

Already with his sights locked in on the Puerto Rican McWilliams Arroyo, the flyweight champion of the World Boxing Council, Julio César “Rey” Martínez is determined to impress, with  a punctuation mark  victory.

“Rey” who’s known for his heavy hands, is making the third defense of the title against the mandatory rival Arroyo, on a date to be defined and is already in full training.

Although the fight with the Puerto Rican is his current laser beam focus,  Martínez has ambitious plans for the future and plans to go up to super flyweight to take on Juan Francisco Estrada and “Chocolatito” González.

Last August a health problem prevented him from fighting Arroyo. But now with a clean bill of health, the champ is preparing to return to the ring, determined to seek the knockout.

Martínez, who’s a puncher, but also a perfectionist, states that there are aspects in which he must improve, but that with the help of Mauricio Aceves and Eddy Reynoso he will triumph.

Ya con la mira puesta en el puertorriqueño McWilliams Arroyo, el campeón mosca del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo, Julio César “Rey” Martíne se enfoca en tener una carrera histórica que lo lleve a ser el mejor libra por libra.

El “Rey” Martínez  realizará la tercera defensa de su título ante el rival mandatorio, Arroyo, en fecha por definir y ya está preparandose para este importante compromiso.

Aunque la pelea con el boricua es su próximo compromiso, Martínez tiene ambiciosos planes a futuro y planea subir a supermosca para enfrentar a peleadores como ,  Juan Francisco Estrada o “Chocolatito” González.

Después de que en agosto pasado un problema de salud le impidió exponer su cetro ante Arroyo, la pelea ya fue ordenada por el WBC y el monarca se reporta listo para volver al ring y decidido a buscar el nocaut.

Martínez, aunque dejó en claro que va por buen camino en su carrera, reconoció que hay aspectos en los cuales debe mejorar, pero que de la mano de Mauricio Aceves y de Eddy Reynoso lo logrará.
