Maxi Hughes (defends IBO World Lightweight title against Kid Galahad): Only Barry knows if he’s the same after that KO. Speaking to Terri about it, she had the same with Alicia Baumgardner on the same night, but she’s exorcised those demons in March by getting back in the ring. I spoke to Tony Bellew, and he said, no-one gets to see if they have exorcised the demons until they get back through the ropes and get hit on the chin by eight ounce gloves. The form and momentum are with me, but I am underdog again and that’s something I am used to, it’s just how I approach things regardless of what people think, the bookies think; we’re confident as a team in what we’re doing and that’s the most important thing – getting my hand raised and hearing ‘and still’.

Kid Galahad (moves up to Lightweight to challenge Hughes): I always put big pressure on myself in every fight. I’ve got the underdog mentality, every fight is do or die and I must do a job on Maxi Hughes, and I will. This new weight I feel fresher, I’m not struggling, and I feel great.

With the Kiko Martinez loss, that’s boxing, it can happen, I went straight back into the gym. You (Eddie) said to me to go on holiday and have a break, but I had to get in the gym and clear my mind, think about how it went wrong, I know what I did wrong, we’ve adjusted it and on Saturday night we’ll see that.

Maxi’s mate Josh got KO’d by Mauricio Lara and he came back to win a World title, so it depends how you are built. I think if Maxi got KO’d the way I did, he would have been finished but I am a different gravy to him, and on Saturday we’ll see.

It’s not mind games, it’s the truth. I got KO’d by Kiko, he asked his trainer to pull him out of a fight because he had a bloody nose. That’s the truth, I’m not sugar-coating it, I would rather go out on my shield, that’s the difference in our mentalities.

Stefy Bull (manager of Maxi Hughes, trainer/manager of Terri Harper): Maxi has probably had the best rise in British boxing over the last few years, very unexpected with some fantastic wins and fights he wasn’t meant to win. The bookies have him as the underdog again and he relishes that. Maxi has been training for Barry for nearly 12 weeks, but we’ve had things thrown our way like the Ryan Garcia fight or the Jorge Linares fight, but Maxi has just stayed focused on Barry.

They might be counter punchers, but I don’t see this being a boring fight at all. They both have a lot of pride, it’s a Yorkshire derby, there’s a bit of needle between them, and I am looking forward to it as a fan, not just as Maxis’ manager. It’s intriguing with Barry coming up a couple of weights, but Maxi is in his prime, he’s not showing any signs of decline and he hasn’t dropped a round in his last two fights. A confident fighter is very hard to beat, Maxi is a big strong Lightweight, this is his division, and he’s not going to want to let the title go because a Maxi Hughes win does warrant a super-fight next that could be life changing. He is the easiest fighter to manage because he just says yes, or yes but can you get me a bit more money. He will fight anyone, and I think the fans are in for a fantastic night.

I think Barry is going to be better at Lightweight, I really do. Dominic is one of the best trainers in the world, he knows what he’s doing, and Barry will be rejuvenated, stronger and full of energy at 135lbs. I’ve been with fighters that struggle to make weight, Terri is one of them but the McDonnell twins, Robbie Barrett; we’re in a weight-making sport and some people that aren’t in boxing don’t realize how fatigued fighters come but they are still having to grind it out because they have that belt. So, I think Barry will be better, but Maxi is ready for that, and it’s going to be a better fight for it.

Dominic Ingle (trainer of Kid Galahad): I don’t think four pounds was going to be enough headroom for Barry, and a lot of fighters that move up from nine stone, they may have one fight at Super-Featherweight, but they tend to move up to Lightweight. It was always a struggle but when you are in the World champion position, you cannot really turn down fights as that belt is your bargaining power. Kiko still has fight in him, he proved that against JW when he broke his jaw, he’s a massive puncher, and Barry just got caught, and the resistance to the shots just wasn’t there.

Barry has never had a problem taking a shot, so I do believe it was down to making weight. So, I think we will see a different fighter on Saturday, a more hydrated and powerful Kid Galahad, back to his usual ways. Maxi is a good fighter and he’s come good the last couple of years and it’s his title to defend, but we’re here to take it and hopefully we do.

He can’t take any chances or leave anything to doubt, he’s got to put it on Maxi and leave no doubt. Maxi is a good boxer, he likes to move and can fight when he has to, but it’s the last chance saloon for Barry and he has to win and make a good impression if he wants the big fights at Lightweight. There’s pride on the line, they both have to win this, defeat for either of them is probably the end of the road.

Hannah Rankin (defending the WBA and IBO World Super-Welterweight titles against Terri Harper): I don’t believe Terri is big enough to be at this weight ad she’s going to find that out on Saturday. I’m a true 154lber, WBA and IBO World champion and I’m building my strength and development as a fighter, so I am looking forward to putting on a show.

Moving up so many weights, I don’t think she can be the same because things change when you add weight to your frame. I’m expecting the best version of Terri though, she’s a former World champion for a reason, I have a lot of respect for her and her team, but I don’t think she’ll be the same at 154.

There are some very exciting fights out there and a unification with Tasha Jonas is on the cards, that’s one of those things that just fuels my fore for the fight, I only see my arm being raised but those fights will have to wait, my focus is on Terri.

Terri Harper (moves up to challenge Rankin for the WBA and IBO titles): I’m excited, this is the first camp that I can say I’ve really enjoyed, not just because of the weight but everything else. I feel I have my chance to become World champion again, I’ve got the fire burning and I’m hungry for it and I know getting the win at the weekend will open even more doors, so I am excited.

People don’t realize that I walk around at 10/11/12st, so me cutting weight to get to Super-Featherweight, that was reckless, and I was fighting World class fighters under fueled, tired, and unhappy. So, when we got this chance to go up the weights, I just knew I would feel comfortable at the weight and go in there knowing I can handle myself.

I’ve matured as a fighter; I’ve experienced a lot of things. Hannah thinks I am quiet, timid, and shy but I’m here to show that I do have a voice and it’s not Stefy on my twitter, I can handle myself.

Cyrus Pattinson (faces Jorick Luisetto for the IBO Continental Welterweight title): I’m more than happy to step up, my camps haven’t been smooth sailing recently with fights falling through. So, this opportunity has come at the right time for me, and I believe that that it wouldn’t have come if I wasn’t ready, so I am going to get that title on Saturday.

I want these fights and these titles. I’ve been sparring 16 rounds in the gym with bigger lads, so I know that I am more than capable. All my years with Team GB, I’ve always been prepared to fight anyone and it’s onwards and upwards from here, I don’t want to stay in a comfort zone at all, and this fight has got me switched on.

