Mercado vs. Guzmán

WBC super bantamweight world champion, Yamileth Mercado was a special guest on “Coffee Tuesday” to discuss her  successful defence last Saturday against rugged Alejandra Guzmán from Hermosillo, Sonora, in what became a rousing candidate for Fight Of The Year.

Yamileth, who made the first defence of her title, was extremely emotional and without being able to hold back her tears, she talked about how she persevered, as from the fifth round she suffered an injury to an eardrum that made her feel very bad, affected her balance and put her victory at risk.

“It was a very complicated fight, I felt very bad during the last five rounds, when I lost my timing as I had vertigo and I did not know what was happening. At the end of the fifth round I was hitting Alejandra hard and I didn’t really feel any blow. I only heard a kind of chime, when I returned to my corner and I was very stunned. I commented about this to my corner, but we didn’t know what was happening. However, Alfredo encouraged, inspired and he guided me, making me feel assured.

“The last rounds were very difficult, I heard many voices, and it was difficult for me to listen Alfredo’s instructions.  I could not gauge the distance well. In the eighth we got a rumour that I was losing by one point. I couldn’t believe it, so I went out with everything, as I wasn’t going to lose my title. In the ninth round, I pushed myself too hard, and that cost me because I was agitated and the vertigo came back with great force, but I remembered the work on the ropes and that was where I felt safe.  I had to force Alejandra to the corner, and that’s what I did . I am sure that I got the victory thanks to the training I did. It was a very hard job, but having sparred with men, was the key to victory.”

Yamileth, who once again demonstrated that she is a warrior and that her fortitude comes from the heart. She stressed that it never crossed her mind to throw in the towel, on the contrary, she knew that despite how she felt she had to go ahead and would retain her crown.

She also commented that at the end, she hugged Alejandra, encouraging her not to give up, and that she is on the right track, as that is exactly what Fatuma Zarika sportingly did when she fought against her for the first time. Yamileth was expecting a difficult fight, and thanked Alejandra in a very special way, because she also fought a great battle even though she injured her arm. 

The champ clarified that for the moment her injury will be dealt with via a specific treatment under the strict supervision of the doctor. However, it is not possible to rule out the possibility of surgery.

World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Yamileth “Yeimi” Mercado (17-2, 5KO`s) skilfully steered her way through some choppy waters, using her versatility and international experience,  in spite of her young age, to win a UD against lanky hard hitting Alejandra “Rocquera” Guzman (11-2-2, 5KO`s), as top of the bill in a Zanfer and 2M Promotions extravaganza at Jardines Del Pedregal Hermosillo, Sorona.

In round one,  they swopped hard punches. Yeimi (22) was landing long rights and moving away, but taller Alejandra (24), moved in and caught her flush in the face with a stinging right and then followed up with the same punch. Realizing the magnitude of the unfolding and unyielding challenge, Yeimi started round two with a peach of a left right combination, but had to soak up two hard rights to the head and then two more which snapped back her head.

More intense exchanges in the third and fourth but a change of tactics in the fifth by Yeimi, who`s Coach Alfredo Caballero, was energetically shadow boxing in her corner,  to demonstrate what she should be doing. While Julio Cesar Chavez`s older brother Rodolfo in the other corner, was being more taciturn and less demonstrative.

Yeimi moved up a gear and trapped Alejandra on the ropes, getting the better of short range exchanges, and more of the same crowding plus slugging in round six. Yet in round seven Alejandra launched a blistering sustained attack, only to be forced back on to the ropes yet again.  By the eighth Alejandra`s pace had noticeably slowed. She was plodding and throwing less punches. Yeimi was using her footwork better and landing well to body and head in the ninth. She had moved into a clear lead, going confidently into the tenth and final round.

Knowing she was behind on points, throwing caution to the wind plus the kitchen sink,  Alejandra launched a ferocious onslaught in that tenth and final round, at long last letting her hands go. Lefts and rights slammed into Yeimi`s head, she was briefly staggered and her nose, which had been broken in her last fight against Irasema Rayas, who she had stopped in round four, started bleeding all over again.  Yet she weathered the late storm, kept calm and finished the fight a deserved winner.  Scores were: 98-92 twice and 98-93.

