Gavin McDonnell vs. Andoni Gago

The European featherweight title showdown between Gavin McDonnell and Andoni Gago ended in a technical draw on Friday after an accidental head clash brought an end to proceedings.

McDonnell (22-2-3, 6 KOs) was challenging Gago (24-3-4, 7 KOs) for his European title on a Matchroom Boxing event that took place in Barcelona, and was broadcast live on DAZN.

It was a tough start for McDonnell, as he suffered a nasty cut in the first round of the bout, with the Doncaster showing incredible heart and bravery to fight through the adversity.

The doctor had a look at the cut in the fourth round and deemed it could continue, but then after checking it again at the start of the fifth round, it was ruled that the fight had to be called off.

As it was judged to be from an accidental clash of heads, the fight went to the scorecards, with the judges scoring it 50-46, 48-48, and 48-48, meaning it ended in a technical draw.

Gavin McDonnell vs. Andoni Gago

Gavin McDonnell looked ripped and ready on the scales as he weighed in for his European featherweight title showdown with Andoni Gago on Friday.

McDonnell (22-2-2, 6 KOs) challenges Gago (24-3-3, 7 KOs) for his belt on a Matchroom Boxing event in Barcelona tomorrow night, live on DAZN.

The two men weighed in on Friday, with McDonnell looking in superb shape as he bids to become a two-weight European champion. He tipped the scales at 56.65kg (124.89lbs), while Gago was slightly heavier at 56.85kg (125.33lbs).

Former British and European super-bantamweight champion McDonnell is a also two-time super-bantamweight world title challenger, and is looking to add another belt to his collection after stepping up to featherweight.

Bilbao’s Gago won the belt in his home city back in June 2019, but now faces a tough test against the Doncaster fighter.

Gavin McDonnell feels he has operated at a much higher level than Andoni Gago ahead of their European featherweight title showdown on Friday.

McDonnell (22-2-2, 6 KOs) challenges Gago (24-3-3, 7 KOs) for his belt on a Matchroom Boxing event in Barcelona this week, live on DAZN.

The two men went head to head at their final press conference on Wednesday, and McDonnell feels his previous tenure as British and European super-bantamweight champion, along with challenging for the WBC and WBA world titles, gives him the edge.

McDonnell said: “I’m more than ready for Gago come fight night. He’s European champion and I’ve got to respect that, but the level I’ve been at is a lot higher than the level he’s fought at.

“I’ve mixed with the better fights, and it will show on fight night. I believe I will stop him, and we will see how good I am compared to him.

“I know how well I’ve prepared and I’ve got some good sparring, so I’m in the very best shape. There might not be a crowd on Friday, but we’re fighting men, and it will just be me and him in the ring so that’s all that matters.”

Gavin McDonnell has vowed to return to where he belongs in boxing as he prepares to face Antoni Gago for the European featherweight title on Friday.

McDonnell (22-2-2, 6 KOs) challenges Gago (24-3-3, 7 KOs) for his belt on a Matchroom Boxing event in Barcelona this week, live on DAZN.

A victory would see McDonnell become a two-weight European champion, and the former world title challenger is confident he can take his chance.

McDonnell told Matchroom Boxing: “This has been two years in the making. We always knew we had this fight, now we have the date and I’m looking forward to it.

“I’ve always been in training and it’s just a case of soon being back under the lights. I’ve been there, done it and seen it all, and when I get back in the ring it will come second nature to me and I’ll get my second European title.

“I was having the big fights and was around it all, and when it’s taken away from you then you do miss it. I’m glad to now be back and this is a big title that will propel me back to where I belong.

“I’ve been really enjoying my boxing this time around. At first you maybe take it in your stride and a bit for granted, but now I’ve got this opportunity, so I’ll take it and I’ll soon be back to where I want to be.”

Gavin McDonnell will have the chance to become a two-weight European champion when he challenges Andoni Gago for his European featherweight title next month.

The event will be promoted by Matchroom Boxing and takes place at the Pabellón de la Vall d`Hebron in Barcelona on Friday March 26, and will be broadcast live on DAZN.

McDonnell (22-2-2, 6 KOs) is a two-time super-bantamweight world title challenger, and is looking to add another belt to his collection after stepping up to featherweight.

Bilbao’s Gago (24-3-3, 7 KOs) won the belt in his home city back in June 2019, but now faces a tough test against the Doncaster fighter.

Matchroom Sport Managing Director Eddie Hearn said: “This is a huge card for Spanish boxing and we can’t wait to return on March 26. This card features some of the country’s strongest talents with two hungry Brits looking to come and rip the titles from them. Don’t miss all the action live on DAZN.”