Solomon Dacres (fights Dominic Akinlade over ten rounds): The Sokolowski fight was great, especially looking at what he’s done since then, and my last fight in July was a good test too. I just need to stay active; we’re moving up to ten rounders and kicking on to the next level, I’m being let off the leash.

I’m not here to hang about, I’ve got great stamina for a Heavyweight, and I train very hard, so let’s go to the ten rounders and push on to bigger fights. That’s what we’re in boxing for, to win titles, so let’s go and get those title fights. The next 12-18 months I feel we’re going to be knocking on the door for them.

Cheavon Clarke (fights Marcos Karalitzky): We’re here to step up, not hide behind mediocre fighter, I want to show the people what the excitement is about. You need experience, I don’t come to KO people but as and when it comes, I will take the opportunity. I know that you (Eddie) will navigate me as I need to be, and I’ll handle whoever is in front of me.

Junaid Bostan (2-0 and makes his Matchroom debut): I said to you in Sheffield, Eddie, get your pen and paper out as you will be signing me after this. I’m not surprised to be here, but I am privileged. I’ve got big things that I am planning, and I am going to make the most of every opportunity. I’m looking to put on a big performance on Saturday and carry on with my career. He’ll be 2-1 on Saturday night, I will do as I am told as I’m in good hands with my team.

Mohammed Sameer (4-0 Middleweight): I got the call last Friday from my manager Lee Eaton, I got tickets on Monday evening, and we’ve already sold 150, so we’ve got a lot of people coming on Saturday and they will make plenty of noise. I’ve always dreamed of being on cards like this so it’s a dream come true and I’m ready to perform on Saturday.

I’ve got an exciting style, I come to fight, and I am going to show everyone what I am about.

Rhiannon Dixon (Anthony Crolla-trained Lightweight, fighting Edina Kiss): When Anthony put that tweet out (about working hard) I thought ‘get the violins out!’ I’m the one making the weight, all he’s bothered about is his hair! I think it will be a good learning fight for me. She’s got a lot of experience, she’s been in with Amanda Serrano, Mikaela Mayer, so I am looking to put on a good performance.

We’re looking at stepping up in. 2023 and hopefully fighting for some titles, it’s an exciting time and going over to Spain last time out and dealing with that fight, I think it’s put me in good stead.

Hughes (25-2-2, 5 KOs) defends his title for the second time, after widely outpointing fellow Brit Ryan Walsh in March in his first defence, following his shutout win over the dangerous Giovanni Straffon to land the belt last September.

‘Maximus’ is riding the crest of a wave, unbeaten since November 2019 and enjoying the ‘Cinderella Man’ status that has come with his impressive run of form, that has seen him be linked with big time battles against Californian star Ryan Garcia and former World ruler Jorge Linares.

The Rossington man has put those thoughts to one side for this South Yorkshire derby though, with former IBF Featherweight ruler Galahad stepping up two weights in his ring return and looking for an immediate return to boxing’s top table – but his 32 year old opponent says Saturday night could be the end of the line for the Ingle Gym slickster.

“I hope he has a plan in place for life after boxing because after Saturday night he’s got nowhere to go,” said Hughes.

“He was Featherweight champion, and he was looking to go to Super-Feather, so I am surprised that he’s jumping up two weights to face me. It’s a high-profile fight, he’s been IBF champion and they usually regard their champions highly, so they may rank him highly, so beating KG should improve my ranking. It would be nice to get a top five ranking with them and move towards to a bigger fight. It’s the same every time for me, get this one won, and a bigger fight could be next.

“I don’t take boxing personally, this is my full time job and that’s where my mind is at. He’s in the way of me providing for my family. I’ the underdog and I love that. He was a World champion in his last fight so he’s a high-calibre opponent, that’s really getting the juices flowing.

“I have faith in my ability and where I am in my team. I’m not one for bold predictions – I just want a win, however it comes, and I believe I am going to get it.”

On a stacked undercard, Denaby Main’s Terri Harper (12-1-1, 6 KOs) leaps up in weight to challenge Scotland’s Hannah Rankin (12-5, 3 KOs) for her IBO and WBA Super-Welterweight World Titles in an intriguing England vs. Scotland clash.

Former IBO and WBC Super-Featherweight World Champion Harper lost her titles at the hands of the USA’s Alycia Baumgardner on the undercard of Galahad vs. Martinez last year before landing the WBA Intercontinental Lightweight Title against Yamila Belen Abellaneda in March.

A torn bicep suffered in sparring has ruled Leigh Wood out of his WBA Featherweight World Title defence against Mexico’s Mauricio Lara at the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham on Saturday September 24.

The show will go ahead, with Rossington’s Maxi Hughes defending his IBO Lightweight World Title against Sheffield’s former IBF Featherweight World Champion Kid Galahad in a huge Yorkshire derby at the top of the bill, live worldwide on DAZN (excluding Australia and New Zealand).

‘Maximus’ (25-2-2, 5 KOs), who is undefeated since November 2019, landed the IBO crown with a shutout points win over dangerous Mexican Jovanni Straffon in September last year before making a successful first defence against Ryan Walsh in March.

Galahad (28-2, 17 KOs) will be looking to return to winning ways up at Lightweight after suffering a shock knockout loss to Spanish veteran Kiko Martinez in what was supposed to be a routine maiden defence of his IBF title at the Sheffield Arena in November 2021.

Leigh Wood will defend his WBA Featherweight World Title against Mauricio Lara at the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham on Saturday September 24, live worldwide on DAZN (excluding Australia and New Zealand).

Wood (26-2, 16 KOs) memorably stopped Michael Conlan in the 12th and final round of his epic first defence of the WBA 126lbs title back in March, knocking the Irishman out of the ring in brutal fashion to end their Fight of the Year battle.

Maxi Hughes retained his IBO lightweight title as he defeated Ryan Walsh at the First Direct Arena on Saturday.

The two fighters met in Leeds, on the undercard of the IBF featherweight title fight between Kiko Martinez and Josh Warrington, live on DAZN.

Hughes (25-5-2, 5 KOs) was dominant throughout the majority of the fight, and while Walsh (27-4-2, 12 KOs) refused to give in and gave absolutely everything, there was only one winner at the conclusion of the fight.

After 12 rounds of action, the judges scored the fight 120-108, 119-109 and 118-110, with Hughes coming out on top and keeping hold of his belt.

Fight Notes: In round 1, Martinez was down and badly cut. Martinez was warned for hitting Warrington after the bell.

Round 2 saw a relentless Warrington continue from where he left off but was warned by the referee for illegal use of the head.

Round 3 saw Martinez coming forward with Warrington calm and calculated. The cut was bothering Martinez’s vision.