 This was indeed an entertaining quality, competitive fight. A walk in the park first title defense…it  wasn`t!

World Boxing Council super bantamweight Champion Yamileth “Yeimi” Mercado is ready for the first defense of her title this coming February 6th, in Hermosillo against Julissa Alejandra “La Roquera” Guzman.

One of the questions which needs to be answered, is just how Yeimi`s “Schnozzola” will fare? In her last fight, which was a non title bout, her nose was fractured in two places in the second round, during an accidental clash of heads with Irasema Rayas. Fighting on through intense pain and a copious blood flow, the champion upped gears and TKO`d her opponent in one minute and thirty six seconds of the fourth round. That was back in September, so there`s been time to heal.

Aged just twenty two, and from Hermosillo, Sonora, Yeimi (16-2, 5 KO`s) has already notched up a fair portion and degree of experience. Her pro debut was in 2014, and less than two years later, she fought Jessica Munoz for the vacant WBC Fecombox super bantamweight crown, losing by UD. During the next year two wins and three more in 2018. In her fourth bout during that year, Yeimi audaciously went all the way to the Kenyatta International Convention Center in Nairobi, Kenya to take on WBC Champion Fatuma Zarika. She lost by a split decision, but quickly bounced back to win the vacant International Title, defeating Alys Sanchez by UD, notching another UD victory in her first defense against Karina Fernandez.

then in 2019, she fought her heart out to defeat Zarika by UD in Cuidad Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua.

Great preparation for this upcoming championship defense. Yeimi has shared a training camp with Miguel Berchelt and Juan Francisco Estrada in Los Mochis. The trio have been put through their paces by seasoned coach Alfredo Caballero. Yeimi has sparred with both of the other two world champions.

Tall, tough and resolute, Julissa Alejandra Guzman, nicknamed: “La Roquera” aims to lead Yeimi on a merry dance. Aged 24, from Cuidad Obregon, Sonora with a record of 11-1-2, with 5 KO`s. That loss was her pro debut in 2015, against Yolanda Vega. Since then there`s been improvement. Her only fight outside Mexico was a UD victory in Quito against Erika Cedeno. Alejandra is unbeaten in her last thirteen contests, over a five year span, having a seven fight winning streak. This championship bout, has all the makings of an excellent contest, between two tough Northerners.

WBC super bantamweight champion Yamileth “Yeimi” Mercado, will make the first defense of her title, against Alejandra “Rocquera” Guzmán, topping the bill this Saturday, in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.

“Yeimi” Mercado (16-2-0, 5 ko’s) won the world championship in November 2019, defeating Kenyan Fatuma Zarika by unanimous decision in her home city of Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua. She comes to this, from knocking out Irasema Rayas in four rounds, in a non-title fight, last September in Tijuana.

Her challenger  “Roquera” Guzmán (11-1-2, 5 kos), started her career in July 2015 losing on points to Yolanda Vega, but since then, she has progressed  in 13 fights without losing. . In August 2019, she defeated the experienced Marisol Corona by unanimous decision in the result that advanced her in the world rankings. In her most recent fight, in November 2019, she knocked out María de los Ángeles Núñez in 3 rounds.

The fight, which is promoted by Zanfer and 2M Promotions, will be broadcasted on Azteca 7.

Reigning WBC super bantamweight champion Yamileth Mercado reports ready to defend her crown in a fight that promises to be a war against Alejandra Guzmán.

Mercado, who has shared camp with world champions Miguel Berchelt and Juan Francisco Estrada in Los Mochis, revealed  that she has waited a long time for this moment, because due to various situations during the pandemic and her injury, this defense has been postponed.  However she is ready to show why she is the best in the division and what better way to do it by fighting Alejandra Guzmán. Yamileth assured that she has done a great preparation.

Alejandra, who first thanked the opportunity to contest the title, says she doesn’t feel like the underdog and is convinced she`ll be taking the title home.

Guillermo Brito from Zanfer promotions says the clash will be on February 6 in Hermosillo, Sonora. He assures it`ll be a fight to remember.
