Fight Notes: Scores were 96-94, 96-95 x2, all for a close Mills unanimous points decision. In a 50/50 fight that did not disappoint, the two went at it from start to finish in a VERY close fight. A draw would not have been a surprise. With both showing full respect to each other in the post fight interview, Ballingall nailed it stating as the challenger he had to take the title. It was so close with a good decision from the judges.

Shame about the British weather.

Fight Notes: Dube was down in round 1 and 2 from body shots, the second time for the count. Time of the stoppage was 0:22 of the 2nd round for a Martell stoppage victory. This was the southern area cruiserweight champion Martell’s first bout at light heavyweight.

Myron Mills vs. Lucas Ballingall

Myron Mills is chasing a fight with British champion Lightweight Champion, Maxi Hughes, but first must come through the challenge of Lucas Ballingall at Sheffield Arena on May 21.

Mills – from Derby – will defend his English belt against Portsmouth’s Ballingall live on new boxing channel Fightzone TV in what will be a terrific contest.

On paper, it’s hard to split the pair. The champion has lost just once in 14 outings, and has six KO victories; while Lucas also has just a single loss on his 13 fight ledger, with three of his wins coming early. Ahead of the contest Ballingall says he has had Mills in his sights for years and promises: “He’s a good fighter, but I’m a better one. I want it more, I don’t care what he brings, I’ll bring more!”

Myron won the English crown in his last fight [November 2019] against local Birmingham rival, Kane Baker. A pro since 2014, Mills – a slick boxer who can fight too – is excited about headlining on Fightzone’s inaugural show. The 25-year-old is also very confident about retaining his title, and says he isn’t concerned by what he’s seen of his opponent.

“I don’t know too much about him,” said the fighter known as ‘Skillz’. “I was supposed to fight him a couple of years ago, but I don’t know what happened with that. I’ve seen a little bit of him on YouTube, not a lot, and he’s quite slick. On paper, looking at our records, I suppose you could say it’s a 50-50 fight but I don’t think he’s on my level, to be honest. From, what I’ve watched of him, I wasn’t overly impressed.

“It will be a good fight though. We’re two young kids, I’ve got my English, he wants to take it off me and neither of us will make it an easy night. And, it’s great news to me that I’ll be headlining on Fightzone. It’s a really good thing for boxing, and to be part of it at the start is fantastic.”

The undercard for the show features three unbeaten fighters – Sheffield’s Anthony Tomlinson 12-0 (3), Norwich light-heavyweight Iain Martell 9-0 (3), and super-lightweight Tommy Collins from Birmingham 2-0. And the night will be a memorable occasion for four new pros who will be making their ring debuts – Katie Healy (Birmingham), Nathan Cawood (Bradford), Rob Magill from York, and Elley Booth (Portsmouth).

Fight Academy’s May 21 show at Sheffield Arena will now be topped by English Lightweight champion Myron Mills, 14-1 (6), from Derby defending against Portsmouth challenger, Lucas Ballingall (pictured), 13-1 (3), with the original bill-topper now being lined up for later this year.

Unbeaten local big-hitter Anthony Tomlinson, 12-0 (7), was due to showcase the card against Wigan’s James Moorcroft, 13-1 (5), but – with that match scuppered – ‘The Truth’ Tomlinson will now appear in an eight-rounder on the night instead.  All the action will be broadcast live and exclusive by new boxing channel Fightzone.

“It’s Anthony’s first fight with us and we said it would be for a title,” explained promoter Dennis Hobson.  “We’ve been lobbying a couple of  sanctioning bodies for some time but because James is coming off a loss they wouldn’t pass him.  The bodies have dragged their feet a bit and we’ve just found out that it won’t be a title fight.  So, the plan is to get James in a fight – and hopefully a win – on one of our later shows, and then match the pair of them in August.  The fight is worthy of a title and I don’t want to do it without one.

“To be honest, every cloud has a silver lining and Mills against Ballingall is a brilliant fight anyway.  We’ve made sure with all our cards that if there is a dropout then we have another fight on that’s worthy of topping the bill, and this does just that.  With Anthony being an undefeated, exciting Sheffield fighter we opted for him to top the card originally but this English Title fight could very easily have been it. It’s a smashing fight, a really even match, and the card is still a really good one to kick off our upcoming run of shows.”