Round 4 and it is now more competitive between the two combatants. Martinez is now cut over both eyes.

Round 5 is more even with both landing. Martinez’s face is now a mess.

Round 6 and it’s Martinez on the front foot but is walking onto shots. There is concern from the Martinez corner.

Round 7 and after a good spell from Martinez, Warrington put it on Martinez and did not stop until the referee jumped in to save Martinez from further punishment. Time of the stoppage was 2:12 of the 7th round.

With the win, Warrington regains the IBF world featherweight championship.

Bridges out worked and out hustled Roman on the inside as well as landing some good punches to the body. Bridges was effective with her uppercut and took the lead from the outset.

Roman tried to make a fight out of it, but Bridges showed her championship heart, and was able to be very effective down the stretch to claim her first world title.

Bridges landed 205 of 645 punches; Roman was 156 of 430.

Bridges, 117.3 lbs of New South Wales, AUS won by scores of 100-91 and 97-93 twice and is now 8-1. Roman, 116.4 lbs of San Juan, ARG was a five year-champion, who had made seven defenses and is now 16-6-1.

After 12 rounds of action, the judges scored the fight 120-108, 119-109 and 118-110, with Hughes coming out on top and keeping hold of his belt.

“I’m confident because as I said last time, I was going to become World Champion and I did it. I said I was going to beat Kid Galahad within the distance, and I did. The same will happen on Saturday, I will beat Josh Warrington within the distance. Maybe he’s too confident and doesn’t understand he’s facing Kiko Martinez.

“Josh is a great boxer, he’s won some fantastic fights in his career, beating Frampton, Selby, Galahad and many more. He’s still a big name in boxing, I think he was doing well in the Lara fight until the accidental clash of heads. He’s still got credibility in the world of boxing, and I want to go on and beat him, knowing last time it wasn’t just luck when I won the world title against Kid Galahad.

“I’m confident because I’ve visualised this in training, I’ve visualised knocking Josh Warrington out. When I say something, I’ll do it, so you can’t just believe it and not follow through and do it. When I say things, I’m going to do it and I’m going to do it on Saturday night.”

Josh Warrington:

“I’m very excited, I’ve had a few sunbeds and my hair is looking on point, suit on. It’s a good occasion, the sun’s out, it kind of reminds me of four years ago when I first become World Champion – same kind of energy. I feel like the city is excited for Saturday night because they know what’s to come, World Championship will be staying in Leeds. I’m very grateful to Kiko for giving me this opportunity but the belt is staying here on Saturday night.

“I must have upset him in some way because he’s demanded this fight. I’ve said it in many interviews, it’s how this sport work, it goes in circles. We were meant to be sparring partners for the Lara rematch, it’s funny he’s gone on to win a World Title and his first defence is against me. He’s confident and I’m sure he would have trained hard, but I’ll be ready for everything he brings on Saturday night.

“I’ve trained for a hard twelve round fight, 5 years ago we shared some hard rounds but those five years ago my stock has risen since then. I’ve only gotten better and better, I’ve had some slip-ups in the last year but it’s time to get back on top.

“I only focus on winning; I know Kiko’s mentioned himself win or retire and putting himself under that pressure. I’m just focused on winning and having that hand raised, that’s how I see myself, being in that arena. And the new.

“My book has gone from potentially being in the bargain aisle of Asda to a best-seller, what a chapter this is. It’s all in my hands, I’ve got to do the business, it’s funny how this sport works. I’ve got to make sure my stars have aligned for a reason and go out there on Saturday night and do what I’ve done all camp. I’m trained hard, I’ve worked hard and I’m ready for anything.”

Maria Cecilia Roman:

“First and foremost, thank you to all the people who have made this possible. It’s a big night for me on Saturday, in my boxing career I’ve always set myself objectives and I’ve always managed to achieve those objectives – it comes from working hard. Now my ambition is to be the best in my division and Saturday will be another step to go on, my plan is going on and win other titles. This is going to be another objective I’m going to achieve on Saturday.

“It’s going to be a total war on Saturday, I think it’ll be great for all boxing fans and in particular female boxing fans. It’s going to be another successful defence for me on Saturday night.”

Ebanie Bridges:

“It’s absolutely unreal, to be a co-main event fighting in Leeds for a World Title, I just feel so grateful. Cecilia coming over here to fight me, I’m just so excited about this fight, I’ve been excited about having this for before it was even happening.

“I wanted this fight because I knew it was going to be a great fight, as in a fan-favourite kind of fight. Having the World Title on the line just makes everything even more exciting for me.

“Moving over here and doing my camp here with Mark [Tibbs] has been amazing, we’ve definitely gelled well, and I think I’ve definitely changed his opinion – how women train and our mindsets. I’m really excited to be Mark Tibbs and the whole families first female World Champion.

“This fight and becoming a champion is the exclamation mark on this part of my story, having the belt around my waist and proving you can really do things if you set your mind to it. Everything that I stand for, having that belt, for me is the final point of it.

“Without being a World Champion it’s a great story but being a World Champion means everything to me, it means a lot for the women out there. Being a World Champion would change my life and I’m really excited for that.

“I’m always ready, I’ve come through a lot of adversity in all of my fights, I don’t see me losing this fight. I’m literally going for it all and I believe it’s my time to win this fight.”

Maxi Hughes:

“We wanted this and not someone to come in and lay down, the last fight I was a massive underdog, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. In my mind it’s the same again, I like that he’s here talking, it takes words like that for the bookies to think he’s the favourite.

“I’m glad he’s up for it because I’ve had this fire in my belly for a while, but this fight in particular gives me this bit between my teeth. I’m glad it’s like this.

“One thing of how I approach every fight, I haven’t got that mindset or that chip on my shoulder. I’m the champion and he’s got to come and take my belt, although I’m the owner of this belt it can just be vacant, I’ve got to go and prove I’m worthy and that I deserve it. I’ve got to show I’m worthy to be the owner of that belt, it’s great being full-time but I haven’t taken it for granted because it’s taken me such a long time to be full-time.

“I know what it’s like going to work, getting up in the morning in shit weather and having to squeeze training in, a run here and there. I’m doing it properly now and I appreciate it, I’m not taking it for granted. I know how much it means and I’m not letting it slip. I’m not here enjoying it as a fan to enjoy the fight, this is how the rest of my career is going.

“Ryan’s cast his net out there but I’m not taking the bait. It doesn’t matter however the fight goes, I’ll do what necessary to win, however it comes. I’m fully prepared for whatever it is, just expect me to win.”

Ryan Walsh:

“I’m really enjoying not being hungry, thirsty, and just the usual stuff I think all my counterparts are feeling. It’s very alien to me.

“I do call to Maxi, you showed it when you caught Saffron that you’ve got that in you. It’s not a natural thing for you, you’re a southpaw. I’m calling that upon you, I’m beckoning you, I’ll stand in the middle of the ring, let’s adhere to the warrior god.

“No one’s fought me yet and not for a sustained period, even the two that beat me, that haven’t fought me. You want to fight Maxi, you want to inspire everyone else, I was inspired by Conlan and Wood.

“I haven’t had a fight of the year; I haven’t even been close and you [Maxi] have just been nominated for one of the boxers of the year. Let’s do it, why not, we’ve got twelve rounds which is a long time, and a fight will break out. When it does, I don’t want you to run away, let’s entertain the people.

“It’s a good story but let’s have it right, Liam won that fight against Maxi. As far as ending Liam’s career, he was sparring me at the start of this. I think Maxi should have a lot to thank Liam for because without COVID, he can’t be British Champion, he can’t IBO Champion because he was there. It’s my duty to step it, Maxi’s story doesn’t happen if Liam doesn’t get it.

“I haven’t even thought about defeat, I’ve never gone into a fight ever believing that the man can beat me. I’ve been told and I’ve got really honest brothers, when I fought Lee Selby, my brother didn’t want that fight. When we fought, I wasn’t good enough and was beat by experience, beat by the better man but he understood that I did have the style to beat that man, but I wasn’t good enough that night. I’ve made mistakes in the sport, but I won’t be making those mistakes against Maxi.”

Dalton Smith:

“My last couple of fights now have been step ups and these are the fights we have been asking for for the more titles. The fight that was originally scheduled got removed so we looked to Ray Moylette and thought he was the perfect opponent for my next fight.

“I know what Ray’s about and he knows what I’m about.

“We [Ray and Dalton] haven’t achieved what we have achieved by just playing around.

“There’s obviously going to be pressure on the ones who are coming up but I am confident in my abilities. I know the level where I am going to get at and this is just a stepping stone for me.

“Ray is no easy opponent. It’s a tough challenge, what I’ve got on Saturday night. I’ve got to bring something more than what I have in my previous 9 fights as a professional. And you’re going to see that.”

Ray Moylette:

“I’ve been reaching out to Matchroom for a long time because Matchroom is the benchmark for boxing especially in England and Ireland. I’m just grateful to have the opportunity and I’m excited to take it, so I’m ready for it.

“We all started boxing years ago and it’s always the dream to fight on the big shows and the big cards and thankfully now I have the opportunity to do that. I’ve been on the count for the last three years and then I can was sidelined for other boxers. I didn’t have the backend. But thankfully I kept myself in shape, ready, and in the position that when the opportunity came – I knew you’d come calling at some stage, but I didn’t think it would take three years to get on a card. – thankfully it did and I’m ready for it.

“I’m here as an opponent for Dalton on paper but in reality when I heard I got the opportunity to fight him, I was expecting a much harder fight on one of your shows.

“I’m coming off the couch and I’m ready to fight. I’d be daft not to take this fight that I know I can win.”

Skye Nicolson:

“I’m very excited. I promised the fans that I was going to be active and I’m definitely living up to that 3 weeks out and I’m back in.

“I have confidence in my ability, and I know what I’m capable of. I want to test myself against the best so I’m going to keep putting my hand up to fight the best girls.

“I’m expecting a tough fight and I know that Bec comes fighting. She’s no pushover so I’m just focusing on having a good performance and showing everyone a side of me that they haven’t seen yet.”

Bec Connolly:

“There wasn’t a role for me, as far as I know, I went out and got what I wanted and created my own role for myself because I was never going to be a walkover. I’m not the elite but we know if you want to get to the top, you’ve got to get through the gatekeeper.

“I’ve trained anyway, even if I wasn’t boxing, I love training. I have taken quite a few fights on a day’s notice because I do stay ready, and I do love what I do. Some things have gotten in the way and I’ve made some mistakes with opportunities that I’ve had but I’m not going to let that stop me. I’ll keep the smile on my face and keep trying until the day that I retire.”

Cory O’Regan:

“Obviously, this stage is a big stage so I want to put on a big performance in front of my home crowd.

“The preparation for this one has been ideal really.

“Looking forward to watching some really good boxing from not just Josh but everyone on this card.”

Mali Wright:

“Yeah 100%, I’m ready for this one.

“I’m going to put on a spectacular performance. Not sure how many rounds we are doing this time, 4 or 6, doesn’t make much of a difference.

“No slip-ups. You’ll see what I am about this time around.

“I’ve been traveling, sparring, getting in more rounds and I’m putting in the right work with the team in the gym.”

Calum French:

Maxi Hughes will make the first defence of his IBO lightweight title when he goes up against Ryan Walsh at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on March 26.

Hughes (24-5-2, 5 KOs) puts his belt on the line against Walsh (27-3-2, 12 KOs) on the undercard of Kiko Martinez’s IBF featherweight title fight against Josh Warrington, live on DAZN.

The two fighters spoke to the media at a press conference on Friday, and while they were both respectful of one another, they each made it clear they’re confident of triumphing.

Hughes said: “I knew in the last fight I could change mine and my family’s life forever, and I’ll keep that mindset. I’m treating this like I’m the challenger and that I’ve got to go rip that title to make sure it stays and comes back to me.

“I said in the build up to Straffon that this is not just a one off. This is how I want to keep living for the rest of my boxing career. This is how I want to be from here on out, and I will approach everything with that mindset.

“Ryan is a great fighter, and I’m looking forward to this fight. I’ve boxed his brother Liam, and I’ll make sure that I’m victorious on March 26.”

Walsh said: “I’m beyond excited. The fight came by surprise as I was made mandatory for the British and I was happy about that, but then this came along and it was a no brainer.

“I have a lot of respect for Maxi and his team. We have some history, and it’s the most excited I’ve been for a fight and I’ve been in this game for 21 years.

“My oldest brother has been telling me to be a lightweight for three years at least, so nobody is happier than Michael to see me there. We don’t want excuses, I want to perform at my best, and at lightweight I feel I can.

“For sure, we know Maxi better than anybody. Liam fought him and beat him. The Cinderella Man is the perfect tag you can put on him. I thought he was done after he fought Liam. I’ve got everything to gain and nothing to lose. We’re in his city, so there is no pressure on me. All the pressure rides on the champion.”

Newly-crowned IBO Lightweight World Champion Maxi Hughes has signed a multi-fight promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

In the form of his life, Yorkshire’s Hughes (24-5-2, 5 KOs) upset the odds to outclass Jovanni Straffon over 12 rounds at Emerald Headingley Stadium in Leeds on Saturday to wrestle the IBO 135lbs crown from the heavy-handed Mexican.

Many thought Straffon’s power would be a key factor, but ‘Maximus’ looked the more powerful out of the pair as he came so close to forcing a stoppage in round five, eventually taking the fight with wide scores of 120-107, 120-107 and 119-109 on the judges’ cards.

Hughes has now won the WBC International, British and IBO Lightweight Titles in his four fights since lockdown, being the better underdog in three of them, and the 31-year-old who is trained by Sean O’Hagan and managed by Stefy Bull has his sights set on a showdown with undefeated WBC Lightweight World Champion Devin Haney.

“Matchroom have provided so many opportunities for fighters, past and present, and to know those opportunities will be heading my way is all I could ask for,” said Hughes. “The victory wasn’t a surprise, not to me anyway, given the preparation I’d put in and the time we had spent tailoring our approach to deal with someone like Straffon. But to win every round and to feel that comfortable feels pretty epic in front of a Yorkshire crowd.

“It’s a pleasure to share a card with that amount of boxing talent and the fact that people think my performance stole the show feels unreal. I’m just glad I got to showcase my skills and make my team and family proud. I only spend a short time reflecting after any fight with Sean and the team, but after that I move on and we agree what step we take next. I’ll reflect properly on my achievements when I retire. I don’t intend to get too drunk on my own success.

“I’ve been on the domestic scene since Scotty Cardle and I fought him back in 2013. I’ve mixed it with the best British and European talent that was there at the time. Boxing careers don’t last forever so my hope is that Matchroom can deliver bigger fights than any of those I’ve had so far, to capitalise on my recent success.

“I’ve already spoken about Devin Haney simply because his opponents seems to be evading him. I might not be the ‘name’ he wants, but I’m game and willing to fight. If that doesn’t come off, then I’m only looking forward in the rankings. I’ll take whatever comes my way.”

Fight Notes: After repeated head-butts from Warrington, a nasty cut opened up on Lara’s eyelid. The doctor advised in-between round 2 and 3 that Lara could not continue, and as 4 rounds had not been completed, the result was a technical draw. If 4 rounds had been completed, it would have gone to the judges scorecards. This was not to be.

Hopefully they can do it for a third bout.

Fight Notes: The bout went the 10 round distance with Taylor winning every round with the score 100-89 x3. Taylor was credited for a knock down in round 8, but on replay you could see Han was off balance with Taylors head coming underneath Han’s shoulder.

It was a frustrating night for Taylor in a scrappy affair with Han making it difficult for Taylor to land clean.

Fight Notes: Benn looked much improved in this bout and probably learned more from this than all the others combined. Benn was the stronger, harder puncher and quicker, even though it never looked like he was going to knock out Granados.

At times, it appeared that Granados had more to give, showing glimpses of being able to connect on Benn. He didn’t, and seemed happy to make it through to the final bell.

The judges scores were all in favour of Benn, by scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 97-93.

Fight Notes: Maxi Hughes put on a boxing display and was punch perfect in beating Straffon. In round 5, Straffon was nearly stopped as Hughes had him going with the referee close to stopping the bout. He got through the crisis but was beaten round after round.

Maxi Hughes is the new IBO world lightweight champion.

Fight Notes: After Bridges starting well, she lowered her workrate as Gangloff came into the fight. Gangloff seemed to have done enough to win the decision but yet again, another odd decision. Referee Steve Grey’s scorecard was 77-76 in favour of Bridges. The DAZN commentary team had Gangloff the winner as well.

Maxi Hughes continued his incredible form as he defeated Jovanni Straffon to win the IBO world lightweight title on Saturday.

The fight was taking place on the Mauricio Lara vs. Josh Warrington 2 undercard at Headingley Stadium in Leeds, and was broadcast live on DAZN.

Hughes (24-5-2, 5 KOs) was in control straight from the very first bell, with Straffon (24-4-1, 17 KOs) unable to cope with the fantastic boxing skills of the Yorkshire man.

It looked like Hughes may have got the stoppage after a huge onslaught in round five, but Straffon was able to survive the round. It didn’t deter Hughes though, as he continued to win round after round, with the fight going the distance.

The judges scored it 120-107, 120-107 and 119-109, continuing the incredible momentum of Hughes, who has now won the WBC International, British and IBO lightweight title in his four fights since lockdown, being the better underdog in three of them.

Elsewhere on the undercard, Jack Bateson extended his unbeaten record as he picked up a six round points win over Felix Garcia.

Bateson (14-0, 3 KOs) recovered from a flash knockdown in round two to claim the win in front of his loyal Leeds supporters, with referee Mark Lyson scoring it 58-56 in Bateson’s favour.

Conor Benn and Adrian Granados cleared the scales in Leeds, England, on Friday and are now ready to enter the ring to fight for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Continental welterweight title.

Both the champion Benn and Granados weighed in at 146.5 pounds, both under the 147 limit required by the division, and this Saturday they will feature in one of the most interesting fights of the Matchroom Boxing event, in which Katie Taylor will also be defending all her crowns against Jennifer Han.
Benn will be making the fifth defense of his belt against an experienced opponent and the fight is a great test for the 24-year-old British prospect.

Granados wants to prove that he still has the punch to go toe-to-toe with the best. He has faced some great opponents in his career and wants to upset a younger and highly regarded opponent like Benn.

The British fighter is undefeated in 18 fights, with 12 of them by knockout and the Mexican has 21 wins, 8 losses, 3 draws and 15 knockouts.

Hughes (23-5-2, 5 KOs) challenges Jovanni Straffon (24-3-1, 17 KOs) for his IBO lightweight title, while Bateson (13-0, 3 KOs) meets Felix Garcia (7-2-1, 3 KOs) on the Mauricio Lara vs. Josh Warrington 2 undercard in Leeds on Saturday, live on DAZN.

The weigh-in took place on Friday, with Hughes weighing in at 134.25lbs ahead of his title challenge, with defending champion Straffon was identical, also weighing 134.25lbs.

Maxi Hughes wants to keep his Cinderella story rolling as he challenges Jovanni Straffon for the IBO World Lightweight Title at Emerald Headingley Stadium in Leeds this Saturday September 4, shown live worldwide on DAZN.

Hughes (23-5-2, 5 KOs) has been in the form of his life through the pandemic, handing Jono Carroll defeat in August, travelling to Dubai two months later to take the WBC International Lightweight Title from Viktor Kotochigov and then realised a dream by landing the vacant British Title in March by stopping Paul Hyland Jr in Bolton to win the Lord Lonsdale belt at the third attempt.

The Doncaster man, who trains alongside main event star Josh Warrington under the guidance of Sean O’Hagan, now tackles a highly motivated Straffon for the IBO Title on the biggest stage of his career. The Mexican is familiar to UK fight fans after his stunning first round KO of James Tennyson to win the title in Manchester in May, but Hughes says he won’t allow his train to be delayed and wants victory tonight to stamp his ticket to a dream fight in America.

“I didn’t see this coming a year or 18 months ago,” said Hughes. “A year ago I was brought in as an opponent to keep Jono Carroll busy, now I am two titles up and fighting for a World Title, the Cinderella man. It cannot get better.

“You get older, wiser and mature as a person and that’s a part of the success too, and happiness of course. Things fall into place and if you want something bad enough, go and get it. I came close twice to walking away, losing to Sam Bowen was the first one and it was hard to swallow. I had a six-month break and got the hunger back, but when I lost to Liam Walsh I was gutted. It was a close fight but the right man won, and I just thought to myself ‘I am never going to be good enough to win these domestic fights’. The four-hour journey on the way home with Josh, Sean and Reece Mould, just talking about stuff, and then having a few days rest, I thought, ‘I will be good enough, I will get there, I will win something’.

“I’ve known Josh and Sean a long time, sparred with Josh for years and Sean has always been there as another voice and eyes in the corner. We we’re familiar with each other anyway but the link up came because I live in Wakefield and the gym is close by, with having a young daughter it made sense so that I don’t have so far to travel to the gym and I can spend more time at home with her. It makes me a better and happier fighter because the work and home life balance is great. We get on and have a laugh, and Sean has found a way to bring out the best in me, the results speak for themselves, it’s been three years now and we’re just getting better and better as a team, and we have everything we need to produce results.

“I know James Tennyson, I’ve sparred many rounds with him, and I don’t think he was 100 per cent in there. We’ve seen him better than that but that doesn’t take away from Straffon. What you see is what you get from him, even if that fight hadn’t happened and his name came up to fight me, we wouldn’t have approached it differently. Mexicans are known for being tough and his record shows he’s a puncher. So, we’ve done our homework, prepared well and we’ll take it round by round and adapt. I just hope I come out with some credit, he looks a million dollars with the win over James so if I turn him over, I don’t want people to say ‘oh maybe he wasn’t that good’ because no one else is in a rush to fight him.”

Maxi Hughes and Jack Bateson were both in good spirits as they spoke to the media at the final press conference ahead of this weekend’s huge event.

Hughes (23-5-2, 5 KOs) challenges Jovanni Straffon (24-3-1, 17 KOs) for his IBO lightweight title, while Bateson (13-0, 3 KOs) meets Felix Garcia (7-2-1, 3 KOs) at the event at Headingley Stadium in Leeds on Saturday, live on DAZN.

The final press conference took place on Thursday, and Hughes, Straffon, Bateson and Garcia all made their intentions perfectly clear ahead of fight night.

Hughes said: “I’m grateful for the opportunity. I’ve worked hard and been in the professional game 11 years, but believe I am just getting started. Whoever is the oldest world champion, I want to break that record.

“I’m the Cinderella man, and that was clear when my Mrs said to me that before I go out of this house that it needs cleaning! I’ve been cleaning the house, but when I go to the ball on Saturday I’ll have two glass slippers on.

“I have the experience, I’m older, and wiser. You can’t buy, beg, borrow or steal experience. When you’ve been doing it as long as I have, I’ve been around some top domestic opposition, and it’s led me to where I am.

“It’s a cliché saying everything happens for a reason, but every fight I’ve taken and not got the decision has led me to this. Now is the time to capitalise and reap the rewards and put my name up there in the top 10 across the sanctioning bodies.

“Josh Warrington has been a great world champion, and not only did he win the world title, he defended it in great fashion. I just look at what he’s doing in the gym and copy it.

“We get on well as well aside from boxing, and it’s brilliant to be bouncing off each other in the gym. We help each other and it’s been great to share camp with him.

“Straffon is a tough opponent, and even if we didn’t see the Tennyson fight and we got to fight him, you just have look at his record and see he’s heavy handed, so let’s not test it and stand and trade.”

Straffon said: “Thanks for the welcome, it’s great to be back here in England. This is not a fight between Mexico and the UK, it’s just between me and my opponent in the ring. I have the hunger in these fights, and I look at it as if this belt was vacant.

“Any fighter in front of me is a block in the road and I have to take it away. It’s like they’re a thief taking money from my family. I come to fight, and I hope he will as well.

“I’m not overlooking Maxi in this instance. It is dangerous when fighters do that. On Saturday you can be assured we will be shouting Viva Mexico!”

Bateson said: “I’m buzzing to be back here in Leeds with a crowd, and I’m looking to shine. This won’t be the last time I’m on one of these big cards and I’m looking forward to it.

“I’ve known Josh Warrington since we were young kids growing up. I want to be where he is now. He’s set the way and paved the path, and I’m sure that one day if I keep working hard, I can be where he is and doing it for the city.”

Garcia said: “Thanks to Matchroom for the opportunity to be here. I’ve prepared extremely hard and you’ll hopefully see the best of me on Saturday.”

Jack Bateson will make his highly-anticipated return to his hometown of Leeds when he competes on the huge Headingley Stadium event on September 4.

The Matchroom Boxing card will be broadcast live on DAZN and is headlined by Josh Warrington’s rematch with Mauricio Lara, and also features Maxi Hughes challenging Jovanni Straffon for the IBO lightweight title.

Bateson (13-0, 3 KOs) was last in action in April, extending his unbeaten record thanks to a points win over former Scottish champion Joe Ham.

He now returns to Leeds for the first time since September 2019, as he looks to put on a dazzling display in front of his loyal fanbase.

Bateson said: “The crowds are back and I’m buzzing to be back fighting at home in Leeds with my city behind me once again. This one is going to be special!”

Maxi Hughes will look to continue his incredible career resurgence when he challenges Jovanni Straffon for the IBO world lightweight title on September 4.

The fight is part of the Mauricio Lara vs. Josh Warrington rematch event at Headingley Stadium in Leeds, which is broadcast live on DAZN.

It has been a sensational 12 months for Hughes (23-5-2, 5 KOs), beginning when he defeated former world title challenger Jono Carroll last August, before following that up with a win over previously unbeaten Viktor Kotochigov in Dubai to claim the WBC International lightweight title.

Things got even better for the Yorkshire hero when he stopped Paul Hyland Jnr in March to win the vacant British lightweight title, and he will now attempt to take another huge step in his career by becoming IBO world champion.

He faces a tough test against Straffron (24-3-1, 17 KOs) with the dangerous Mexican stopping James Tennyson in the very first round to win the belt back in May.

Myron Mills is chasing a fight with British champion Lightweight Champion, Maxi Hughes, but first must come through the challenge of Lucas Ballingall at Sheffield Arena on May 21.

Mills – from Derby – will defend his English belt against Portsmouth’s Ballingall live on new boxing channel Fightzone TV in what will be a terrific contest.

On paper, it’s hard to split the pair. The champion has lost just once in 14 outings, and has six KO victories; while Lucas also has just a single loss on his 13 fight ledger, with three of his wins coming early. Ahead of the contest Ballingall says he has had Mills in his sights for years and promises: “He’s a good fighter, but I’m a better one. I want it more, I don’t care what he brings, I’ll bring more!”

Myron won the English crown in his last fight [November 2019] against local Birmingham rival, Kane Baker. A pro since 2014, Mills – a slick boxer who can fight too – is excited about headlining on Fightzone’s inaugural show. The 25-year-old is also very confident about retaining his title, and says he isn’t concerned by what he’s seen of his opponent.

“I don’t know too much about him,” said the fighter known as ‘Skillz’. “I was supposed to fight him a couple of years ago, but I don’t know what happened with that. I’ve seen a little bit of him on YouTube, not a lot, and he’s quite slick. On paper, looking at our records, I suppose you could say it’s a 50-50 fight but I don’t think he’s on my level, to be honest. From, what I’ve watched of him, I wasn’t overly impressed.

“It will be a good fight though. We’re two young kids, I’ve got my English, he wants to take it off me and neither of us will make it an easy night. And, it’s great news to me that I’ll be headlining on Fightzone. It’s a really good thing for boxing, and to be part of it at the start is fantastic.”

The undercard for the show features three unbeaten fighters – Sheffield’s Anthony Tomlinson 12-0 (3), Norwich light-heavyweight Iain Martell 9-0 (3), and super-lightweight Tommy Collins from Birmingham 2-0. And the night will be a memorable occasion for four new pros who will be making their ring debuts – Katie Healy (Birmingham), Nathan Cawood (Bradford), Rob Magill from York, and Elley Booth (Portsmouth).

Lee McGregor produced a sensational performance as he stopped Karim Guerfi in round one to win the European bantamweight title on Friday’s huge #MTKFightNight.

McGregor (10-0, 8 KOs) dropped Guerfi (29-5, 9 KOs) three times in round one, with the first two knockdowns coming from body shots, before a ferocious left hook ended the fight.

It means that in just his tenth professional fight, McGregor has become British, Commonwealth, and now European bantamweight champion.

Elsewhere on the card, Maxi Hughes (23-5-2, 5 KOs) achieved a lifelong dream as he defeated Paul Hyland Jnr (20-3, 7 KOs) to win the vacant British lightweight title.

Hughes keeps up his superb run of form during lockdown, having now beaten Jono Carroll, Viktor Kotochigov and Hyland Jnr in the space of seven months.

There were also wins for Shabaz Masoud (8-0, 2 KOs) against Louis Norman (14-9-1, 2 KOs), Sean Duffy (4-0, 2 KOs) against Paul Holt (7-10, 2 KOs), and Nathan Bendon (4-3-1, 1 KO) against Eryk Apresyan (7-1, 5 KOs), while Jamie Robinson (10-4-2, 3 KOs) and Billy Allington (8-1-3) were held to a draw.

European Bantamweight Title, 12 Rounds

LEE MCGREGOR def. KARIM GUERFI via TKO at 2:43 of round 1

Lee McGregor put in a performance for the ages as he dropped Karim Guerfi three times on his way to a first round knockout win to become European bantamweight champion.

The first knockdown came 50 seconds into the fight, as McGregor dropped Guerfi with a brilliant body shot. The Frenchman got back to his feet, but less than a minute later, another body shot sent him back to the canvas.

He got up again, but the onslaught from McGregor continued, and a fantastic left hook brought the fight to the end, with Guerfi knocked down again and McGregor crowned the new European bantamweight champion in just his 10th professional fight.

McGregor said: “I said from the start of the lead up to this fight that people will see a completely different Lee McGregor. Huge credit has to go to Ben Davison, because he’s made me a complete different fighter and that showed tonight.

“My physical strength, mental strength and lots else has been improved, and I’m a proper professional now. I sacrificed so much away from my family for this fight, but there was no denying me. I knew I wouldn’t return home without this belt.”

Vacant British Lightweight Title, 12 Rounds

Maxi Hughes continued his remarkable resurgence since the start of lockdown, as he stopped Paul Hyland Jnr to win the vacant British lightweight title.

It was a great battle, with both men giving as good as they got in the opening stages, but Hughes was starting to dominate as the fight progressed, with his body shots proving to be the difference.

One of those body shots crippled Hyland Jnr in round eight, and after it originally appeared that he would go down, he remained up and referee Mark Lyson ordered the fighters to box on.

Hyland Jnr continued to walk away with his back turned, with Hughes landing a legal shot that sent the Belfast man to the canvas. He was deemed unable to fight by the count of 10, with Hughes claiming a brilliant stoppage win.

Hughes said: “Some people might call it luck, but I call it years of hard work paying off. I took my opportunity when it came and now look at this.

“For anybody out there, keep being true to your dreams. I had a goal to win the British title, and now I want to keep on achieving. I knew I could get the wins on the big stage, and this means the world to me.”

Super-Lightweight, 8 Rounds

JAMIE ROBINSON and BILLY ALLINGTON drew 76-76 on points after 8 rounds

Jamie Robinson and Billy Allington couldn’t be separated after eight hard-fought rounds, with a brilliant fight between the two men ending in a draw.

Each boxer had portions of success during the fight, with Robinson appearing to get the better of the middle rounds, while Allington came on strong towards the back end of the fight.

It appeared at the final bell that the fight could have gone either way, and referee Howard Foster didn’t he couldn’t split the two men, scoring the bout even at 76-76.

Robinson said: “He had a good start in round one, but I felt I won rounds two to six, then I thought he won seven and eight. That makes it five rounds to three for me.

“We can get it on again. If we get the rematch I would be a completely different fighter. I felt like the 15 months out of the ring was a telling sign. I was falling in on my shots and my timing was off.”

Allington said: “If I’m being totally honest I think boxing is about hit and not get hit. If you look back at the footage I felt everything was hitting me on my gloves. I genuinely believe I won that fight.

“Every man is entitled to their opinion, but I was comfortable in there. I love what I do though and it was good to be back in the ring. This is just part of the journey.”

Super-Welterweight, 6 Rounds

NATHAN BENDON def. ERYK APRESYAN 57-56 on points after 6 rounds

There was a big upset on the card, as Nathan Bendon picked up a six rounds points victory over previously undefeated Eryk Apresyan.

Apresyan started well in the fight, but it all changed when Bendon rocked Apresyan in round three, with the Polish fighting showing incredible bravery to stay in the contest.

Bendon began to take over during the closing stages, and Apresyan also had a point deducted for holding in round six by the referee. That proved to be costly, as Mark Lyson scored the bout 57-56 in Bendon’s favour, earning him the upset victory.

Bendon said: “I took the fight on 4 days notice. I’m always ready to fight and fit in camp, and with a proper eight week camp I think I’ll have put him away.

“I’m always sparring a lot and I train six days a week. I’m a fitness freak. I thought he was gone in the third round but I was loading up a bit. Jon Pegg was telling me I had to pace myself, and then we took the win on points.”

Lightweight, 4 Rounds

SEAN DUFFY def. PAUL HOLT via TKO at 1:03 of round 3

Sean Duffy marked his first fight since October 2019 with a TKO victory, as he stopped former Midlands Area champion Paul Holt in round three.

It was a fast-paced battle, with both men giving all they got throughout the fight, but Duffy was landing the better of the punches and Holt looked to struggle as the fight went on.

The end looked to be approaching as the fight entered round three, and it didn’t take long for Duffy to make his impact, landing a big body shot that dropped Holt, who couldn’t make it back to his feet, securing the win for Duffy.

Duffy said: “I’ve had over a year out of the ring but have been training constantly with the likes of Anthony Cacace and Paul Hyland Jnr, so I was glad to be back in there. I was a bit rusty at the start as you can imagine, but I did exactly what I wanted to do.

“I got a cut from a headbutt, but that didn’t put me off the gameplan. I worked on the body shots a lot and we got him out of there. I love this sport and I enjoy being in the ring. I’m grateful to be able to step in and take part in events like this during the times we’re in.”

Super-Bantamweight, 6 Rounds

SHABAZ MASOUD def. LOUIS NORMAN via TKO at 1:12 of round 4

Rising star Shabaz Masoud returned to the ring in style as he picked up a dominant fourth round stoppage victory over former English champion Louis Norman.

Masoud was competing in his first fight since November 2019, but it was clear that he hasn’t missed a beat, as ‘The Maverick’ dominated the action from the first bell.

He knocked his opponent down at the end of round three, and while Norman may have been able to make it to the end of the round, two further knockdowns came at the start of round four, with the corner throwing in the towel as Masoud extended his unbeaten record to 8-0.

Masoud said: “I’m back and a lot better than I’ve ever been before. I’ve had 16 months out of the ring and I’ve been with Ben Davison for a full year, and I need to thank him and MTK Global for helping me improve.

“As soon as I started picking up the pace I got him out of there. Everyone thinks I’ve got pillow fists, but when you face me and get smacked then you’ll know about it. Credit to Louis Norman for taking the fight. I don’t avoid anybody, and I want a British title by the end of the year.”

Paul Hyland Jnr has vowed that he will be taking the British lightweight title with him back to Belfast when he faces Maxi Hughes on tonight’s massive #MTKFightNight.

Hyland Jnr (20-2, 7 KOs) and Hughes (22-5-2, 4 KOs) collide for the vacant belt at the University of Bolton Stadium this evening, live on IFL TV.

Originally Hyland Jnr was due to face Liam Walsh for the title before Hughes stepped in, but he insists the change of opponent won’t be a problem.

Hyland Jnr said: “I know Maxi is a talented boxer and very experienced, but I’m really looking forward to this fight. I respect him as an opponent as I do with everyone, but I’m totally ready and will be taking the British title home with me.

“It’s not been frustrating having to deal with the opponent change, it was just about adapting to a different style and I’m just excited to get in there and get down to business.

“This camp has been really good. It’s the best I’ve been feeling both physically and mentally coming into any fight in my career, so that is all positive.

“I won’t be underestimating Maxi. I know he’s always training and has been more over active the last year, so I’m expecting a great 12-rounder.”

Maxi Hughes has revealed how the last six months has made him realise his full potential in the boxing ring ahead of his vacant British lightweight title showdown with Paul Hyland Jnr on Friday’s #MTKFightNight.

Hughes (22-5-2, 4 KOs) and Hyland Jnr (20-2, 7 KOs) collide at the University of Bolton Stadium this week, live on IFL TV.

Since August 2020, Hughes has picked up incredible wins over Jono Carroll and Viktor Kotochigov, and he’s relishing his new lease of life ahead of his plans to secure the British title.

Hughes said: “I’m very excited to be fighting for the Lonsdale belt. It’s such a beautiful & prestigious title and I’m looking forward to adding it to my collection.

“When I got the phone call from Lee Eaton about stepping in for this fight I accepted immediately, there was absolutely no hesitation. It’s been very refreshing over the last 6 months, almost like an “I told you so” moment I’ve had with myself.

“I’ve always known what I’m capable of and it was just a matter of delivering it and getting the result. It will be the same on Friday when I win the British title.

“I feel I know enough about Hyland Jnr. I’m expecting the very best version of him come fight night. I anticipate he’ll bring the fight to me but I believe I’ll have an answer for everything.”

Big Fights Added to March 19th MTK Fight Night | Boxen247.com

The upcoming #MTKFightNight event on March 19 has added even more firepower – after a number of mouth-watering bouts were added to the card.

The event takes place at the University of Bolton Stadium, and will be broadcast in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank and worldwide on IFL TV.

There are already two must-see title fights on the bill, as Karim Guerfi defends his European bantamweight title against Lee McGregor, and Maxi Hughes and Paul Hyland Jnr collide for the vacant British lightweight title.

More fights have now been added, including a brilliant super-middleweight contest between two unbeaten men, as Belfast’s hard-hitting Padraig McCrory (11-0, 5 KOs) meets former Southern Area champion Germaine Brown (9-0, 3 KOs), who in his last outing defeated Dmitrii Chudinov.

Jamie Robinson (10-4-1, 3 KOs) makes his long-awaited return, taking on former Southern Area title challenger Billy Allington (8-1-2), plus undefeated Shabaz Masoud (7-0, 1 KO) faces former English champion Louis Norman (14-8-1, 2 KOs). Irishman Paul Ryan makes his professional debut on the card, going up against Kyle Hughes (2-2), while rising star William Hamilton (2-0, 1 KO) is back in action too.

MTK Global Promoter Lee Eaton said: “This was already a spectacular bill due to the two title fights, and the undercard is now shaping up extremely well.

“The fight between Padraig McCrory and Germaine Brown could steal the show, and we also have fantastic contests involving Jamie Robinson, Shabaz Masoud and Paul Ryan.

“It’s the second of two huge events we have that week, and both cards are full of brilliant fights from top to bottom.”
